the dramatic confrontation in a driveway ended with police shooting a man who didn't live there. good evening, i'm jim vance. >> i'm doreen gentzler. the strange run-in happened in darnestown, maryland, minutes after police saw a strange car pull on his property. jackie bensen is on indian run drive with details. hi, jackie. >> reporter: good evening. news 4 learned the man that was shot has an extensive criminal history and charges for burglary, drugs and car theft. the man is hospitalized in critical condition at this hour. few details are known about why this car, a dark-colored

cadillac catera ended up stuck in a driveway on this lot in darnestown. the driver was shot by a montgomery county police officer after the homeowner called 911 twice about 3:30 p.m. >> witness statements tell us that the subject charged, attacked the officer. the officer fired more than one shot, striking the subject. officers responding to the scene, did perform life-saving efforts. >> reporter: police say no weapon was recovered. they say an initial check revealed the vehle had not been reported stolen. >> i was sitting on the couch with my wife and i heard, bam, bam, bam, bam, bam, and i said that's a gunshot. >> reporter: neighbor jay wheeler confirms police statistics that there is next-to-no crime in this quiet neighborhood and deadend streets. >> there virtually no crime at all.

maybe something gets something stolen out of their garage once in a while. but for something like this -- >> reporter: investigators spent hours documenting the scene of the shooting and then towed away the car involved. the officer involved has been placed on paid routine administrative leave, while the investigation is conducted. doreen, back to you. >> jackie bensen in darnestown, thank you, jackie. family and friends are mourning a local marine who was killed in afghanistan while serving his second tour of duty there. lance corporal jordan crobot of frederick, maryland, was killed during combat this past weekend. he had already been deployed to iraq. relatives say the 24-year-old always wanted to service his country. >> we're re-enacting and he just seemed to be -- have,ou know, a heart for that and he always wanted to be a marine. >> he leaves behind a wife and three younger siblings. the department of defense has not released detailed of his

death. in another show of defiance, iran test-fired mid range missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. the missiles fired today could carry warheads about 1,200 miles. that's far enough to hit u.s. bases in iraq and afghanistan as well as israel and parts of europe. over the weend, iran tested shorter-range rockets. the united states is now threatening sanctions if iran doesn't show a willingness to shut down its nuclear program. some experts believe a nuclear iran will soon be a reality. >> they're taking multiple paths, they're being deceptive. they intend to end up and will end up with 30 nuclear weapons inside of a decade. >> international talks with iran over its nuclear program are set for thursday in geneva. the united states will take part. the second wave of swine flu apparently is hitting the country pretty hard. according to the centers for disease control, we are now in the middle of a swine flu pandemic. cdc officials say cases have

been on the rise for the past six weeks. today 26 states are reporting widespread flu cases. nearly all of those are confirmed to be the h1n1 strain. a new vaccine is set to be available some time over the next two weeks. hospital are now taking aggressive steps to keep the swine flu out. the system in northern virginia will soon prohibit any visitors under the age of 18. karsay spencer is in fairfax now with their plans. darcy? >> reporter: jim, chances are if you have a friend or loved one staying at one of the affected hospitals, you could be asked to stay away, to stay home. this only affects in-patient care. the new rules start october 1st. the hospital system that will yous five hospitals took a major step in preventing the spread of swine flu. the system is limiting visiting hours and banning children from visiting impatient units starting on thursday. >> we always report first do no

harm is to protect the people who come inside our boundaries first for care, for visitation, and for work environment. >> reporter: the restrictions affect alexandra, fair oakes, mt. vernon. >> if we allow a sick person to visit one of your family members and they became sick with h1n1, how would you feel? our first mission is safety. >> reporter: visiting hours will be restricted to two two-hour blocks. the number of visitors will be limited to two adults at a time. anyone showing flu-like symptoms will not be allowed. >> i think that's a great idea. you're sitting in an emergency room waiting and somebody might have h1n1 and they could spread it to everybody. i think it's definitely a good idea they're being proactive. >> reporter: there will also be special limitations for critical care, oncology and maternity units. dr. gloria is the director of health in fairfax county. she said it's a good policy. >> the way to go is what the hospital tried to do is social

distancing or limiting the amount of contact that these sick individuals have with people in the community who might have influenza or be becoming down with influenza. >> reporter: the new rules are expected to last throughout the flu season. if the hospital determines that these rules are unnecessary, they could be suspended at any time. reporting live from fairfax, darcy spence news 4. back to u. >> thanks, darcy. the man accused of killing a security guard over the u.s. holocaust museum over the counter is now in a federal prison in north carolina. james von brunn was recently moved to a detention facility in but ner, north carolina, where doctors will determine whether he's fit to stand trial. von brunn had been hospitalized in washington after being shot in the face by other museum guards. he's been indicted on several charges, including first degree murder. he could face the death penalty if he's convicted. a big poster outside of a strip club in richmond, virginia, has sparked a protest for its betrayal of president obama. the poster predicts the

president -- depicts the president with a face painted like that of the cartoon character the joker. the image has been used across the country by some who refer to the president as a socialist. today activists with the virginia naacp conference gathered outside to condemn the poster. they called it disrespectful to president obama and to all people of african heritage. some of the employees of the club speaking on the owner's behalf said the banner is simply to express opposition to the president's policies. they say it's got nothing to do with race. still ahead tonight -- the first family causes double-takes among some tourists. we'll tell you why. the question is could a disgraced congressman be gearing up for another run at the capital? big concerns at a shopping center already blown out by one gas leak. look at the support system on the ground needed for air ambulances. bob, what's ahead in weather? >> we've got a clear night. did you see that bright object near the moon? i will tell what you it was, as well as tomorrow morning's temperatures. stay with us.

the search continues for three masked men who burst into a house and killed the father of four. it happened on marleigh drive in buoy early yesterday morning. 39-year-old tyrone richardson was killed while his family was held at gunpoint. a family friend tells news 4 that the victim and his wife were very family oriented. investigators think the victim was specifically targeted. >> it appears to be in the preliminary stages of our investigation yet another homicide where the victim led a lifestyle that led to his demise. >> very close-knit family and they do a lot of team activities, sports. they supportheir children. and it is actually a tragic crime. >> the victim's mercedeses with stolen after the shooting. the car was found this morning in the district. fire investigators are still trying to find the source of a gas leak that shut down a mall in forestville, maryland.

that leak was discovered yesterday. stores in the penmar shopping ceer reopened today but owners and workers are still nervous. back in may a leak at the same mall caused a massive explosion that injured nine firefighters. investigators say the most recently cou leak could have ha same results. the people who work on the pipeline want the lines replaced. they are saying he might make a comeback and spoke in his home state of new york. it was one of his first appearances for serving drunk driving time in alexandria. that led to revelations he fathered a child in an extramarital affair. he resigned from office last year. fiscella has not commented on his future. tonight we go on board with an air ambulance team as discussions continue about the risk of the flight.

patients, congestive heart failure. >> a lot of our decisions are judgment calls. >> but before any decisions are made, the crew from med star one waits here at maryland's tipton airport to make sure supplies are stocked and in order and the helicopter in good working condition. pilot paul gillis greets the team on today's weather conditions. >> the weather today is actually better than what was forecast yesterday. >> then they wait for the first call of the day. they're dispatchfoed from here, the system's nerve center, where physicians call in to arrange transportation for their sickest patients usually from smaller outlying hospitals to larger, central facilities like washington hospital center. >> it can be tense, you know, when things are going bad, you need to be one step ahead of what's going to happen. >> joan is a flight nurse. she says moving patients from one hospital to another is actually more intense than most

scene flights, when the helicopter is sent to a crash or bad accident, to rush injured patients to the hospital. >> there's more aspects to it, more drugs and medications, sometimes they're indue batubat you're trying to work out their blood pressure issues, the whole dynamics. >> most of med star flights are interfacility missions. just 4% are scene flights. last year they transported 2,500 patients by air in more than seven states plus the district. >> it's really a mix. it's -- every day is a new situation, a new adventure. you come in, you don't know what's in store. >> for flight paramedic scott williamson, the hardest part of the job is waiting for a call and making the decision whether to fly. but with the recent crash, flig safety is coming under greater scrutiny, as med star's pilot gillis decides if it's safe to fly. >> everything from weather to

aircraft conditions. sometimes the lines aren't cut and dry. >> reporter: a recent hearg by the national transportation safety board looked at 55 crashes that left 54 people dead, and found that those incidents could have been prevented with simple corrective action. but all of that negative shaken team's confidence. >> they affect you. they affect me and my family. i'm not afraid to fly. i've never been afraid to fly. >> if it's not safe to do it, then we won't do it. >> med star has not been involved in any of the recent crashes. officials mntain the med star program is one of the safest in the nation. "the tonight show" host conan o'brien is back at work tonight after a trip to a hospital and a weekend at home. o'brien was hit on the head on friday while filming a stunt with actress teri hatcher. production on the show was halted and nbc ran a repeat of "the tonight show" instead of the program that was scheduled to air. today o'brien poked some fun at the incident.

>> i'm going to bring the guy in. i think he's still peeping out there. the temperature outside, it is a nice night. the temperatures have begun to fall and not as low as they will be in the coming days. outside right now, our current temperature is down into the 50s after being 80 degrees. the high temperature today 80 degrees. last year our high temperature reached 80 degrees on october 15th. 80 here. look at the 60s to our north. and that was where the highs were. right now 55 degrees, 50s already for the folks out in the mountains of west virginia. our temperature is about the same as it was 24 hours ago. but look at the mid part of the country. the really chilly stuff beginning to come our way. here's the overall pattern where we have the jet stream diving to the south, bringing in more cool air with northwesterly winds. right now on doppler, there's nothing in and around us but there is still some lingering

showers up around easte parts of new england. you can see thos moving through boston right now. that's the cool front that has been coming through. earlier today and yesterday it would have been really warm. down to the south and southeast, vero beach with 93, leesburg down to 66. earlier, the wind gusted to almost 30 miles per hour. talk about chilly stuff, this is an extreme northwester parts of michigan, wakefield, michigan, down to 40 degrees right now. so overnight tonight -- here's what's going to be going on. first of all, with the chilly air, colors beginning to come on for you leaf lookers early october. the next couple weeks far north parts of new england. up around the northeast kingdom and maybe some of the high spots of west virginia. but skyline drive, spots like that, will really be the tale end of october. in and around our own neck of the woods. first part of november. overnight tonight, those northwesterly winds continue. there will be on-and-off clouds as we go through tomorrow. out in the mountains of west

this home video shows the san francisco zoo where a man jumped into a bear exhibit over the weekend. you can see him hopping the fence. the zoo staff worked to distract a nearby bear so it wouldn't move closer to the man. the guy who jumped the fen was able to get back out of the exhibit safely. he's being evaluated at a ychiatric hospital now. president obama is making a personal appearance at the international olympic committee to bring t olympic games to chicago for the 2016 games. ly get this. they are car yiling hundreds of athletes, leaders and supporters of the finalists include madrid, rio de janeiro and tokyo. a final decision will be made on friday. president obama became a personal tour guide last night. he took his sister's family around the nation's capital. the first family and the relatives made stops at the jeffson memorial on the
