candles light the way for a community trying to heal after a neighbor was brutally murdered while the life of his family was spared. good evening. have. >> more on that vigil in a moment. first breaking news. we're starting to see the impact of an earthquake and tsunami that hit the samoas. at least 34 people are dead. the quake with a magnitude between 8.0 and 8.3 struck around dawn 20 miles below the ocean floor. it triggered a tsunami with waves 15 to 20-feet high. it swept ashore flattening villages. american samoa's delegate spoke out late this evening. >> i'm sure that in due time, our governor's going to request an official declaration by president obama to declare this a disaster area. >> the federal emergency

management agency and the coast guard are already on their way to assist the people there. meanwhile, several pacific islands issued tsunami warnings. hawaii is under a tsunami watch. now to our other top story, a vigil w held tonight where a man was shot to death in a home invasion earlier this week. police released new details about the crime. jackie is here with more. >> reporter: police said think do not believe this murder is connected to a recent series of home break-ins here. >> you know, this family, you know, let us pray for them. >> reporter: residents of the marley community walked with candles past manicured lawns and well-kept homes. the quiet development off enterprise road in the buoy area is home to many professionals and two career couples. the murder sunday of tyrone richardson shot to death in his marley drive home while his wife and children were tied up shocked and disturbed people here. many believed it was connected

to a series of burglaries. police say that is not the case. >> this crime was not a burglary gone bad. the decedent in this case, mr. richardson, was targeted for an unknown reason. >> we walked from the house all the way up to 193. >> reporter: at a community meeting attended by more than 100 residents, investigators revealed new information about the richardson murder. they said the suspects apparently knew the victim to some degree. they said mr. richardson's mercedes did he san, stolen by the three sus detectives, has been recovered in the district and they confirmed detectives have found three or four items the suspects discarded as they drove away but would not say what those items are. relieved by the information the murder was not believed to be random, residents talked about ways to use new-found community closeness to prevent crime. >> what our neighbors did, we made a pact we're going to exchange cell phones so if you're home throughout the day,

i can give you a call and say, hey, an alarm is going off or someone is walking on your home so we made a pact to get to know each other. >> reporter: one of the suspects was armed with an assault-type rifle. another had a handgun. >> jackie, ben sen reporting from buoy tonight. news out of fairfax county tonight where the police are on the scene after stabbing in ringfield month mall. the man was stabbed after what may have been a robbery. the victim was breathing was taken to a hospital. police are looking for two suspects. . a school bus driver and an aide a recovering after their school bus was in flames in northeast d.c. witness susie bradford captured this video of the fire on her cell phone. it happened near 20th and ebart street. police say the bus was on its way back to the company when the

fire broke out. two women on the bus, the driver and the aide, were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation problems. no children were on the bus when the fire happened. michael vick stepped off the football field and into a southwest washington church this afternoon. vick, his fiancee and children visited the covenant baptist church where he spoke out against dogfighting. he warned kids not to get involved. vick called dogfighting pointless. he served a year and a half behind bars after being convicted for his role in running a dogfighting ring. now he's working with the humane society. >> trying to get more people involved in becoming animal rights advocates and helping eradicate dogfighting. so, i'm honored to be here. our goal is to reach every demographic, you know, to reach people all acrosshe world to help contribute and eradicate dogfighting. >> the former atlanta falcon quarteack is now with the philadelphia eagles. he played for the first time

sunday. the first time since his release from prison. on capitol hill today a defeat for the so-called public option. liberal democrats failed to get a government-run insurance option included in the sweeping health care legislation bill. thvote was 15-8 against a government -- against a government-run health insurance option. senate finance chair max baucus hopes to push his more mide of the road measure through the committee by the end of the week. d the man who documented some of the country's most controversial issues including health care premiered his latest film in northwest d.c. today. michael moore visited a crowded uptown theater. his film, "capitalism, a love story," takes a look at the country's financial collapse. the movie opens nationwide friday. critics of the movie say that moore offers no solutions to the country's financial problems.

>> what you just heard there was a bit of a concert tonight at fedex field. the world renowned rock band u2 played for thousands of people tonight. it was all scheduled to begin around 7:00 making for a tough community for some drivers around parts of the beltway. darcy spencer live from fedex field with more on that's. >> reporter: hi, jim. last month, thousands of fans had troubled getting to the paul mccartney concert. there were major traffic and parking problems but tonight, there was not a repeat performance. things went very smoothly for u2. ♪ two things i need you to know ♪ >> reporter: thousands of fans packed into fedex field for the u2 concert, a leg of the rock group's north american 360 tour. a gigantic spaceship-like stage allowed fans to see the

performers from all sides. >> pennsylvania avenue. >> you look at that structure and think that, you know, someone designed it and someone came up with it and created it. pretty unbelievable to see it live. >> first concert i ever saw was u2 in dublin so this is their first concert. >> reporter: fans were estimated at more than 80,000, comparable to a skins home game. fans came from as far away as ireland to see the band. >> we're from dublin, ireland, and we came over especially to see the u2 concert. we've seen, this is our fourth concert of the tour. >> reporter: the concert started at 7:00. many arrived hours early to mak sure they didn't miss a minute. tailgating in the parking lot resembled a football sunday at fedex field. >> just one of the greatest fans ever for like theast 30 years, so it's my husband and my first time seeing them and some of the rest of our crew have seen them quite a few times. so, yeah, we're just super

researcher who studied the effects of drugs on the brain is dead of an apparent overdose. her live-in boyfriend who did similar research is facing drug charges. 29-year-old dr. kerry johns died sunday shortly after injecting herself with a drug used to treat heroin addiction. her live-in boyfriend told police he'd gotten the drug from an online pharmacy in the philippines. he is a post-doctoral research fellow at the university of maryland medical school. charging documents say the

couple ran a marijuana-growing operation at their home. a man suspected of plotting a terrorist attack in new york pleaded not guilty today. najibullah zazi was in court for the first time in new york city since he was arrested in colorado earlier this month. prosecutors say he was involved in a conspiracy to bomb the new york city transit system. investigators say he has three accomplices but they're not saying much more about that. new york police say the suspects pose no threat to the city now. metro is about to begin keeping a closer eye on its passengers. it's all part of a grant from the department of home alone security and because of that, metro will be able to install surveillance cameras aboard all of its buses and trains. the transit agency says they will monitor suspicious activity and share it live with transit officers. metro also will add 25 transit police officers, some bomb detecting dogs and a 20-member antiterrorism team.

the new season of the biggest loser program is under way and a local football coach wasn't on e show but he

deserved to be. ralph friedgen's, maryland football team is struggling with losses on the field, but the coach has had a great loss off the field that makes him feel a lot better. lindsay czarniak has this story. >> ralph friedgen is known as a terrific motivator, also a great father. but for years, it seemed he took the time to take care of everyone else while neglecting his own weight issues. he said it was hard to go up the stairs without losing his breath. about a year ago he started a new diet and everything has changed. he has earned more respect from his players and a new lease on life. for nine years, ralph frigen or "fridge" as he's called has been a fixture on the sideline. he now looks very different. since october, he's lost more than 105 pounds on the medifast diet. he knew it was difficult but necessary. >> when i went to the doctor, he said you're 60 years old now and

when things start going bad, they're going to go bad, so this is kind of a thing i knew i had to do. it was kind of a lifestyle change i had to make. so, there's a lot of benefits from, you know, from losing weight. i told medifast i have ten things publicly i could say that i do better now and probably ten things privately i could say i do better now. >> it's a weight loss program that uses prepared meals along with meals clients make themselves. for friedgen, it's been the perfect answer for his busy lifestyle. >> i'll have oatmeal, one of these packets. medifast, put this in four ounces of water. microwave it for a minute and 30 and i'm good to go for three hours. >> the key, to eat every three hours. that means a medifast bar followed by soup and if he needs a snack, he's got options from pretzels to proceed dean balls. >> at dinner, i have what they

call a lean and green. i have fish, chicken or steak, eight ounces, and then a granny vegetable. my favorite's [ ly. la broccoli, last night it spinach. salad and balsamic vinegar dressing. >> and he's getting attention. andy reid caught wind of his weight loss, so reid called friedgen to get the information and he's now following suit. the coaches feel so good, they actually joke about the suits they can wear when they hit their goal. >> all the fat coaches in america can get skinny again. andy's talking about doing, he's talking about seeing if he c do a swimsuit calendar together. >> what do you think? >> i told him i have the speedo and he has the thong. >> well, my question is, what month would you want if you were part of that swimsuit calendar? >> probably december.

>> you're supposed to be on the cover. >> oh, the cover. >> a lot of people might buy that if he was on the cover of a swimsuit calendar. you guys think so? >> hmm -- >> all right. enough said, ralph friedgen. >> we're proud of him for what he's doing for his health. >> and they should be proud of him. his daughter went on a diet with him, she lost 40 pounds. the company has made him a spokesperson for medifast and there is a business relationship there and it's becoming much more popular for people especially with the coaching lifestyle. >> good for him. you got good news about our weather? >> we do. a little bit of cool weather. >> windy out there, too. >> have to burn some calories out there. today, we see the wind and you could see the waves in the atmosphere. sometimes, i talk about these waves. there's a standing wave right over us. you can see the clouds coming by, but those clouds -- those lines almost appear stationary. our high temperature there, and

they've gone out there now, reached 70 degrees. our average 74 degrees. that bright object near the moon right now, the skies are clear. that's jupiter. here's the same clouds from outer space. this is the polar orbiting the nasa satellite. there they are lined up over the mountain, and as the wind goes, it rises and as it is sinks, the waves form those clear areas. right now, it's pretty clear and chilly. 60 degrees. out in the mountains, spots around charlottesville right now, 53 degrees. look at the high temperatures. got friends down in florida? vero beach today, 93 degrees, a record high temperature. at the same time, up around buffalo and chicago, temperatures for highs are only in the 50s as they are right now. as a matter of fact, some spots heading into the 40s up around new york state. can still see there overall pattern as the jet stream is coming in over us bringing in the school air that continues to come in as we go through the 90time hours, we're going to see that. look at lake placid right now.

had a quarter of an inch of rain again today. temperatures 50 degrees, good old ironwood peninsula. they could be looking at some snow as i think they will be out in utah. here's a pattern. there's a spin in the atmosphere. there's going to be an area of low pressure forming and moving up through utah on into the northern plains. overnight tonight, what we'll be seeing is some in and out clouds, but then with time, big area of high pressure comes in. so as we get on into thursday and especially friday, high pressure in on us. light winds, a chilly morning tomorrow morning. into the 50s. rise to only the high 60s but the winds not as high as they have been. tomorrow morning when you get up and head out, i think there will be some clouds, especially in lowdon county and 40s to low 50s. as today, mixture of sunshine

bull pen. desmond coming on for the nats of late. second big home run, makes it 3-2. bottom of the eighth, game tied at 3. desmond hits it sharp up the middle. anderson hernandez stops it, flips to castillo. his relay wild, nats up 4-3. mike mac doug al on for the same. one on for david wright. deep fly ball. i love good catches. look at dukes tracking it. whoa! leaps and makes the great catch to end it. look at this, this is my favorite part. he says, come on, buddy, give me some ve. the nats win it, 4-3. moving to the capitals. they always have baseball fans but with other teams in the area struggling and with the potential on this rosterer, they are one of the teams that provides the biggest hope for gog a long way this season. experts' early predictions are extremely high for the capitals and part of that is because alex ovechkin is like a fine wine, he gets better and wiser with age.

auto manufacturer toyota says it will recall nearly 4 million vehicles in the u.s. it's the largest recall ever in the company's history. toyota's reporting safety problems linked to removable floor mats. apparently, the mats in some toyota and lexus vehicles could interfere with the vehicle's accelerator and cause a crash. the vehicles being recalled incluld toyota camrys, avalons, priuses and tacomas.

also the tundra, lexus es350 and the lexus is250 and iis 350. owners are encouraged to take out the floor mats on the driver's side and don't replace them. montgomery county officials want speeders to stop speeding. the council is asking the public for ideas on how to accomplish that. leaders held a forum tonight. >> we live on a busy intersection and watched more and more cars speeding through ourneighborhood. >> speed humps are the most effective and sustainable method of bringing speeders into compliance with our street's some speed limit. >> right now, speed bumps and cameras are two main weapons they use to slow down speeding drivers. >> we'll be right back.

there's a brand-new art exhibit in dietz december. it's called "windows into d.c." as the name suggestions, installations by 13 local artists are covering the windows around the washington convention center. kids with a new community for children youth group created a mural showing he was the surrounding hinshaw neighborhood looks from their point of view. exhibit will be there through next month. that's pretty nice. >> it is pretty nice. good use of that space.
