gentzler. >> i'm jim gantz. transportation workers will meet in the morning to determine when they will pretreat the roads. >> reporter: i think we may see a little touch of snow around here, the main impact will be in the kind of weather nobody likes to see, that is in the form of ice. this is the area that's under a winter storm watch and it is a watch. not a warning, just a possibility that especially in the shenandoah valley and spots across western maryland there could be nasty winter weather as we go through tomorw night. no problems tonight or tomorrow. the main impacts will be more well to the west across northern maryland and unfortunately into the western parts of pennsylvania. those are the areas that could be really suffering, with some significant icing. meanwhile, overnight tonight. for us, skies have cleared, it is cold, we have one of the ingredients of cold air in honest. i think it will be mainly a rain

producer in the immediate washington area. some of us are going to be seeing a period of iciness tomorrow night. back to you. >> see you in a minute, thank you, bob. a woman and her newborn daughter are resting in the hospital after a fright thing attack, police say another woman tried to cut the baby out of the mother's stomach. neighbors called for help after seeing the woman running and screaming. jane watrell is in prince georges county with more on this story. >> reporter: even the police are calling this story bizarre, and a 40-year-old woman is under arrest for attempted murder and holding another woman hostage. behind the walls of her apartment, police are calling it a house of horrors. 40-year-old veronica doramous is under arrest for holding that woman hostage. she tried to cut the near term fetus out of her victim's womb using a box cutter. somehow the naked victim managed

to escape and run into the apartment complex's parking lot. >> apparently the victim and the suspect met each other last tuesday or sometime around that time at a homeless shelter in washington, d.c.. the suspect brought the victim back to her apartment. and after what we believe a day or so tied up the victim and at some point cut her, we believe on saturday. possibly an attempt to remove the victim's baby. it's a bizarre case, something that our detectives have not seen. it's just -- it's bizarre. >> how messed up is that? i mean, that's crazy. people are getting crazy out here. >> when you saw her, was she bleedi? >> reporter: neighbors called 911 after they saw the dazed and bleeding pregnant woman in the parking lot. she was rushed to the hospital there at a local hospital, an

emergency c-section was performed, the mother and the baby are doing fine, she had a baby girl, and she named her miracle sky. in the meantime, the 40-year-old woman, her name is veronica deramus is under arrest, charged with attempted murder. she made her first court appearance today. doreen, back to you. >> thank you, jane with. a decision on whether to bring slot machines to anne arundel county is still being considered. the council is expected to vote tonight on a large slots parlor at anne arundel shopping mall. supporters say slots will bring in much needed revenue and create 4,000 jobs. opponents say gambling is not good for the county, and it would cause congestion and other problems. if the measure passes, the development would be the largest slots casino in the state.

people who live in parts of the district are being advised to boil their tap water for at least the next two days. the d.c. water and sewer authority issued the advisory today after experiencing a loss of water pressure in the northwest. it's a problem that can affect water quality, about 750 businesses and homes between 16th and 8th streets, north of burn streets are affected by the advisory. there's no evidence of contamination, but asks residents to boil water for one minute before using to be safe. a local woman is recovering tonight from a pit bull attack, she's alive thanks to a man she doesn't know who risked h eed he to save hers. >> reporter: this man is in town trying to find a job on the hill. all the factors converged this weekend to put him in the right place at the right time to save the life of a stranger.

>> reporter: eaves johnson heard the screams coming from the alley behind the home where he's staying. >> i ran downstairs and the screaming got loud quickly. >> reporter: he got close, it was a terrifying sigtsd. >> i saw a girl, and a pit bull that had her forearm. >> reporter: johnson jumped the fence to the yard and went into action. >> i jumped on the dog and started hitting him in the nose, trying to get him to let go. luckily he did. >> as the victim layed dazed and bleeding, the dog was still on the attack. and johnson had to wrestle the animal into the cage in the backyard. no easy task. >> he was very very strong, i thought he was going to slip loose a few times. really scary. >> this woman had severe injuries, it was a vicious attack by this dog. it's a dog she knew, we're not sure why the dog turned. >> johnson had saved the victim's life, others in the home called the police and paramedics, they arrived but the

ordeal still wasn't over. andy soleburg described a 90-minute stand-off. >> the dog breaks free while the animal control officers are trying to get them under control and attacks the ofcer. he's able to fire at the dog and hit them at least once. >> we heard shots at the house, it's unfortunate it had to end that way, when you got an animal attacking someone. >> the dog was eventually euthanized and it may never be clear why the animal attacked. the action of eaves johnson stopped this from being a tragic outcome. live in cleveland park, back to you. >> derrick ward, thank. secretary of state, hillary rodham clinton broke her silence today on the murder conviction of the american student amanda knox. an italian court sentenced her to 26 years in prison for the murder of her roommate two years

ago. knox's attorney and parents want to appeal. secretary clinton says the u.s. state department is keeping an eye on the case. >> our counselor affairs personnel have been in regular contact with her, and with her family, i stand ready to meet with anyone who wishes to discuss this case further. >> it could be another year, though, before knox is back in court. coming up tonight, debris from an explosion at a plant in illinois killed a man, nearly a quarter mile away. problems with a fire hydrant caused local crews precious time as flames spread inside a house. a woman would not let go of her purse, even as the train pulled away. you're expected if the redskins are shopping for a new kicker. also, allen iverson making his much-anticipated return for the sixers. and alex ovechkin returns from his suspension.

flying debris from an explosion at a plant in illinois killed a man at a rest stop today. he was filling up his car with gas when he was hit. he was a quarter mile away from where the explosion happened. the plant is located about an hour northwest of chicago. it makes synthetic crystals for computers. the walls of the 55,000 square foot building collapsed because of the blast. nobody at the plant was injured. investigators are looking into a fire high dlanohihigydra. the fire destroyed one family's house and injured eight firefighters, officials say they lost five minutes in their efforts to get this fire put out. the firefighters couldn't get adequate water pressure from a nearby hydrant. there could have been some things sav as a result of that five minutes.

we don't know this fire proceeded to burn for another 45 minutes even after we had water. >> the injured firefighters are all expected to be okay. this fire started accidentally. vincent gray is now officially being officially investigated for work done on his house by a city contractor. gray is said to be considering a race for mayor next year. the city's consumer affairs office has ordered gray to obtain permits for 10,000 dollars worth of repair work done by the wc smith company. wtlp radio first reported tonight the office of campaign finance is also reviewing the repair expenses as a potential conflict of interest. gray has denied doing anything wrong. a talented local football player is waiting for a bone marrow transplant. some are asking whether a cash reward to a donor could help him

20,000. some people believe those odds could be improved if the government started paying people to be bone marrow donors. i was running the play, i shouldn't have been tired and i knew i shouldn't have been tired. my heart would beat so fast, i couldn't get myself to move my legs, i would be like, what is going on. >> jordan has just started his senior year at princeton university. he was captain of the football team. a talented athlete, hoping to shine in his last year of coege. >> as the week went on, started to get more intense, i started to get headaches, my fingers would start going numb. having trouble walking upstairs, and it got to the point where it really broke my down emotionally. >> reporter: he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare disease where the bone marrow stops producing new blood cells. the cure, a bone marrow transplant. his only sibling was not a match. and there was no suitable donor

in the national registry. >> every year in the country 2,000 people die because they can't find a combatible bone marrow donor. a federal criminal law prevents the one thing that would make a dramatic impact on bone marrow donors, and that's compensate them. >> reporter: a bill asking for compensation, says donors wouldn't be paid in cash, instead they would receive $3,000 in the form of a scholarship, a housing allowance or a gift to charity. we're not creating markets, we're not having highe bidders for bone marrow or anything like that. we want to have compensation for the most-needed donors. >> reporter: too few people donate because giving bone

marrow involves an invasive procedure to get the marrow out of the pelvic bone. unlike other body parts, like the kidney, bone marrow is renewable. but paying people for their body parts would encourage them to lie about diseases. >> they're after the money, the compensation, whatever it is. they may not be as truthful or as honest with you about the whole situation. >> jordan says changing this law could mean the difference between life and death for people like him. >> people don't realize when people need a bone marrow transplant, it's because their life is on the line. and the implications of them not giving their bone marrow are a lot more serious. >> jordan is taking this year off from princeton, but he hopes to get back on the football field next year, he's taking

spots like damascus, 6, almost 7 inches of snow, washington less than a half inch of snow, look at the temperatures around the country now, this is midwiner, brutal cold. 20 below zero in great falls. that cold clashing with warm air to the south, and with the pattern, not only is it cold, but very very dry air, that's the reason at the surface, we'll have that dry air, unfortunately that will promote more freezing rain than anything else for the shenandoah valley for a time. look at the areas through the mid part of the country. there are blizzard warnings out now four southern minnesota and northern with a wash here's the storm, the wave in the atmosphere. it's moving through the southwest, through the great lakes, will be on the mild side at least at the higher levels, unfortunately, with high pressure in on us, i think tomorrow with sunshine and clear skies, by the time the storm moves well to the west, there will be a period of some

freezing rain and sleet for you folks, shenandoah valley, western maryland, those areas that do get a fair amount of ice, for us, right around the metropolitan area, mainly a rain producer and it could be moderate to heavy rains tomorrow night, here's the way i see it tomorrow night, that is. brief period of snow, i think more and more now it will be after the evening rush hour tomorrow, 8:00, 9:00, maybe wet snowflakes, maybe a period of sleet, especially through the western suburbs, out there, not a serious icing event. however, shenandoah valley, northern parts of maryland, western maryland and on up into pennsylvania, could be some serious icing before it changes over to rain later on tomorrow nigh tomorrow, cloudy, to some breaks in the clouds, there may be a period of sunshine midmorning before that storm really begins to come our way. just cloudy tomorrow, i think the rains and for a brief period, iciness may start well after the evening rush hour,
