we'll have reports on road conditions, efforts to keep you safe and how snow can be big business, but we begin with chief meteorologist bob ryan in the storm center. >> the good word is this is moving fairly fast, but it is producing light to moderate snow. in some spots more than five inches of snow. snow continues. as a matter of fact, there is a band of moderate snow right now moving through loudoun county heading up into montgomery county. we are still almost all of us under a winter storm warning. it is snowing in southern maryland, too. this is at the freezing mark. most areas around the freezing mark meaning it is a wet snow. you can see the back end of this fast-moving band of snow, area of snow already beginning to move into the shenandoah valley. as we go through the nighttime hours, as we get through 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, we'll see it wind down right in town three to four inches. and to our south, too. some areas are ending up with

more than six inches of snow. i'll tell you the timeline, move things up a little and what about the weekend? i'll join you in a few minutes. different neighborhoods will see different accumulations and different problems. darcy spencer will show us who is monitoring it in montgomery county tonight. >> reporter: we are getting heavy and steady snowfall here in rockville. go to other parts of montgomery county, it may be a different story. that's where the storm center comes into play here, making sure that the resources go where they're needed most. >> you're going to have snow over this top layer of ice. >> reporter: in montgomery county storm operations center in gaithersburg, they are monitoring the temperature. the information about

prioritized resources, crews know where the problem spots are around the county. >> some storms deposit more snow to the north than south. quite often conditions are different from one end of the county north to south, east to west. >> reporter: here in montgomery county, some 400 trucks pro positioned along heavy-used routes waiting for the snow to pile up. because the roads have been salted and sanded during saturday's storm they were essentially pretreated. >> we'll be out there all night, if need be. at the very least, will make the rush hour tonight and the rush hour in the morning safe. >> reporter: over the weekend, many were caught off guard by icy road conditions. >> this time we are going to have troopers out there in visible locations. hopefully to inform the general public to slow down. >> reporter: as the snow continues to fall into the evening hours, motorists were

already having trouble on the road waist. >> i came from upper marlboro here to rockville. i just took my time. the roads aren't that bad. it's wet but starting to freeze up. i worry about the other people that are speeding. that's my concern. >> reporter: back live, this is rockville pike. there is a lot of snow on the ground. also slush. there is quite a bit of traffic coming through here. fortunately, they seem to be going a little bit slower. transportation officials say take care. they could be difficult in the morning. make sure you allow yourself extra time and take it easy out there on the roads. live from rockvill darcy spencer, news4. for more on the road conditions we go to ashley linder. >> reporter: good eveng. well, it is messy out there tonight. the problem we've got around the region, you're going to find that goode drive is shut down in both directions. this is the issue on 355. roads are covered.

we have an overturned tanker truck that is goingo shut things down between pacard drive and gaither road. we have very slushy conditions. unfortunately, people are getting overzealous. they see the back top and think they can go as fast as they want to go. that's not the case. monitor speeds out there and be in good shape. a lot of people are getting tired of shoveling, stucking up on food and changing their plans. others see the snow and think dpreen. jackie bensen is in tysons corner with the big business that is snow in the washington area. >> reporter: it is big business. we want to give you a feeling for what it looks like right now. route 123 which is behind me, passable. people are out tonight. tomorrow, this is what you want to watch out for. so many people are trying to save a little money by not

plowing multiple times during the storm. parking lots are a little slippery tonight. what is a frozen inconvenience for some is money in the bank for others. this winter's snowfall has been very welcomed to shows who earn extra money treating and plowing the roads. one of those is merryfield garden center. >> we are able to keep our guys busy. we are not putting sod down or planting right now, but it's great to give the guys work and opportunity to make money. >> those cleared roads are important to drivers from papa john's paysa in merryfield. when it snows people stay in and order pizza.

heads of the five major u.s. intelligence agency said today that another attempted terror attack in this country is certain. they told congress an attempted attack by al qaeda could happen in the next three to six months. they are warning it could be carried out by recruits in a minimal amount of training using simple devices. leon panetta cited the attempted attack on christmas day as an example. he said the suspect had a u.s. advi visa. family members flew from nigeria and worked with the fbi to get him to cooperate. he is talking again to investigators and providing valuable information that is aggressively being pursued in yemen. his cooperation could be in preparation for a guilty plea which would spare him the death penalty. still ahead on news4 at

the police have just made an arrest in the murder of a woman and her 8-year-old son in prince william county in virginia. 47-year-old natalia wilson is charged with two counts of murder. 41-year-old slavka naydenova and her son paul wilson were called in a house in dale city last night. paul wilson was a second grader at mount porter traditional

school in woodbridge. police say her husband found the bodies when he returned home from work. investigators say the suspect and the victims knew each other. police say alcohol was a factor in a crash that killed two men in adell guy, maryland, last night. the two were involved in a minor accident before 11:00. the men were exchanging information on the side of the road after that accident when another driver suddenly plowed into them. now both men's families want that driver to pay for cutting two lives short. >> we just lost a hard-working man who was happy all the titi. 4:30 this morning we get a phone call that alex is dead because of a drunk driver. >> she didn't think about anybody else except her. >> police have not yet charged the 30-year-old woman who was driving. the state'ser to's office says

charges could sake several days. the associated press is reporting that prosecutors in los angeles wil file a criminal complaint to charge michael jackson's doctor with involuntary manslaughter. last month there was word that prosecutors would seek a grand jury indictment against dr. conrad murray. those proceedings would have kept evidence secret, but a criminal complaint will give the public an earlier look at the evidence. muay is accused of giving jackson a lethal dose of propofol. still to come tonight, toyota is the target of sharp criticism from the transportation secretary, while sales are taking a hit. first slots are not up and running yet. >> and the latest on the snowfall.

insurance company aig is planning to shell out another round of employee bonuses tomorrow. the company took serious heat last year for giving out bonuses after taking a taxpayer-funded bailout. "the washington post" reports tomorrow's bonuses will total about $100 million. workers agreed to smaller bonuses to get them a month earlier. aig will use the savings to help

pay back the government. president obama says he wants to reuse bailout money to help small businesses. the president was in new hampshire today emphasizing his focus on creating jobs. obama proposed using $30 billion from repaid bailout money to help small businesses hire workers. the public and critics want the funds returned to the treasury department to help pay off the debt. the president's budget proposal ends tax cuts for the wealthy and will cut spending on programs such as nasa. even before slots have opened in maryland, some state law makers are talking about table games to generate more money. state delegate frank turner told "the washington examiner" he'll file legislation to add poker, blackjack and craps to slot sites. they would require a ballot vote which means law makers would

have to wait until 2012 if not done by the november election. opponents call the measure premature. they want to wait to determine the impact of slots first. u.s. transportation secretary is blasting toyota for its slow realization about the scope of its vehicle safl problems. lay lahood said toyota was a little, "safety deaf" and officials needed to wake them up. the government has considered civil penalties against the car maker. the executive vice president said repair parts are on the way to dealers right now. it appears the safety concerns are beginning to affect toyota sales. sales were down 8. 7% in january compared to a year ago. ford sales are up 35%. jn motors reports sales gained of more than 23%. the company says its chevy, buick, gmc and cadillac brands have seen retail increases four

months in a row. so, are we going to need the suv on the roads? >> by tomorrow morning it will be pretty much out of here. once again, it's a pretty snow out there. snow haters will say enough with the pretty snow, i want it out of here. here we are in february. our temperature outside, 33. above freezing. what a difference from the saturday snow. look at the temperatures around the east. saturday we had that very, very dry air in on us. now we've got a wet snow clinging to everything. that means it's slippery but moving right along. the pattern that we've seen, there is our little wave in the atmosphere. once again we have a strong jet to the south. once again i think there will be as we get late into the week and weekend another bigger storm forming to our south. this is a washington bull's-eye. you can see where the winter storm warning advisory is.

this area of moderate snow is coming in. it's been an hour or two earlier coming around washington, gaithersburg out into loudoun county. folks in southern ryland, you will still be getting the tail end of it as all of this begins to rapidly move out. in west virginia it's breaking out there. our weather watcher, six inches of snow. three inches around poolsville. another wave over us moving on out tomorrow morning. more cold air. a fair amount of sunshine tomorrow. the streets during the evening rush hour should be in good shape. here we are right now with that area of moderate snow over us. i move things up by 3:00, 4:00 in the morning. trailing edge of the snow begins to move through warrenton, leesburg into fredericksburg.

by 6:00, 7:00 in the morning for the morning rush hour, most everything is out of here. there will be trailing wet snow, maybe a couple, even four inches for you folks into southern maryland. especially upper parts of montgomery county, frederick county. high spots of loudoun county. some spots may still get five or six inches of wet snow in and around town, two or three then we'll see the clouds break up. sunshine coming out tomorrow afternoon, obviously. morning rush hour will be slow going. the evening should be much better. temperatures will be staying above freezing through the evening rush hour. later on tomorrow night, temperatures tumble into the 20s. a couple of days of sunshine. then the next storm which shows signs of being a bigger east coast storm late friday into saturday with temperatures into th 30s. next week our wintry pattern

a 14-year-old girl down in new zealand single-handedly fought off a shark using her boogie board. the shark swam up to liddie yesterday and bit through were wetsuit. her first instinct was to hit the shark on the nose. she was back on the beach again today. a german shepherd fished out of a river in los angeles was reunited with his owner today. 4-year-old spiky the dog was rescued by helicopter after he

got stuck in fast-rushing water last month. he wasn't injured, but he did bite the rescuer who saved him. that meant the dog needed to be checked for rabies until today. i tested negative. the fire fighter has a broken thumb but says it was well worth it to save the dog's life. mr. las vegas canceled his famous show tonight to go before law makers in richmond. talking about wayne newton, of course. he testified before a virginia house of delegates committee on behalf of his tribe. he asked for official recognition of the tribe from the commonwealth. newton's visit paid off. the committee voted unanimously to recognize the tribe. newton was born in virginia but moved out of state when he was
