much snow. >> i've had plenty of snow. no more shoveling, no more days off from school. >> i am totally through with all the snow. i enjoy it. but it's been pretty taxing. >> reporter: jackie bensen, news4. good morning. welcome to "news4 today." i'm kimberly suiters in for joe krebs. >> i'm eun yang. it's wednesday, february 3rd, 2010. a live look out of mclean, virginia, the thick snow hanging on some of the branches. the roads are clear, but you have to be careful of the side streets. they're still slushy this morning. >> the federal government is open today with an unscheduled looefl policy. a number of closings and delays to tell you about. this just in, montgomery county and charles county schools are closed. in virginia, fairfax county, prince william county, manassas

city and loudoun county schools all closed. alexandria schools are on a two-hour delay. also closed today are clark county, culpepper, frederick, orange and page county schools. rappahannock, shenandoah and spotsylvania schools all closed. >> in west virginia berkeley, grant, hardy and jefferson county schools are all closed. mineral and morgan county schools are also closed. >>we have team coverage out in the snow. >> megan mcgrath is surveying the roads in virginia. tracee wilkins in live in maryland. but we begin with meteorologist tom kierein who has the details on the forecast and the chance of more snow coming. >> if you're sick of it, get ready to get sick some more. more to come. as we take a look now, it's over. this one is done. these are the reports we've had. snow totals generally around three to four inches around the metro area and the nearby suburbs, a few high spots to the west had around five or six.

those were isolated areas. temperatures at or a little below freezing, now 32 in washington. many of the roads are wet this morning and kind of slushy. here is the view from space. over the last six hours we've seen the storm rapidly move to the north and east. it could be affecting travel up and down the atlantic seaboard from new york city into southern new england, there may be minor flight delays. high pressure coming back today bringing back sun and milder temperatures. a lot of melting and standing water from the snow quickly melting today. more melting tomorrow, too, with lots of sunshine. morning low ins the mid 20s. we may have patchy ice tomorrow morning. a lot of melting tomorrow afternoon. a major storm developing for friday afternoon and evening into saturday. we could get heavy snow. highs on friday before the snow arrives in the mid 30s, then below freezing once the snow starts. it's going to stick and it will be with us all the way through much of saturday before it ends saturday afternoon and evening. highs only near 30 on saturday.

it's going to be around for a while. jerry, somehow the wednesday traffic? >> volumewise obviously lighter than normal. conditionwise not too bad. the enter states and the major secondary roadways are cleared. back of the neighborhoods you may have issues. be careful on sidewalks. if they haven't been treated, they could be on the slick side. in clarksburg, 270 moving nicely. downtown, lower 14th street right at the intersection of pennsylvania avenue, look at that. it's shiny. so it could be a little icy. for the most part very, very drivable. be very cautious this morning. we've just gotten the alert that d.c. public schools and offices are open and on time today. d.c. public schools open and on time. prince george's county schools are closed this morning. montgomery county schools are closed and fairfax county schools are closed as well. all that snow could make for a difficult commute. >> megan mcgrath is in mclean where drivers might have trouble

getting around. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: doesn't look too bad. you can bet my children are hoping anne arundel is closed. we'll wait and see. take a look at chain bridge road behind me. you can see a bit of a machine on the roadway. we've seen a number of plows go through. they've gotten the lion's share of the road off the surface. there is a little slush. you can see by the machine that we're dealing with not just wet pavement, there's a little coding onhe road here. by and large major roads look great. they were out there in full force treating them, plowing overnight. major roads basically are just wet. what you're going to encounter is when the plows come through, theys to around some of this snow. it is a very heavy snow. you can see that in some areas you're going to have an accumulation of snow, big piles, chunky slush like this. this sa little difficult, a little slick to drive through. again, it's in scattered spots here, not like this all the way across the driving lanes here.

you're going to encounter stuff like this here and there, on the ramps, on the side of the road. the neighborhood streets, there are some neighborhood streets that have not been touched. this is corner lane you're looking at down there. if you look down over by where it starts to dip down at that hill, you can see it does not look like we've seen a plow through here at all. of course, they're concentrating on the primary streets. the neighborhood streets are not their main concern. that's going to be your main challenge. you should be out once you get out to the major roads. we talked to a gentleman a little while ago, a contractor out there plowing some of the sidewalks and things in the area. and he kind of described what he's been seeing this morning. >> they're clearing up real nicely. they're not working too much back in the neighborhoods yet. but even at that the accumulation of snow isn't that bad in the neighborhoods. i don't find it bad at least. but four-wheel drive full of guy, plenty of weight to push me through it. >> reporter: give yourself a little extra time and stay out

of the way of the plows. we still have quite a few plows trying to clean things up here. it should be okay once you hit those major roads. back to you in the studio. >> service with a smile. what a nice attitude this morning. >> reporter: let me know about anne arundel county. >> o karks we will. it looks like the snowflakes are still falling over in maryland. let's check out how the reds are there. >> tracee wilkins is live in largo. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. we're right between harry s. truman drive and 202. let me tell you the main roads around prince george's county look great. we took central avenue down this way. bacally what you're dealing with, just a bunch of wet roads. on the secondary roads in a neighborhood like this one, what we have, some accumulation and also some slush you'll have to deal with as well. now, i feel, after experiencing this snow and what we had on saturday, i think i prefer dry snow, because this is really messy, messy to walk in and

messy to drive in. let me show you what 202 is looking like. wet roads. that's going to meet road spray. make sure you have your windshield wipers ready to go and windshield wiper fluid in there and it's working, it's going to be a messy drive for you definitely. so wet and slushy and all that good stuff. but we don't have a lot of accumulation on the main road ways. that's what's important. you should see fine commute this morning. no major issues coming in. and just take your time and give yourself plenty of space. we've got lots of crews still out there working, still putting down the salt. still coming and shoveling some of this stuff out of the way for you. let me also point this out, if you hit chunks of snow like this one here, know it's soft. it's not ice and not something that's going to make it difficult for you to get through. just a wet, sticky, slushy snow, one of many we've had this winter. we'll have more coming our way fairly soon. enjoy it. but take your time and be

your main roads, basically wet roads. we saw the same thing on central avenue. the crews have done a great job of getting out here and cleaning up this snow. look out for road spray, look form it to be a messy commute on your windshield. you should be fine coming down the road as long as you take yo time. plenty of wetness and slush especially inome of the turn lanes. back out here live on mt. lavinchia way, you can see what it looks like on the side streets. you more accumulation here. these big chunks, it looks like it would be ice. it's not. it's just one big ball of slush i can step on and i sure you can drive through without any issue. this is the stuff that can cause your car to spin out if you're going too fast. look out for areas like this when you're driving through. last night it was absolutely beautiful. you still have some of those picturesque scenes. the trees are covered with snow and the homes, and unfortunately the cars. it should be easy for you to

knock it off. we're not looking at any ice, not any hard stuff. just wet slushy snow. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo. >> you're an old snow pro. thanks. the overnight snowfall is affected metro services this morning. metro rail is open and expected to operate on a normal schedule this morning. empty trains were running throughout the night to prevent the tracks from icing up. metro buses a different story this morning. only traveling on snow emergency routes and the main road ways where streets are passable, metro access is offering regular service. some trips may be delayed due to poor roa conditions. the snow could have an impact at the airport. crews were getting ready last night at reagan national airport. we learned all three local airports are operating normally. you want to check with your airlines before heading out to make sure your flight has not been canceled or delayed. iran launched another rocket into space. state tv showed images of it

this morning. it carried a mouse, turtles and worms. officials didn't elaborate on what purposes it might have. they have put two rockets into space over the last two years. president obama is meeting with his national security team today at the white house. this comes on the very same day as mentioned iran launching a rocket that could carry a satellite into space. it could lls one day be used to launch warheads, an ongoing concern for u.s. officials. the cia is also issuing a fresh warning that al qaeda may be plotting attacks within the u.s. in the coming months. >> in the next three to six months, high or low? >> an attempted attack, the priority is certain i would say. >> mr. pinetta? >> i would agree with that. >> intelligence officials also say that al qaeda may be using clean recruits who have no ties or contacts to known terrorists. authorities say the man

accused of trying to blow up a northwest airlines flight on christmas day is cooperating with them. the fbi reportedly pursueded umar far rum ab dull my tall lab's family to convince the young nigerian man that heould be treated fairly if he worked with federal agents. they say he's been providing intelligence in several investigations, even talking about his contacts in yemen. today a haitian judge decides whether to charge the ten american missionaries or release them. yesterday only the women american missionaries appeared before a judge. haiti's communications minister said the missionaries pleaded their case but did not have lawyers present. the missionaries insist they have done nothing wrong. they were arrested last week trying to cross into the dominican republic with a bus filled with 33 children. the church members said they were orphaned after the aerth quake. haitian police say some of the children have parents who are

don't blame it on the bosanova. el nino, the abnormal warming of the pacific oceans causes high upper level winds to streak across the atlantic and usually taking the storm tracks to the south, the storm this morning has exited the region. no precipitation on radar. left in its wake around three to four inches, a little more farther west and north. temperatures in the 20s to near 30 degrees. now 32 in washington. that storm quickly moved through. overall, as far as snowstorms go, it kind of has had a minimal impact on our region. we'll get the sunshine back today. and thankfully get quite a bit above freezing. a lot of melting and tomorrow, sunny, loot of melting again after perhaps a morning freeze. could have iciness tomorrow ght. a major storm can come our way friday afternoon and evening into saturday. this could affect travel up and down the atlantic seaboard. looks like a major storm. could have heavy snow beginning

northern virginia. let's head first to tracee wilkins live in largo, maryland. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we have seen folks out this morning shoveling. you almost have this whole driveway done. it didn't take you any time. >> i can't take a whole lot of time. got to keep moving. >> what do you think of the snow? >> it's easy to snosnovl. not deep. maybe two or three inches. >> are you looking forward to getting out on the roads, are you worried about what you have to look forward to out there? >> no. we just finished a school up the street, a church and day care center. we're doing a private driveway here. i'm looking forward to getting out and making some money. >> what did you find out there? >> roads were passable, really wet. not a problem at all. >> thank you for talking with us this morning. that's what we found. let me show you what 202 is looking like. wet roads, as raymond just said, we're seeing issues of road spray. definitely going to need to have

your windshield wipers working and fluid out and ready to go. 202 is very wet. central av my is looking wet as well. a nice light, fluffy said. as they saed. it's shovable. they're doing this very quickly. you can see all the way down to the driveway. that's how you know you've got good shovable snow you're dealing with. side streets will be your main issue. let me show you the side street out here. you can see where the plows have come through. you've still got some snow here. it's really come pablthed here. this makes it a little slippy when you're walking. you know it's going to be slippery when you're driveing. getting out of your neighborhood maybe an issue. we'll hear from computer who did just that coming up. >> tracee, what's the going rate to have your driveway shoveled? >> reporter: i wonder. how much do you charge to shovel a driveway? oh, way, we can't say.

it depends on your driveway. let's put it that wa it depends on the driveway. he's not going to give a price. depends on the driveway. >> thanks, tracee. >> smart businessman. west goudie drive is still closed after tanker truck overturned last night. investigators believe slick roads were to blame for and accident which happened near crabs branch way. diesel fuel spewed onto the roadway. the driver was not hurt. megan mcgrath is checking the roads in northern virginia this morning. she joinless us from mclean with an update. >> you can see by looking at the bushes behind me here what kind of a snow we got in mchear. you can see we've got a couple of inches. the snow is sticking to everything, to the tree branches, the power lines. as we were driving here we hit areas where the tree branches were sagging down a little bit because of just the weight of the snow on top of them. and the same thing with the

power lines here. but not hearing of any major problems with respect to that. we did get quite a bit of snow. the snow removal crews, they have been out there. we have seen plow after plow. here comes one on queue right now, coming down chain bridge road. they are out there. they've been doing their job. they pretreated the roads. they've been out all night plowing and puting down the chemicals. the major roads look pretty good. some slush here and there between the lanes and on the sides of the roadway. by and large, the driving lanes look pretty good. keep your speeds down a little bit because it is kind of cold out here. we do have some slush. but once you get out of your neighborhood, you shouldn't encounter too many problems. it is the neighborhood that could give you a little headache this morning. a lot of those neighborhood streets have not yet been plowed. we talked to one gentleman who said even so it wasn't bad. >> i think the roads are mostly just wet, a little slush here and there, but not near li as bad as it was last weekend. >> how is your neighborhood?

mineral and morgan county schools are also closed. if you have to go now the virginia this morning, you could have trouble getting around. the snow has made for a tough comme on local roadways. news4's megan mcgrath is live out with a check. rrp good morning. it's your neighborhood that will present the greatest problem here today. this is corner lake in mclean. you can see the buildup of snow that we have here as you head around the corner and off onto chain bridge road. the neighborhood streets a little further down the line there are snow-covered. that street has not seen a plow yet. that's not unusual. in terms of the major streets, they look pretty good. this is chain bridge road. you the can see we do have slush, especially in the center lanes, a little buildup along the side. by and large pretty clear, pretty wet. still a little slick.

you can perhaps see the shean here. keep your speeds down. they look pretty good. when you go out even more major roads, the highways and enter states they look good. they pretreated before this began. they were out through the night plowing and putting down additional chemicals and getting everything cleared for folks to get to work this morning. once you get out of your neighborhood, you shouldn't have too hard a time here. let's come back live and you see some of the work being done there. we have a contractor who might have just driven out of the view here. he's plowing a parking lot here on chain bridge road. we're sing a lot of that kind of activity. a lot of folks are going to have to head out to work. so lots of people who have been up all night long clearing driveways, clearing sidewalks and parking lots. a lot of activity going on out here. but their work is definitely being seen. we are seeing improving conditions out here on the roadways. but certainly a lot of school systems have decided to close

drive tore pay for cutting two lives short. >> we just lost a hard-working man who was happy all the time. at 4:30 this morning we get a phone call that alex i dead because of a drunk driver. >> she didn't think about anybody elsexcept her. i just think that's someone cruel. >> police have not yet charged the 30-year-old woman who was driving. the state's attorney's office says charges could take several days. police made an arrest in the murder of a woman and her 8-year-old son. 37-year-old natalia wilson charged with two counts of murder. slavka nad nova and her son paul wilson were killed on monday night. police say naydenova's husband found the bodies when he returned home from work. investigators say the suspect and victims knew each other. good news for folks with a

heavy foot on the gasd pedal. the top speed in virginia will likely go up. it will raise interstate speeds from 65 to 70 miles an hour. democratic senator and former gubernatorial candidate creigh deeds objected. deeds said the state shouldn't raise the speed limit when there is a transportation funding crisis. the bill is likely to become law. governor bob mcdonnell supported the proposal during his campaign. in maryland the topic is fast money. slots are coming and now some state lawmakers are talking about allowing table games to generate big money. state delegate frank turner told the washington examiner he will file legislation to add poker, blackjack and kraps to slot sites. governor o'malley already said he's not interested. if you want to see tai shan before he leaves the zoo, you have only hours to do it. he's leaving for china tomorrow. today, however, is the last day to see him at the zoo.

under an agreement with the chinese government tai shan was only on loan as part of a breeding program. tomorrow he will travel by fedex along with a 2-year-old female panda from the atlanta zoo. there are a lot of children who don't have to go to school. they may be begging mom and dad to bring them to the zoo. there are hills around the zoo. you can sled and see tai shan. >> a wetter snow than we had over the week end. we will continue to see improving conditions as temperatures get above freezeing. the snow has ended. the storm is over. there is reagan national airport where they had three or four inches. right now 32 degrees under a cloudy sky. let's take a look at radar. no more snow showing up on radar now. we had reports from weather watchers around the region. we appreciate your reports. we've had generally around three to four inches around washington and prince george's, montgomery, fairfax and arlington counties. a few isolated spots did get a

little more farther west and north. mostly rain in the northern neck. some areas just now into the interior part of the neck head, maybe about an inch of snow there. elsewhere temperatures in the 20s to just near 30 degrees. mid 30s on the eastern shore as well as outs of the mountains. we'll have quite a warmup as this day progresses. this is how it's been looking over the last six hours, the storm quickly came through. now it is still snowing up around new york city into southern new england. there may be minor flight delays this morning. here comes the next storm. look at all the rain moving into south texas. that's going to be developing even more rain as it moves into louisiana and mississippi later today. tapping moisture off the gulf of mexico. that's going to be coming up our way by the end of the week. so for today though, we'll get the sunshine back, a lot of melting. watch out for a lot of road spray this norng as we'll have a lot of that snow melting and high water, even some areas that

have some clogged drains and will have highs reaching low 40s again tomorrow with lots of sunshine. a freezeup tonight. watch for patchy ice tonight into tomorrow morning. after thursday's warmth, on friday, clouds return with colder temperatures. probably in the mid 30s before any snow arrives. that may be by noontime. during the afternoon on friday we'll see snow developing. it appears this could be a major storm and could give us heavy snow on friday afternoon and evening into saturday morning. that looks like the time we'll have the heaviest snow. it should be tapering off and ending by saturday afternoon. remaining below freezing once the snow starts all the way into midweek next week. it's going to being a cold pattern after that big srm sunday into monday the sunshine returns. highs only in the 20s to near 30. yes we might have another -- not as big a storm, a minor storm on tuesday. jerry, somehow the traffic? >> some pictures from the rockville area taken a short time ago of an overturned tanker truck on goudie drive in the

>> generally speaking just wet roadways this morning. on the enter states they've been treated very, very well. the secondary roadways look pretty good. the neighborhoods, it will take a little more time for some crews to get out there. this is i-270 southbound approaching 118, be very cautious on the ramps. sharp curbs, elevated road surfaces freeze up before the mainlines do. the trip around town to the wilson bridge, not a problem. however, inner loop of the beltway at allentown road, initial reports of an accident. should be over to the shoulder. in town, rock creek park weigh % atwater side drive is closed because of icy conditions. park police set up a detour. on the rails, doing okay for the most part, metro, vre, brunswick 870 is 23 minutes late this morning. we're bringing you live team coverage of this winter weather. we've been out all night checking out the conditions before you have to head out in it. >> news4's megan mcgrath is in

northern, virginia. she predicted this to be a slushy mess. we begin with tracee wilkins in largo. >> reporter: with we just saw a plow come through this way and they knocked down a lot of the slush here on the secondary road. but roads are, of course, very wet because we've got the slushy wet snow. susan with prince george's county is with us. you have been out doing a lot of work, taking care of the roadways. how are things looking so far? >> roadways look good. crews have been out since late yesterday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. we pretreated the roadways and then, of course, the weather is helping out a lot, too. but we have cleared all of the primaries. they're 100% and they're now focusing on residential. >> how are the residtial streets looking? what do you need from residents to help you guys get through that? >> number one, what we need from residents is if they cannot park off the street, they need to

park on the even-numbered side of the roadways. plows are not that flexible. they need to be able to make a straight shot down a roadway. if they're going to be out, if they have to be out, please drive with a lot of caution. the roads look great. they look slushy. there's still ice patches on there. we've been in the residentials anyway since the snow started to fall, now we'll be bringing in the bigger trucks as well once everything is shoulder to shoulder. >> thank you, susan for joining us live, with the prince george's county department of public works. they've been out all night taking care of the roads. you're looking at wetness on the main roads, starting to hit the secondary streets, hopefully it will be a nice commute. no issues. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo, back to you in the studio. to see how the roads are looking in northern virginia we go right to megan mcgrath. >> reporter: good morning.

it's really the residenal areas. those are the spots that could give you a little trouble this morning. this is corner lane in mclean. you can see it does not appear we've seen any plows through there at all at this point. you can see only of the tracks left in the snow. it's basically snow-covered. folks who live back in there and other streets that haven't been plowed, you'll have a challenge this morning getting out of your neighborhood. once you get out onto some of the streets, you may encounter some of this here, some piles of slh. as the plows go through, theys to this stuff around. sometimes it ends up in piles in the roadway. be aware of that. if you go at any kind of speed and hit a pile of slush like that, you might have trouble maintaining control. in terms of the major roads, they look terrific. this is chain bridge road here. you can see there's a little bit of slush, a little bit of sheen. we're seeing refleck on the road surface from the lights. they've had the plows out all night. they pretreated yesterday before the snow even began to fall.

so they were in good shape. they have been busy. we have seen plow after plow after plow go through this area. they're doing their job. it's looking pretty good. hopefully once folks get out of their neighborhood they shouldn't have any problems. we talked to a gentleman this morning who said to him his commute thus far looking pretty good. >> they haven't plowed our street yet, but it isn't too bad. >> pretty heavy snow. >> it is heavy snow. >> we've noticed power lines are drooping a little bit. >> it seems that every tree at my house is totally covered and every branch. it's beautiful. >> reporter: and we've seen a lot of contractors out there. they've been removing the snow from the parking lots and the sidewalks. talked to one gentleman who said he didn't get any sleep last night. he's out with his crew and they're doing their work. so a lot of progress has been made overnight. the roads look pretty good. the sidewalks are getting as well. give yourself extra time. a lot of kids are out of school.

specifically here yes wr we are they've done a great job. we're here right between 202 and harry s. truman drive. let me show you what the snow is looking like in your yard, especially for all the kids out today. we've got a nice fluffy snow. it's very light, really cool, compacted and, you know, everybody will have fun with that if they want to get out and make some snowmen, they should have a good time. out on the roads, it's slushy, nasty in some parts. but mostly just wet in prince george's county. main roads and also some of the side roads. we talked with one computer a while ago. here is what she had to say about her commute. >> how do the roads look to to you? >> they look pretty good. i thought there was going to be a lot more snow but it's not. you still have to be very cautious. there are slick spots. be very cautious and watch your speed and your distance, and you'll be fine. >> are you leaving a little earlier than you normally do? >> yes, like an hour early because i didn't know what the ad conditions were going to be like. because of that, i wanted to

allow myself extra time. >> reporter: let me tell you, the roads are looking wet. we saw that on central avenue on 202. most of the main roads around the area, and even again these side streets are beginning to look really good, too. here is a note from the prince george's county department of public works. if you live in a corner house or any home that abuts public roadways like this one here, make sure you shovel your sidewalk. the homeowner here had some folks come and do this shoveling for them. that's a good thing. when you don't shovel your sidewalks, that's part of the reason they cancel school for the parents looking and thinking why aren't my kids going to school. if the sidewalks are covered in school and they can't safely walk, that's part of the decision-making process. make sure when you're shoveling that you hit the sidewalks around your house as well. if you're a real shoveller, this snow is nothing. yocan knock this out in a few minutes. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo. >> easier said than done, tracee. thank you. first, a heads up for

we're bringing you live team coverage of this winter weather. we fooef been out all night checking out the streets. >> news4's tracee wilkins is monitoring conditions in maryland. we begin with megan mcgrath. all morning yesterday you were saying you're going to deal with the slushy mess this morning. in the neighborhoods that's very true. >> reporter: it is true. we had quite a bit of snow, between 3 1/2 to 4 inches in mclean. it's a heavy snow clinging to everything. you can see it's sticking to the street sign here. while the crews have been out doing a great job of getting everything off the streets, we are still seeing a lot of snow on some of those residential streets. a lot of cases, the plows just have not been able to get into the neighborhoods. so that means when you head thought morning, you'll be on a road that has not been touched by a plow blade. that could be a bit of a challenge for some folks. as you head out to the major roads though, you really shouldn't have too much of a

probl problem. they did the pretreating before all of this began. they've been removing the snow as well as laying down the salt and chemicals on the road surface. the major roads and highways, they look good this morning. it's going to be getting out of your neighborhood. we have been out and about talking to fks including one gentleman who has been working all night, just about to head home. here is how he describes the conditions. >> the roads right now are fairly nav gabl. pretty well treated. no major issues. >> what about your neighborhood? >> i haven't made it to my neighborhood yet. hopefully it's taken care of by the time i got there. >> he is headed home, just bought a 12-pack of beer at the convenient store. he's going to have relaxing time. >> if you look at the slush piled, because the plows are coming through, they're kicking around a lot of the sfloe and slush. you will encounter piles here and there. if you hit them at any speed, that can cause problems. keep your eye out for the piles

of slush around the corners and the sides of the road. otherwise, should be okay. back to you. >> megan mcgrath in mclean. >> milk, bread and beer. we're also checking things out in maryland. >> tracee wilkins is in largo with more on the conditions out there. good morning. >> good morning. we're right between 202 and harry s. truman drive. 202 is behind me. let me show you what it's looking like out here. this is a good example of what your secondary streets look like. this is after plows hit it. they've come through a couple of times here, two or three times down this road. it's just wet roadway. that's what you're going to find. this is what yr nab hoopd street may look like. they've hit most of this area, too. before they were able to get down that main road way, this is what we saw, a lot of the roadways were looking like this within the actual neighborhoods. when you come out of your neighborhood, you may have the slushy wet snow. then you'll get outnto the street and think, wow, we didn't get much snow. but we did. let me show you what 202 is

looking like. wet roadways. that's what a lot of major roads were looking like. we saw the same thing on central avenue, crews working very quickly. they're saying pretreatment was a big help. also having the plows out and all the salt going out throughout the morning has helped to get the roads cleaned up quickly. they're saying this is the kind of snow they like to clean up. they also have advice for homeowners, this is what susan hubbard had to say. >> number one, what we need in residents, if they can't park off the street, they need to park on the even-numbered side of the roadway. plows aren't that flexible. they need to be able to make a straight shot down a roadway. if they're going to be out f they have to be out, please drive with a lot of caution. >> reporter: remember that you're going to need to shovel your sidewalks. you also need to take care of any roads near a major roadway if you live right near that area. if you're a real shoveller,

there are no series issues with the snow. it's a light fluffy kind of snow. some of this you'll be able to sweep off your stairsnd out of your walkway. the rest you can easily push out of the way. if you've been an expert at this because of all the snow we've been having, you'll laugh at this snow when you go to shovel. get out there and get it done so folks can walk safely on the sidewalks in prince george's and also in the district. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo. back to you all in the studio. >> our resident expert, tracee wilkins. the national mall is also covered with snow this morning. you could barely see the washington monument beyond the falling snow. how pretty is that? the sidewalks and streets were completely covered. some pple made good use of the fresh snow by coming out and building snowmen. this weather could affect metro riders. metro rail is open and operating on a normal schedule although there are delays on the red line. metro buses, however, a different story. they are only traveling on emergency snow routes, and the

6:41. a live picture of reagan national airport where the temperature is 32 degrees. the snow is gone. there may be just a lingering flurry or passing light snow shower the next hour or so. but otherwise, that's it. storm is over. it left about three to four inches around the metro area. temperatures in the upper 20s to near 30. we have toefr last six hrs seen the storm quickly exit. it's now into southern new england. they're getting lake-effect snow in western pennsylvania. for us later today, partly cloudy with low 40s. tonight freezing back up. watch out for patchy ice tonight and into tomorrow morning.

still a major winter storm will be hitting ous on friday afternoon and evening into midday on saturday we'll take a look at sunday and into next week in ten mississippi minutes. how is the traffic, jerry? >> live look at new york avenue and north capital street. north of this point around michigan avenue, reports of police activity near the washington hospital center. that stretch of new york -- sorry, north capital street, temporarily blocked off. we'll keep a watch on that for you. detours are set up. on the beltway around town, not bad either direction, keep your speeds down. be aware there are still icy patches to deal with this morning. be very, very cautious. more troubles for toyota. drivers are complaining about problems with the breaks on one of its most popular models. why the zoo could be a very popular place to visit today. with the snow on the ground, there are a lot of school closures and delays. we'll update the list next at 6:45. stay with us as the entire area is once again waking up to

now. d.c. schools are open. d.c. schools and all the offices are open. >> the federal government is also open today with an unscheduled leave policy. many schools closed or delayed. in maryland, prince george's county, montgomery county, anne arundel, calvert, charles county schools all closed. frederick county, howard, st. mary's, carroll county and washington county on a two-hour delay. in virginia, ar ling the only county, falls church, fairfax county, alexandria and prince william county schools are closed. manassas city, manassas park city, loudoun county, stafford county and warren county schools are closed. >> clark county, culpepper, frederick, orange and page county schools closed. fauquier, fredricksburg, rappahannock, shenandoah, spotsylvania schools closed. winchester on a two-hour delay. >> in west virginia, berkry,

grant, jefferson county schools, mineral and morgan county schools are all closed. those going to work are wondering if you'll make it on time. in maryland many of the main roads are clear. tracee wilkins continues our live team coverage. she is in largo, maryland. how is it looking out there, tracee? >> reporter: looking really good out here. i think folks should make it to work on time as long as they give themselves some extra time. that's just in case you get stuck behind a salt truck or one of the plows that's still out here. let me tell you, it just looks good. the roads are wet. we're seeing some slush. most of that slush and built-up snow is actually on your side streets. you know, when you get out to the main roads, they look really good. let me show you what it looks like on 202 where we're looking for wet roads all morning long. the same thing on central avenue as we travel in northwest d.c. into largo. the road we're on here. mount luvinchia way has been

plowed a couple times. we're seeing wet slush on the secondary roads. that's what you'll see for most of the areas. again, on 202 in these main roads, they look really good. the best thing about the snowfall is just how beautiful it's left our neighborhoods. so for all the kids out today, this is the beautiful scene that's going to greet you when you leave out of your door this morning. it is so gorgeous. the other good thing about this snow is that it's also a very light and fluffy snow. down here, let me show you, just very powdery. this is sweepable and pushable with the shovel. yorng anybody is going to have to do any real digging and shoveling. it should be very easy for you to get all this cleaned up. i'm tracee wilkins live in largo. back to you in the studio. >> tracee, thank you. from the roads to the skies, the snow could cause delays at the airport this morning. crews spent the night getting ready at reagan national airport. it's still a good idea to check with your airline before heading

out to make sure your flight has not been canceled or delayed. we're following some breaking news out of southeast washington right now. that's where several people are hurt after a fire ripped through an apartment building. it broke out in the 1900 block of nailer road in southeast. it is not clear exactly how many people are haurt or what the extent of their injuries are. we have a crew headed to that scene. we'll bring you the latest as soon as it becomes available. mayor fenty's approval numbers may be down, but his fund-raising totals are not. he raised nearly $3.6 million for his re-election campaign. that would break his own record in 2007 when he raised $3.8 million. his financial report comes days after "the washington post" reported the mayor's approval rating has fallen 30 points to just 42% in the last two years. we are connecting you the mayor. d.c. mayor adrian fenty joins us

live in our studios tomorrow at 6:45. if you have a question, e-mail that question to fenty@nbcwashington.com. we're following a story this morning from iran. state tv say it is country launched another rocket into space. iran says the rocket carried a mouse, turtles and some worms. officials didn't elaborate on the rocket or what research purposes it may have. iran has put two rockets into space over the past two years. western countries are concerned this technology could be used for launching warheads. it's been seven months since michael jackson died. now charges could be imminent in his death. e associated press says prosecutors will file a criminal complaint to charge his doctor, conrad murray, with involuntarily manslaughter. this could give the public an earlier look at the evidence, and if the case were brought before a grand jury. investigators think murray gave jackson a lethal dose of a powerful anesthetic. today aig could be facing

anotr bonus backlash. according to "the washington post" the insurance giant will pay about $100 million in bonuss to day. last year there was a huge outcry when aig gave out bonuses when a taxpayer bailout was keeping the company afloat. aig will use the savings from the smaller bonuses to help pay back the government. there are more troubles for toyota this morning. drivers are now complaining about a brake problem with the prius hybrid. cnbc's courtney reagan joins us live with more on this story. to put it into perspective, 100 complaints, not a ton for the thousands, if not millions of people who drive these cars. >> right. it isn't a ton. it's enough that toyota is looking into the problems. the automaker has received more than a hundred complaints. this time it involves brakes ton prius mod dell.

they reportedly stopped working on bumpy or slippery roads. toyota is sending checks to u.s. dealers regarding the faulty gas pedal situation. dealers are running up additional costs to keep longer hours and make it easier to have repairs done. toyota reported a 16% slide in sales while rivals posted big gains. as more details develop for the prius situation, we'll let you know. >> transportation secretary ray lahood said we're not done yet with toyota. i'm curious if this is what he was referring to. thanks, courtney. today is your last chance to see one of t.c.'s popular atactions. tai shan is leaving for china tomorrow. today, however, is the last day visitors will be allowed to see him. under an agreement with the chinese government, tai shan was only on loan as part of a breeding program. tomorrow he will travel by fedex to beijing along with a 2-year-old female panda from the

atlanta zoo. tom is urging you to get the pictures of the snow and tai shan in the snow, beautiful shot. >> if you have sledding plans, children, now that you a day off, getting the shreding done this morning. a lot of the snow will be gone by this afternoon. there's reagan national airport. there's fog around. not too bad. reagan national temperature near the freezing mark. as we plook at radar, no more precipitation, one little snowshowers in washington county drift together the southeast. for the most part, the snow is gone and left in its wake three to four inches, a few isolated spots had little more than that. thank you, observers and weather watchers for your reports this morning. the trurps in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees all around the region. we will have it warming up quickly. in fact, out of the mountains just above freezing. look at roanoke, 41 there. milder air moving in as we have the cloud cover breaking up.

snowstorm quickly exited three hours ago. still snowing, long island, southern new england, up in pennsylvania that's a lake-effect snow off lake erie. here is the wide view showing a lot of rain developing into south texas. that's an area of low pressure that will be coming up our way and bringing rain into cold air. what does that do? it changes it to snow. that looks like that will happen on friday. between now and then, we'll be seeing some sunshine with highs in the low 40s today. freezing up tonight. we'll have patchy ice around toe night and tomorrow morning with what melts and doesn't vap praet today. tomorrow afternoon into the low 40s, lots of sunshine. then friday does appear we could get a major winter storm developing by the afternoon. friday morning looks okay. we may make it into the mid 30s by noontime. moderate to heavy snow from time to time beginning friday afternoon into friday night and into saturday morning. the snow will taper off by

saturday afternoon. it should stay below freezing once the snow starts and stay below freezing into midweek next week. looks like we may have a low impact storm on tuesday. how is the traffic, jerry? >> doing pretty well this morning. everybody seems to be taking it cautiously as well they should. the beltway, lanes are open to and across the wilson bridge. we had the vehicle fire at st. barnabas road. headed for downtown or out of the district along 395 or the 14th street bridges, just volume. no big hang-ups to report. on the rails we have a new issue, metro rail, there's report of smoke on the line, on the track over at gallery station. now authorities are checking on that. gallery station will create delays on the red line. mark ray, brunswick 87 2 minutes late. 872 is 14 minutes late.

we're following breaking news out of southeast wash-. a fire there. live on the phone with us is pete with d.c. fire and ems. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. around 6:00 we received -- washington, d.c. firefighters received a call there was a fire at 1920 nailer road. this is a three-story apartment building. had a little smoke coming from the second floor. firefighters quickly found that there were some people still in the apartment and that there was a fire in the kitchen. apparently a mother and several children were in the apartment at the. the fire started in the kichb area. the mom went to get some help. the door closed behind her, she was unable to get back into the apartment. firefighters found three children in a back bedroom. they're in critical condition. firefighters removed them. they were treated by ems personnel. we did rescue and remove three children in the apartment. their condition is very

critical. the fire was quickly put out, contained to the kitchen area. the building was evacuated. most important thing is the three children's lives are in the balance right now. >> pete, were there other people in the apartment building that had to be rescued or evacuated? >> no other rescued. the fire was relatively fire, very smoky, but basically confined to the second floor apartment, the kitchen area. again, the mom attempted to go get some help. unfortunately the door locked behind her. the smoke condition got to the kids. no one else was injured. we have evacuated the whole building, portions of the three-story apartment building. again, the fire was quickly brought under control. >> all right, pete per rin jer. tough morning. if you have to head out today, you'll notice the main roads are clear. >> been on the lookout for slick spots. megan mcgrath continues our team coverage from mclean. >> reporter: this is chain bridge road here.
