devastation in chile. one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded shook that country this morning. tonight, the death toll climbs andarts of this country. an arlington sexually assaulted and seriously injured. police think her attacker may have done this before. two planes full of passengers collide on the ground in reagan national. investigators want to know how it happened. good saturday, i'm craig melvin. one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded rocked the country of chile early this morning. it hit 60 miles northeast of the heavily populated city of

concepcion. so far, 214 are dead and the death toll is almost certain to climb. the quake toppled houses, bridges and highways, as well. chile's president declare ed a state of catastrophe. today president obama said the united states is ready to help. >> chile is a close friend and partner of the united states. i reached out to president bachelet to let her know we will be there for her should the chilean people need assistance, and our hearts go out to the families who may have lost loved ones. >> so far chile's leaders have not asked for american aid. at this point several hundred aftershocks have been reported since the quake hit. the chilean ambassador to the united states talked to news4 this afternoon. he was in chile as a child when a larger earthquake struck.

>> event is going to have consequences for many years because it's not only the reconstruction of the infrastructure that is important, indeed it is, but especially the shock that you can imagine that the children, many people there. >> the ambassador says chile's police and government forces have been trained for these kinds of situations. that deadly quake prompted tsunami warnings throughout the pacific. in hawaii, folks moved to higher ground and braced for impact. >> reporter: 6:00 saturday morning, residents awoke to the sound of sirens alerting them to a tsunami. first waves were expected to hit after 11:00 a.m. hawaii time. >> for the state of hawaii, we

are expecting this to be the largest tsunami we had here since 1964. >> reporter: experts say the tsunami could trigger waves eight feet high in some areas. islanders stocked up on supplies and gasoline as they moved inland. the town of hilo expected to get the largest waves. >> i'm worry the my tank is low. >> reporter: as the search began, many watches from higher ground. it appeared the waves weren't as large as officials feared. the tsunami warning was triggered by the massive 8.8 earthquake that struck chile. a tragedy that so far killed at least 200 people. and created a tsunami warning across the pacific ocean from south america to the pacific rim. stephanie stanton, nbc news. a woman abducted, sexually assaulted and dumped miles away from home. tonight arlington police are looking for the guy who did it. they think he may have done something like this before.

police say a gunman approached two women early this morning at a house near wilson boulevard and george mason drive. that's where we find darcy spencer tonight. what do we know? >> reporter: police are saying this woman is lucky to be alive. not only was she sexually assaulted, but was severely beaten. she was driven from this area here in arlington county to a place miles away and basically left f dead. arlington county police say a man abducted two women walking here in the 600 block of north wakefield street this morning. the armed gunman forced them into a home and tied them up. the abductor left the house with one of the victims answer forced her into his vehicle. some point during the ordeal she was sexually assaulted. >> officers immediately saturated the area. we had a lot of assistance from the virginia state police, maryland state police, helicopters and fairfax

helicopters. >> reporter: the two women were walking home from their jobs when approaches from behind by the gunman. the victim forced into the man's car was located about 8:15 this morning west of dale city. she has been beaten and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. >> she was seriously injured and left in prince william county by the suspect. she regained consciousness and made it out to a roadway where she contacted police for help. >> reporter: this is a composite sketch of a suspect in another recent case that could be connected. police say the man robbed a woman at gun point in arlington on february 10th. police say could it be the same gunman who abducted the women this morning. >> a woman was approached after midnight near a vehicle and the dissukt displayed a hand gun. he matched the same description as in this case. she ended up giving him her

purse but wasn't sure if he was trying to take her away from the scene at this time. >> reporter: the victim remains in a local hospital with very serious injuries. anyone who may recognize the person inhat sketch is asked to call arlington county police. darcy spencer, news4. >> thank you. seaworld reopened its orlando park to the public today, but with noticeable changes to its killer whale show. three days ago a veteran trainer drowned when a whale pulled her under in the show. today hundreds packed the theater. seaworld announced no trainers are no longer allowed in the tank with the whales. still ahead tonight, two planes filled with passengers collide on the ground in reagan national. investigators are trying to figure out how it happened. president obama names his new social secretary.

a close call at the tarmac at reagan national this morning. two planes clipped each other while still on the ground. derrick ward is there. >> reporter: for the most part ground movement of airliners are carefully choreographed and goes without a hitch. not on this day. it's 9:30 in the morning. two us airways planes were on

the taxiway at reagan national airport. >> heard a little thud. >> reporter: margaret of alexandria was a passenger on the florida-bound boeing 737. she said it took a while for her and the other 142 passengers to figure out what happened. >> we sat and sat for a while. then we were told there had been this accident and we would have to return to the gate. >> reporter: the 737 apparently suffered enough damage to its stabilizer to prompt airline officials to take the plane out of service. the smaller shuttle had 91 passengers onboard. no one was injured on either aircraft. given the number of planes that land and taxi every day, incidents like this are rare but happen enoug and are dangerous enough to make the most-wanted list, areas where they think there is the most needed room for safety. passengers like margaret are

we are following breaking news in anne arundel county this afternoon. one person died following a small plane crash that happened there at 4:30 this afternoon in edgewater. anne arundel county officials say a small single-engine plane crashed into the yard of a house. at this point we are told no one on the ground was hurt. we have a crew on the scene and will let you know more information as it becomes available. the white house has a new social secretary. juliana smoot was the national finance director for obama's campaign. she will take over for desiree rogers. many criticized rogers for not doing more to prevent the virginia couple crashing the obama's first state dinner. the harvard-educated

businesswoman plans to pursue opportunities in the corporate world. the ongoing mystery surrounding the whereabouts of d.c.'s snow melter may be over. it's been spotted in action. a viewer sent us these pictures of the massive machine. workers were using it to clear snow from a parking lot at 10th and th streets northwest yesterday. today our news4 cameras actually shot this video of the melter at the same lot. the city bought this moon fachir $120,000 back in 2004. it was not used during the record snowstorms. last week city officials told news4 the melter was broken, touch to operate and not worth using again. tonight we are waiting to hear from the city about being spotted. we want to bring meteorologist chuck bell in now. you are saying we may see more of that snow now? >> we will have the possibility of seeing more snow as we get into the tuesday night/wednesday

her crocuses are in bloom. thank you for sending that in. there are a few light, lonely snow showers along interstate 81. winchester, as well. hagerstown might see a little snow flake into western parts of montgomery county. the larger view shows a bit of snow out in the mountains of western virginia, much of eastern ohio. this is all going to be wheeling around. most will dry out as it comes over the mountains. for folks up in the mountains of west virginia, you will get snow showers overnight tonight. plenty of cold air across parts of the ohio valley. that will keep the snow showers going across ohio and west virginia. the main player is that huge area of low pressure across new york. believe it or not, that same storm has been there all week. it's going to do one final insulting lap through parts of the keystone state before it heads out to sea. the results here will be breezy

and cold night. improving weather on the way for late tomorrow afternoon into the day on monday. that area of low pressure moves away. you see the continuation of mountain snows on the western side of the appalachian mountains. for us, just partly cloudy skies for tonight and tomorrow. breezy and chilly. temperatures dropping back down into the mid 30s by 11:00. high 20s through low 30s tomorrow and tomorrow afternoon. highs back into the mid 40s. the all-important seven-day forecast, relatively quiet weather tomorrow and monday. the west-northwesterly winds kick up monday afternoon. tuesday night into wednesday we are watching out. it will be a storm coming up off the carolina coastline. it does need to be watched. obviousl it is still too early to be pinpointing amounts and timing of that. tuesday night, wednesday, an opportunity for more snow. >> an opportunity. chuck bell, thank you so much. in sports, a controversial

first it was snow then a water main break. the maryland terps are in blacksburg where they were supposed to tip-off against virginia tech, but a water main break delayed the game. it will start at 7:00. hoyas had their own malfunction today. georgetown had an advantage because notre dame was without forward luke haringoti. what they did was the start of a second half. tyler came out swinging and set the tone. georgetown falters at verizon center. we begin with this guy. it's never a good place to saw austin freeman. not feeling good.
