walking towards our post. i stood up to greet him. we made eye contact. he looked at me and i looked at him and i knew that something was about to happen. he had a funny look on his face. he drew his weapon, he started shooting at me. i immediately took cover and we all returned fire. >> started coming up, the corner of my eye and i could hear him coming up. i looked up and that's when i saw the gufiring towards the officer. '. >> i saw an individual coming towards me with a weapon in his hand. at this time i pointed my machine gun and fired at him, and then immediately he went down. >> it was unfortunate that it happened, but we did what we had to do. we did our jobs. >> we performed as we were trained. >> were you scared? >> all i could sdo was react. >> what was going through your mind when all this was happening. >> what was going through my mind at the time was just to

park just off of i-70 north of damascus. the area itself is extremely remote with very little traffic. police tell us the victim is a woman, but the body is so decomposed they could not determine her race, age or how she got there. the body was taken to baltimore for an autopsy. >> an entire strip mall in arlington had to be evacuated today because of carbon monoxide. it's left at least three people in serious condition. this mall is on the corner of south 3rd street. several people in a beauty salon complained of feeling sick. three were taken to the hospital. the shop is still closed down, but several others in the mall were reopened. >> and a firefighter was taken to the hospital after battling a blaze in montgomery county this morning. this is in string town road in

clarksburg. firefighters found the fire extending from the second floor into the attic. extra water tanks had to be called in because there weren't any hydrants. everyone in the home dpot out safely. d.c. police have now identified the woman who was struck and killed while she was jogging near the national mall on saturday. now, invesgators think they have found the truck that hit her. news 4 is live in chantilly, virginia with new developments on this story. john? >> that's right. sources are telling news 4 at the victim involved in this deadly hit and run is 51-year-old deborah anne shiebel from northwest d.c. the truck is housed right here behind me at a & a transfer. let's look at the surveillance vio from saturday morning. it happened around 6:00 a.m. on saturday. the dagger crossed over 14th

saturday evening. my client was advised that he would receive a return call which we did this morning. we have today fully cooperated within the police investigation and continue to do so. our driver did not know that any incident had occurred. it is our understanding that no charges areending or are likely to be issued against my clients. it's my understanding the police investigation has determined that our driver went lawfully through the intersection on a green light and that the investigation will otherwise clear my clients of any fault for the incident. again, rerecognize this is a very difficult time for all concerned. >> there you have it, you're hearing from the attorney, from the owner here of a & a transfer saying the driver of the truck did not know he had hit anyone and did not intentionally run away from the scene.

>> a mugging over the weekend just off campus over the weekend. two students were in the parking lot when they were approached by three men. one student was robbed of his cell phone and the other was assaulted. it's the fourth crime alert this semester. churchill high school and potomac, maryland, will hold a community meeting tonight to talk about an os going cheating investigation. school officials tell us they plan to update the community opt investigation and provide information on what security measures are being taken to protect current student data. eight students are accused of stealing teachers' computer passwords and then changing the grades of more than 50 students. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00.

of choice is red wine. erica edwards explains. the water bottle is a workout staple and certainly a good drink for those trying to maintain a slender figure, but according to new research, women may gain less weight over time if they turn that water into whine. >> the amot of alcohol actually experienced smaller weight gain. >> dr. lu wong from boston followed nearly 20,000 healthy middle age and older women. some weight gain was typical over the 13-year study period, but women who started with a normal weight were less likely to gain extra pounds if they drank light to mad roderate to alcohol. that means no more than two to three drinks a day. the link was strongest with red wine. there seems to be something

basically there wasn't any key economic news. what you saw is strength in tech, specifically cisco. there's a big announcement due out tomorrow. that drove cisco shares higher. but within the dow and the s&p 500, you saw weakness in the drug stocks. president obama continues to push health care reform. so those stocks pulled back on that. despite another big sale by aig seing one of its asian life insurance companies for $15.5 billion. that's going to go to repay the government. nevertheless, the s&p 500 and the dow, closing lower today. >> make my head spin. a lot gong on there today. >> there is. >> thanks a lot there. owe. >> here's a sign of the times. a federal job fair at the university of mary washington had to be shut down today after thousands of job seekers flocked to the event. this fair was sponsored by u.s. senator mark warner. and as you

coming to the lamar riggs neighborhoods in northeast washington. construction crews will be repairing the intersection of riggs road and south dakota avenue. the mayor says crews will recon figure traffic by getting rid of the exit ramps and turning them into a traditional four-way intersection. he says there will also be a big effort to help pedestrian traffic in that area, including crosswalks on all sides. the project will cost $10 million. >> a man who led police on a high-speed chase near richmond appeared in court today. 19-year-old glen fusiliet flipped his vanover a guardrail, crashed into a police cruiser. the three children inside the van were in child seats and were not hurt. his attorney filed a motion for a mental hearing today. hoping that he can be evaluated to determine if he's competent to stand trial. he's facing several charges, including attempted murder and he is being held without bond.

toyota is disputing claims that electronics are to blame for the problems with its vehicles. speeding u unexpectedly. toyota hired engineers to test the manmade unintended acceleration. toyota held a demonstration to counter tests and engineering professors claimed that toyota's engines could rev up without a driver pressing the gas pedal. >> we have shown that any circuit can be taken, whether it's for a vehicle and an electric engineering and it can be any other appliance that can be re-engineered and rewired to perform exactly what it is that you wanted it to do. >> the auto maker says it is fixing the recalled vehicles to correct the problems. 8 million vehicles have been recalled recently. >> this guy gets a lot of attention. >> my colleague has signed a

virginia to keep their shoes outside to keep their homes clean. but that changed when door knockers were left to ask people to leave items out for pickup. >> they came through and basically took everything that wasn't nailed down. >> the randos had everything taken including the shoes and the boots. another gentleman there at the salvation army at the warehouse had suggested that he go to manassas to pick up the shoes. >> the shoes were brought here to the family store in manassas, virginia, that's about half an hour drive from reston. >> that particular complex donation as far as shoes are concerned, we have in these two clothe carts here. and this is the whole -- this is the complete amount as far as the complex is concerned. some of the shoes may inadvertently been picked up
