>> announcer: you're watching nshgs "news4 at 6." this is in fact the game we expect to see in several weeks. >> oh, yeah, could be certainly a playoff preview. they're both so good, it could be which in the latter stages of the ploffs. the caps and penguins tonight. the teams don't like each other. pittsburgh has what the caps want, which is the stanley cup, and after tonight, there are only nine regular games in the playoff season. and then lindsay czarniak down at verizon. brooks laich takes a puck to the face. he won't be on the ice tonight. what is the latest on his situation? >> reporter: we were ableo talk to bruce boudreau before ey took the ice, he says the good news is brooks will be able to practice on friday. he did, though, say, it could be possible that brooks would have
6:45 pm
to wear a visor, which i know for a lot of these players, if they don't choose to, can be a bit a pain for them. i know it's killing brooks to not be a part of this game tonight. but as you said, anytime the capitals face the pittsburgh penguins, it's a huge contest. the capitals, though, you could say, have a bit of an edge, they're 3-0-1. the last four times they faced pittsburgh here at verizon center. as these games go, you know, it usually comes down to two players, alex ovechkin and sidney crosby. the last time these t players met, by the way, is when canada beat russia in the 2010 olympics. sidney crosby has had three goals in the games that these two teams have played together, including two the last time they met before the olympic break. but the capitals have won both contests. and ovechkin had the hat trick, that was on super bowl sunday. still, ovechkin says playing the pittsburgh penguins is just
6:46 pm
really a talent. >> it's not a good team. and i think everybody can say this game, going off the fence here, with a lot of attention. >> do you anticipate that game having playoff-like intensity? >> just regular season. but i think it's going to be atmosphere like the playoffs. >> you know, they're a good hockey club and it's a challenge for us to step up and we'll see what happens here. but it's justnother game for us. it's like you said, no more important. >> if i was sitting on the couch and watching this game, i'd be anticipating it greatly because every time ovechkin plays against crosby, it so manies like something special comes out of it. so i don't see why it should be a different today. >> reporter: and bruce boudreau knows the last time it was actually the ovechkin hat trick. i remember he said it, bruce
6:47 pm
saying, he could seeit. and ovechkin had the twinkle in his eye. being here, i can see signs here right now, i don't think there's a greater player with the collective capitals fan base than sidney crosby. you remember last year, they handed out pacifiers. this is always an interesting matchup. they both are tied with 45 goals, ovechkin and crosby on the year. so it should be an intense game for sure. >> tied leading the league with 45 goals. you're going to get just a little bit of the taste tonight of what it's going to be like for playoff hockey. a lot of guys downplaying it. but other guys like mica number saying, this is going to be almost identical to what playoff hockey is going to be, right? >> yeah, because they got to get that mind-set now. this time last year, the team was in a different place. they were still trying to get that chemistry to maybe enter the playoffs.
6:48 pm
now, they are so far beyond the other teams that are still trying to get the playoff spots that they really entered a final ten-game stretch with a lot more confidence than we've seen in years past. they're trying to make sure that the mind-set is with that. and that they're set up ready to go mentally. >> great point there, lindsay czarniak, enjoy the game. fine-tuning by the capitals as they take on their rival penguins. andray blatche has been the best player since they traded away the big number 3. blatche has been terrific. last night, they handed out a press release touts blatche as the most improved player of the year which absolutely makes sense. but how about this for ironics, the same night they're promoting the best players, in a league award, he basically tells his head coach to shove it and quits on the entire team. that according to his head coach flip saunders. however, blatche said that is not the case. this is last night, wizards

hosting charlotte. andray blatche barely broke a sweat because he was benched less than eight minutes in the game by not playing defense. down by three. 15 seconds to go. al bolton drains the 2. in ot, it's all arlotte. jackson cuts to the basket. chandler for the dunk. the wizards fall 95-86, the 12th straight loss. the loss the least of the wizards' worries, though, here is flip on blatche after the game. >> took him out of the game. wanted to talk to him about not getting back on defense. not cross-checking where mike got handled. he didn't want to hear it, don't come and talk, you don't want to be coach, you're not going to play. coaches went up to him three different times said he didn't want to play. 15 years, never seen anything like it, never. i mean he could be -- at me,
6:50 pm
whatever, you never leave your teammates hanging out to dry like that, no matter what. not especially when you lost 11 games in a row and you have a chance to win the game, uncalled for. supposedly your quote/unquote, key player just says he doesn't want to play, i don't care, you can be upset with me. but don't leave your teammates hanging out to dry like that. you don't do that. that's one of the greatest things about the sport. you look to the right. you look to the left. it's being in the tremp he tren the players. right now, those teammates, he's lost their credibility. you know, being in a trench. what's going to happen when things go bad. i mean, you can't do those things. you can't do those things. i'm the most disappointed i've ever been in 15 years with a player. most disappointed. >> an unbelievably strong statement, to put that in perspective. he's coached peoe like latrell
6:51 pm
spreewell who choked his head coach. stephon marbury, and this is the most disappointed he's ever been? >> and he's also coached garnett where he made the point of saying one of the best players in the league for many years. you call garnett over and say, this is what i need you to do, garnett is saying, whatever you nee nee need. andray blatche needs to listen. >> he's only 23 years old. the first word that comes to mind, a punk. he was acting like a punk. but here's this, according to blatche, this is all a big misunderstanding. blatche refused to accept total responsibility for the incident and had a much different version of the story than his coach. here blatche on the phone from indiana where the wizards play tonight.
6:52 pm
>> you know, with the treatment, i heard say something and sat down on the bench. i was frustrated. i didn't want -- you know, i didn't want to make things worse. i just sat down. i sat down for the rest of the game. i didn't come become in. >> what assistant coach is passing the story along that said you didn't want to play? >> i don't know. none of them come and talk to me. he said there were three coaches. i can honestly say none of them came and talked to me. >> he said you left your teammates down. that you let your teammates out to dry. did your teammates say anything to you about that? >> no, how can they? how can he say that when i never said i didn't want to play. if anything, it's the total opposite. >> have you talked to them? >> oh, yeah.
6:53 pm
