i thought by lying i could protect my family, my teammates. i would rather keep friends and teammates than lose everything else. i'm sorry i hurt mr. crittenton's family, the city of washington. what we did was stupid and irresponsible. i'm sorry, again, i put everybody through this. after the sentence we heard from laura govan, arenas' girlfriend. >> we're excited and happy. >> reporter: as arenas walked into court for sentencing today, a little girl tugged at his jacket and asked for an autograph. he took a pen from his lawyer and signed her book bag. this all got started last december when arenas and teammate javaris crittenton got into an argument over a gambling debt. arenas threatened to shoot crittenton in the face and burn his car. arenas brought four guns to the
6:02 pm
wizards locker room at the verizon center. he placed the guns on the chair in front of crittenton's locker with a note that said pick one. as it turned out, crittenton had a gun of his own. the guns were not loaded. no shots fired. arenas claimed this was a misguided practical joke. but the prosecutor wasn't laughing. in january, arenas brought the court where he entered a guilty plea to one felony count of carrying a pistol without a license. after the criminal case became public, arenas was suspended by the nba. all images of the wizards franchise player removed from the verizon center. >> arenas come up court. >> reporter: he was making about $147,000 a game. with the suspension he forfeits more than $7 million of his salary. for his part, javaris crittenton pled guilty to a misdemeanor gun

the organization released this statement a short time ago, we believe today's sentencing of gilbert arenas can help bring closure to the unfortunate situation that played out over the last three months. gilbert admitted his mistakes and will now pay his debt to our community. we are confident that he has learned something significant from the experience and we now look forward to moving on and focusing on building this team into coa contender that our fan deserve. there are a lot of differing opinions on what happened to gilbert arenas today. one member of the media who might be closer than others is washington post columnist mike wise. after the sentencing, hakem dermish caught up with him to get his take on the outcome. >> reporter: i think gilbert arenas polarized the district like nobody else last year, and especially last few months. and i don't know if this is going to be as polarizing, people felt he should have gotten jail time, and other people didn't.
6:05 pm

6:09 pm
>> reporter: the new treaty would still allow u.s. missile defense, like theush era plan to build radars and intercepter missiles in eastern europe, to stop any future nuclear missile launched by iran. keeping that option open for a possible american missile defense system in the future could win key republican votes when this new start treaty comes up here for ratification. live from the hill, i'm steve handelsman, news 4. there is a rescue operation under way off the coast of north korea now. a south korean naval ship is sinking there. there are a lot of questions about what caused that ship to sink and the tense wars around the disputed border area. news reports indicate 58 sailors from the ship had been rescued. but 40thers are still missing. the incident began just a few hours after north korea's military threatened what it called unpredictable strikes against the u.s. and south

6:48 pm
him. >> you tell gilbert arenas you're not interested in having him back and then if that contract does not get voided, you're stuck with gilbert arenas, a player that who knows down deep you didn't want him. i think you have to make the best of a bad situation. and if not build around him, try to move him or otherwise keep him here and mak him pay for what he's created. >> loud down there bit courthouse. let it be noted there are obviously numerous people who think gilbert arenas got off lightly but he has lost between $25 million and $35 million in salary and endorsements this season alone. college basketball now. sweet 16 continues tonight with four games. couple of cinderellas trying to sneak into the elite eight. northern iowa has to get by michigan state.
