the month of march. complete check of the seven-day in a few more minutes. >> feel good about the sun, chuck. thanks a lot, chuck. >> thanks, chuck. gilbert arenas has been spared jail time. the disgraced wizard's star was sentenced on felony gun charges with stem from a locker room confrontation in september. he will have to serve 30 days in a halfway house, two years probation, 400 hours of community service and pay a $5,000 fine to the victim's assistance fund. the team was down in charlotte when they learned his fate. head coach, flip saunders had this to say. >> he didn't need jail time. like i said i think that in the conversation i had with him, i think he is aware he did something very stupid. he is aware there was going to be some kind o consequences. now, he can move forward.

>> the wizards released this statement shortly after the ruling yesterday. it says, quote, we believe today's sentencing of gilbert aye nas ca arenas can bring closure. we are confident he has learned something significant. we look forward to moving on and focusing on building this team into the contender our outstanding fans deserve. in our next half hour, we will tell you how his own words and actions might have kept him out of jail. the bitter debate over health care reform has divided democrats and republicans. the threats against some members of congress over their votes may be helping to bring the parties together. news 4's tom sherwood has more on one virginia democrat's terrible ordeal and the support he has received from his

>> john mccain/sarah palin together again at least for a day. the 2008 gop presidential ticket hit the campaign trail yesterday in tucson to help drum up support for mccain. he is facing another tough re-election battle for aenate seat. many thing palin's star power outshines mccain. that may be one reason why she had just as much speaking power as mccain, himself. >> we need new republicans and new blood and new party officials and those who are willing to stand up and speak out for common sense conservative solutions. we also need statesmen and heroes like john mccain in there to help us get through these challenging times. >> this is the first time mccain and palin appeared on stage together since they lost in the 2008 election. the republican national committee says it will continue its fight to overturn part of the campaign finance law.

mccain, himself helped draft. the rnc bill take its dispute over soft money to the supreme court. they ruled they don't have the authority to overturn a 2003 court ruling on campaign reforms. that upheld a ban on national parties being able to raise unlimited donations from business, union and others. that ban was part of the mccain finegold law. new legislation doesn't target how much they can raise but how they can go about soliciting donations. it is in response that mail other republican groups sent this year. could this be the year the district finally gets a vote in congress? d.c. delicate, eleanor holmes

norton, thinks so. she told wtop radio that democrats need to get the voting right passed while they have a super majority in congress. she isn't giving many details about the state of the bill but she says, we should find out its status in a couple of weeks and she says mayor fendi isn't working with her to get the bill passed. new today, police in the district are searching for the person who killed a man in northeast washington. they say the victim was shot multiple times around 1:00 this morning near the corner of 13th and "w" streets northeast. he was rushed to the hospital and pronounced dead. police have not said whether they have suspects or motives in the killing. the time now is 6:08. you ain't getting away. >> an arrest in a heartbreaking mur. a little girl kidnapped, her body found in a landfill.

12 minutes after the hour. a new development in the case of 7-year-old somer thompson, the florida girl kidnapped after walking home from school. her body found in a landfill. a man whose house she passed every day has been charged with her murder. nbc's michelle meredith report 158 days ago, our community was rocked by the brutal murder of a 7-year-old child. >> reporter: when the sheriff of clay county made the announcement, the room full of a team that made the arrest possible reacted. >> gerald harold has now been formally charged with the murder of somer thompson. >> the sheriff called it a crime

of opportunity. he says on october 19th, harold allegedly made contact with summer as she walked home from school. then, killed her in his house. a house she passed by every day. cause of death, asphyxiation. >> we have evidence that will show that harold assaulted summer and killed her and dumped her body in a dumpster which ultimately ended up in a landfill in georgia. >> reporter: what's their case against harold? evidence law enforcement found in his house, dna and even admissions from harold himself. >> so i would like to take this opportunity to say to jared harold, we got you and you ain't getting away. >> reporter: in a separate news conference, summer's mother did not hold back. at one point, summer's aunt was so overwhelmed she fainted. summer's mother paused and explained how she will tell her children. >> i am just going to tell them that the monster is caught and locked up and he will never get

out. >> that was michelle meredith reporting. bee sides premedicated murder, the other charges are lewd and lascivious and sexual battery. the case qualifies for the death penalty. it all started early yesterday morning in the parking lot of a restaurant in manassas. police say they were responding to reports of a fight when the officers say an suv sped out of the parking lot. after almost crashing into a police car, investigators say the driver led officers on a high-speed chase. they say they chased the driver back to the restaurant where he tried to crash into another officer. police say the driver eventually crashed again andas arrested. he is identified as 28-year-old dwight lawton, who is now facing a number of charges. his passenger, 25-year-oldario hogan, was also arrested. 6:14 on this saturday

down to exactly 32 degrees on one occasion. we have never had a march that failed to get below 32. so it is an interesting little factoid. we have not been below 32 degrees yet this month and this month is nearly over. outside on your saturday morning, the skies are clear. the winds have stayed up overnight. as a result, our temperatures, while not below freezing are certainly plenty cold. current temperature at reagan national, clear skies, 33 degrees. the real hitch in this giddy up, though, is the fact that the north wind is blowing at 10-15 miles an hour putting windchills here at the beginning of the cherry blossom festival down into the mid-20's. 33, our current temperature. wind north at 12. windchill, 26. coldest temperature so far this month, 33 degrees on the 6th and 33 on the 27th. temperatures out in neighborhoods that are not reagan national airport, we have 32 degrees and falls church, 28,

nassas and 30, winchester, 38, martinsburg. look at how far down the cold airas made it this morning. sub freezing temperatures as far as western north carolina and parts of north central tennessee this morning, even up into new york city and boston. here is a look at the satellite review. over the last 12 hours, clouds and rain showers late yesterday morning into early yesterday afternoon are now long gone. the western edge of the clouds is still way off. as a result, we will start the day with perfectly clear skies. you will probably be able to see a few clouds off to the extreme east. by and large, a beauty of a day today. high pressure in charge. it will be plenty chilly. with all the sunshine, it will be relatively pleasant if you stand out of the breeze and in the direct sunlight. rain chances are going to start to climb as we go through tomorrow. high pressure will protect us for "today." as it moves away, we will pick up that east to northeasterly

hey there, kimberly and erin. good morning both of you. a good saturday morning. off to a very chilly start today. so far, our coldest morning of the month of march outside. temperatures hovering barely above the freezing mark at national airport. under a mostly clear sky. looking out to the east. the sky is starting to brighten a little. 33 downtown, 32 degrees in south ryan virginia. 28 degrees, andrews air force base. 31 degrees, downtown baltimore. bright and sunny. very chilly. only 50 degrees for a high today. anything you want to do associated with the beginning of the national cherry blossom festival, bundle up, stay in the sunshine and out of the breeze. you'll be all right. the smithsonian kite flying festival is today. good weather for anything you want to do outside. bundle up a little. >> thank you, chuck. it is official. gilbert arenas will not do any

jail time. the wizards star was sentenced on felony gun charges which stem from a locr room confrontation in december. here is a look at how his sentence breaks down. 30 days, halfway house, two years probation and 400 hours of community service. he must also pay a $5,000 fine to the victims assistance fund. news 4's jackie bensen reports on what may have kept him out of jail. >> reporter: gilbert arenas can be assigned to serve his 30-day sentence at a halfway house in the district or in virginia where he lives. neither arenas nor his defense attorney spoke to reporters as they left through the rear exit of the courthouse. his fiancee attended the hearing. >> we are really excited and happy. thank you. >> the sentence capped months of drama. he pled guilt to bringing four unloaded guns into the wizards locker room at the verizon center on december 21st. he said it was to play a joke on javaris crittenton. he was charged with a felony

after he made what investigators considered to be conflicting statements. one kept him out of jail after prosecutors strongly urged incarceration. his own words may have helped him. he told the judge i'm very sorry all this happened. every day, i wake up and wish it didn't. i thought by lying about it, i would protect my family and teammates. i would rather keep a friend and teammate and lose everything else. i'm sorry i hurt mr. crittenton's family, the city of washington. what we did was stupid and irresponsible. i am sorry again i put everybody through this. >> another factor in the judge's decision is visible here on the once dilapidated basketball court. those top of the line hoops, nets and back boards, gilbert arenas. the flawless court surface, gilbert arenas, just part of what he has done here. >> a lot of guys with that stardom and that money from this

town has been in the league hasn't done the things that he has done in the community. >> the brady campaign to prevent gun violence issued a statement saying they felt jail time would have been a more appropriate sentence given that this is gilbert arenas' second gun offense. jackie bensen, "news4 today." a horrific crash has left three teens in the hospital. one of them in critical condition. it happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon on lord's landing road in upper marlboro. the car ended up between a fence and a tree. it is still unclear what caused the crash. how did a pair of paramedics in prince george's county declare a man dead who was actually alive. that's what investigators want to know? darcy spencer has nor from largo, maryland. >> reporter: sources tell news 4, the action of two career paramedics are under review after a severely ill man was incorrectly declared dead inside

his en arden home. authorities say paramedics were called here to glen arden parkway by the glen arden police department to assist in a possible death investigation around noon. a prince george's county fire department says a paramedic unit arrived on location at a residence in the 8600 block of glen arden parkway within four minutes and concurred that the adult male was deceased. at about 1:30 p.m., an official from the county police department forensic services summoned the fire ems department to return to the scene as the adult male was displaying signs he was alive. a medic from a different station responded to the home to transport the man to the hospital. officials say that man is alive and receiving treatment. neighbors say the man lives by himself and had not been seen for at least a few days. a maintenance worker discovered him unresponsive after he went into the house to check on him. fire officials say the paramedics have been placed on a lited public contact status.

new today, another vehicle recall. general motors is recalling 5,000 heavy duty chevrolet express and gmc savanna vans. a faulty alternator is the reason. they have halted sales and production. owners of the recalled vans built in february and march are urged to stop driving them and park them outside away from buildings and other vehicles. the auto make certificar says t within no injuries. the maryland bill that requires ignition locksor first-time drunk driving offenders. maryland land senators voted in support of the law. drunk drivers would have to blow into the device. if the driver's breath alcohol content is about a set limit, the car will not start. the device is required for six

months and the driver foots the bill. the bill now moves to the house. governor martin o'malley says he would sign that bill. >> the "hurt locker," winner of best picture, brought the real life drama men and women of the armed forces face every day to the screen, many never escape when they return home. thousands of men and women coming homer having ptsd. a condition that researchers say may have physical as well as mental effects. >> we were rolling down this road getting ready to turn when our vehicle just went boom. that's kind of all i remember. >> reporter: steven edwards left the battlefield in iraq five years ago with the horrors of war never left him. >> ten or more and my heart starts racing, i start sweating. i feel like i can't catch my breath. >> like so many veterans who saw combat, edwards has

post-traumatic stress disorder. the va says, out of 100 veterans from iraq and afghanistan, 11-20 of them have ptsd. it is considered a mental health issue but researchers at the v.a. and ucsf say they have located a physical change in the brain caused by ptfd. part of the brain gets smaller. >> we found in people that had smaller areas that are associated with the regeneration of neurons. >> reporter: dr. norbert shoe says a physical indicator will make diagnosis faster and lay lead to more effective treatment. >> that demonstrates it's a disease, not something that people mentally have in their brains. >> reporter: any advancements will benefit troops. many have to fight for treatment. >> he has been shot. he has been blown up, wounded. he has got a purple heart to show that. this could relate to his ptsd. still going through the process.

that time of year the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. today, the national cherry blossom festil starts to kick off. peak blooms will happen thursday, april 5th and run throh next sunday, april 4th. you can catch beautiful sights this weekend. there is limited parking on haines point. ohio drive will also be one way for the next two weeks.

all four lanes are going to be northbound only. if you are used to coming down to the jefferson memorial or going on to haynes point from the lincoln memorial and hugging the banks of the river on ohio drive, you can't do it. >> for a list of events going on at the festival, check out our home page, nbcwashington.com. most of the festival events are free including a parade down constitution avenue on april 10th. >> it has been a really satisfying week for fairfax county police officer and his canine partner, because they are life-savers. they teamed up to save a woman missing and suffering from hypothermia. this started monday when rangers found abandoned vehicle at mason state park. they began searching the trails and late wednesday night, schnoz, the dog, located the woman. julie carey has our report. >> reporter: this is one loveable face, unless the person looking back is a suspect that just got sniffed off. the aptly-named schnoz has found

some bad guys lately. this week, he saved a life. the harness is the first signal he is about to get busy. >> he knows we are going to work. usually, what we would do is present him with some article we collected at the scene, let him get a smell of it. >> reporter: that's what happened wednesday night at mason neck state park. range jirs found abandoned car near this restroom and for two days had searched for his owner. they tracked down her family, got an article of clothing and schnoz went to work. >> he worked on a trail head, about 100 yards. he took off into the wood line. it wasn't long before schnoz found what he was looking for, the mentally disabled 53-year-old missing woman. >> she was at the base of a tree covered in leaves. with the temperatures and her condition when we saw her, i don't know if she would have made it another night or two out there. >> not all of schnoz' work is done in the deepwoods. a few weeks ago, he tracked it

from a car jacked taxi to the suspect's front door. >> there is a pay off for schnoz when he completes a search. he gets to i.d. the person he has found by doing this and then he gets a treat. >> reporter: schnoz and his sister, cody, are the only two bloodhounds on the team. schnoz is the second generation. >> a great asset. they have proved it over and over again how valuable they are as part of our overall canine unit. >> reporter: especially the days he gets his man or like this week makes a rescue. >> its a fantastic feeling. it is great to take their innate ability to hunt animals and turn it into hunting humans and locating people and hopefully saving some lives and catching some bad men. it is the most rewarding feeling you can, i think, get in this line of business. >> reporter: julie carey, news

plenty of chill in the air. later on today with all that sunshine, temperatures will warm up a bit, into the high 40s to near 50 degrees. at least it will be 100% sunshine today. yesterday's clouds and rain showers have moved offshore. we will be under the influence of high pressure today. bright and relatively nice, whether you are going to be flying your kite with the smithsonian national kite festival or going outside to look at all of our beautiful cherry trees. a great stretch of cherry trees along haynes point there going south. for tomorrow, clouds come bac into the forecast fairly quickly. any time after 2:00 or 3:00 tomorrow afternoon, rain almost on our western door steps. it will rain most of sunday night and through the day monday and showery weather will linger tuesday. if you have your favorite kite, go on down to the national mall.

gilbert arenas has learned his fate. >> he is not heading to jail. his future with the wizards is still unclear. here is dan hele with sports. good morning, everybody. gilbert gets off relatively unscathed. the wizards superstar avoids jail time completely. he will spend 30 days in a halfway house and two years on probation. the question now, how do the wizards continue and what role will arenas play in the future of the franchise? arenas is still owed more than $80 million and is almost untradeable. we did ask a couple of writers who know gil pretty well what their take was. we start with washington post columnist mark wise who has talked with gilbert extensively over the years. >> i think a lot of people are going to be disappointed because gilbert has polar rooized this time, not just on the basketball court but over this incident. a lot of people feel like this

is a guy who has given his free time to this community to better a lot of people. why is he being treated like a men nas to society? others are going to feel like, if i had brought my guns into the district and done what gilbert did, i would be in jail. i don't know if there is a right or wrong answer. i do know that gilbert arenas, and once again, all the decisions around him, polarized d.c. >> if he was that guy in 2007 making our team dynamic, that talent level with a lot of maturity, yes. we haven't seen that guy since 2007. we need to see a gilbert arenas who was a team guy, a team first guy, who was not going to break off plays because he wants to shoot three-pointers, who is going to defer to his other teammates and get them involved and give you effort on defense. all of those things he has not done the last two years, that's what the wizards are seeing if you can give any preteeo building a team around this guy. >> nba analyst, david aldridge.
