captions paid for by nbc-universal television and welcome to "today" on this saturday morning. i'm amy robach. >> and i'm carl quintanilla. >> thank you for bringing the nice weather here and what a nice, i guess, day for folks to wait outside on that line outside of the apple store. >> we have that picture there at the top, it's going to be an interesting new toy. > we have a lot to tell you about this morning, beginning with the all important issue of jobs. >> the country added jobs last month at the fastest pace in three years. president obama said we're beginning to turn the corner. we're going to rome where a vatican priest made a highly provocative statement over the

growing sex abuse scandal. as amy mentioned, why are all these people lined up this morning waiting for the doors to open at the apple store? you guessed it, it's the release of the ipad. and we have got one here to show off and tell you if it's worst your money. and a homecoming one soldier, his family and the rest will not forget. believe he had been gone for six months. >> and he flew in just minutes before his son came off the ice. he'll tell us what it was like on that flight trying to get back for that. but first the latest on the jobs number. 162,000 jobs were added last month keeping the unemployment rate at a steady rate. chuck todd reports. >> reporter: that was president obama in charlotte friday touting the first truly positive jobs report.

>> we have come along way. we still have a ways to go. economic statistics don't do justice to the pain and anxiety that results from unemployment. >> reporter: and the president's chief economist also provided a reality check. >> we have lost more than 8 million jobs. so it's going to take a lot more than just one month to fill in that hole. >> reporter: the unemployment rate among african-americans nearly increased last month, nearly a full percentage point to 16.5%. for hispanics, the number is also in double digits, 12.6%. and most distressing, long-term unemployment went up not down. the percentage of americans out of work for six months or longer make up a staggering 6.4% of the

jobless. michelle rankin has been out of work for nearly two years. >> i'll taking anything. >> the numbers were a bit more than we were expecting, about 150,000. however we were expecting a bigger boost from the census jobs and that was not the case. a lot of it came from private employment which is there's nothing bad about it. >> reporter: the president was an optimist. >> what we can see here is that the worst of the storm is over, the brighter days are still ahead. >> for more on the new jobs numbers we're joined by cnbc senior economic reporter steve liesman. 162,000 jobs created last month, that's the largest gain in three years, how strong are these numbers? >> they're strong but not strong enough. that's a way to put it in context. 8 million americans out of work.

there's 100,000 people entering the workforce just from population growth every month. that's the minimum we have to do. in terms of making a dent in the unemployment, we have to do 200,000, 300,000, even 400,000 a month. and the economy has done that coming out of a recession. so we have to look for in the months ahead is a big job growth that will put a chunk of those unemployeded back to work. >> are there any signs that these new numbers may be pushing things in the right direction? >> first of all the long-term unemployed problem is one of the most pernicious parts in this downterm in unemployment, we have people that are 28 weeks along, which is a huge number. and it was harder for a pern to find a job in march than it has ever been. the odds of getting a job are

lower than since 1948. what economists tend to believe is that these things have a lot of mo in them, momentum. we're losing jobs month after month until they stabilize and when they come back, they come back month after month. a lot of economists are saying this is the beginning of a sustainable recoverry here. the trouble of the longer term unemployed is a separate problem. >> in terms of what jobs are available, did we see certain types of jobs decline, certain types of jobs grow? >> the thing that jumped off the page to me on the report was manufacturing and construction jobs. you can imagine the construction industry was one of the hardest hit. month after month, it got to the point where how could we actually lose anymore manufacturing jobs, as if we had lost them all. some of the auto companies are putting them back to work. we lost some jobs on wall street in financial services, but

overall, the job growth was widespread across industries, that was one of the signs that suggested there's really some strength out there on the job market. >> we'll end on that positive note. >> there's reason to smile on this report. let's head over to the news desk where peter alexander has the headlines. we begin in iraq where gunmen have killed at least 25 people including fife women in raids overnight. this happened in a sunni village south of baghdad. officials say many of the victims were so-called sons of iraq, that's former insurgents that later teamed up with al qaeda members. letters from -- resign within three days or face removal from office. the letters come from the group the guardians of the free republic. they do not threaten violence and so far none arrests have been made. rhode island has been declared a federal disaster area

after the worst flooding in 200 years. in the midwest, severe thunderstorms ripped through kansas and oklahoma, flattening homes and trees. and in the pacific northwest snow is still blanketing parts of oregon and washington state. authorities in ft. worth, texas are searching for two arsonists caught on surveillance tape starting fire to a building. the -- setting the fire and then simply taking off. three firefighters were hurt. look at that video. there is still no word so far on a motive. and file this one under what not to do when making a movie. a british newspaper "the sun" obtained a script. someone apparently picked up the script from a bar. the script contained some major changes from the book by j.k.

been an unusual and provocative defense of the pope in the growing sexual abuse scandal. nbc's anne thompson is in rome this morning with more. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, amy t vatican finds itself under growing criticism and this time it's coming from other religious leaders, the archbishop -- and st. peaint peter's basilica las night. pope benedict leading the way of the cross. the event at the heart of christianity. jesus dying for the sins of man. but the outcries of the sins of some priests continued this friday, priests who allegedly abused children and those who covered it up, perhaps even the pope.

those accusations brought -- at the good friday service he compared the attacks on benedict to the persecution of the jews. >> translator: i know from experience what it means to be victims of collective violence and also because of this they are quick to recognize recurring symptoms. >> reporter: those are the thoughts of the preacher and not the pope, words that angered jewish leaders around the world. the words stood out from the collective mea culpas in the churches. a special prayer was offered for abuse victims. in vatican city, catholics waited in line to attend the serve. >> i think the pope could be more pro active and send a stronger message about how the church can make retribution for the abuses that happened. ♪ i know your hearts are torn

deemed not to be at risk to abuse again. and now here's carl. >> amy, thanks. now to the politics and fundraising scandal that has embarrassed the republican party and it's leader michael steele. >> reporter: the republican party entertaining donors at a west hollywood bondage themed sex club and mailing a fundraising letter with the wrong number allegedly directing people to a phone sex hot line. too late for social conservative tony perkins, he's telling followers to stop giving money to the rnc. >> the rnc is tone deaf to the concerns of so many social conservatives to whom they look to for financial support. >> reporter: it's only the latest embarrassment from michael steele, the embattled gop chairman, widely criticized as a big spender, wild fodder

governor's directly to candidates. for "today" andrea mitchell, nbc news, washington. >> if conservatives and republicans are so upset with michael steele, why not just oust him? >> well, look, the chairman of the national party committee first of all isn't that important a job and i think the turbulence that you would both engender and also portray to the rest of the country about your party simply would been worth it. add that the fact that he is the first african-american chairman of the republican national committee, i think it's just not worth the trouble for republicans. in the end, their opportunity in the campaign in 2010 is going to come down to the broader political environment and the efforts of individual candidates and those party cmittees at the house and senate and gubernatorial level. >> i want to walk through some

of these expenditures. $17,000 on private jet, $13,000 on limos, $30,000 on upscale hotels. are those out of whack to what the normally spent? >> taken each by themselves, they might not be out of whack, but you put it all together, you also put it together with the lack of discipline that steel has shown in various ways, both in things he has said in interviews, also the book controversy. now times when you have a high functioning republican chairman, like haley barber in 1994, it can make a difference. that's what republicans have to

hope is that their success or failure in this election year is going to come down to those candidates and congressional leaders rather than the republican national committee. >> the president down in north carolina talking about the jobs numbers that amy and steve were talking about earlier, how much of a confidence boost is that to the white house? >> big. and it's true, economists will agree as the president said that the committee is turning a corner, the problem for democrats is that it's turning that corner very slowly. unemployment remains at 9.7, it's likely to stay that way all the way through election day, that's very scary for a party that's in party, but what the president is trying to do and democratic candidates are trying to do is put together four, five, six, seven months of job growth. then you can begin to make the argument that our policies are beginning to take root, beginning to work, stick with us, that's how the democrats

hope to mitigate the losses they're going to suffer in november. they're going to lose seats in any circumstance in both the house and the senate, the question is how many. >> the president's trip was also to maine this time pushing health care reform. does he need to get the public on board with health care before he turns to jobs or does he have to do both at the same time? >> the public doesn't necessarily know what's in the bill so part of what the administration is trying to do is fill in the blanks and say did you know that we got rid of the doughnut hole for seniors, did you realize that your kids can stay on your health insurance policy until age 26, do you realize that we have ruled out preexisting conditions for kids? all of those are things that democrats can talk up to average voters, this is what we have done for you, but until this law

is implemented, until we have some experience with the law, it's going to be hard to move public opinion, the president made the comment in maine the other day, also in north carolina that this is like planting seeds and you got to wait for them to grow. it's going to be a while before we know whether the public is truly going to accept this law. >> and now here's amy. for travelers, there is yet another change in airline security to be aware of. it's a tough new approach to screening passengers heading to this country from overseas. pete williams has the details. >> reporter: administration officials say the failed plot to bomb a plane to detroit on christmas day by a man with explosives hidden in his underwear actually provided a needed jolt to shake up airline security. and now the government is making a big change to a system started just three months ago to evaluate who should be pulled aside at airports overseas for secondary screening, including

pat downs and interviews or inspection in one of the full body image scanners. >> it is a more intel or information based way to screen, it is a stronger way to determine whether passengers should go through secondary examination and not just primary examination. >> reporter: gone are the practices of screening anyone coming from known terrorist countries, instead screeners overseas will be focusing on other indicators, such as parable names, travel patterns or physical descriptions, anything that's derived from current threat intelligence, and they'll continue to look for obvious factors. a former homeland security official says it's a good idea but has some potential drawbacks. >> we'll be conveying intelligence to these screeners and that means leaks so we're

them up and putting them up for sale. nationally flipped homes gained 19% in 2009, 197,000 were also flipped in that same year. is flipping on the rise and is it a good idea. >> i think flipping is definitely on the rise and i think that that's reflective of the fact that the real estate market is recovering. real estate data is relate troe speckively analyzed and because of that, we're not always in real-time and don't always get a clear picture of what's happening right now. i think the market's pretty hot, mostly based on the fact that there's a tax credit, we are seeing still historically low mortgage rates and in a lot of places inventory is very low. >> so flipping is making a come back in some of the areas that were hardest hit by the housing market woes, what areas are we seeing a lot of flipping going

on? >> i think places where you see a lot of foreclosed properties, places like las vegas, phoenix, most of california and most of florida and besides people looking for principal residents, areas like phoenix are attracting canadian buyers who are looking for vacation homes and in florida, lots of european buyers looking for the same thing. >> in 2000 to 2005 it seems like everybody was flipping homes and that's what people say got us into part of this mess at the very least. is it a concern at all that we're seeing people flood into that area once again, could it cause more problems? >> i'll be honest with you, i think that you're exactly right, that's what happened? 2005, i do see a place for flipping in the market right now that can actually help us recover. but flipping is not for the feint and heart and not for an amateur.

perspective, obviously now you're counseling some people who are suffering from this. you yourself were a drug addict, a sex addict. how do you think sexual addiction compares to other addictions people are familiar with? >> the severity of it is just as crucial. and i feel that now it's being brought to the surface, unfortunately a lot of people are being hurt in the process of it and families are being ruined, but a lot of people do suffer from sex addiction, and a lot of people use it as a cross addiction as well if you suffer from drug and alcohol addiction too, not all the time, but sometimes you do. >> obviously tiger woods, jesse james may be a sex addict who's seeking help as well. a lot of people see these high profile cases and say give a break, this guy's cheating on his wife and he's using this to say it's not my fault, it's adiction. what do you say to those people?

>> people have the right to say that, because dave letterman came out about other things as well. but i just hope that it doesn't start going that way, because hollywood has a tendency of blaming certain ways that they act on addictions, however, you know, the addiction is a serious thing, as drew just said in that piece, when alcohol's anonymous first came out, people were like what are you talking about? there's nothing wrong with drinking and stuff like that. 's people not being aware of what's going on and the ignorance to it but it's just because they haven't been educated yet. it's time to educate people and there are true people out there that need help. >> i heard someone say come on, if sex addiction was really something that these people were suffering from, their wives should have been the first people to know about it. >> i don't think so at all. >> i you're addicted to sex, don't you want to have sex with

your wife all the time? >> the art of lying, you become a fantastic liar. >> and you're a liar, a cheat, and a thief and the manipulation that goes on with it. >> what's the rehab process like? a lot of people look at these particular rehab clinics and they kind of look like resorts and they don't like like there that much hard work. >> i went for five-day detox and stayed 9 1/2 months. it was brutal. i went in and as i call it they peeled the onion, i was in group, i was in therapy, i was with doctors all the time. i had to uncover, discover and discard. and there was a lot of stuff hiding behind my alcoholism or drug addiction and then i found out i couldn't act out sexually. a lot of times we go out and use because of finance and romance. so i had to go through a very extensive process. >> given the technology we have, we're seeing a lot of these racy e-mails come out, there's a new

term called chexting. >> i think technology has a big -- in a whole towards relationships as well. because back in the old days, we think about these great marriages with grand parents and all this stuff, they didn't have the internet, and they didn't have texting and all this stuff. but i think that is this is going to be a start of many people that are going to get busted, if you will. because people are paying people for a story. as long as there's money out there to be made, someone's going to come out and start busting. >> what's life like as a recovering sex addict. >> i have to tell you, for me, being in recovery is the greatest thing. my best day in recovery -- my worst day in recovery -- i would never change that for the worst day out there using. >> my life is completely different. i'm in a relationship that's very solid. everything that i had to deal

you want to put a frame around it. it serves a practical purpose, it keeps the grass from growing into the bed, it keeps the soil you've amended from leaving, and when you're swe ee're weeding o it's a barrier so it doesn't damage the plants. these are just pave stone edgers. this is like a minicedar fence. so once it's in the ground, it looks like you've done a lot more work than you actually have. these are little wooden peg ends but it comes in a long chain, so it saves you a lot of time. this is actually called ultraedge, it's like composite, but it's a wood composite. so you just roll it out and put it in the ground. one of the most popular ways to do this is bricks because it goes with a lot of different styles of homes and because they're easy to work with.

you can put them flat on the ground. but the first thing you want to do is dig a small trench so the weeds don't grow back so easily. it's nice to put a little layer of sand, and if you get these crooked, you can come back later and level them out. a lot of folks like to do just a staggered pattern like this, from the street it looks really, really nice, easy to do. and instead of doing it o the thin edge you want to do it on the long edge, it just makes them more sturdy. and the trench keeps them in place. >> how about mulch? and what time of year is best? >> after you have planted things and watered them you want to put the mulch done. the mulch makes a statement because it comes in so many different styles and colors. it's going to keep in the
