which will be on the increase throughout the afternoon that will warm us up well into the 70s. by noontime, around 70. afternoon temperatures should top off in the mid 70s to upper 70s in some of the warm spots and we'll remain dry throughout the day. anywhere from the mid to upper 70s expected. maybe slightly cooler along area waters. winds switching out of the west, so no bay breezes to keep us on the cool side. another day of above-average temperature, and that will be the trend throughout the week. back to you. >> can't wait to hear that. thanks. >> we are following breaking news from wheaton this morning. that's where a police officer was killed when his car ran off the road. the crash happened early this morning on randolph road. derrick ward has more details from the accident scene.

what a tragic loss this easter monday. >> reporter: indeed it was. there's more now in the way of details. you are look east down randolph road. this is the scene of that crash that occurred before dawn this morning. montgomery county police brought in the park police helicopter, flew over the scene, one of the investigators on board, so they could get an ariel view of the crash scene. it happened as several officers were responding to a call for assistance from another officer. they were on the scene of a fight involving several people. the road takes a slight bend and there's a downgrade, it don't seem particularly hard to navigate, but that makes this even harder to determine what happened. we have more from captain paul stark

starks. >> it happened about 2:21 this morning. the officers were responding to a fight call that involved a large number of people. one of the officers who was responding was traveling westbound on randolph road. as he approached denly road and randolph road, his vehicle left the roadway, struck a tree. he was severely injured and taken to holy cross hospital where he succumbed to his injured. >> reporter: there were several officers responding to this call. other officers responding to the scene called this in, he was take bin ambulance from here and pronounced dead at holy cross hospital. the officers in this district are shaken by this. in fact, they were given the rest of the shift off so they could go to the hospital to deal with the grief. officers were brought in from other districts to cover for them. the investigation continues into this crash. the identity of the officer is

not released, we are told, however, is he a seven-year veteran of the force. back to you. >> thank you very much. on tuesday, family and friend also pay last respects to a teen killed in the mass shooting in southeast washington. tavon nelson was just 17 years old when he died. h nine people were shot last tuesday night, four, including nelson were killed. police charged three people in those shootings. they are looking for a fourth suspect. today is easter sunday, the holiest day on the christian calendar. people are celebrating around the world and right here in the d.c. area. thousands of people attended a sunrise service at the lincoln memorial this morning. here's a live look from the city camera. the service was organized by capital church in vienna, an interdenominational

>> reporter: good morning. your sports minute on this easter sunday begins with the final four and the national championship is set. duke against west virginia last night for the chance to advance. the blue devils downed the mountaineers, 78-57 thanks in pa to john shier. he scored 23 points. duke will go for its fourth national championship in school history. duke will meet underdobutler on monday night. the hometown bulldogs beat michigan state 52-50. sophomore gordon heyward led the way scoring 19 points. butler wins its 25th straight game and will appear in the ncaa title game for the first time in school history. on the ice, capitals in columbus. alexander semin scored his 38th goal of the season, the caps win it 3-2 setting a franchise record with their 51st victory. in baseball, the nationals wrapped up spring training against the red sox yesterday. kevin youkilis hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the sox never looked back. the nats fall 6-1. opening day is monday against the phillies. that's your sports minute. him hakem dermish. have a happy easter. >> thank you.

well, with you now know wizards guard gilbert arenas will serve his time at a halfway house in montgomery county. he pleaded guilty back in january to possessing a gun without a license. a judge sentenced him to 400 hours of community service and 30 days in a halfway house. arenas will serve his time at the montgomery county pre-release center, it's a minimum secure facility which allows residents to leave for work or community service. arenas' arrival date has not been released for security reasons. but it is expected to happen soon. new this morning, keep an eye on your bank account if you use the atm at congressional plaza in montgomery county. police say they founa device on a wachovia bank atm in the 1600 block of rockville pike in rockville. an alert citizen saw some sort of skimming device saturday night. police are trying to figure out what that device is the bank has been notified. if you used at atm, check for strange activity on your account. >> the time is 9:08.

>> reporter: visitors say the metro stations were packed as well, so many tourists heading to the mall and other destinations. some were inconvenienced when a bomb threat and suspicious package closed the pentagon city metro station for two hours. but for most people, the difficulty in getting here was worth the trouble to see the blossoms in pink bloom. >> it was very romantic. the trees -- and you're sitting on the green lawn, too many people. i would have preferred to be a little more alone. >> reporter: what did you think of washington today with all of the people? >> a little too much. a little crowded. >> reporter: the cherry blossom festival has been excellent for tourism. some tourists tell us they got some great package deals to stay at area hotels for the weekend. at the tidal basin, darcy spencer, new4 today. the nice thing about the festival, the weather has been so great, every day, tons of people because you don't have to worry about it.

dissipated. now just mainly sunny skies. light breeze out of the northeast, 3 miles per hour. if you remember last year, easter sunday, much cooler. we had a high temperature of 54 degrees. again, with that sun, it's already warming most areas up to the mid 60s, just off to the south and west, fairfax county, fauquier county, just to the north as well. montgomery county, in the low 60s. similar conditions over in prince george's county as well. down in southern maryland, no influence of the bay now. enough of an off-shore wind keeping temperatures there on the mild side at 63. live look at doppler radar. no problems. we had a cold front come through about an hour or two ago didn't notice a whole lot of change to the weather, did bring clouds in. they have diminished. lots of warm air situated over the eastern u.s. and even behind the cold front, temperatures really don't drop off. over the past 12, 24 hours, we

had a decent amount of clouds come through, now a few scattered clouds as that front is crossing the viewing area. behind it, not much of a change in the air mass. it will continue to eat up more as we head into tuesday and wednesday. if you are a fan of summer-like weather, you will enjoy this forecast coming up. high pressure situated off the east coast continuing to dominate our weather through today and tomorrow. a little weak disturbance will try to come through the jet stream monday night bringing clouds. future cast shows a few showers, possibly in the mountains. most areas should be dry. tuesday remaining sunny again. for your easter sunday, again, there's a few clouds going on currently, but that will give way to mostly sunny skies. 73 to 78 for the high temperatures. your monday forecast, mix of sun and clouds, 78. opening day for the nationals against the philadelphia phillies at 1:00, tuesday and wednesday, low 80s, possibly mid 80s in the warm spots.

2010. the news is ahead, first a quick check of the forecast. justin drabick is here with a look at that. already warming up there. >> temperatures will soar back to the mid and upper 70s today. unlike yesterday when we were dealing with low clouds and fog, today a didn't story, plenty of sunshine to go around. a quick warm-up and then the mercury will climb on the thermometers. widespread low to mid 60s. heading into noontime, we should be around 70 degrees. a few scattered clouds around. those will thin out as we had a dry cold front swing through. 70s around the washington area. areas to the south and west will make it back to the upper 70s. conditions even warm up more heading through the upcoming week as we break 80 degrees. all those details coming up. >> thanks. >> sure.

following breaking news from wheaton this morning, that's where a police officer was killed when his car ran off the road. the crash happened on randolph road. news 4's derrick ward is live at the accident scene. good morning. >> reporter: investigators remain on the scene of this accident. we are in the 3000 block of randolph, adjacent to glenn mark park. the accident happened just before 2:30 this morning. in the early morning hours, after sunrise, the investigation went airborn. they used a u.s. park police helicopter to take one of the investigators up to get a look, overall look of the accident scene. the car remains wedged between the guardrail and several trees here. this accident occurred as officers were responding to a call from other officers, a call for assistance for an incident

involving several individuals nearby. we hear more details on what happened from montgomery county police spokesperson, captain paul starks. >> it occurred at about 2:21 this morning. there were several officers en route to a fight call that involved a large number of subjects. one of the officers was westbound on randolph road. as he approached denley road on randolph road, his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. he was seriously injured, was taken by fire rescue to holy cross hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. the reasons for his vehicle leaving the roadway are still under investigation. >> again, other officers who were responding to this call were the first on the scene. they administered first aid to the officer and called it in and stayed with him until the ambulance came, but he was pronounced dead at holy cross

hospital. he is a seven-year veteran of the force. back to you. >> a tragedy on any day, but especially this easter morning. thanks for your reporting. in california, polices are looking for the man who opened fire inside a restaurant and killed four people in the middle of the day. this happened at a mom and pop mediterranean restaurant saturday afternoon. police say the shooting appears to be random. police are trying to figure out a motive two people remain in the hospital. suicide bombers killed at least 30 people and injured more than 160 people in iraq. three car bombs went off outside the german, egyptian and iranian embassies in baghdad. the attacks happened within minutes of each other. tensions have risen since the march 7th parliamentary elections. iraqi officials warn the violence could escalate. in russia, an explosion caused a freight train to

derail. it happened earlier this morning. police say an explosi blew up and destroyed railway tracks and derailed eight freight cars. the soyuz spacecraft docked at the international space station overnight. an american student and two russian cosmonauts joined three other crew members already at the iss. nasa plans to launch shuttle "discovery" tomorrow morning, that crew will dock at iss for a 13-day mission. the time period will mark the first time four women are in space at the same time. it's 9:34. a girl with an amazing story. she endured a war, a refugee camp before making it to the united states. how you can give her survival story a storybook ending. and the weather has been absolutely gorgeous, but all good things must come to an end. justin will have the full

news 4 studio, a temporary one, until our new one is built which is under construction right now. the cameras was rolling when she told me a little of her story. beginning in war-torn sierra leone where she says she was lucky to escape the killings. you had quite a traumatic situation as a young child. >> yes. >> reporter: do you know who saved your life? >> well, i was put in a refugee camp. >> reporter: she says from there she was able to come to this country. and she says she is working hard in school here. >> achieve my goals. >> what are your goals? >> go to college and be a volleyball coach. >> reporter: do you play volleyball now? >> yeah. >> reporter: are you good at that? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: her other goal is to become a lawyer. to help kids like herself. >> help kids. get them in foster care if they are being abused. >> reporter: social worker amy thomas says the goal is to find a permanent adoptive home for her. >> we're just looking for a loving, nurturing home. really somebody that can give her a stable environment.

or just some traveling, all is good on the local highways. outside, live look now. plenty of activity across the tidal basin, why not with this perfect weather. if you can't get outside today, you will get your chances over the next few days. looking at a great forecast. temperatures currently, national airport at 60 degrees. light northeast breeze coming in at about 3 miles per hour. last year we had a high of 50 degrees. today, if we can make it to 73, which i'm sure we can with no problem that would be the warmest easter in the past ten years. breaking record numbers here as far as easter weekend. current temperatures across the rest of the region, mid 60s to the south and west of us, virginia, piedmont, culpepper, 64 degrees. one cool spot, winchester, martinsburg, cooler there, lower 60s. we are not feeling any influence from the bay breezes at all. most likely we will not because

our winds should be out of the northwest moving off land, off shore. that's good news there. doppler radar keeping thing dry. we had a cold front come through, but no moisture with it dry with a few clouds around. let's compare the temperatures this time yesterday. eight degrees warmer than 24 hours ago, that's because the absence of the low clouds and fog it is cooler out towards west of the appalachians, towards the ohio valley. that's because the air mass has cooled off behind the front, still temperatures well above average. we have another round of heat building our way coming in for tuesday and wednesday. still warm behind this frontal passage a few mid to high level clouds outside now, as the front moves off shore, skies will clear out more by the afternoon. high pressure off the east coast will bring a nice southerly flow for the next several days. one little fly in the ointment, monday night some clouds, maybe a shower in the mountains, but i
