eastern high school in the district after a fire. about 100 firefighters battled that blaze in the 1700 block of east capital street northeast sunday afternoon. the fire destroyed a rubberized roofing material that crews were laying down. investigators say the fire started on the roof of one of those buildings that was undergoing renovation. it appears to be accidental. investigators are trying to find out what sparked the fire. a few workers were inside and got out safely. firefighters were called to this restaurant fire in prince george's county. the fire broke out at the mid-atlantic seafood just after 1:30 sun afternoon. fire and smoke were seen coming from the roof when firefighters arrived. the restaurant was evacuated. no injuries reported. the cause of that fire remains under investigation. we're following breaking news from new york city. more than 250 firefighters battle a seven alarm fine a high rise building on manhattan's lower east side. more than 0 two dozen

third street tunnel. everything is moving under a very light volume of traffic so far this morning. let's head on over out to the west, dulles toll road, dulles greenway looks like a very quiet start. route 28 not much happening. nice and quiet on a monday. back to you. 4:42 is your time. dramatic rescue and the search is still on for another possible victim. a car ran off the road and ran into walnut creek in oakland, california. >> this woman was able to get out of the car. you see she was carried away miles by the current there. a group of teenagers called 911 when they heard the crash and then heard the woman calling for help. rescue crews were able to pull her out. her condition is unknown right now. the person who was trapped in the car died. witnesses and police report say there was another person in the car who was carried away by the current as well. the cause of this accident is known. amazing rescue.

explosion one week ago. over the weekend the bodies of the four missing miners were found. officials say high levels of methane gas inside the mine may have played a role in the disaster. those high levels have also stalled the recovery of the bodies. crews will need to drill another hole to vent the mine before they can continue. new this morning a car bomb exploded outside a british spy headquarters in northern ireland. the blast happened near an army blast after midnight. several homes were evacuated. the explosion became hours before rival catholic leaders elect a new justice minister. iran will get a new missile-defense system. iranian tv said the country started production on what it calls an advanced air defense missile system. a number of medium range missiles will be delivered this year and capable of targeting enemy aircraft. the u.s. and israel have not

ruled out military action. despite all the extra costs associated with a flying these days there's some good news for air travellers. in 2009 planes were more likely to land on time and bags were less likely to get lost. more than 79% of flights arrived on time last year. that's 3.4% better than in 2008. also fewer than four bags per every 1,000 travellers were lost or damaged. that's down from five bags out of every 1,000 in 2008. i think that has a lot to do with the fact people aren't checking their bags any more. they are carrying it on. well the crew aboard the space shuttle woke up sunday night to a song by an italian artist. ♪ >> that is "because we believe." it was selected by commander alan poindexter.

bathroom in a bar in georgia. the georgia bureau of investigation and the police department turned their investigation over to the d.a. last week. the state's decision will be announced at a news conference today at 2:00 p.m. espn is reporting that roethlisberger will likely not be charged in this case. all eyes might have been on tiger woods at this year's masters but the win was the fan favorite, phil mickelson. >> a win for the family. >> he won his third masters title yesterday ending a four day tournament at 16 under-par. that was three strokes ahead of lee westwood who took second place. on hand to see his win was his wife. he joins an elite group of seven other golfers that won the masters at least three times. this was tiger woods first golf tournament following his sex scandal that rocked the world. tiger tied for fourth place. although he didn't win he found out he still has his fans. kristen dahlgren reports.

it is a big day in washington. more than 40 world leaders are in town to participate in president obama's nuclear security summit. because of that security is very tight. roads are closed, metro is affected and if you live or work anywhere near the convention center you're likely to run into some trouble. megan mcgrath joins us live from northwest washington with more. >> reporter: good morning. there is no question, security all around town is very, very tight. the area around the convention center, you're just going to want to avoid it all together. we have more than 40 world leaders who are here in washington for this two day summit. they are staying at various locations around town yet all will be coming at the same time to the convention center for the event, for the summit over the next two days. this is going to create huge traffic tie ups in our area. you can see some of the security we've got here. this is new york avenue actually at 6th. this is one of the secure perimeter entry points here

around the convention center. what they've done is they've created a security zone that goes for several blocks around the convention center. we have literally metal fencing that is in place all along the roadways here, the roads them sells have been closed down. some of these fences are as high as eight feet. they also have a number of vehicles that are parked strategically, large vehicles, things like dump trucksing parked strategically to serve as barriers. we have jersey walls anticipate widespread parking restrictions. so even roads that are open you're not allowed to park on those roads. it will be difficult. the security zone stretches from o street above the convention center down to massachusetts avenue and new york avenue. bounded by 11th and 6th street. this is a very large area around the convention center is that's blocked off and off limits to the public. people who live within that zone and there are apartment

buildings and businesses, those folks are only allowed in if they show i.d. proving that they actually live and have business in that location. so, off limits to the general public. no traffic going through. roads have bern closed down. mound vernon square metro station has been closed. trains will run through that station. trains will not stop. you will not be able to use that metro station and that's the situation for that metro station until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday. now in terms of the widespread road closures they are going to be in place until 8:00 p.m. on tuesday. of course it's monday so a lot of folks trying to get to work. this is going to be a tough, tough rush hour commute. people are going to want to stay away. telecommute if possible. a rough go for the next couple of days. back to you. thank you. this summit is a huge deal for the obama administration. it's been 60 years since the u.s. hosted this many world

for gridlock. president obama is hosting more than 40 world leaders at the washington convention center this morning and because of that roads are closed, parking is limited and security has been tightened all the way around. news 4 megan mcgrath joins us live from northwest washington with more. megan? >> reporter: good morning. it is going to be a tough go for folks who are trying to head into work. if you're anywhere near the area surrounding the convention center you can see behind me here the checkpoint that we have at 6th and new york avenue. this is one of a number of these checkpoints to get inside what is a secured perimeter all around the convention center. we have several blocks impacted. the roads are completely shut down. they put up these metal fences all around the sidewalks into literally enclose this area. some of these fences are as high as eight feet tall. of course the entire area is closed to the general public with the exception of people who live in that interior perimeter

area. folks that can prove that they live there, actually. they have to show i.d. and pass a security checkpoint to get to their offices or homes. anyone else who doesn't have business or doesn't live there will not be allowed inside the secured zone around the convention center. we're talking about a very large area here. the zone stretches from o street above the convention center down to massachusetts avenue and new york avenue and bounded by 11th and 6th streets. we also have the mount vernon square metro station closed. trains will be passing through underground. they will not stop. you won be able to committee mount vernon metro station. that will be the case until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday. all of the street closures that we're seeing, they are going to stay in effect until 8:00 p.m. on tuesday evening, after the summit concludes. then we'll start to see some of those roads re-open. we also have 13 bus routes that run through this area that have

to be detoured because of all the road closures as well. certainly a big inconvenience to people who live and work in the area. basically what folks are being told is to avoid the area entirely if that's at all possible. if you can telecommute that's also not a bad idea. just stay out of the city for the next couple of days, work from home if that's a possibility for you because we're certainly expecting some traffic tie ups. not minor roads. we're talking about a section of town that is heavily traveled, new york avenue, massachusetts avenue, these areas are closed down around the convention center. so you bet there's going to be a big impact. back to you. thanks, megan. 47 countries will be represented at today's summit and many leaders from those countries are already in washington. several arrived at andrews air force base in maryland this weekend. president obama already met with a number of leaders including those from india and pakistan. those are two of the most recent nuclear states.

it may be getting more expensive to fly but there is some good news for air travellers this morning. in recent times planes have been more likely to land on time and bags have been less likely to get lost. more than 79% of flights arrived on time last year. that's 3.4% better than in 2008. also fewer bags. fewer than four bags per every 1,000 travellers were lost or damaged. that's down from five bags to

every 1,000 in 2008. the next time you fly you could face fees for your carry on bag but one new york senator is asking the federal government to step in and stop the new charges. zmarlts schumer wrote a letter to treasury secretary timothy geithner asking to ends what he calls a loophole that allows the fees. even said carry-ons are necessary for travel often containing medication and necessities for family. last week spirit airlines said they are charging up to $45 for each carry on. they will charge for $30 if travellers pay in advance. >> every time that you buy an airline ticket there's something new you're being charged for. but charging for carry on bags steps over the line. >> spirit's carry on fees apply starting in august. >> young women who regularly drink alcohol are increasing the chance they will develop a condition that often precedes breast cancer according to a new study. researchers from harvard university studied 9,000 girls

age 16 to 23. they looked at their alcohol habits and then followed up two years later with their health history. they found those who drank six to seven days per week were five times more likely to develop benign breast disease, a condition that increase the risk for cancer. experts are concerned because more women starting to drink alcohol in high school and college. the fiz has gone from the beverage industry according to a new study. about 3/4 of people surveyed say they will spend the same or less on soft drinks. a decline held through across the board except for bottled juices and coffee which indicated an increase. those surveyed also indicated they would drink the same or less wine, beer and liquor as well. your monday morning could be off to a frustrating start. we'll help you navigate all those street closures downtown. >> the search is on for a killer

lives, works, drivers, walks doing anything near that area. megan mcgrath has more with the details. >> reporter: good morning. it certainly is going to have a huge impact on people who live and work in this area. take a look behind me here. we're at new york and 6th street. this is one of several checkpoints in the area. we're starting to see some activity pick up this morning. as we get closer to the actual start time of the summit we're going to start to see those motorcades rolling through town. we have more than 40 world leaders who are staying in washington and attending this summit. they are staying at various locations but will all have to come here for the start of that summit. so right around, later on this morning we'll see a lot of activity. we're going to see rolling road closures as those motorcades make their way downtown here to the convention center and that, of course, is going to cause major traffic tie ups. we have a number of roads and we're talking major arteries that are closed. take a look at this map.

the security zone streps from o street above the convention center down to massachusetts avenue and new york avenue and bounded by 11th and 6th streets in northwest washington. major arteries through town shut down in the area of the convention center. that is going to remain the case until 8:00 on tuesday. that's when we'll start to see some of those roads re-opening. should also mention that mount vernon square's metro station, that station is closed. trains will simply continue on underground to roll through that area. they will not stop at the station. you will not be able to exit at that station. that will remain the case until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday. we also have 13 bus routes that are being detoured because of the road closures in the area. folks who take the bus want to be aware of that. beyond that, even if the road is open, don't think that you can park there. if you're in the area of the convention center. we have widespread parking

alexandria police are on the hunt for a man they believe killed his daughter and her mother. the bodies were discovered late sunday morning in a high rise apartment on south reynolds street. tracee wilkins joins us now live from alexandria with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is the apartment building where it happened. police were called here for a domestic disturbance but when they got here the two bodies were here on the scene. now they are looking for a suspect. police are looking for 34-year-old simon bahta asfeha. now he had a relationship with the mother, 27-year-old seble tessema and is the father of her 3-year-old daughter. they are the two victims in this case. 10:30 yesterday morning police responded to south reynolds street in alexandria for the report of a domestic disturbance

quarterback assaulted her in a bathroom in a bar in georgia. the georgia bureau of investigation and the police department turned their investigation over to the d.a. last week. the state's decision will be announced at a news conference today at 2:00 p.m. espn is reporting that roethlisberger will likely not be charged in the case. the spotlight was on tiger woods at this year's masters tournament but the win went to fan favorite phil mickelson. there it is. phil mickelson won his third masters tournament ending the tournament at 16 under-par. three strokes ahead of lee westwood who took second place. on hand to see the win was his wife who has been battling breast cancer. he joins an elight group of seven other golfers who won the masters at least three times. after spending the last five months out of the spot light tiger woods put on a strong showing at this year's masters. he struggled on his last day and tied for fourth place.

of the emergency responder equipment into place in preparation for today's summit. and we're starting to see an uptick in the traffic in the area. we're not at full on rush hour but starting to see more people come through the area. i have seen a number of people doing illegal u-turns on new york avenue. they come up upon the area, realize they can't get any further so they pull an illegal u-turn in the middle of the road. not a great safe situation. let's look at this security zone. it begins at o street above the convention center, goes down to mass avenue and new york avenue and bounded by 11th and 6th streets. we're talking about several blocks around the convention center. all of those roads have been shut down. the mound vernon metro station is closed. you can't get off the train at that station. that will remain the case until 5:00 a.m. wednesday morning. we have widespread parking restrictions. all of the bus routes, 13 of

because of that most streets surrounding the washington convention center has been set down. a security zone has been set up from o street to new york avenue. >> reporter: it is going to be a tough couple of days for folks who work and live in the area of the convention center. you can see the security we have here. it is tremendous. they literally created a secure zone for several blocks surrounding the convention center. it's a very wide area that has been closed off. can you see the met alfencing there. some case the fences are about eight feet high. all around the perimeter of the secured zone. and so basically they shut down the road, vehicles cannot travel through the area. pedestrians, the only folks that are allowed in are people who live or work in that area, if they happen to have homes inside that secured perimeter and have

to show i.d., showing they, indeed, have an address inside that perimeter. a very secured zone. we have a number of world leaders who are going to be traveling for this two day summit coming here to the convention center all roughly at around the same time or in a short window of time. of course right around the same time when a lot of people are trying to make their way to work. it's not a great situation. we're expecting widespread traffic, widespread tieups and the like for people who travel through this area and really the best advice here is if you can avoid the area around the convention center that's the way to go. if you have any kind of flexibility in terms of altering your in time or what time you leave that's good. if you can work for home that's terrific as well. people are pulling illegal u-turns on new york avenue. not a great situation. really you want to plan on what you're going to do before you get here and not make last

the goal is for world leaders to come up with a plan to keep nuclear weapons away from terrorists. tracie potts is on capitol hill and joins us with more. good morning. >> reporter: the president has brought all of these leaders together troy to figure out some way of coming up with a plan for securing all of these nuclear weapons around the country. it is a two day summit that's starting today. interestingly, perhaps outside of the meeting what could end up having the biggest impact are these one on one events with president obama. >> we think we can make enormous progress. >> reporter: president obama met four foreign leaders including south africa which gave up its nuclear program. he'll sit down with five more today. the most critical, president hu jintao of china. the u.s. wants china to support sanctions against iran. >> iranians have to decide that its own security is better served by not having nuclear weapons than by having them. >> reporter: iran has been

it's trying to make a big deal out of something that doesn't amount to diddly. he was later criticized by the president of the naacp. all eyes might have been on tiger woods at this year's masters but it was fan favorite phil mickelson who came out on top. there you go. he won his third masters title yesterday ending the four day tournament at 16 under-par. that was three strokes ahead of lee west wood took second place on hand to see phil mickelson's win his wife amy who is battling breast cancer. he joins an elite group of seven other masters who won the masters seven times. >> this is tiger woods first golf tournament after his sex scandal. tiger tied for fourth place. although he didn't win he found out he still has his fans. kristen dahlgren reports. >> reporter: for tiger woods -- >> god, tiger. >> reporter: it wasn't the round he dreamed of.

aaron and eun, back to you. if you work downtown get ready for gridlock. president obama is hosting more than 40 world leaders at the washington convention center. roads are closed. park is limited. metro has had to adjust pap security zone has been set up from o street down to massachusetts and new york avenues and from 11th to 6th northwest. news 4 megan mcgrath joins us now from northwest washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. this is impacting a large section, a large area around the convention center. you can see the security checkpoint here at 6th street and new york avenue and the fences that are surrounding and crossing the street here that's the situation all around the convention center actually for several blocks around the convention center. we have these security fences in some areas they are eight feet high completely encircling this area. that's the case for the next two

days. this means major road closures. big arteries like new york avenue and massachusetts avenue are closed. that will cause major traffic tie ups for toblgs as they head to work here both today as well as tomorrow. the streets have been shut down. so you'll have to take alternative routes. we have extensive parking restrictions. mound vernon square, the metro station there is closed. the trains will just continue through. they will not allow anyone to exit at mount vernon square station and that will be the case until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday morning. so a big inconvenience for folks who live and work in this area. we've been talking to people this morning and they say they understand that there are a lot of world leaders who are here and security is important and so they say they are willing to deal with it for a couple of days. has this change what you had to do today? >> yes. usually we take the mount vernon metro. >> today? >> we're taking the gallery

place metro, i think f-we can get there. >> a bit of a walk. >> yeah. good to have a good walk in the morning. >> reporter: this is new york avenue where it intersectings 6th street. we're really not seeing much in the way of heavy traffic. a lot of people have gotten the warning to stay away from the area. that's the hope here that is if people plan, change their normal routines that we can try to avoid some of the major traffic tie ups because this is a situation with us for a couple of days. the summit is today and tomorrow and we're going to have motorcades coming to the area starting soon. that will mean rolling road closures. people will just have to plan and to think ahead and give themselves some extra time. hopefully a lot of folks will work from home. or change their in time and out time so we can avoid some major tie ups.

megan mcgrath in northwest washington. thank you. 47 countries will be represented at today's summit and many leaders from those countries are already in washington. several arrived at andrews air force base in maryland this weekend. president obama says the goal of this summit is for each nation to secure all nuclear weapons over the next four years. >> the single biggest threat to u.s. security both short term, medium term and long term would be the possibility of a terrorist organization obtaining a nuclear weapon. >> this week's summit will be the largest meeting of world leaders hosted by a u.s. president since world war ii. 25 before the hour now. the body of polish president lech kaczynski is back home in poland. poland's week of national mourning began in russia where the prime minister there, vladimir putin led a brief ceremony before sending off the remains of the polish president. at warsaw's airport, lech kaczynski's family and

government members paid their respect. the coffin then made its way to the government palace where tens ever thousands of poles in the lead streets. >> how can people of a country afford to lose their president? >> the plane carrying president lech kaczynski, his wife and other national leaders crashed on saturday morning in western russia. the first funeral of poland's mourned leaders can begin wednesday. the governor of west virginia is asking everyone to participate in a moment of silence to honor those killed in the deadly mine explosion. it will happen at 3:30 this afternoon. a team of federal investigators will arrive at the scene today. 29 miners died after an explosion one week ago at the massey energy upper big branch mine. over the weekend the bodies of the four missing miners were found. officials say high levels of methane gas inside the mine may have played role in that disaster. those high levels have also stalled the recovery of the bodies. crews will need to drill another

hole to vent the mine before they can continue. we're following breaking news out of new york city. more than 250 firefighters battled a seven alarm fire in a high rise building on manhattan's lower east side. more than two dozen firefighters were injured. two elderly residents were hospitalized in critical condition with smoke inhalation. the fire started on the first floor of a mixed residential and commercial building last night around 10:00 and then spread to two other buildings. the fire burned for four hours before being put under control. officials stay red cross is helping the 50 to 60 families who were displaced. 6:44 is your time. checking our top stories, a major nuclear security summit is going to cause some big traffic troubles this morning for people trying to goaltender around the district today. leaders from 47 countries are in town for the event and that means the district is on lockdown. jersey barriers and tall fences have also been built up and most streets around the washington convention center are closed. a security zone from o street northwest down massachusetts and new york avenues. bounded from 11th street to 6th street. most streets in that area will remain closed until 8:00 tomorrow night. the convention center metro station is also closed and trains will be passing through the station. riders will not be allowed off. classes will go on as normal at eastern high school in the district after a fire over the weekend. about 100 firefighters battled the fire in the 1700 block of east capital street northeast yesterday afternoon. investigators say the fire started on the roof of a building that was under

construction. it appears to be accidental. a few workers were in the building and got out safely. >> alexandria police are on the hunt for a man they believe killed his own daughter and her mother. the bodies were discovered late sunday morning in a i had rise apartment on south reynolds street. tracee wilkins joins us live from alexandria now with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. police say this man is the mother's former boyfriend and it all happened here in this apartment building. they were called here for a domestic disturbance but got here too late to save their lives and they are searching for this man. police are looking for 34-year-old simon bahta asfeha. he had a relationship with the mother, 27-year-old seble tessema. and is the father of her 3-year-old daughter. they are both the victims in this case. it all happened 10:30 a.m. police responded to south reynolds street in alexandria for reports of a domestic disturbance. when they arrived they found the mother and her child dead. police say they will need an

surveyed was about 35 minutes, 16% reported trips of an hour or more. traffic in the district will be especially bad today. more than 40 world leaders are in washington for president obama's nuclear security summit and because of that many streets surrounding the convention center in northeast washington have been sealed off. there's a security zone from o street to massachusetts and new york avenue and 11th street to 6th street. megan mcgrath has more. how is the traffic moving? >> reporter: people have heard the warnings to stay away from the area. if you look behind me this is 6th street where it intersekts with new york avenue. while we're seeing traffic pick up we're not seeing absolute gridlock. a lot of people have simply stayed out of the area and that's exactly the best bet for you if you work or live in this area. just take an alternative route. do something else beyond what you normally do because we have

so many road closures in this area that it is just a mess. the security zone is very large. it's completely surrounding the convention center and continues on for a couple of blocks. we're talking major roads like new york avenue, massachusetts avenue. we have major disruptions in this area. people by and large, those seem to understand. we tked to a couple of folks this morning and they say they understand that security is necessary. >> it seems to be necessary these days. you don't mind? >> no. >> reporter: mount vernon square station the metro station is closed. it will be that way until 5:00 a.m. on wednesday. best best stay away from the convention center. back to you. >> good advice. the summit is for world leaders to come up with a plan to keep nuclear weapons away from terrorist.
