we will not cower in fear, we'll not be intimidated. >> reporter: among the charges attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and terrorism transcending national borders. questions remain how shahzad was able to board the flixt he was placed on the no fly list hours before the plane was scheduled to take off. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. the suspect in this case apparently had ties to the washington area. faisal shahzad attended southeastern university in d.c. more than 10 years ago according to "the wall street journal." seu closed last year, the grad yat school now controls the records. it says it has not released information on shahzad. metro is stepping up security in response to that failed attack in new york. police officers will be setting up extra patrols outside a number of metro stations. increased presence was seen outside nationals park. metro says there is no information that leads it to believe there is a threat in

hours in virginia, police will patrol interstates 66, 95 and 395 as well as the dulles toll road and interstate 270 and route 50. >> there is good news if you take float's red line to work. you may not feel as cramped much longer. metro is in the process of ajusting the schedule. you probably have to wait a minute or two longer for trains but more a cars will be in service. several factors made it overcrowded. metro's gm says the schedule addresses the issues. >> we'll be moving to a schedule that realizes the reality of that system, and what that should help do is increase the reliability of that line. we'll see how that works, but that should go into effect shortly. >> the new schedule should start in june or july. it will be metro's first adjustment to the red line since

2004. autopsy results could be released today in the death of a uva lacrosse player murdered on campus. students at the university of virginia held a vigil to remember yeardley love. the fellow lacrosse player charged with her murder appeared in court. investigators are looking into reports that the two may have had violent encounters in the past. julie carey reports. >> reporter: on the university of virginia's lawn candles glowed, a silent tribute to yeardley love. the university of virginia lacrosse player was found dead early monday in her amount. her former boyfriend george huguely on the men's lacrosse team faces a first-degree murder charge. student leaders refused comment. but this junior who has known her says he's stunned with court documents that say that hugely viciously attacked love. >> i've known george eight years and it doesn't seem like anything that he's capable of.

this whole thing seems so unreal. i didn't believe it at first but now all the details came out, just, you know, i'm sort of in shock. spoke with some lacrosse players said they couldn't get to sleep last night. >> reporter: the search warrant documents say hugely kicked in love's door, that he shook her beating her head against the wall. the documents say that love was found on her bed, her head in a pool of blood, her face bruised. despite that hugly's attorney said he'll show the death was an accident, not murder. >> we're confident that miss love's death was not intended but an accident with a tragic outcome. >> reporter: the police chief says the continuing investigation is focused on the prior relationship between love and hugely. friends say there was previous abuse. >> there had been no complaints to the police. whether there was discussion to others outside law enforcement is relevant to our discussion

with friends. >> reporter: both the victim and the suspect were scheduled to graduate on this lawn in about three weeks. george huguely's attorney says his client has withdrawn from the ufrmt he'll be staying in town for the time being in a jail cell. there is word both the men's and women's lacrosse teams will finish their seasons. yeardley love's high school paid tribute to her on the lacrosse field yesterday. the team put black tape on their sticks and orange ribbons in their hair and wrote her former number on their legs. medical marijuana is a signature away from becoming legal. the council pass add measure legalizing the drug for chronically ill patients. it heads to mayor fenty. congress would have 30 days to review it before it becomes law f. that happens the district would join 14 states that allow

medical marijuana. the d.c. court of appeals is weighing arguments in a case about gay marriage in the city. yesterday judges heard arguments in favor of putting the issue to the ballot. this comes about two months after the city legalized same-sex marriage. opponents maintain the argument that voters should have a say. it could be receiver months before the court announces its decision. sex offenders will now face tougher laws and longer sentences in maryland. the governor signed several new bills, last year's murder of sarah foxwell is one of the cases that helped shape these laws. foxwell was abducted by a registered sex offender and her body discovered in the woods. the laws will increase the maximum and mandatory minimum sentences for people convicted of crimes against children. 4:37 is your time. 63 degrees. still to come, a disturbing story in maryland. >> a local well known funeral home shut down because of what investigators found in the

good morning, welcome back. a prominent prince george's county funeral home is shut down after inspectors found piles of bodies in a garage.

chambers funeral home is located on cleveland avenue in riverdale. an inspector made a surprise inspection in april. he noticed a pile of 40 body bags that contained bodies, scattered about 12 by 12 feet high on the floor of a garage. published reports say many were cadavers from the medical school and the school had a contract with the home to cremate them. the owner told news 4 his business will be able to complete other arrangements until friday, then the business will be shult down. chambers says he's cooperating with investigators and hopes soon to have the suspension lifted. concerns about witness intimidation prompted officials to investigate the west virginia mine blast. a team will work anonymously with miners and others who fear retaliation for speaking to investigators. federal officials declined to identify specific instances of

intimidation or retaliation at the mine. a former miner said people will not speak out because they are scared of losing their job. oil continues to pour into the gulf of mexico and inch toward the shore as teams look for a way to cap the crippled rig. bp says the slick could grow to more than ten times the current estimate. kristen dahlgren has the latest. >> reporter: along the gulf coast it is a struggle to survive the massive oil slick. from the wildlife many fear are already being coated by the toxic mess, to those now in a desperate race to lay down protective barriers. >> expected to make an impact around three days from now. we laid approximately a mile and a half, almost a mile and three-quarters. we have a mile and a half to go. >> reporter: it's slow going. those who used to fish the waters joined in the fight to save them. instead of hauling in their

catch, they now haul out miles of boom, many now working for bp, the company they blame for the spill. >> like the rest of the people i don't want no free money, i want to work for it. i got the boats, i got the knowledge. >> reporter: but many also have the knowledge that things are forecast to get much worse in the coming days. noaa reports a remotely operated vehicle was able to cap one of the leaks but some 200,000 gallons of oil a day are still pouring into the gulf, and full deployment of the massive boxes to cover the gushers could still be a week away and may not even work. >> i think it's pretty clear here that there was not a proper preparation for the worst case scenario occurring in the gulf. >> reporter: ready or not, many say that worse case scenario is here and the oil's arrival on land isn't far behind. it is hard to predict when that arrival will be.

some models suggest it could be in the next 24 hours or so. the national weather service reports the forecast will be good for the cleanup and containment efforts through the rest of the week, but many here fear it is just too much oil to stop. kristen dahlgren, burrs. >> the boxes supposed to arrive today. a barge is expected to haul it to a spot 50 miles offshore at midday. such domes have never been tried at this depth, about a mile down in the water, because of the extreme water pressure there. volume can in ash is causing travel troubles. flights at airports in scotland and northern ireland are grounded as another ash cloud threatens to spill into england and ireland's air space. more than 200 flights yesterday had to be canceled because of the same problem. british authorities say the ash might reach northwestern england and wales but believe it will

miss london. >> iran's spt saying the internal politics of the u.s. and iran is making it hard to reach agreement on its nuclear program. at the united nations president mahmoud ahmadinejad said there is no credible proof his country has nuclear weapons. the united states and other western countries, however, still suspect the country could be using its uranium enrichment program to build a bomb. ahmadinejad spoke and said that both iran and the u.s. need to exercise restraint. >> translator: when we say we don't want the bomb we mean it. we're not afraid of anyone. if we want a bomb we'll tell everyone that we want it. because we are simply not afraid. >> the u.n. security council is considering another round of sanctions against iran to punish it for not giving up its enrichment program. >> this morning we have a

consumer alert. nissan recalling more than 135,000 vehicles because of a possible air bag hazard. the recall involves cars made under the infinity brand. it affects g 35 sedans model 2005 and 2006 and coupe 2005 and 2007. there is an apparent risk that the passenger seat air bag may not deploy in a crash. nissan says no injuries have been reported as a result of the defect. the automaker says it will provide federal safety officials with a full repair plan sometime this month and notify affected owners by june. >> president obama could announce as early as today his pick to become the next u.s. supreme court justice. the president interviewed diane wood yesterday in the oval office. wood is at least the fourth finalist for the seat being vacated by justice john paul stevens. he announced that he plans to retire this summer. wood interviewed with the president last year for the supreme court seat sonia

sotomayor now holds. >> one of the current justices is being honored for courage. >> i am enormously honored to receive an award bearinging her name. and to take her back with me to chambers. >> the women's national democratic group awarded her with the elanor award named after eleanor roosevelt and presented to someone the organization believes demonstrates the principles that define the former first lady. hillary clinton and nancy pelosi have won in past years. >> virginia's attorney general is turning up the heat on a former uva professor over research on climate change. he is demanding favors from the university as part of his investigation into whether the former professor michael mann, pla nip lated data to secure taxpayer dollars for research. mann is now a professor at penn state. he insists the work has been

we do have a clear sky all around the region, high pressure moving in, will give us lots of sun with high temperatures climbing to the low 80s by mid afternoon. sun rise, sunset 8:04. maybe clouds tomorrow morning in the low 60s, a weak front on thursday, and highs reaching the low 80s and a few clouds tomorrow. then on friday a little more humid. afternoon highs reaching the upper 70s. looks like friday evening as a front comes through we might get showers and thundershowers, there is a small chance of that, a weak front. and a small chance of that front drifting through saturday morning with a few showers. dry for saturday and the weekend. highs reaching low 70s saturday afternoon but sunny and sunday's highs only in the 60s. should be a little cooler than average first part of next week as well. how's the traffic? >> off we go for a sample around the area. not too bad so far. most of the interstates and northern virginia unencumbered at this hour. we do have a lot of overnight road work.

an agency in charge of rehabilitating troubled youth in the district is coming under fire this morning. there are serious questions being raised after three teens were arrested in the murder of d.c. principal brian betts. jackie bensen has more. >> reporter: officials confirm that alante saunders, sharif lancaster and deontra gray all 18 all walked away from the supervision of the district's department of youth rehabilitation services known as dyrs when younger. johnny walker is president of the union that represents the case workers charged with supervising the juvenile offenders. >> i've been working with young people and juveniles since i was

19 so for over 30 years and for the first time in ever i pause when the sun sets thinking about whether i want to travel any street in d.c. >> reporter: walker estimates there are 800 young offenders in the system, some on home detention, some in half-way houses, about 60 in custody at the new beginnings facility. he says there are currently about 27 social workers handling all of those cases. >> they are outruled by management because there's a push to get these kids out of secure detention, one, you can't -- there is no where to put them. you built a $46 million facility with 60 beds. >> reporter: court papers outline a plan in which the suspects used a phone sex chat line to set up betts for a robbery that turned into a murder. the documents indicate the suspect gray admitted he was in betts home at the time of the

homicide. items found in the search warrant will be examined to determine if they came from other crimes. d.c. attorney general says his office has begun an investigation into how the three suspects were able to leave juvenile custody. jackie bensen, "news4 today." >> the three teens charged with betts murder could receive life in prison without parole. federal regulators investigate apple this morning, the investigation focuses on apple's requirement that developers use programs to develop all of the popular applications on the iphone and ipad. the question is whether apple hurts competition. apple is not commenting on the cases. >> new information this morning about the recall of dozens of popular children's medicines. the fda says bacteria-ridden products were used to make the medications. the agency adds they have not shone signs of contamination but urge parents to throw out the products including children's

no accidents or incidents blocking your drive. wilson bridge fine. water main break inside the beltway on central avenue near richie road with at least two travel lanes closed off. that's going to cause trouble. told you about the accident up in gaithersburg, clapper road closed to traffic right now. in the stretch between 355 and quinns orchard. northern virginia, fine. joe. >> thanks very much. new information in that times square car bombing attempt. we're learning that the suspect is providing authorities with vital information. faisal shahzad is expected to appear in court. he was arrested monday night after he had already board add plane to dubai. it turns out shahzad had been added to the do not fly list earlier that day. that's raising questions why he was able to buy a ticket and board the plane before he was caught. some of the other passengers on the flight said that they did not realize what was happening

when the plane returned to the gate. >> i didn't think it was anything to be concerned about with. obviously he was trying to get out of the country, so i didn't feel like there was any threat. there was no skirmish, no incident of that nature. >> security forces in pakistan have arrested nearly a dozen people in connection with this bombing attempt. shahzad told investigators he traveled there between july 2009 and february 2010 and visited a part of the country where al qaeda and the taliban typically set up training camps. shahzad has also had apparently ties to the washington area, according to "the wall street journal" he attended southeastern university more than ten years ago. seu closed last year and the graduate school now controls that school's student records. it says it has not released information on shahzad. metro is also stepping up security in response to the failed attack in new york.

just you know, i'm sort of in shock. spoke with some lacrosse players said they couldn't get to sleep last night. >> some of love's friends told news 4 that they had seen signs of past abuse. huguely's attorney is saying the death was a tragic accident and not a murder. good news for those of you about to head out and hop on metro rail. the agency is working to relieve congestion on the red line. megan mcgrath is live outside the gallery place metro station in northwest washington with more on the red line relief. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, joe. metro's interim general manager wants to tweak the schedule on the red line to help speed things up during rush hour. that's something that hasn't been done in a number of years, not since 2004. since then there have been a number of things occurred, the trains running in manual mode. they have been since june's crash. you have overcrowding on the

platforms and other factors that have caused a bit of a log jam on the red line during rush hour. so, the hope is by changing the schedule, just a little bit, not dramatically, they can help speed things up, get people where they want to go faster. what they are talking about doing here is actually increasing the -- seems counter intuitive but increasing the time between trains. from 30 seconds to a minute depending where you are on the red line. and also with that they will add additional eight-car train. longer trains but more time in between those trains. the general manager thinks that will help speed things up. >> we will be moving to a schedule that realizes the reality of that system, and what that should help do is increase the reliability of that line. we will see how that works. that should be going into effect fairly shortly. >> reporter: and so part of the -- what enters into this is that you'll reduce the starting

respectful manner. when inspectors did a surprise inspection they found that is not the case at the funeral home. a pile of bodies was found in the garage. inspectors discovered 40 bodies in a 12 by 12 pile in the garage that contained the funeral home's cream atory. many of the bodies were cadavers and supposed to be cremated but the owner told the paper too many were coming in too fast and he fell behind. the state board has suspended the funeral home's license. the owner bill chambers tells news 4 he can't comment on the investigation but she cooperating and hopes to get this suspension lifted. they have until friday to complete all of their planned funerals, then this business will be shut down. i'm tracee wilkins live in riverdale. back to you. >> thank you. oil continues to pour into the gulf of mexico and inch toward the shoreline as teams look for a way to cap the

was it appropriate for police to use a taser gun to stop a fan running on a sports playing field? philadelphia police have launched a review to decide. the incident in question happened monday night at a game at a phillies -- a phillies game, rather. an officer used a taser on a 17-year-old fan. the fan was arrested and charged with criminal trespass. some amazing video of hikers rescued from the edge of a water fall. take a look at this. this trio tried to cross the river upstream from a water fall in georgia. they became trapped in the water when they were about halfway across the river. that's the way it always is. rescuers used a rope to pull the hikers to safety. look at that. ouch. local officials say this is a popular spot to cross the river. and they had to make rescues at this same spot before. do people not learn? >> holding my breath looking at

teammates. you can see college classmates lit candles yesterday. her friends say, however, there was a history of abuse with her ex-boyfriend, george huguely. who grew up in chevy chase. huguely was set to graduate in spring. he has withdrawn from uva and sits in a jail cell being held without bond. now those who have known huguely find the situation nearly impossible to believe. >> i've known george eight years and it just doesn't seem like anything that he's capable of. this whole thing seems so unreal almost. i didn't believe it at first but now you know, with all of the details came out, just you know, i'm sort of in shock. spoke with some lacrosse players said they couldn't get to sleep. >> we're confident that miss love's death was not intended but an accident with a tragic outcome. >> these are some details made public.

chronically ill patients. the bill heads to mayor fenty who is expected to sign it. congress would have 30 days to review it before it becomes law. if that happens the district would join 14 other states that allow medical marijuana. the d.c. court of appeals is weighing arguments in a case about gay marriage in the city. yesterday, judges heard arguments in favor of putting the issue on the ballot. this comes two months after the city legalized same-sex marriage. opponents of the law argue that the voters should have a say and that the issue should be put on a referendum. it could be several months before the court announces its decision. sex offenders will now face tougher laws and longer sentences in maryland. the governor signed several new bills. last year's murder of 11-year-old sarah foxwell in maryland is just one of the cases that helped shape these laws. foxwell was abducted by a registered sex offender.

camera on our tower, it's looking toward washington, a dream-sickle look to the sky. that's a live picture there. you can see we have a clear sky, dawn arrives in about 15 minutes. and the air is certainly chilly. at this hour, temperature right now at reagan national airport is at a cool 62. the dew point is dry down to near 50 degrees. if the temperaturep droed to 50 we would have 100% humidity. there is a separation so it's rather dry. we have a calm wind as well on this wednesday morning. looking at the other temperatures, it's quite a bit chillier away from the potomac river where reagan national is located of course. and their temperature sensor is picking up the heat off the river and off the pavement. you get a few thousand feet away from there it's in the 50s. prince george's county low 50s now, montgomery county, only near 50 degrees there. as well as fairfax county.

metro is in the process of adjusting its red line schedule in peak travel hours. you probably have to wait longer for trains to arrive but more 8-car trains will be in service. several factors made it overcrowded including the opening of the new york avenue station and the manual operation of trains. the new schedule should be in place by june or july. medical marijuana is a signature away from becoming legal in the district. the d.c. council passed a measure legalizing the drug for chronically ill patients. congress would have 30 days to review the legislation before it becomes law f. that happens the district would join 14 states that allow medical marijuana. and the d.c. court of appeals is weighing arguments in a case about gay marriage. yesterday judges heard arguments in favor of it putting the issue on the ballot. this about two months after the district legalized same-sex marriage. opponents argue that voters

ease congestion on the red line. megan mcgrath is live now outside the metro station in northwest for a closer look at the changes. good morning, megan. >> reporter: good morning, joe. the red line is popular line, if you take it you know that it can get crowded during the rush hour period. metro's general manager, the interim general manager is trying to change that. he wants to squeak the schedule on the red line to ease congestion. that schedule hasn't been changed in a number of years since 2004, a lot has happened in that time in terms of ridership and the switch to operations in manual mode since last june's crash, that slowed things on the line down quite a bit. he plans to increase the time between trains. not dramatically, 2 1/2 to 6 minutes between trains depending where on the red line you are. he also plans to add more of the longer eight-car trains, hopefully he says this will help

>> the debt crisis in greece is now starting to hit wall street hard. courtney reagan joins us live with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the tide of red ink washed over wall street yesterday possibly could be affecting us today. we're seeing things turn around, futures were much lower. we sort of gained a little strength back. stocks did see their biggest drop in three months tuesday on fears that greece's crisis will spread. spain's prime minister denying his country has asked the imf for money. the euro falling against the dollar which sapped strength out of oil and gold and stocks fell as well. europe was lower again kind of turning the tables this morning. gaining some strength. we'll get data on the private sector jobs and then the health of the u.s. services sector a bit later this morning. the dow did ultimately drop 225 points or 2%, we're going to

saturday at 10,926. the nasdaq lost 3% or 74 points to start us at 2424. bp expects to plug one of the three holes where the underwater well is leaking into the gulf of mexico and install a containment device in the next week. that 70-ton dome is seen as the best hope. roughly 2.6 million gallons of oil have spilled into the gulf since the blast that sank the rig. congress is introduced a measure to lift the liability limits for economic damage from the spill to $10 billion. bp is responsible for all cleanup. executives met on tuesday. back to you. >> thank you. as long as we're talking money grab your tickets if you played the mega millions game. some of you may have won a few

team and sorority sisters are. friends say there was a history of abuse with her ex-boyfriend. huguely was also set to graduate in spring. now he's withdrawn and sits in a jail in charlottesville without bond. huguely admitted to kicking in love's door, hitting her head against the wall, police found her in a pool of blood, her face bruised, her right eye swollen shut. there appears no murder weapon and huguely's lawyer says it was an unintended accident with a tragic outcome. those who know huguely find it nearly impossible to believe. eun, back to you. >> kimberly, thank you. it is time for a final check of the top stories. one person is dead, two injured after a car crashed into a pole in montgomery county. police say the driver lost control of the car around 11:00 last night at the intersection of game preserve and clopper
