♪ through song and silence, students at the university of virginia paid tribute to a lacrosse player who was murdered. in the meantime, school officials are questioned about their knowledge of the man who's accused of killing her. >> tonight's vigil in charlottesville allows students the chance to grieve. it also led to a discussion of her death. the fact that any domestic violence should not be tolerated. aaron gilchrest joins us with more. airn? >> doreen some, powerful imagery here tonight. that was a central part of the message of tonight's vigil. some 3,000 students gathered here at uva to listen to the school's leaders tell them that they do not ever have to live in fear or in silence. and as a part of the message, it was woven into the grieving process, the death of yardley love. also part of that process, they hope will get started tonight, healing. >> they came in hushed masses,

and as the stands of the ampitheater spilled, in song and tribute. >> we are here tonight to honor her memory and the beautiful life that she led. and we are also here tonight as a community to support you. >> and as the sun gave way to candlelight, they remembered yardley love was only 22 years old, weeks away from graduation, a star lacrosse player, described as a woman of uncommon talent. she was the seventh uva student to die this year, and the wounds run deep. >> this really hurts, especially in my class right before graduation. >> on this night, cavaliers embraced in sorrow and solidarity. they cried teers that only the uva family can right now, for a sister lost, and they struggled to make sense of it all, their leaders made pleas. >> let us strive to keep her

legacy, memory, and above all else her mu manity. close to our hearts and mind. >> if you fear for yourself or for others any form of violence, act. seek support that belongs to you. because you belong to us. >> i think it's the perfect tribute to have tonight. i'm glad to see it was so popular, i think it was an appropriate showing. >> i'm really glad it happened. >> they came for yardley, they cried for yardley. they illuminated the night sky for yardley and each other. >> funeral services for yardley love will be held in baltimore this coming saturday at the cathedral in queens, and then may 23rd when the commencement exercises happen here at uva, there will be a degree awarded to yardley posthumously.

live in sharlcharlottesville, bo you. >> thank you. >> school administrators at uva held a different kind of gathering, a news conference, they were questioned about what and when the university knew about george hughley's behavior. >> reporter: school officials spent nearly an hour today answering questions about george hugly's past. they maintained there were no obvious signs with the lacrosse player, but the lacrosse team as a whole is another story entirely. >> university officials insist they never received a complaint about george hughley and yardley bluff. while it's unclear whether alcohol played a role in love's death, wednesday university officials admitted there is a

problem. >> away from our jurisdiction there seems to be an increasing trend of heavy control consumption. >> and especially heavy among the school's lacrosse players. >> there are violations, violations of our alcohol policy that takes place throughout the course of the year. >> reporter: nearly 20% of the members on the lacrosse roster have been charged with offenses. meanwhile, police reveal some of the things they discovered in hughley's apartment wednesday afternoon, anything that could contain blood. among the items, a princeton lacrosse t-shirt. they took numerous d it na swabs from the apartment. meanwhile, back on campus, university officials concede they have heard the whispers and read the reports detailing a history of bad behavior by george hughley, but noted they

never got a single report from campus. >> you have a lot of young people who are struggling with what they might have known, what they might have seen, and the consequence of hindsight, it's always much easier to blame yourself with what happened. >> today when asked about going-forward, uva's president said the killings like this are so rare there's no procedure in place. doreen, back to you. >> thank you, craig. a teenager was shot on a crowded metro bus here in the district this evening. that shooting happened on a u 2 bus at the corner of 18th and minnesota in southeast washington just after 5:00, the 17-year-old victim was hit in the wrist and in the side. he remains hospitalized. nobody else on the bus was injured. witnesses say the gunman got off and ran off, police are still

looking for him tonight. >> a youth soccer coach is in trouble tonight, after he was arrested for assaulting a refer referee. it happened in virginia, when the coach got upset about a free kick awarded in a soccer game for 10-year-olds. the referee was in the seats. >> he screamed, you imbow sil and he charged the field. the kid put his hand up to get between him and the ref, and he bowled that child over, went after the other one, grabbed him by his shirt about this area, it looked like his hand was in his face. >> reporter: the parent describing the interaction, the players 10-year-old boys. the coach is 34. jason atkins of fredericksburg is charged with two counts of assault and battery, and one count of destruction of property

for his alleged actions for the second referee. >> decided to grab a pair of sunglasses off his head, crush the sunglasses, and then grabbed the referee by the neck, and that's when several of the parents who were witnesses ran off to the field and stopped the incident. >> spring league soccer is in full swing. every day after school, the fields are full of youngsters who are supposed to be learning the basics of sports and sportsmanship. parents are shocked by accounts of what happened tuesday. >> in the case of a coach doing that, it can't happen. >> there's no place for it. i mean, the recreational soccer, to begin with. >> he had no comment on his legal trouble. a spokesman for the sponsylvania government says the investigation is ongoing. >> if my son was on his team he would never play for him again. i would not feel safe leaving my

son on the field alone with him. >> there were other complaints about atkins unsportsmanlike behavior. it's not clear what if anything was done. jackie benson, news 4. the suspect in the times square bombing is assumed to have worked alone. authorities say they don't believe there are any other u.s. suspects, they now say several arrests in pakistan this week are unrelated. shahzad is cooperating with investigators, some are upset when he was arrested he was read his miranda rights, which includes the right to remain silent. we got some news tonight up from new york city, we are told that the triborrow bridge in new york has been shut down.

a district family wants to know who could shoot and kill a loving family dog playing in a fenced yard. bear began barking behind his house in the 5300 block of b-street southeast. a shot rang out and the family found bear shot in the neck. the washington humane society rushed bear to an animal hospital, but veterinarians were unable to save him. bear's owner is heart broken. >> i just wanted to know why did someone shoot my dog. i had him since he was a puppy. >> investigators are on the case, they offered a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. the owner of a funeral home where more than 40 bodies were found in bags on a floor apologized today. chambers funeral home and crematorium was ordered closed

this week after that grizzly discovery. the owner says the bodies were cadavers that were supposed to be cremated as part of a contract with georgetown medical school. the funeral homemade an error in judgment and picked up too many cadavers at one time. the cremation process is underway, and the ashes will be returned to the university. still to come tonight, one local hospital is taking the guess work out of emergency room waiting time. a member of the nbc family has won the mega millions jackpot, and then showed up for work. plus, veronica's back to

letting patients know about wait times before they arrive. >> the first thing you think about when you go to a hospital is, i'm going to have to wait. >> mike came to the emergency room at restin emergency center because his eye was burning and tearing. he didn't want to spend his whole day at the er. >> that's half the battle of coming to the hospital, you just don't know. >> a new program lets you know the wait time in advance. you send a text message with the letters er to 23,000, and you'll get a text back asking for your zip code. the hospital replies with the wait time on that moment. on this day, the wait is 14 minutes, meaning it will take 14 minutes between the time you walk into the hospital and the time you're seen by a doctor. >> we see 45,000 patients a year, or close to that, and if we can see all these people in

16 to 20 minutes, it's amazing. >> patients suffering from extremely urgent conditions like a heart attack are always treated immediately, that can mean a long wait for others. he hopes this new program will help the hospital track wait times and improve their system. >> 23 minutes, from the time you walk into the door until you see me. why is that? i thinks because we're paying a lot of attention to it. >> only 16% of patients are emergencies, by having wait times available by texts, the hospitals hope to keep patients from going to walk-in clinics. >> from our business aspects, we're in competition with urgent cares. >> restin isn't the only area hospital paying attention to wait times. howard university hospital uses a program called fast track to

separate emergency cases from nonacute patients. so people suffering from things like sprained ankles are set to a different part of the er to free up space for real trauma patients. in maryland, suburban hospital says using electronic medical records has speeded up the time it takes for patients to be admitted, so the overall trip to the er is faster. >> individuals could be more productive doing many more things than sitting in emergency room departments. >> reporter: mike wished he had known ahead of time the wait would be short. >> it would be nice to know, send me a text, they give me a time, i come in, i see the doctor and i'm gone. >> wait times vary greatly at different hospitals, some of the bigger centers in the district are level one trauma centers, meaning the most serious cases are taken there. that can cause long delays for patients with things like broken bones and fevers. our weather forecast, can we

keep this trend going? >> pretty much, yeah. for at least another two days. if you're talking about highs in the 80s, that is. low humidity across the area, the weekend, the big cooldown, i do mean big cooldown, it's on sunday. we're talking about more like early spring temperatures across the area. out there this evening, we have nice june warmth with us across the area. temperatures are running in the 70s after seeing a start today at 59 and a high temperature of 83 degrees, in fact, every day this month of may the high temperature has been above the average of 72 degrees, we're likely to go another three days with a temperature above average. 72 degrees right now, relative humidity stands at 68%. dewpoint at 61, pretty comfortable, with the wind out of the south through the area. temperatures came in at 66, not bad, 65 in martinsburg. get outside, and this is the

temperature change over the last 24 hours, we're up by some 5 to 10 degrees across the area, so yesterday we start -- we started out at 59, tomorrow morning we'll be starting out at 68 degrees, not nearly as cool. you're looking at the upper level winds, the jet stream coming right through the northern tier of states, today it's been towering, a weather front fairly weak. it's been translating into winds across the area. we'll get a little bit of a change in that pattern by sunday, big dip through the mid-atlantic states, that translates to temperatures it again in the mid-60s. high pressure will be easing off do the east, and this cold front will be running through the area tomorrow. a secondary front friday, and that will be a stronger system. there those reports today of hail and winds in the midwest, and storms continuing to fire across areas of ohio. the next 48 hours, we'll get one front in here tomorrow, we'll start with sunshine, we'll have clouds coming our way for the afternoon tomorrow. and maybe an isolated shower or

street cars are making a comeback in the district. the city showed off cars, they in washington decades ago, city officials decided to bring them back to ease air pollution. one of the neighborhoods the street cars will service, the street car system is scheduled to begin running at 2012. millions of people coast to coast bought tickets for the mega millions jackpot last night. only one person had the winner, $266 million to a woman who works in the newsroom at the nbc station in los angeles. her husband recently lost his job. no word on whether she plans to keep hers, but she did show up today. she left early because it occurred to her, wait a minute, what am i doing here? and so she left. >> they're never going to see her again. >> i hope
