the other one is okay. >> we mentioned there were two fatalities. was anyone else killed in a vehicle? >> that's correct. the driver of that vehicle is deceased. >> all right. and, again, we mentioned off the top that a lot of people are biking today, biking to and from work. any idea whether these bicyclists were biking home from work now? >> no, i don't have any information on the bicyclists or where they were going or coming from. other than they were on that bike path right there at 29 and forum when that vehicle left the roadway and struck one of them. >> lee highway, we know, always busy this time of day. the road is closed right now in parts. how long can commuters expect that to last? >> 29 right now is shut down in both directions, which will create a significant traffic issue. so we have several officers in the area right now setting up an alternate traffic pattern which i believe will involve using monument drive.

i don't have the details on what that pattern will be. but my recommendation would be anybody traveling through that area coming home in the next couple of hours, find an alternate way to go home and avoid that area altogether. >> all right. officer shelly broderick. that's lee highway and forum drive. officer, thank you for keeping us up to date. >> thank you. police in washington tonight are investigating the death of a mother found in her apartment. the victim was found dead in her home on fourth street southeast. it's believed she's been dead for several days now. authorities were called to the scene after one of her mentally disabled sons was seen jumping from a second-story window. derrick ward joins us live from d.c. superior court with dalts on this. >> reporter: there have been some significant developments in that and they have brought us here to d.c. superior court. police yesterday arrested 24-year-old christopher martin. he's due to be arraigned here on second-degree murder charges.

it is believed that martin is another son of the victim. police were called to the scene at that apartment building at the 4200 block of southeast street. police were able to talk to the person that went out the window. police entered the apartment and found the body of the woman. she hasn't been positively identified yet nor has the cause of death been publicly released. however, police investigating that case did develop a person of interest. that person has turned out to be christopher martin, who is believed to be the other son of the victim. now, what remains to be seen is the cause of death, the reasons for that death and the circumstances by which a child would kill his parent. apparently that is what these charges are. again, martin is due to be arraigned here in des superior court any minute now. that hasn't yet happened. we'll bring you details as they become available and hopefully that will shed light on a disturbing and bizarre case out

of southeast yesterday. that's where we're live. now back to you. >> derrick ward, derthank you. family, friends and stevie wonder turned out to celebrate the life of a d.c. teenager and city council intern who was murdered earlier this month. wonder performed a song at the funeral today for alante sutton. it was held at allen chapel ame church in southeast. sutton was an intern for district council member michael brown as part of a youth program. brown was among those at today's funeral. >> a sad day but a celebration, too. a celebration of alante's life who was doing everything right. that's really the scary part about this violence. you can do everything right and still be touched by it. we just have to do a much better job of embracing our young people. >> bun person has been charged with sutton's death. councilman brown says he's going to work with sutton's family to make sure alante's life will be

memorialized. and a coach with a professional hockey team is facing sex abuse charges. it happened last night at the mayflower. police believe mark hardy and a relative were out drinking and returned to their hotel room to sleep. the victim told police she awoke to find hardy inappropriately touching her. he was arrested. he is a current assistant coach with the l.a. kings. this photo is from the nhl website. the team had no comment on the charges tonight. police are stepping up security near a middle school in annapolis after two girls said they were approached by a suspicious man. the girls are students at bates middle school. one girl said on may 1st while walking along boxwood road, a man in a car asked if she wanted to go for a ride. two weeks later, the other student said she was walking to a school bus stop on fairfax road when a man grabbed her arm.

she managed to pull away and the suspect ran off. in both case, the suspect was driving a small dark blue sedan, possibly a honda with tinted windows. a rebound on wall street. the dow industrials closed up 125 points at 10,193. the nasdaq up 25 points at 2,229 and the s&p 500 up. the dow and the s&p 500 are on track to have their worst performance in may since 1962. the nasdaq is having its worst performance in may in a decade. it has been a wild couple of days of ups and downs and it's created financial panic. john schriffen joins us with more. >> just when it seemed like investors were dipping their toes back in the stock market waters, wall street gets hit with a week like this.

investors aren't sure whether to stay in or pull their money out. after three days of losses, the stock market opened once again in the red. the dow started the day under 10,000 points. >> i'm very worried. i'm not confident at all. i think that the markets are reflecting what people have felt in their hearts for a long time. >> reporter: financial advertiser with morgan stanley says much of the turbulence on wall street this week are due to the many economic problems in europe sparked by greece teetering on the verge of bankruptcy. >> the banks had problems and the united states came in, the fed came in and pumped money into the system. europe had to do the same thing. there was a lot of reluctance there to do it. >> reporter: the market did rebound after germany voted to pitch in and share the nearly $1 trillion price tag to bail out the euro. but with all the market volatility, some investors here at home have lost confidence. >> i definitely think about retirement. i'm a bit hesitant to think i'd ever be able to retire.

but here's to hoping. >> reporter: beyond hoping, everyone should be planning for retirement, especially young people ages 25 to 35. >> absolutely take care of your roth i.r.a. if you can do that. go to any plans you can in your company, put money away. i think everybody who's still working needs to save a minimum of 10% of whatever they make. >> reporter: are you getting close to retirement age? >> yes. >> reporter: do you have a strategy? >> yes. >> reporter: may i ask what that is? >> try to get rich. that's a good thing. >> reporter: if you're close to retirement and you don't hit the lotto, it's not too late but you have to be realistic. >> those are the folks that really have to analyze where they are, how much do they need to spend, how much do they have coming in? how do they make up the difference? >> reporter: mcintyre says now is not the time to panic and pull your money out of the stock market. everyone asks him, what's going

mission -- will be carried out in full. >> norman manetta is the first asian pacific american to hold a cabinet position. the florida boaters found wednesday clinging to a cooler after three days in the water are now telling their story to thr. their life preservers were washed away and they grabbed the only thing they could find, which was the cooler that had been aboard the boat. after three days in the water, local fishermen spotted the trio and alerted the coast guard. the three said they thought of family and who would help them survive.

>> i wasn't prepared to let my daughter grow up without her mother. she's definitely my driving point in order to get back home. >> all three were repeatedly stung by jellyfish while in the water and also suffered from dehydration. doctors say they are recovering quickly. fairfax county police are warning residents about an unusually high number of copperhead snakes that have popped up this spring. they can often be hard to spot. >> reporter: this is a snake to look out for. these copperheads can be found all over virginia. >> as it gets warmer, they'll start dispersing. the males will start to court females, trail them and court them. that will happen through the late spring. >> reporter: in the last few weeks, three copperheads have bitten people and at least one dog in river bend park, the

hunter mill area of reston. it's a problem peaking way too early partly because copperheads blend so well with their surroundings. >> the color is very much like leaf litter. if they're in leaf litter, they're very hard to spot. if they're out on bare ground, they're easier to see. >> reporter: while the venom is poisonous, it's rarely lethal. if you're walking, hiking or otherwise enjoying nature, keep your eyes to the ground. >> just look for places where they can hide. they might be under logs, under rocks. just be very careful. kind of scan the area you're going to walk in. police in frederick county, mad, are trying to determine how a woman accidentally crashed her vehicle onto the roof of a house. it happened on harmony road in myersville last night after 8:00.

police tell us she drove off the steep driveway and on to the roof. the rear of the vehicle remains on the ground. her 10-year-old son was in the vehicle with her. both were taken to a hospital but both are expected to be okay now. no one in the home was injured. the weekend is upon us, it is warm outside and sunny and we are hopeful for the same for the next two days. what do you think? >> that's a lot. that's a big order. well, a little bit of sunshine. it's not going to be cool, like in the 60s. remember a couple of days back, we were stuck in the 60s where it seemed like we were never going to get out of it? but the weekend is going to be unsettled. talking about rain for both days of the weekend. but it's not going to rain every hour of the weekend. let's start with what's taking place right now. 83 is the temperature. we have high clouds that have already moved in.

83 with a dew point temperature of 52 degrees. winds currently out of the south at 8 miles per hour. the dew point temperatures, those have been cooperating. they're in the low 50s. so still comfortable out there. it's when you get into the upper 50s and low 60s where it starts to feel a little sticky. chantilly, virginia, 81 degrees. winds out of the southeast. solomon at 78 degrees. one of our cool spots. 82 up to the north in mt. airy with a light wind out of the south. let me show you where there are storms talg place. these are associated with the next weather system moving this way for saturday afternoon. up around ohio and areas of indiana, storms pep ring the area. does include north of chicago right now headed toward detroit, michigan. and we've got more storms peppering the south. montgomery, alabama, as well as around atlanta, georgia. there's a severe thunderstorm watch that's been issued down there until 8:00 p.m. for areas around tuscaloosa, montgomery,

even east toward macon. let me take you now to texas and show you some storms that rolled through yesterday. i believe we've got the video for that. this is north texas. mid lothian where yet again they've been getting more severe weather. a lot of slow-moving thunderstorms produced several tornadoes yesterday. this is some home video that was taken where there were several other funnel clouds as well spotted in the area. midlothian, texas. where's the storm system right now? it's making its way through areas of arkansas. we've got the warm front that extends out from it. it's going to slowly make its way toward the east. i don't think we're going to have any severe weather around here but we might get an isolated thunderstorm or two. best chance is sunday. that's when we've got the best chance of getting some rain around here, too, from first thing sunday up until about noontime sunday. the other thing we're going to be seeing is a pattern change. we've got the jet stream, that river of air far to the north

over the eastern half of the nation. it's going to take a little dip for the weekend. that means unsettled weather. means cool temperature, too. but then for the midportion of next week and leading up to memorial day, that jet stream is going to be well up into canada. that means we're going to see highs anywhere from about 85 to 89. perhaps even 90 degrees as we hit friday and then saturday and sunday for memorial day weekend. the other thing we're going to keep our eye on is low pressure making its way through the bahamas. by tuesday night, it could get close to the outer banks of north carolina and south carolina. and that system might have a lot of high wind and heavy rain with it. we've got hurricane season coming up june 1st. it's going to be a little tropical in nature. i don't think it's going to be a named storm. but hurricane season, it could be an active one. the forecast from tropical prediction center comes out on thursday. i'll be giving you those details. next 48 hours here, more cloud cover moving in. we're dry for the overnight

period. first thing tomorrow morning, too, if you're wondering what time the rain is going to start, about 3:00 or 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. we have a 30% chance to see some showers, maybe a pop-up thunderstorm near the water. and then same thing for the first half of sunday up until about 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. on sunday. could be looking at some showers moving through and then slowly maybe some of the clouds will get out of here. it's not going to be a complete washout for the weekend. but our real wet period will come early sunday. so here's your forecast for the evening. comfortable, high clouds. dropping from 82 to 75 degrees with a southwesterly light wind. by tomorrow morning, we're comfortable, 59 to 62. but certainly probably not as much sunshine as what all of us want. wendy has a frown over there. high temperature for tomorrow into the 70s. not quite 84, 85 like we had today. but there's only a 30% chance that we could have some showers around the area. we up that chance to 60% by

paths when the birds are chirping and it's quiet and relaxing. clears my head in the morning. >> reporter: thousands of people left their cars at home and commuted by bicycle today. it's an annual event that is gaining in popularity. with an extensive system of trails in the area and more and more dedicated bike lanes, cyclists say riding to work has gotten easier. >> it is getting a lot easier to ride your bikes. cars are a little bit more sensitive to bikes on the road than they used to be five or ten years ago. it's a breeze to get down here now. and the bike lanes have been an added improvement. >> reporter: in the district they're putting the finishing touches on new bike lanes downtown, including a stretch along pennsylvania avenue. transportation officials wanted to formally opened the lanes today but decided to hold off to tweak the configuration to make them safer. >> when looked at it, on certain

if you have a fear of bridges, turn away. this one is wobbling in russia. authorities have closed it down. strong water currents triggered by melting snow loosened one part of the bridge's vertical supports. get this, it's only been open since october and cost more than $80 million to build. this week, it could be a turning point for the oil disaster in the gulf of mexico. within the next few days, crews will shoot heavy mud and cork into the broken well to try to stop the oil from continuing to gush out. meanwhile, globs of thick crude are starting to wash up on beaches in louisiana. grand isle, a popular tourist spot, has now been closed and the government is putting together a team to figure out just how much oil is actually flowing into the gulf. jay gray once again in venice,

louisiana, to tell us about this. jay, what does it mean that it's now appearing in grand isle? that's got to be just completely disheartening for the people there. >> reporter: the governor said it's the worst possible scenario. it's what they feared the worst, the oil and the thick oil. not talking about sheen or tar balls. it's moving into the coastline. they've closed the beaches at grand isle as you talked about for cleaning purposes. they're concerned that more is on the way that's coming from underneath the surface, that it's been pushed down by the chemical dispersants and is rolling into the marshlands the wetlands and the beach areas. very frustrating. just as frustrating, within the last hour, we've learned from bp that that top kill procedure to try and kill the leak will be postponed again. was supposed to be late sunday, maybe monday. now tuesday at the earliest but more likely a bit later next wake. that's enraging people across

the coast. they're very frustrated and want to know why someone can't get this oil flow to stop. there's a huge concern as it moves close tore the shoreline that it's getting into the estuaries and the area of the wildlife. they want people to know when the oil gets shut off, that this is far from over. >> did they give any reason why they have to delay it? what's the problem? >> reporter: at this point, it's the same thing. it's never been done before. never done at this depth and they're trying to get their heads and hands around what it's going to take to get the leak stopped. you can understand that. they're dealing with a situation they don't have hands-on availability. they have to use robotics. they've never been in a situation like this. but it's been over a month is what a lot of people will counter with here. >> okay, jay gray, again, thank you for telling us about this growing -- continuing

we begin this half hour with an update on our top story. two people are dead after a bizarre accident involving an suv and a bicyclist in fairfax county this evening. police say the driver of the suv left route 29, went into the woods and hit a cyclist on a bike path. this was near the intersection of forum drive. the cyclist and the driver of the suv both killed. police don't know why the suv left the road. lee highway is closed while they investigate. jackie bensen is on the scene and is on the phone. >> reporter: this was just a sudden, strange and absolutely terrible accident. it happened on a bike path that's adjacent to the fair

faction fax county government center. it was shielded from the road, shielded from lee highway by trees but yet at some point we've learned, the suv driver for unknown reasons crossed two lanes of traffic, jumped the median, crossed two more lanes of traffic, drove onto this asphalt bike path trail and kill add bicyclist. we are hearing and this is unconfirmed that this bicyclist was about 17 or 18 years old. at that point, the suv continues on a second bicyclist. the suv continued plowing forward. it hit a tree and that killed the suv driver. we may have mentioned this earlier, today is bike to work day. in looking at the way this scene looked here, it's a recreation path. likely he and the girl he was out there were just enjoying this beautiful afternoon, taking a bike ride when a sudden and

unimaginable tragedy struck here. again, a bicyclist, young man believed to be in his late teen, is dead, as is the driver of the suv. fairfax county police are on the scene here. lee highway is closed as they continue to investigate just what happened here. when we get new details, we'll bring them to you. >> one quick question. you just drove in there. is traffic a mess? >> reporter: it's dicey. people are trying to get home. route 29 is a big, big commuter area. fairfax county police are doing their best putting people at many intersections to divert them before they get here. so people will find closures in a large, widespread area around the fairfax county government center here this afternoon. >> thank you, jackie. coming up in this half hour, riddick bowe shares his story about losing millions. officials from facebook admit the site has been giving

out private information about users and that's against the site's own policy. and we'll have the bitter truth behind the divorce of tiger woods and his wife, elin. welcome back, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> and i'm wendy rieger. >> we are a warning tonight for drivers who use the inner loop of the wilson bridge this weekend. that part of the beltway just west of telegraph road in alexandria will be reduced to just one lane for road repairs. officials there are predicting miles-long back-up, up to 15 miles long, in fact. news4's julie carey joins us now from alexandria with more. sounds like a nightmare of a weekend ahead. >> reporter: i have two simple words for anybody thinking about crossing the wilson bridge from maryland into virginia on to the inner loop this weekend -- steer clear unless you like getting caught up in the gridlock. there are so many patches in this section of the beltway's inner loop, it looks like a concrete quilt.

before the latest patching, the potholes below blew out multiple tires. there's a replacement bridge under construction as part of the new telegraph road interchange. but officials decided they can't keep patching until it's ready next fall. >> as soon as you put the patch down, it pops off. >> reporter: the makeover starts about 9:00 tonight as the inner loop is narrowed to one lane. the old concrete will be ripped down to the rebar and concrete poured into a new slab. the lane restrictions could last until 5:00 monday morning. so here's the advice to motorists -- >> stay away is our mantra this weekend. we're going to shrink the inner loop of the beltway down to a single lane. whenever you do that, it equals back-ups. >> reporter: electronic signs warn drivers coming south from baltimore to take the beltway

west over the american legion bridge. but even if 40% of traffic is diverted, back-ups could stretch 10 to 15 miles. this cab driver who works night cans see it now. >> wow. it's going to look like midnight or 2:00 in the morning, going to look like rush hour. >> reporter: travelers trying to pass through might face the biggest problem. many who live near the beltway already avoid it. >> i work in falls church and i do not get on the beltway. i go service roads all the way. >> reporter: you need a score card to keep track of all these northern virginia construction projects. what's going on behind me is the last phase of the woodrow wilson bridge project. that should all be completed by 2013. back to you, wendy. >> thanks, julie carey. it's going to be a tough weekend for anyone who uses the chain bridge. the entire span is going to be shut down all weekend starting at 9:00 tonight. crews have been working to restore the bridge for the past

year and this weekend, they'll finally remove the concrete barrier, repave the deck and restripe those lanes once the bridge reopens monday morning, all three lanes will finally be open once again. it's been a big week in politics. and david gregory from "meet the press" join us now. you've got some developing news. republican rand paul of kentucky with major tea party backing behind him this week, is one of your guests. >> that's right. just this afternoon, he canceled the appearance. we're trying to get him to reconsider that. it's fairly unprecedented. only happened a few times in the program's history that somebody commits to come on and then cancel friday afternoon. this is not happening in a vacuum here. he's had a tough week, has rand paul, doing interviews where he's talked about his view of limited government and the civil rights act and taking issue with the government telling a private business what to do even if it came to discrimination, though he is opposed to discrimination

in any form, he's pointed out. it's been a rocky few days for him as to whether he's ready for politics. >> he's not a politician. >> he's not a politician. but he wants to be a united states senator. and so he's canceling this appearance which we think is unfortunate which i think will raise a lot of eyebrows among those following the race in kentucky and beyond. it's interesting, somebody on my staff put together -- found a quote from him about national television appearances and how important they are and that the number one way to raise your profile is persuade people that you're electable. but he's revising that after what has been a pretty tough week. it's worth pointing out, politics is a rough game. and he hasn't won anything yet. he won a primary. he hasn't won the election. he's saying he's very tired and wants to take sunday off. i think it comes after a tough week. >> his remarks have gotten a lot of traction. democrats are jumping all over

this. a lot of people are pointing to the tea party, which i mentioned backed him earlier as we know. and he is the son of ron paul, we should mention. >> yeah. the comments have gotten a lot of attention because they're least a distraction. they are beyond -- they are certainly beyond the mainstream even in conservative circles. republicans aren't very happy with him, republican party has difficulties with african-americans and hispanics. talking about the civil rights act isn't something that washington republicans are interested in the party doing right now. they want the focus on the other things he's talking about, how high the debt is and how washington needs to deal with that. >> has michael steele made a comment -- >> no, not that i have seen. obviously civil rights groups have. but we'll have sestak also on the program.

brands of condoms to make them more appealing to young people. tom sherwood joins us with that story. >> reporter: it's a key part of its safe-sex campaign. it wants people to use the condoms it hands out. >> this is the ever-popular magnum. >> reporter: the trojan gold condom was the preferred choice in a recent survey of sexually active young people. >> the condoms that the d.o.h. offers in schools were not a brand that they recognized nor that they trusted. >> reporter: there are all sorts of condoms. the city was mainly passing out the durex brand. but it switched. >> we look at the difference between the durex and the trojans, there's no difference in the quality or the size. it's really around what the youth know and trust and will use. >> there are the magnums. >> reporter: at the whitman walker clinic, switching condom

and riddick bowe dominated the sport of boxing in the '90s. all three have fallen on hard times. from champ to prison to bankruptcy. bowe has spent the last decade trying to figure out his life after boxing. and now, he seems to be headed in the right direction. this was riddick "big daddy" bowe in his prime. thanks to his trilogy of fights with evander holyfield, he wrapped up a remarkably bizarre career with a 43-1 record. his main motivation was also his biggest fear. >> well, i think the biggest fear that i have is losing. people around me say, well, i knew he couldn't do it. i don't want to hear that mess after a fight. i think i'm more afraid of losing than anything else. >> reporter: that was riddick bowe in 1992. little did he know that he would

lose everything. today riddick bowe is fighting foreclosure. you were just too nice? >> yeah, my people, five houses, i give them money each month. and then you have a lot of people swindling you. you live and you learn. >> reporter: bowe brought a lot of these problems on himself. he spent 18 months in prison. shortly after his release, he filed for bankruptcy. >> everything went crazy. >> reporter: what happened? >> everything fell apart. >> reporter: bowe's property in ft. washington, maryland, used to be a well-manicured oasis. things have changed. the 26-car garage used to be almost loaded. now it sits almost empty.

the 4,000 square feet training center, unused for years. >> i haven't been back in it. >> reporter: why not? >> i'm a fighter. and then one thing, it makes me sad because i'm not doing what i truly love. to avoid that particular feeling, i just stay in the house. >> reporter: never prettier than the night he first beat holyfield in this very ring. that was the best you've ever been. >> yes. >> reporter: bowe's trying to dig himself out of financial ruin. his only source of income is here -- l.a. boxing in northern virginia where he's a trainer. >> are you ready? all right, then.

a special salon to help recovering addicts turn their lives around. >> reporter: one of the most glamorous women in the world knows that beauty is much more than skin deep. the singer and her mom launch add school this year giving recovering addicts a second chance. >> i came here to get myself together, my behaviors and stuff like that and my drug use. >> reporter: the idea for this salon came in 2007 while beyonce was preparing for her role as etta james, the legendary blues singer hooked on heroin. she met with former addicts at the phoenix house. that's when she realized something was missing. >> here they provide carpentry, catering computer and counseling classes, all amazing programs. but i felt like they needed something else geared towards women. and something that will teach them skills that will give them hope even after the phoenix house. >> reporter: but these day, the cosmetology center doesn't only
