in fairfax, a block from the government center. the driver of the suv died making the investigation a tricky one. jackie benson is near the scene with more. jackie? >> reporter: doreen, the bike path where the crash happened is a popular recreation area. the community is in shock tonight. it happened so fast. a 17-year-old boy riding a bicycle on a bike path that is well protected from the road was struck and killed by an suv. the driver also died. it happened just after 4:00 p.m. at intersection of lee highway, next to fairfax county government center. witnesses told police the dodge durango heading north on lee highway for an unknown reason it hopped the median on a diagonal toward the bike path. >> the suv came into contact with what we believe a juvenile male on one bicycle. unfortunately, tragically, the teenage bicyclist is deceased on the scene as well as the driver

of the suv. >> reporter: the suv also brushed past a 14-year-old girl. >> the female bicyclist in front of other bicyclist, the suv missed her and struck the male bicyclist. >> reporter: the driver was killed when the suv slammed with tremendous force into a tree. two men who own a business across the street heard the crash. >> -- especially, a business here, and i never see such an accident. >> reporter: fairfax police closed off the area for hours trying to determine what caused the crash. they will investigate whether the driver, a 31-year-old manassas man had a condition or alcohol or distracted driving contributed. >> neither of the two people who died have been identified. investigators would look to talk

to anyone who saw the suv in the minutes before the crash. doreen, jim, back to you. >> jackie benson, thank you. prosecutors believe a woman found dead in her apartment in southeast washington was killed by one of her two sons. court documents identified the son as christopher martin. police say he suffers a mental illness. his mother was found dead yesterday in the apartment they shared on 4th street southeast. she had been stabbed at least 10 times. shortly before officers went inside that house, martin's mentally challenged brother jumped from a window. investigators believe he may have been attacked as well. wall street rallied this afternoon, experts are taking a wait-and-see approach. the dow fell below 10,000 during early trading before recovering in a late surge to finish 125 points ahead. yesterday's losses though mark the first correction since the start of the bull market more than a year ago.

meaning stocks hat s have lost . treasury department settled on an investment bank to prepare general motors stock for a public offering. the government hopes to recoup some of the $50 billion in bailout it gave gm with the ipo. the treasury department picked up a 60% stake in the company when gm went into bankruptcy last year. lane closures on a stretch of one of the busiest highways in the area that could mean huge backups this weekend. closures begin at 9:00 on the virginia side of i-95, wilson bridge. the inner loop west of telegraph road in alexandria is down to one lane. so that a crumbling section of pavement can be repaired. officials are predicting backups of 10 to 15 miles in the area. the lane restrictions could last until 5:00 monday morning. before you head outside this

a car ended up on the roof of a house in frederick county, maryland, startling the family inside. police say the driver lost control on the steep driveway in myersville last night and drove right on to the roof.

the driver and her 10-year-old son were injured. they're both expected to be okay. nobody inside was injured. police waited until this morning to move the vehicle. the oil spill in the gulf of mexico is making a smelly mess of some vacation spots in southern louisiana. a seven-mile public beach closed to day after thick gobs of oil washed ashore. until recently only an oily sheen had begun trickling into the resort area of grand isle. but the situation is expected to get much worse. engineers for british petroleum say it will be at least tuesday before they can take another shot at stopping that oil liking underwater. the process known as top kill involves shooting heavy drilling mud into the well. >> face book is about to make changes to its privacy policy. the company sent out an e-mail statement, anounnouncing it wil

white ribbons to remember a murdered classmate. the white ribbons handed out in memory of yardley love who will get a posthumous degree. found dead in her apartment off campus three weeks ago. her ex-boyfriend, a uva student charged in her death. white ribbons will memorialize a virginia tech student who disappeared from uva ground after a concert. found dead in january. officials at a school in prince william county, virginia, are on alert after somebody stole a computer drive with all students personal information. the principal of lake ridge middle school, in woodbridge, sent out letters to parents to day, informing them of the theft. officials say that drive included student names, phone numbers, and bus numbers, as well as information used to contact parents in an emergency. the school will hold a meeting for concerned parents on monday night. 750 million dollars, the
