soaking storms blew through the area today, causing some flooding, some road closures even downed power lines. good evening, everyone, i'm craig melvin. many of the showers continue across the metro area now. straight to meteorologist chuck bell in the storm center with the latest. chuck? >> yes, indeed. a lot of rain in some spots, very little in others. national airport hasn't had an inch of rain this weekend with, some of the places western fairfax, eastern loudoun county, more than three inches of rain over the course of the weekend. live doppler, you get a sense of the heavy, steady showers have are come toon end temporarily. a broader view shows the spin of the atmosphere is taking showers across northern maryland

westbound in virginia, the showers in metro d.c. are headed toward charlottes view. good news. the heaviest rain is behind us, a lot of sogginess out there, a soggy sunday night to go out and do anything. more clouds than rain tomorrow, clouds will be plentiful, no doubt about that. warmer and drier days ahead. when did they get here and how long will they last? that isth in 7-day forecast coming up. >> thanks, chuck. for most, the storms moved through quickly today but dumped a lot of rain in a short amount of time for folks, but loudoun county, route 606 near ever green mill road had to be shut down because it was covered in water. in northwest d.c., the storms were bringing down power lines. these powerlines in particular, the 4800 block of 3rd street. the university of virginia's class of 2010 walked down the mall for graduation today without one of their classmates. yeardley love would have graduated with a government degree today. she was murdered earlier this month and today's ceremonies

classmates who passed this year. and definitely, it was good to have a moment of silence for them and remember them. >> reporter: white rib. >> reporter: s also memorialized 20-year-old virginia tech student morgan harrington. her body was found in albermarle county last october after she disappeared from a concert. we are following a story involving former president bill clinton. an suv van -- that suv van carrying clinton was hit from behind on the parkway in connecticut today. clinton was on his way to deliver a speech at yale. the former president was not hurt. state police in connecticut says that traffic was barely moving because of another accident when someone hit the secret service van. the van continued to yale and clinton made his speech. plainly, some good news from iceland today. scientists say that the volcano is almost completely inactive.

it erupted last month for the first name 200 years and has been spewing lava and ash ever since. iceland's meet orrowlogical office today said it is too early to say the eruption is over but it has kwai yesterday. only steam coming at this point. at its peak, the ash plume shut down airspace for a woke and grounded 10 million travelers worldwide. a new york senator is making a push in congress to ban all of those drop-side cribs after concern they pose a deadly threat to babies. kirsten gillibrand's legislation would make it illegal to make or sell the cribs and outlaw day care cementers and hotels from using the cribs. in come says cases, the crib's drop side detached, creating enough space to suffocate a baby. 32 babies have died in the cribs in the past ten years. bridge drivers will have to wait a few more days for lanes to fully reopen.

ddot ex-specs to finish the work this weekend and open the third lane monday but expected to open a rain tomorrow but rain delayed the crews. commuters will be able to get on the bridge tomorrow morning at 6:30 but only one lane will be open in each direction. all the lanes should be opened by wednesday. oil continues to spread throughout the gulf of mexico and so does the finger pointing on capitol hill. the white house is defending its response to the april 20th explosion of the deep water horizon rig. leading republicans accuse the obama administration of not paying enough attention to the rigs. obama criticized republicans for blocking debate on the bill that related to fines on oil companies. robert gibbs spoke this morning. >> we were activated the moment that this oil rig exploded. this has been on the president's agenda ever since that happened. >> some in washington have tried to seize on this real human tragedy in the gulf to advocate

bob's big boy statue from its base and haul it had away. he put the statue up last night so people could come by and get their pictures taken with it. sarah ferguson, the duchess of york is reportedly devastated after video surfaced showing her agreeing to sell access to her ex-husband. the video appeared on the british tabloid the news of the world it shows the duchess agreeing to have $725,000 wired toon account. she tells an undercover reporter position as a businessman that the money would "open doors." a spokesperson for the duchess has confirmed that it is her on that tape. >> sarah ferguson has struggled

recently in years and called her divorce settlement from the prince stingy, however, the two have remained close friends since their split. a reality show producer wanted for questioning in his wife's death is now back in the united states, bruce beresford redman returned to los angeles county from mexico. yesterday, police in mexico said they could not find him. he had been ordered to stay in mexico ever since his wife's body was found in their cancun hotel room back in april. beresford redmond's lawyer says the producer returned to the united states to be with his children and attend to some personal matters. he has not been charged with a crime. we are just a few hours away from "the apprentice" fin nal loin nbc 4. more word tonight bret michaels will be there. howly fare? all things considered. plus we continue to monitor showers, storms and the chance of flooding for some of you. some drops on the city cam. chuck is standing by with the

evening. very hit or miss. temperatures have remained on the mild side today, 73 current late national airport. the dew points are in the 60s, low to mid 60s, fairly humid. humidity, 71%, light east wind at 7. at national airport now, less than three-quarters of an inch of rain the last 48 hours. other spots not far away seen way more than that dulles just under three inches of rain between yesterday and today. 2 1/2 in frederick, maryland. of an inch in hagerstown, half an inch in martinsburg, annapolis, less than a tenth there less than a quarter into portions of southern maryland. neighborhood network stations, fair fax, virginia, almost two inches today, a little over two inches for the last two days combined. thurmont, maryland, 65 now, an inch and a half of rain today, two inches combined yesterday and today, chantilly, virginia, the big winner, more than three inches of rain today and the reason the weather service did have to briefly issue last flash flood warnings across portions

of frederick -- not frederick but prince william here and parts of loudoun county earlier this afternoon, all the watches and warnings are now gone. the threat for intense flooding at this point is starting to diminish that is welcomed news. little area of low pressure sitting over southern virginia. the heaviest of the rains now moved on towards richmond, partiesburg and norfolk. sunday night showers to deal with. that area of low pressure drifts farther to the south. cloud cover around tomorrow, but less rain than what we have been seeing the last day and a half to two days. high pressure slowly building its way down the eastern seaboard. going to push that limb trough of low pressure further and further down to the south. so tomorrow, a lot of clouds but not too much in the way of rainfall amounts for tomorrow. as we get into tuesday, i think we will finally start to see breaks of sunshine coming back, wednesday, thursday, friday timeframe, a-okay. good weather to head into labor -- memorial day weekend. cloudy and damp, passing showers out there, a little touch of may humidity as well. waking up tomorrow morning,
