on the ninth anniversary of the september 11th terror attacks, the nation pauses to pay tribute to the victims with services at ground zero, the pentagon and in shanksville, pennsylvania. >> we love you. and life has not been the same.

>> good saturday evening, everyone. tonight in new york city a somber tribute marks the place where the twin towers fell. it has become an annual ritual of sorts, as we take a live look. twin beams of light shining high into the night's sky, showing where the world trade center once stood. earlier today, family members read the names of the nearly 3,000 people killed at the world trade center. vice president joe biden also addressed the crowd there. meanwhile, construction continue there. a new tower should be complete by next year's tenth anniversary. president obama spoke at the pentagon after laying a wreath for the nearly 200 that died at that site. he called it hallowed ground. he encouraged everyone to mark the date but practice tolerance. first lady michelle obama

and former first lady laura bush came together at a ceremony in shanksville, today. they spoke with the families of the 40 people on the plane who died there. hijackers wanted to crash that plane into the d.c. area, but passengers fought back forcing the hijackers to crash into a field. >> they remind us not only by how they gave their lives, but how they lived their lives, that being a hero is not just a matter of fate. it's a matter of choice. >> meanwhile, back here in our area, there were several ceremonies to honor the lives lost nine years ago today. some hanged flags, others waived them. some prayed. others shared their story of survival. the demonstrations were different, but their purpose was the same. to remind people to never

forget. >> we need to remind everybody that we have not forgotten what happened on 9/11. >> and so the veteran, his son who's about to join the army and the small friends waved flags at a small intersection in germantown. >> it's fantastic, gives you a good feeling inside. we get a lot of responses from everybody from fire engines, police officers, to every day people who beep and are happy there's some kind of symbol and remembrance. >> in arlington, these buildings were a symbol. in montgomery county, this new fire station that was dedicated saturday, will be a lasting symbol. >> we always put life safety first. putting your life in harm's way is always the thing that comes to mind on this day. >> reporter: roses and a plaque

stop the protesters. hundreds demonstrated near his church in gainesville. many chanted no burning, no hate, not in our city or state. police positioned themselves in front of the church so protesteprotester s could not get too close to the building. an inmate who may be headed to our area. paul palmer was spotted inside a silver 2008 kia spectra with maryland tags. palmer was in jail on attempted murder charges. the bar where a woman had been drinking before hitting and injuring two people is now talking to news 4. their staff is trained to recognize anyone who has had too much to drink. and shamiqua did not appear impaired. her blood alcohol limit was twice the legal limit. the district had advertised happy hour offering unlimited drinks. the d.c. alcohol regulatory

officials in san bruno, california say five people are still unaccounted for after thursday's pipeline explosion. four people were killed 50 more were hurt. some 40 houses were levelled by that blast. about two dozen homes were damaged. the ntsb is now looking at a specific section of pipe. volunteers gave up their saturday to clean up in a storage cemetery in southwest d.c. they cut weeds and mooed the grass atwood lawn cemetery. the cemetery dates back to 1872. branch bruce, the former slave who became the first black u.s.
