more than 30 police officers may have to be pulled off the streets in prince george's county because of a cheating scandal at the department's aining academy. internal documents obtain by the wash post show all cadets who graduated in the class of july 2009 received perfect scores on several comprehensive and mandatory tests. police chief roberto hilton has ordered an investigation. the pt reports the cheating allegations began last year after a cadet complained an instructor had been providing students with answers. the police department is still considering possible impacts on arrests made by the officers in question. firefighters in montgomery county could lose their jobs because of budget cuts. county executive ike leggette said one in ten firefighters could get pink slips if voters reject a new ambulance fee in november. under his plan, 107 fire and rescue positions would be eliminated. voters will decide whether to

flooding and mud slides have killed at least 75 people and left thousands homeless in indonesia. days of torrential downpours have submerged hundreds of homes and destroyed roads and bridges in west papua ovince. in one village a river burst, sweeping residents away and leaving thigh high water behind. more than 2,000 people have sought shelter in government buildings and makeshift camps. indonesia experiences these deadly landslides and flooding evy year. meanwhile in hungary, crews are working the stop a different kind of mud floe. a flood of toxic sludge has already entered se of the country's waterways and could potentially affect all of europe if officials can't stop it. michelle kosinski has that story. >> reporter: parts of western hungary are under a state of emergency because of flooding but we're not justalking about water. we know how damaging that can be. this is a toxic caustic red

the nasdaq was down 19 points to close at 232. the s&p 0 dropped under a point today. closed, put theow within striking distance of 11,000 for the first time since may. the first forecast is out this morning on how much holiday shoppers may be spding this year. while the figures are not that impressive, they are a lot better than the last two holiday seasons. chris clackum has more. with retail sales christmas two years ago, down a disastrous 4%, and then an uptake last year of only .4%, analysts find it easy to avoid being overly optimistic about this year. >> we know that we're comparing ourselves to pretty tough years e last two years. we know that the economy is more stable than it was. >> the national retail federation is expecting to ring up a 2.3% increase in holiday

sales this year. matching the average annual incrse over the last decade. it is a bright projection for retailers, as well as for those looking for work. >> last year in 2009, the retail industry created about a half a million temporary jobs. and every indication we've gotten thus far is that we're going to do that or even better than that this year. >> reporter: retail sale have been up and down all year so finishing stroer, if only slightly stronger,s still better than the alternative. >> retaer cole's plans to increase its hiring by 21% this holiday season. the department store chain expects to hire more than 40,000 worker. that's about 35 employees per store. most of the job will be filled by mid-november. macy's, toys are us, pier 1 and others plan toire more workers.

>> so far today, 60 degrees. tomorrow, 73. >> we'll wait. >> we talked about one more cool day today. we do have that cool day out there right now. very cool and cloudy. but our eather, not too bad. especially when you consider this. take a look at this video out of arizona. the entire state gets about four tornadoes a year. two of them hit today. just to the west of flagstaff, arizona. this one caused a lot of of damage. about 38 mobile homes were actually destroyed from this home. the good news is there were no real injuries but it did produce a lot of damage. and a fairly quick amou of time. they're dealing with more storminess toward the southwest. our area, not bad. look at this shot. this is just gorgeous. the clouds o to the east. sunshine, and blue skies off to the west. right now we're sitting at 60 degrees with the winds out of the westbout 12 miles an hour. it stl feels very cool out there. the temperature are 59 in sterling. 56 in martinsburg, west virginia, and 55 toward

hagerstown, maryland. look at the doppler radar. a couple showers trying to make their way in toward the south and east. we'll zoom in here. this one down around parts of loudoun county. also over toward rock hall and barnsville. then another area showers, light showers just to the west of gaithersburg. we'll continue to watch those between frederick and gaithersburg out there right now. as far as what we're going to be seeing throughout the rest of the day. this area of low essure continues to sit and spin. it isinally starting to move to the east. as it does, things will change for us in a big way. look at the temperatures. 57 in buffalo. 64 in new york. but look back here to the west. 77 in st. louis and in chicago. 72 toward atlanta. all of that warm air will start to move our way as th area of low pressure starts to move off to the north and east. in behind it, nice weather. high pressure building in. and then i think we're just going to see a fantastic stretch of weather right on through the early portioof next week. so what can we expect for this

that protest and whether the marine's father can check on an earlier suit. justices are expected to issue an opinion earlier next year. some u.s. officials have long said the war in afghanistan would not be won through military means. today the "washington post" reports that the taliban and the afghan government have begun secret high level talks over a negotiated end to the war. there have been previous reports of lower level overtures between the two. the afghan president hamid karzai's government announced no high level talks have taken place. this is international walk to school day. the goal is to encourage healthy habits and build awareness about walkable communities. thousandf students and a lot of their parents took up the challenge and walked or biked to school. this is the 13th year the u.s. has tan part in walk to school day.
