ing. right new police are questioning a person with a deadly hit-and-run accident. the person was getting out of a car when she was hit. >> president obama will campaign for maryland governor martin o'malley. we'rearking the ninth anniversary of the war in afghanistan as peace talks in that country begins. news 4 midday begins right now. good morning, everyone and welcome to news 4 midday. i'm barbara harrison. it's thursday, october 7, 2010. now to breaking news from southeast washington. police were called to ballou high school for reports of a large fight. it happened about an hour ago. a d.c. police officer was injured when he or she was sprayed with mace or pepper spray while attempting to break up the fight. police say the injury appears to be minor. no word on arrests or what started the fight. we have a reporter head to the

scene and bring it more when it becomes available. we are following a developing story out of northwest washington. a woman is dead after she was hinear dupont circle by an suv. a vehicle that took off after the accident. police say the victim of struck in the 1300 block ofonnecticut avenue at around 1:30 this morning. officers tracked down the suv that they believe s involved in the accident in chevy chase, maryland. megan mcgrath is live in northwest washington. >> reporter: police were able to track down that suv thanks to information provided to them by a very determined eyewitness. that witness had a bicycle and afr the accident happened he jumped on that bike a began to tail the suv as it fled the scene. he stuck with it long enough to get a tag number. he gav that tag number to police. police tell a lexus suv from a i had rise building in chevy

chas they believe it's involved in a deadly accident. police are questioning the woman they believe was behind the wheel. police say the victim of getting out of this parked mercedes on connectit avenue when she was struck by a black suv. the driver did not stop. the area is home to several bars and restaurants and police say there were a number of eyewitnesses. one of them had a bicycle and began to chase the suv as it fled the scene. police say the witness onhe bike was able to get a tag number. that critical piece of information ultimately led them to the suv in che chase. now police have not released the name of the victim, the woman who was killed in this hit-and-run accident. they have not released any information about the perso that they are questioning in connection with this. now we're hoping to g an update later this morning. back to you. >> and the search is on for

answers after a woman was murdered inside a northern virginia restaurant. it happened inside the 5 t bar and grill on spring garden drive in springfield while people were eating dinner. a man and woman got into an argument when the man pulled out a knife and stabbed the woman before injuring himself. the two knew each other. we're still waiting for a statement from the prince george's county police chief about an alleged cheating andal involving 30 county police officers. th chief cancelled a news conference late yesterday afternoon and then promise ad written statement later in the evening. so far, though, nothing. investigators are trying to determine whether more than 30 officer cheated on test when is they were still cadets. department records sw the cadets had perfect scores on at least 11 tests. measuring basic skills, arrest procedures and how to testify in court. and they included scores from one cadet who didn't even take

afghanistan has a new peace council to help impro relations with the taliban and other insurgent kroups. president ckarzai hoste eed the inaugural session. the u.s. lost 1,200 lives since 2001. there are some brand new subpoenas involving the investigation into john edwards campaign finances. edwards attorney won't say who received the subpoenas. the investigation is focused on allegations that campaign finances were used to take ce of edwards' mistress the. edwards admitted early her this year he father ad child with hunter. thousands are expected to attend the duelling rallies of jon stewart and steven colbert on national mall at the end of the month. stewarthas announced the exact location for his rally to restore sanity. it's in the area of the mall

authorities in utah have released a final ruling in the deaths of actor gary coleman. police say coleman died of natural causes after accidental fall at his home. it happened back in may. according to investigators the autopsy finding matches evidence found on the scene right after the fall. police have now closed the case. there have been numerous legal battles over coleman's estate. the 42-year-old celebrity left more than one will. the washington wizards may soon be no more as a matter of

right now on news 4 midday police believe they found an suv they say hit and killed a woman early this morning in dupont circle. the victim was struck around 1:30 this morning in t 1300 block of connecticut avenue. the officers tracked the vehicle down to chevy chair maryland thanks to a witness on a bycle who wrote down the tag numbers. president obama will campaign with the governor of maryland, martin o'malley at one of the afternoon even in prince george's county. right now peop are gathering at bowie state university for a get the vote out rally. parts of colorado and utah are bracing for storms that left a trail of destruction through arizona. four tornadoes tossed over paed rvs, blew big rigs off

was covered up. tonight d.c. voters in ward 3 can parentally ask questions of vincent gray, the dmocratic mayoral candidate is making himself available at several town hall meetings. he held his first gathering tuesday in ward 5. attendees heard him describe his goals as mayor and got some questions answered too. tonight's town hall meeting arts at 6:00 at saint columbia episcopal can church. we have sme new information about what's believed to be a serial burglar who is targeting homes in northern virgia. number of cases in prince william county is growing. we now know of 14 incidents that happened on monday night into tuesday morning. that's up from the fur that we had reported earlier. police say they investigated seven burglaries, two attpted burglaries and five thefts from vehicles. that on top of the 90 cases already reported in fairfax county. the burglars getting in through unlocked doors and windows. remember to lock your doors and

your windows at night. investigators are trying to figure out who put what appeared to be two pipe bombs in a foreclosed prince george's county home. a real eate agent found the devices in a vacant house in district heights yesterday. a bomb squad spent about four hours making sure they weren't a threat to public. the agent who discovered them said he didn't even realize how dangerous the situation really was. >> mean, when i found it, i didn't even -- it didn't register to me i was in a dangerous situation, really. i was more concerned about whoever might be looking for them wouldn't find it. i didn't know, you know, if somebody might be watching me or that kind of thing. >> investigators set a substance side the devices to a crime lab to determine if those bombs were real orfake. there's aew controversy stemming from last month's standoff at the discovery headquarters in silver spring. some of discovery's neighbors are upset that the company has now closed its public garden.

it's time to checkut the weekend scene. good to see you. we got a few things to talk about today. beginning with the pumpkin pah. what's going. >> that's right. in virginia it's so much more about the whole fall festival. there are lots of oppornities to get out and see corn mazes, take a hey ride and of course take a pumpkin while you're out there. there are two farms that are good at doing this. cox farm in centreville, actually offers a corn maze, there's an opportunity to pick pumpkins and at nightnridays and saturdays through november 7th there are offering scary
