downtown d.c. this afternoon. tom sherwood joins us live from the area with this developing story. >> reporter: the scene here at third a independent enue northwest right from the capital is all back to normal now. with light holiday traffic. the movie making mere had some unexpected real life drama. transformer movies are filled with action. but there's hours of borin set-up for simple trans former three movie scenes now going on in washington. lots of waiting around, waiting, waiting d waiting. then a burst of action. but in one unscripted moment, there was this scene. watch that yellow car captured on a small video camera. it was sideswiped by a real life police car. he thought it w part of the movie. >> i was over there filming the scene. and the police car must have drove through, not to an emergencor something.

the car did not see them and they just hit head on. >> i saw the wreck. i thought it was part of the movie. did you? >> yeah. at first i did. and then obviously it wasn't. >> reporter: the real life wreck shut down production at third and independence but transformer iii will continue shooting all week here in downtown washington and part of arlington. >> pretty exciting. i guess th're filming all week. an opportunity for some locals and tourists seeing a movie ing produced on the east coast. we don't generally get to see that. >> reporter: was it fun for that moment? >> yeah. we talked to people all over the world them don't know what transformers are either. the lady said, do we have t pay? but yeah. it's exciting. a day off. the weather is good. yeah it was pretty much fun. >> reporter: even without real life wrecks, movie making is a big deal in the nation's capital. >> they spend about a half million a day in the city. a big ew. they're staying in our hotels. they're eating in our restaurants. they're purchasing spies from the distct.

party. they were headed to a nearby part. police say as they went to cross rockville pike, that's when it happen. that's when they were struck. police say they were struck by this acura car. this car that police said went on for about a block and a half before it returns to the scene. now lice gave the driver of that car a field sobriety test. and a breathalyzer test as well. so alcohol was a factor in the accident. >> yes, it was. >> reporter: after the accident, ishere evidence that the driver continued on for about a block and a half before he came back to the scene? >> that's what witnesses reported to us, yes. >> reporter: so if alcohol was involved and there is evidence the driver did leave the scene for a while, how come that driver is not in custody now? >> in cases where there is a death and we do this in depth

the next phase starts tuesday. >> aig week here. >> reporter: tomorrow all four lane of northbound i-495 will shift left over route 123. once drivers cross chn bridge, they'll shift back to the right to tie in with the existing beltway. >> we were here several months ago to take down the 49 south bridge over 123. we're back. >> reporter: demolishing the bridge will shut it down under the beltway from friday night through early monday morning. several ramps around the bridge project will be shut down temporarily. but this ramp that leads on to 495 north will b shut down for nearly two years. that means drivers will have to make a left at this temporary traffic light instead. virginia's department of transportation insists it is all in the nail of progress. right now you have two primary entrances. route 7 and route 123. by late 2012 when the hot lanes project is finished, there will be two new entrances which

the first of the trapped miners out by midnight tonight or early tomorrow morning. crews worked today to reinforce thhole that was drilled to bring those men to safety. kerry sanders has the latest. >> reporter: all the pieces o the puzzle are now falling into place. the hole, that shaft that has been drilled down to the men. it is now shrouded with a black tarp. the doctor who has been working with the 33 trapped miners said for the last week, he's been working on putting them thugh incredible stress so each of the men can come up and no matter what they deal with, they'll be able to handle it. the doctor says they're now all ready. >> as soon as they put one foot out of the cage, they will be nearly taken to the zone that we have called triage which in this zone, they will receive first-aid. immedie first-aid. and they will be able to make it in terms of their medical

here because our weather has been so nice. abundant sunshine. temperature into the 80s. the high temperatures today with 88 degrees. now moving in night, it will be a pretty nice night. the low this morning was 62. the record high today was 90, set back in 1919. just amazing how close to that record we did come during the day. a very warm day today. temperature close to 20degrees above average. live digital doppler radar. nothing to show you around our area. just to the north as we widen out, you can see some showers and thunderstorm. entering portions of west virginia. that's a frontal boundary that will continue to make its way in toward our area into the day morrow. so we can't ru out a stray shower or thunderstorm into tomorrow. i think a better chance tomorrow during afternoon one or two of those storms may actually be on the strong side as well. so what are we seeing temperaturewise? we'll continue to see temperatures about 90 -- about 80 tomorrow. high pressure stil dominating.
