today we begin with breaking news. after spending more than two months trapped neerlt half a mile underground, the first five of33 chilean miners have been rescued. round the clock efforts are under way as we speak as rescuers work to bring the remaining men back aboveground and home to their loved ones. nbc key sanders has our story. >> reporter: success. it's working. the trapped miners, all 33 of them, lined up coming to the surface. the first one came up after being down low for 69 days. then the second one came to the surface after being down for, because it went into another day, 70 days. and look how excited he was. he presented rocks to the president, to the other engineers to led this effort to

save them, rocks that the entombed thenown below. the hugs, the ears, the emotion, the thrills and the cheer of success of what so many thought was impossible now unfolding here in chile. kerry sanders, nbc news. back in washington, a historic decision for gay rights after a federal judge ordered the.s. military to stop enforcing its controversial don't ask, don't tell policy. tuesday's landmar ruling has effectively removed a ban on openly gay u.s. troops that's been in place for the past 17 years, including a request that the government disband and all actions under the policy. the obama administration is lifting the six-month moratorium on deep wter oil drilling in the gulf of mexico. the moratorium was imposed after the bp oil disaster that claimed 1 lives and spilled millions of

barrels of oil into the gulf. the interior secretary sa significant progress had been made in reducing the risks associated with deep water drilling. the administration h been under heavy pressure to lift the moratorium on grounds that it had thrown workers out of their jobs and hurt e economy. >> now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. in north carolina, the table turned on a greedy robber. the thief what is was so distracted stuffing money in his pockets, he put his gun don, handing it over to t quick thinking clerk. the suspt got away, but police are looking for him. a missouri man is lucky to be alive. he was inspecting a sewer when the line he was attached to snapped. rescuers found him and pulled him to safety an hour later. was now suffering from

beginning. >> we've got up to33 to get to. so we'll keep waiting and watching. >> i think it's a reunion show every single time. let's talk about what's going on in the weather. it's quiet over the lower 48. we are watching hurricane paula in the caribbea this is one of the smallest hurricanes we've ever seen. a very tiny storm. it's intense, b tiny. right now, it's as close as it's going to get to cozumel and cancun. it's going to be more or less approaching the western tip of cuba as we go throughout the nexcouple of days. it's a category 2 storms, should weaken to a category 1. it should dissipate in a hurry. we still have to watch south florida. the key is down the wards miami. you'll get some of the wet weather from this, not so much the wind, but the rain. we have shower activity heading intoeorgia, alabama, mississippi, maybe a shower or two today.

welcome to news 4 today. i'm eun yang. i'm aaron gilchrist in for joe krebs. sit wednesday, october 13th. we've been monitoring these li pictures. the first many emotional moments happened just after 11:00 last night. that was the very first escue. the capsule was raised 11:15 our time. so far five miners have now been rescued. they were each greeted by the chilean president and their families there. here in washington, hundreds of people gathered to watch the rescue from the chilean embassy. >> tracee wiins is live there
