well, right now it is right around areas of eastern virginia and it will be intensifying, not weakening as it makes its way up the coast. with the north westerly wind and a clearing sky, it is just that. the wind that will really start picking up. we could see some gusts around here of 25 to about 30 miles per hour. look at the temperatures now throughout the area. we're at 60 degrees currently. 55 in hagerstown. cool air moving in the first time we've been under 50 since may 11th. that rain now ending. but with the wind picking up, not just for tomorrow but even part of our weekend which we'll talk about. as we get some sunshine back in here. jim? pat? >> veronica, thank you. there was a large security presence today at d.c.'s department of public works after wednesday'shooting left a long time employee dead. and there are new security measures in place at the site. tracee wilki was there as

ployees went back to work. >> spot lights running on generators. one of the first things workers approaching the public works site noted. >> it's a long time coming. i'm glad it's out here. >> reporter:t the front gate, an armed protective service officer is checking i.d.s of employees entering the facility. this all follows yesterday's deadly shootin of 51-year-old rry hutins. here at the dpw yard. witnesses say around 6:15 yesterday morning, a shooter dressed in a dpw uniform opened fire, spreading more than 20 shot at the government site shooting and killing hutchins and injuring another employee who is expected to surve. returning back to work and to the scene of this shocking crime isn't easy for hutchins' co-workers. >> very, very frightened. for other employees that work here. >> reporter: while there's no telling if additional security

could have changed yesterday's events, workers say the could have helped. >> that's how it should have been at the beginning. a guard should have been here from day one. but that's how they got the security. security comes to guard the trucks in the evening when all the workers are gone. >> reporter: the councilmember said sterday, he wants to see security at all government offices and facilities examined across the board, not just here. heould like to see more permanent changes made. i'm tracee wilkins, news4. >> news4 has learned that security at the department of public works has been a known issue for months now. pat collins will have a live report coming up on that part of the styt 5:00. sunday will mark one year since virginia tech student morgan harrington was abducted and murdered. harrington disappeared after going to a metallica concert a the university of virginia. she got separated from her friends and called them to say she would find a ride home. her body was found three months later in a remote farmer's field

there is discouraging news on two economifronts today. jobless claim are up and home foreclosures set a record. at the same time, there is concern that the investigation into pt bank foreclosures could hurt the economy. steve handelsman has the latest. >> reporter: more americans t of work as a surprise but jobless claims rose last week by 13,000. company still aren't hiring, and teachers were hard hit. local government cut the most jobs in 28 years. >> the pain of our economic devastation has been spread wide. it is deep. >> reporter: anwhile, home foreclosures set a record. 288,000 since july. a millio u.s. families could be evictedhis year. >> there is a lot of confusion in the marketplace right now

>> we're not in terrible shape, at least coming out of virginia headed for the maryland side of things. let's take a look. oh, well, all right. let's start off on the capital beltway as i was mentioning. it will be fine coming from virginia but let's cruise rauchb around. here's the pace on the inner loop. it continues vy slow as you make your approach to old georgetown, toward connecticut avenue, inching along. then the outer loop starts to slow. this is still inner loop. here, that's t outer loop you're seeing in the foreground. inching along, an accident. that blocks the lane. as we continue our inner loop commute, the bad newscontinues. here's the pace beyond new hampshire avenue. making your way around green belt. th pace continues around toward kennel worth avenue. beyond this, it does improve for drivers. out of virginia along 95. mainline is picking up some volume into newington but hov is free and clear.

coast and into new england that really willear the worst of the storm here. you can see a little bit of clearing through the area. 60 is the temperature so it feels like a day in early november. and notice the wind out of the northwest at 13 miles per ur. ittarts making its way up the coast. during t overnight, i think we're going to see some clearing taking place. i've got us going mostly clear by 11:00 with the temperature really droing off. 49 degrees in town by 11:00 p.m. outlying areas in the mid 40s. then in the low 40s and upper 30s by tomorrow morning. the morning temperature at 7:00 a.m. here's a look at the clearing. take a look at all those areas eastern wesvirginia through rappahannock county, green county, madison county.

we are clearing out. the storm is moving northward. you can see the moderate and heavier rain. down tosalisbury, and then there's more push to the north and east. for washington, you picked up an inch and a half of rain. your temperature now, 60 degrees. a little cooler patch but with over two inches of rain, of course, those have been the locations through southern maryland thatreally have gotten hammered with quite a bit of rain with the last couple storms. up around areas of new york you can see the wind gusts up to 20 miles per hour here. on the back side of that system that the winds will start picking up as it races on to the north. your futurecast over the next 48 hours. some cool conditions for us.

windy throughout the day tomorrow anthen breezy it is for saturday. here's a look at the forecast. we start this evening becoming breezy, continued cool. 59 to 56 degrees. then for tomorrow morning, it will be nippy. you will need a jacket. not a coat. 39 to 46. high temperatures tomorrow, 64 to 7. we start with a little sunshine. then the clouds fill in and i wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow we have ansolated shower. the weekend, a little warming, breezy and chilly on saturday. sunshine and calmer winds on sunday. >> we don't even need to get our car washed because mother nature will do it for us. >> just some soap. >> that's a luxury for my car. we've certainly had a dose of cooler weather over the last few days a a lot of us will soon be firing up the fireplace.

you need a little preplanning. >> chimney fires may not sound like much of a risk but they can catch explosively and end up destroying home. they are easily prevented with the help ofhe how to website, monkey see. rob neil with the fire administration has some tips. >> we're going to talk about how to inspect the fireplace to make sure it's safe. the first thing is take a look at the fireplace itself and make sure there aren't anyobvious cracks or problems with it. we d't want any heat that would escape the fire box where it might cause a problem. another thing that's very, very important, w want to make sure we have is a nice metal grate or a screen like this, catches any sparks that might fly out of the fireplace and prevents them from landing on nearby couple bustibles. here's a pile of newspaper that we've left by the fireplace. it is handy to have to start a fire but inase of a fire, we don't want a painful newspapers. we'll pick these up and get them

out of the way. this handle control the damper on this fireplace. the purpose is to regulate the amount of air that flows through. one of the problem they have, is they forgeto open the damper when they start a fire so we want to make sure it is in the open position. remember that on some modern fire places, theamper control is typically inside the fire box. let's take a quick look up that chimney to make sure there's nothing there. a big flashlight, get up there and take a look to make sure it is clear. you can see all the way to the sky. oftentimes at the firs fire of the season, you might find there is a problem in the chimney. it is not uncommon for birds or squirrels to build nests in there and cause an obstruction in the fireplace flue stack. so make sure it is clear all the way to the sky. with those few tips, you should be able to enjoy your fireplace and stay nice and warm and nice and safe.

welcome back. a major security presence at the d.c. department of public wos. new security measures were put into place ts morning of a a gunman shot two workers killing a 24-year veteran. 51-year-old larry hutchins of suitland was killed on "w" street northeast yesterday. another worker was hit but is expect to survive. the 33 freed miners in chile are still in the hospital today undergoing a battery of mical and psychological exams. doctors say some may be able to go home today. a large crowd gathered outside the hospital and cheered when each miner arrived there last night.

d.c.'s school chance lore michelle rhee is opening up about the future and what needs to happen about real reform to take place. yesterday she announced her resignation at the end of the month. she wasn't specific about her immediate future but she did hint at something on a larger stage. she said she hopes to have an
