schools were not evacuated. officials are trying to figure out how sent those letts. right now the fbi is also investigating a similar situation in tex where suspicious letters, full of white powder were sent to 13 schools in houston. wednesday deadly shooting at d.c.'s department of public works has led to increased security msures. some say this should have been done six months after after a report that outlineal security problems. pat llins has that report. >> reporter: this department of public works yard. this murder scene has a history of security problems. take a look at this report. news4 has obtained a security survey of this department of public works yard in brentwood. it was done about six months ago. it documents a number of serious problems. low quality indoor security

cameras installed outside. many of the camera wires he been cut. the recording device was found powered off in a locked cabinet. no one had the eys. now it was at this yard yesterday that a gunman walked in. fired more than 20 sho. one worker killed. one worker wounded. sources say police could not retrieve any mningful surveillance video from the crime scene. indeed today, some six months later, you can see the wires to some of the cameras are still cut. officials not happy about the security problems here. what sort of message does this send out to the workers? >> it is call a penny wise and a pound foolish. what we have done is cut security in many vital areas where we need that itleads the

much, much greater problems. the worst problem ever was the loss of a life. and that enrages me. that this could have been prevented. >> reporter: this security assessment of the brentwood yard, conducted last march and april by the protective services police department. the agency responsible for guarding city employees, and city facilities. the report recommended that an armed security guard be stationed at the gate. that the outdoor lighti be increased and that the getation be trimmed from the fence line. today, after the murder, there were arm grds checking i.d.s at the gates. there were portab lights positioned around to illuminate the yard and the vegetation had been removed. james is the president of the union that represents the dpw

william and loudoun counties. investigators say we've the large number of incidents, they haven't been able to get a good description of the person responsible. for the first time in months, there is a sense of calm today in chile. now that those trapped miners are safe. the last of the miners pulled out last night. the 33rd one was thehift supervisor. those miner are in the hospital. there are being put through a bat rif physical a psychological tests. some could be released in a day or two. they were trapped unrground for 69 days after a mine collapsed. the doctors say considering everything ty've been through, the men are in remarkable health. >> even we recognize from the medical team, we were completely surprised and we called thi really a miracle. because any effort we could have

h big s don't need help. middle class marylande do. more than 80 federal and local agencies joined for a terror drill in lorton for first responders. they practiced mock rescues and triage procedures. the drill started yesterday as part of a three-day event. the ent prepares first responders for a potential terror attack in d.c., maryland or virginia. the man accused of trying blow up an airplane last christmas represented himself. it was a quick hearing in

detroit federal court. the hearing for him lasted only 15 minutes. he is a nigerian who is charged with trying to use a weaponof mass destruction to blow up an airline. that flight was from the northwest airlines flight from amsterdam to detroit. they say he tried to set off explosives that were hidden in his underwear. the next hearing is scheduled for january. the military hearing of the accused shooter in the attack at ft. hood, texas, continued today. a soldier testified that he saw the defendant, major nadal hasan with two weapons including one that had a laser sight on it. he is an army psychiatrist. he has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder in those shootings last year. the military court is beingeld to determine whether majorasan should stand trial. >> there's new fog informing b the failed rescue of an aid

worker in afghan. her name was linda norgre. she was kidnapped by the taliban in september. she was kill on friday when u.s. special operations forces tried to rescue her. the guardian newspaper is a u.k. reported yesterday, that she separated from her taliban guards. authorities initially believed she was killed when a taliban member detonated a suicide vest. it is now believed that she may have been killed when a grenade was tossed into the come pound. a senior u.s. defense official confirm today, the serviceman who threw the grenade with you a u.s. navy seal. the controversy of the military's don't ask, don't tell policy is intensifying, it seem. earlier this week a judge in california ruled against the policy. now that decision might be overruled. jay gray has our report. >> reporter: late this afternoon, president obama made it clear. he plans to do awayith the military's don't ask, don't tell policy. >> this is not a question of

one of the area's largest sky scrapers is about to start construction. welcome back. a major change is coming to our d.c. skyline. >> the pan is to make, to bull a skyscraper about 30 stories tall. the project has been in the works for a decade now. >> reporter: they broke ground today in rosslyn on what will be the area's tallest ilding. a 390 foot gleaming testament to building technology and economic optimism. >> i think it sends a signal to all of our nation's capital, as well as e country, if you will, th we're back. you know, in the time of a tough recession, this building is going up. >> reporter: and going up higher than it could have on the other side of the potomac. >> d.c. we cannot go that high.
