the finish. sparks flew in las vegas between a much anticipated debate between harry reid and sharron angle. the two are back to back in the race for the senate seat. last night,t was angle who came out swinging. nbc's tracie potts is in washington with the details. >> od morning. we saw her come out swinging from the very beginning of that debate. you've got the senate's top democrat in danger of losing his seat to a tea party candidate who is third to national attention, a candidate who he calls extremist. last night, they slashed on pretty much every subject, social security, immigration, foreign polic and a couple of big ones. healtcare and jobs. >> myjob is to create jobs. what she's talking about is extreme. we have to do this. we've been doing it since boulder dam was created 81 years ago. we started the construction.

>> and your response? once again, harry reid, it's not your job to create jobs. it's your job to create policies that create the confidce for the private sector, to create those jobs. >> the debating actualy started before the official debate. both released new tv ads just before that debate last night. they don't have very long to make their case. early voting in nevada begins this weekend. lynn. >> tracie potts there in washington. thanks as always. well, the justice departnt is asking a u.s. district judge to allow the military don't ask, don't tell policy to stay in place, at least for now. that action came two days after the judge ordered the pentagon to stop enforcing its ban on gays and lesbians serving openly in the military. . in court papers filed yesterday, the government argued that allowing the ruling to be implemented would compliment ongoing reviews of the law.

speaking at a town hall yesterday, president obama reiterated his opposition to the policy. >> thisis not a question of whether the policy will end. this policy will end and will end on my watch. >> however, the administration has also said that congress and not the courts should change don't ask, don't tell. of the 33 chilean miners who spent over two months trapped underground are now adjusting to celebrity status in chile. the first three men left the hospital last night and were joined by a mob o photographers. most of the miners are just fine, although one was treated for pneumonia and three others had to have surgery for dental problems. earlier in the day, themen got a visit from chile's president who called the rescue a miracle. >> now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america. in florida, the happie place on earth turned ugly when

a guest attacked a driver on a disney shuttle bus. the driver told the guest that the bus was full. thgs escalated when the hot tempered man lunged at the driver even though he was hold ago baby. officials say the driver is on paid leave while the confrontation is being investigated. in rhode island, it took five fighter else eight hours to put out a massive blaze that gutted a mill. the mill was mostly vacant and there are no injuries reported. officials are looking into how it stard. oregon man is behd bars this morning for a bizarre burglary attempt. the man was trying to break into a rocks and minerals museumy digging hole through a wall dressed in head to toe camouflage. the caretaker discover the hole and called police. the 33-year-old man is charged with burglary and miss chief. >>back in florida, one girl

what's helping t build the storm. and it's going sit there and spin. it's going to get cut off over the next 48 hours. it's goingo sit there and be a big wind machine over new england. and all those leaves that are on the trees, a lot of them won't be when this storm is done. ost of the country is clear. even south florida is looking nice and dry today, too. the yellow is a moderate to heavier rain. you'll notice that almost all of new england is discovered covered right now. new york city, long island, the rain is ending here shortly. boston, you'll probably havto go another two or three hours befe your rain end all of northern new england wibt won't be until later on this afternoon. and the big story isn't the rain. it's going to be thewind. as this story anks up, the winds on the backside, we're calling it a nor'easter. it's really only a nor'easter for the coasl areas of maine. the northwest wind is what's going to get everyone's attention, from philadelphia, new york, up through connecticut and rhode island. over the next two days, wcould see winds gusting from 35 to 45
