chuckbell.nbcwashington.com. a water main break near 9th street and constitution avenue. cotitution has been closed between 9th and 12th streets. the break happened in a 24 inch main. the pipe has been in the water system since the 1920s. d.c. water says it will work through the weekend to get the main fixed. >> there's a lot of street damage. once we get the pipe fixed there will be a lot of repair done to street. it wil be done by rush hour on nday. >> since repairs and closures are ongoing, stay away from constitution avenue. another traffic alert for northern virginia drivers. in the tysons corner area. last night vdot closed all lanes of 123, better known as chain

bridge road. crews are demolishing the old 495 northbound bridge this weekend. the construction should be finished by 5:00 monday morning. this is part of the hot lanes project which is scheduled to take two years before it's all finished. pele who use a busy commuter lot in northern virginia are calling for more safety after a pedestrian was hit and killed. a man was trying to cross the dumfries road from mcdonald's to the commuter lot. others who travel that area said proichs are badly needed. >> walking is crazy. tell them to not even walk that way. you can't blame the cars, they don't see you in the evening or late, it gets dark over here. no lights. so you can be hit. >> police say they are looking for a white box truck that was also involved in this accident. that driver may not have known he hit the man.

a job lar nightclubin d.c.'s u corridor were arrested. now pice chief captain lanier said its another example of vigilante justice. >> reporter: by emergency order of police chief cathy lanier the dc9 club was closed down. it came after a man who threw a brick into a window was ased and beaten by bar workers. that man, ali mohammad later died. >> everybody is a regular. just really kind of unfortunate that this had to happen. >> reporter: lanier said five dc9 owners including a part

owner is charged in the savage beating. >> there are severe injuries not consistent with being tackled. >> was he beaten? >> yes. >> was he kicked? >> yes. reporter: now there are questions about whether the men will face murder charges when they appear in court on saturday. sources tell news 4 the medical examiner could not confirm that mohammad died as a result of the beating. >> he didn't deserve to die. they say the case is pending. we don't know what is going on. >> reporter: mohammad's relatives tell news 4 they are too searching for answers. >> they told me that it's still an ongoing investigation. so i want to know what was cause of ali, 27 years old. young boy. he's killed. >> reporter: all five of those suspects remain in custody. they are due in court sometime today for a first appearance.

a friend of one of those suspects tells me he's a student at howard university studying physics. in northwest, darcy spencer, "news4 today." the alleged prince george's county cheating scandal as a cadet is suing the county. cats were allegedly given answers before taking the exam. officials tried to silence him as retaliation. he said he was let go as a medical board declared him unfit for ty. two montgomery county police officers have be placed on administrative leave after a man died while in custody last week. police were called toan apartment building in white oak, maryland on report of a man

acting suspiciously. they arrived and found a man standing in the stairwell. when he tried to leave he put up a fight. they tased and pepper sprayed hi he was taken to the hospital suffering from cardiac arrt and died several days later. >> this morning a warning for parents about products that are become being more popular with teens. it's called k2. also called spice. that product is lelly sold because it's label go ahead as an incense but contains a synthetic form of marijuana and is responsible for one over dose in virginia. >> reporter: k2, also known as spice is being marketed as an aroma therapy product. this mixture of herbs and spices is being smoked by teens because it has a chemical that mimics

marijuana. >> it can increase heart rate, profuse sweating. >> reporter: police say in the leesburg community a teenager recently overdosed in k2 and the synthetic marijuana was found on other teens. it's not illegal. >>it's avaable. selling for about $35 as a gram. the store owners, the customers are buying it for. >> reporter: leesburg police believe k2 was only being sold in a handful of stores and plan to ask those store owners to remove it from there shelves. at this store we walked in and asked the clerk for k2. >> do you have k2? how much? >> cash only. >> you don't take credit cards at all? >> we do but this one we don't

cleveland and at ohio state university in columbus. here in the district the man behind a facebook write in campaign to re-elect mayor adrian fenty said he know it's a long shot. so far the facebook page s some 6800 supporters. a popular georgetown pizza parlor is getting ready to reopen. city be officials closed the business in march. they cited severalviolations. it stayed open late into the night. the owner will reopen. the new restaurant will go by the name go fresh. it will close at 1:00 a.m. and wot serve pizza. neighbors worry they will still see the same old problems. >> it will reopen, der a new name but same ownership. and everybody is just concerned that the they will relive the

nightmare. >> residents are complaining that trash is already starting to pile up in the backyard. the owners of the business could not be reached for comment. cab drivers, a lot of people think they are not so polite and some people don't expect them to be. >> that is until now. alexandria officials are proposing to make it illegal for cabbies to be rude to customers. news 4 john trippen has the story. >> oh,my god that would be pretty cool. who want as rude cab driver, right? >> reporter: that's what the stiff alexandria is thinking and on saturday it will propos a new ordinance that will make it illegal for a cab driver to be rude. >> cab drivers sometimes don't give the necessary time to help peopleespecially those who are not from the d.c. ea. >> reporter: if this proposal passes it would be illegal for cab drivers to be rude to city officials or anyone on the street. >> i would be supportive of that. i think it's a good thing. because some rude drivers that

abuse customers i'm losing my business. i don't want to lose my business. >> reporter: some think this is going too far. >> rude is something that's difficult to define. i don't know that it's somethi we should seriously look at or spend any time or money on. >> reporter: taxi drivers are taking this serious because under the proposal any driver who receives too many rude complaints could have their permit taken away snipe don't understand why they are making it so hard on the drivers because we usuall drive people, the majority of them are drunk, okay and usually they are abusive or disrespectful. >> in this situation you don't know who is right or who is wrong. they've put a camera in my car to see whoaid what. is the driverlying? is the customer telling truth? >> everybody in new york was always a rude. there is nothing wrongith it. can't force people to be nice. >> reporter: spoken like a true new yorker. many paengs we spoke to said

20 miners are dead and 17 others trapped after an early morning explosion at a chinese coal mine. it happened 6:00 a.m. local time. about 400 miles south of beijing. unclear how far down the trapped miners are or what caused that deadly mining blast.

there's this ad for a florida hospital and it's become the butt of plenty of jokes and people seem to be seeing completely different than what the doctor ordered. >> take a look at this ad for aport st. lue hospital. what do you see. it's a boy kissing an expectant mother's stomach. some people don't see a stomach some see a rear end. the doctor who created the ad say it's clearly a stomach. >> the little boy occion pregnant person. >> a little boy kissing a person. >> could you see that maybe he's kissing a butt. >> you can tell by the way he's kissing. >> no you can tell it's the front of a person's stomach. >> after this supposed butt or belly controversy, the hospital

in a busy northern virginia commuter lot has people calling for more safety. police is looking for a second vehicle involved in that accident. derrick ward explains. >> reporter: 38-year-old man of manassas died in the middle of dumfries road afte 6:00 a.m. >> he tried to find something to eat. so he tried to cross the street. >> reporter: there are no crosswalks here but still heavily used by pedestrians who park in the lot and try toross the street for a bite or a cup of coffee. it proved a fatal choice for the man. >> heard a screech. it hit the pedestrian on the side. and it's like real quick. >> reporter: police say the driver of a blue dodge ram stopped after the accident but they continued to search for another vehicle. >> a white box truck. not too much information to go

he was chased down by of five club employees including a part owner and police say he was been so badly he died. but the medical examiner has not been able to confirm that the death was as a result of that beating. >> the case is pending. we don't know what's going on. no one telling us the answer. i just go to the medical examiner's office. they told me that it's still under investigation. so, i want to know what was the cause of ali, 27 years old. a young boy. he's killed. >> dc9 has been shut down for 96 hours by emergency order from chief lanier. all five employees are due in court sometime today. the 33 chilean miners

continue to recover this weekend. ahead of them, though, lies a new series of challenges. turning to sciety and trying resume some sense of a normal life as nbc kerry sanders reports it may not be as easy as it seems. >> reporter: everyone in chile wants to see and hear from the miners and some of what they heard for the first time was anger. one miner says why do these miner disasters have to happen? because the greedy owners want to make money. they were looking for gold and may have found it in survival. they want $20 million for their story. they have a pact that they notarized while still underground to sell their story to the highest bidder and divide profits equally. forchileans there's no question they deserve a payday but for at least one of the rescued 33, remarkably life as a miner will eventually resu.

54-year-old jose was on the phone confirming a contract to go back to work in another mine after a vacation. miners say in those first 17 days cutoff from the world with only a rash of two days food there was despair and fist fights. for now they want the feel good story told, how 33 men survived 70 days. it's unclear if they have cured a deal yet but one hollywood agent tells nbc news $20 million might be about right. kerry sanders, nbc news, copiapo, chile. i wasn't expecting him to say that. >> can't say i'm surprised that they want the money. i am surprised t hear about it. normally that sort of thing stays under wraps. >> it will be interesting too if they really stick together or if one defects. they stuck together that far. still to come some have cool ining flight entertainment.

montgomery county man who was hit and killed trying to cross rockville pike last weekend has been laid to rest. family and friends said good-bye yesterday. police have not charged the driver. >> that was one of several pedestrian accidents in our area recent weeks. so what you can do to protect yourself? joining us now in our studio is captain paul starks from the montgomery county police department. thank you for joining us. what's going on here? we're seeing a lot more or at least an uptick in the number of pedestrians killed in montgomery county and around the aa. what are police finding when they investigate these accidents? >> well, first i want to say that there are some open investigations, not only in montgomery county and aound the area. we're not laying blame or assessing who is at fault in

these but we're looking at what montgomery county has seen in the pt and what we've noticed in some of these pedestrian collisions is that there is pederian error that is attributable to the collisions. >> most of the pedestrians are making mistakes. they are distracted. >> t two most common errors are where pedestrians will cross in the mid all of block or cross when the indicator is telling them not walk. but it goes deeper than that. some folks are on cell phones or talking with a friend who is walking with them. once they hit the street they are inhe danger zone. they've got to be engaged in crossing the lanes that they are crossing and be aware. >> the two who crossed rockville pike and killed were guys who, you know, they weren't teenagers and they looked in great physical condition, obviously, prixoomablely knew,000 cross the street safely. what happened there? >> that collision is still under investigation. we do know the driver had

alcohol in his syste we're looking at the entire picture there. nine that case the driver clearly could have contributed to that rather than just the pedestrians making an error in judgment? >>hat's correct. >> ay. then what about aspen hill the mother who was pushing the baby stroller. fortunately both survived. very scary scene there. >> again, that's about eight lanes of traffic. you really have to be engaged in crossing that part of georgia avue, and there was errors on both sides. >> as a mother too you don't think about you're sticking that stroller out fit. i've done it many times. a few feet out in front you. what about, it is that important to cross in a crosswalk. i think sometime when you're walking around you ink what's the big difference between stepping on this side of the line or this side of the line. >> well that's where drivers are expecting pedestrians to cross not in the middle of the block. that helps. everybody has a duty here whether you're a driver or a
