80. >> oh, boy. thanks. we're following breaking news out of maryland. three people including firefighter are hurt. onperson is missing after a massive three-alarm fire in an apartment building in suitland. this fire broke out around 4:30 this morning in the 3300 block of curtis drive. derrick ward is live at the scene with the very latest. do we know what cause this fire? >> reporter: not at this point. this was a very intense fire. they are still wrapping up. still some energized hoses. they have a lot of work todo with this fire. it started at about 4:30 a.m. here in the 3362 -- actually the address is 3362 curtis drive. when firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and fire on the terrace level at the rear of the building. the ht and smoke blocked residents exits from the center stair wells and they had to retreat to thr balconies. th fire was extremely intense

as we said when firefighters arrived on the scene and eventually the flames extended to the upper floors and all the way to the roof of the building and spread to an adjacent building at 3362 curtis. both buildings were evacuated and firefighte actually had to pull out. it was about 7:00 a.m. when they got the bulk of the fire down and firefighters were able to get back int the building. that's when they began their searches. one person believed to have been in the apartment of origin has not been accounted for. there were three injuries. two civilians and one firefighter. those injuries are not described as being too serious at this point. they were taken to a hospital and treate but in the aftermath of this, 24 families have been displaced. the red cross is here. the fire went to three-alarms with about 100 firefighters and 30 pieces of equipment on the scene much of what remains here as the aftermath continues. we're live in suitland, now back. that video is incredible. you don't usually see the fire

spread so far across the building that way. >> reporter: indeed. it had the whole top part of the building t feed on. that's what made it so intense. >> derrick ward reporting live for us. thank you. also breaking this morning district police are investigating a drug lab in a residence hall on the campus of georgetown university. a d.c. fire and rescue spokesperson tells us security guards discovered the lab around 6:15 this morning on one of the upper floors. the building was then evacuated. no injuries have been reported. police have not said what type of drugs were being made in that lab. a histori alexandria chapel home to thousands of protests over the decades is being remembered this morning after a fire deroyed the house of worship. the blazstarted on the campus of the virginia theological seminary just after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. and now worshiprs, students and faculty a sharing memories

of the 129-year-old chapel. jackie bensen reports. >> reporter: by night fall firefighters were still spreading water on the smoldering remains of the chapel at the virginia theological seminary in alexandria. agents from the federal bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms is helping to investigate. >> the entire building was damaged. there was fire from basically every window of the building. >> reporter: firefighters encountered difficulties because of the age of the 129-year-old structure. old-fashioned lime mortar holding up the brick wall started to soften under the high pressure stream of water creating a danger of collapse. slate roof shingles popped and exploded. the chapel is the heart of the seminary. it was founded in 1823 to teach and/or detain priests of the episcopal church. >> tre are countless people who stood in that pulpit, preached, ordained, married, baptized.

i was ordained as a priest in that chapel. i was installed as the dean and president in that chapel. >> reporter: horrified current and former students watched. some in tears. >> i worshipped there at noon. there were windows in here that were given by various classes. my class of '97 gave one of the windows. it's our chapel and it's gone. it's a terrible thing. the church is still here because we're all still standing here. so we're the church. it's just something that we love is gone. >> reporter: jackie bensen, "news4 today." the district will ha to look for a new fire chief come january. chief dennis rubin announced he'll resign and not be part of vincent gray's administration. he's being worked in fire rescue jobs for 35 years. it's the latest shake up of depament heads as the city begins its transition from the

fenty administration. several have announced their intentions to step down. police chief cat think lanier said she would like to stay on. it's likely gray will reappoint her. after five days theury is set for the chandra levy murder trial. there's strict rules in place. the 12 member panel as well as the four alternates were told they could not use social media when discussing the case. one potential juror was smissed after fense complained about him using twitter during the selection process. ingmar guandique is charged being with killing levi back in 2001. opening remarks are expected to begin on monday. meanwhile a former student who shot and killed a frostburg university basketball play has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. tyrone hall originally claimed self-defense bacin april. but he changed his plea after the jury sent a note indicating

until another hearing sometime next week. witnesses say there was no warning as a massive shark pulled a 19-year-old california boogie boarder beneath the waves. the rare and deadly shark attack has left aommunity in shock. nbc's kristen dahlgren reports. >>eporter: it was just before 9:00 a.m. 19-year-old lucas ransom was boogie boarding in the surf along santa barbara county when a friend saw him go under water. >> saw his friend go under water, came up, something was wrong, noticed that he had been attacked by a shark. >> reporter: his friend and witnesses pulled him to shore,ut it was too late. >> fire personnel responded and onounced him dead at the scene. the boogie board was also recovered which had a large bite taken out it. >> reporr: this is that boogie board. the bite more than a foot wide. shark expert steve blair. >> this was a big shark. to inflict this kind of a wound it was probably a great white. they are not very common in california.

they had a mild overnight period. what's happening there is we got this clash of air masses going on. yesterday there were some big time thunderstorms there from areas of northern and eastern texas up to kansas. today that area will be further to the north, iowa and missouri. why? because we've got a jet stream and then we got cold front that's making its way off tohe east. for us here, areas of philadelphia, new york city and all the way down to atlanta and around mississippi we'll see a significant warm up. i'm calling this really a major warmup for this time of year as we go through the weekend and into next week. so, nice for the east. there's a look at the two weather systems one across the midwest another coming in to the pacific northwest giving us about three quarters to an inch of rain as we go through monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week. good fall color. moderate color here. peak color off to the west. warming to about 75 degrees by the time we get to tomorrow. pleasant today. couldn't be better.

our thanks. police are now questioning students after a drug lab was found in a georgetown university dorm. a d.c. fire and rescue spokesperson tells us security guards discovered an inactive meth lab around 6:15 this morning on one of the upper floors of harbor hall. students have been evacuated but have now been allowed back in. parishioners in virginia are remembering a historic alexandria hospital after fire ripped through the house of worship. the fire broke out on the campus of virginia theological seminary after 4:00 yesterday afternoon. firefighters had difficulty baling thislaze due to fwulding's age. mortar began to soften from high water pressure and ste shingles exploded as the 129-year-old chapel burned down. this morning worshippers, students and faculty are sharing memories made at the heart of campus. >> there are countless people

who stood in that pulpit, they preached, they have been ordained, they have been married, they have been baptized. i was personally ordained as priest in that chapel. i was installed as the dean and president of that chapel. >> in an unusual move the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms is helping to investigate the cause of this fire. prince george's county police have new evidence in the shooting investigation of a former nba and georgetown sketball star charles smith. officers say they found a large amount of cocaine while searching smith's home yestery. ey also found evidence of a gambling operaon. smith was shot in his bowie home thursday. police believe he knew his attacker. there have been no arrests. smith is recovering in a hospital after undergoing surgery. he was a star guard in georgetown in the late 1980s and played for the boston celtics in the nba. she was known for building and leading one of prince george's county's mega churches and yesterday thousands turned out to remember and celebrate

off to the ea, annapolis, st. mary's and leonardtown where we were in the low to mid-40s this morning. elkins 35 degrees, below freezing just a couple of hours ago. we got this huge area of high pressure at the surface. gave us a chill this morning. a mild finish for us because we'll hold on to that southwesterly wind a little stronger by the afternoon. gaithersburg, maryland at 49 degrees right now. montgomery unty, college park you're now at 52. look at the weather from the nation's mid-section. that push of mild air all thanks to this big ridge of high pressure that's buildin over the eastern half of the nation. we'll hold on to these mild conditions probably getting up to 80 degree about one, maybe two days next week but we'll see an increase in clouds too from several weather fronts. this one first. bring some severe thunderstorms to parts of the plains again, probably missouri an eve iowa. for us a chance by monday afternoon. there's the approach of the front. we'll probably pick upigh clouds by tomorrow too.
