seice to us. >> vice president joe biden is honoring the forces at arlington national cetery. earlier, he hosted a veterans day breakfast at the white house. thtruth s many are forgotten. those veterans homeless or disabled find independence an uphill battle. today, charities are trying to change that. >> reporter: good morning to you, barb rampt all morning long, volunteers have been loading this truck it is almost full. full of furniture headed for southeast washington. tonight, eight formerly homeless veterans will have a completely furnished place to call home. the group, a wider circle,

collected furniture and essentials for veterans. they will fully furnish four apartments in southeast washington this afrnoon. there are estimated to be 1,400 homeless veterans in the d. area. and for verans day, they wanted to remember those who sacrificed for their country. >> we have beds, kitchen tables, and microwaves and sheets and silverware and most of the items people have donated. >> the words homeless and veterans should never go together. homeless and any other word shouldn't go together, especially veterans. it makes us feel special to help those whollow us to have the freedoms w have. >> they are about to pull out of here and spend the next several hours furnishing those

apartments for the homeless veterans they want to rnl those who gave so much to our country. >> thank you very much elaine. >> that broken down carnival cruise ship is arriving to port. six tug boats pull the ship to shore. it left from long beach monday morning. an enge fire knocked out power, leaving passengers with no air conditioning, hot food or water. the navy carri supplie out to them. ice, spam, crab meat and pop tarts. >> it s scary f them. we made it out. spent most of their day in their pajamas on the deck, rolling with the punches ever since. >> we have passeers who have full service restored as far as bathroom seices, no air flow.

the doors closed before she could get on. passengers saw what happened, called for a train operator and got off with the baby at the next station. metro police watched the baby there until the mother arrived. inspections uncovered bad brakes on dozens of escalators now. so far, 25 brakes have been placed and 47 escalator units ha been taken out of service altogether. the inspection started after an accident at the station that injured several people. they hope to have all elevators inspected by this weekend. we will have more in the next half hour. will check on the mid day traffic. jerry is with us now. light traffic because of the holiday, jerry? >> yes, in other locations, very, very tough going. i will show you one location, 395 cmes to a grinding halt in

camera only got warnings at those locations. >> the man accused of killin chandra levy is facing less charges. prosecutors dropped one count of murder and sexual assault. he faces a kidnapping and robbery charge and two other murder charges. a forensics expert said that gary condit's dna was found on her underwear. police no longer believe he was involved. >> an exchange of gunfire, police say it happened when a thief tried to rob an off duty police officer. the suect fired at the officer but missed. the officer returned fire and the suspect took off it. is not clear if that spect was hit.
