>> he had the first of two key hearings this morning. a judge will also decide whether he stands trial for the deadly stabbing of a 60-year-old man. he's suspected in a total of 14 stabbings, five of those deadly. police are looking for the gunman who shot and killed a man this morning in northeast washington. he was struck -- he struck at around 3:00 this morning at 11th and galloway streets northeast. it happened at ft. circle park. police say the victim was shot in the head. investigators say they're looking for a gray chevy tahoe with two people inside.

today crews are putting a finishing touch on ohio drive downtown that. project has snarled traffiin our area for months. it should be done by t time you hetd out the door monday morning. in order to complete the work, ohio drive will have to be closed for this entire weekend. news 4's elaine reyes is there and can tell us what it's looking like so far. have they gotten the work start snd. >> not yet. it still looks great now. there definitely will be traffic tie-ups this weekend. ohio drive will shut down for the entire weekend at about 11:00 tonight. the construction project near the mall and monument at times snled traffic for hours and into virginia. on monday morning ohio drive reopens. this weekend all lanes will get a final surface lift and the w

still that way, not a cloud i could see. tom will tell us if we can expect us to continue. he's been promising that all weekend. you're not goingo take that back i hope? >> not after what we've been through all week. we are going to do that into the weekend. it may be a bit milder by saturday afternoon. right now on this friday morning after a very cold start things have warmed up nicely, we're intohe mid 50s throughout most of the region now. 55 at prince george's county, andrews air force base as well as out in western fairfax county near the ldoun county line where dulles airport is located. in montgomery county, mid 50s there. upper 50s in washington. elsewhere, temperatures that were well below freezing in the mountains have now climbed into the upper 40s to near 50 at this hour. around the bay and on the eastern shore, temperatures are climbing into the mid 50s there. we've got plenty of sunshine all coming from this enorus ridge

of high pressure. it stretchesrom eastern canada all the way down to the gulf coast and we here are right in the middle of it. another day with bright sunshine and a blue sky. a light northeasterly breeze. we've had this persistent storm over the mid atlantic that's pushed water into the bay and the tidal potomac. there may be abnormally high tides in the next 24 hours. we'll have a light northeasterly breeze. temperatures climbing into the low 60s and a wonderful weekend coming up. we'll take a look at changes that willbe moving i the first part of next week. that will be in just a couple of minutes. stay tuned. i'll have the latest in the forecast for the skins-eagles game on monday night. >> thank you, tom. to an exclusive this morning. the d.c. fire department is investigating allegations of two emts lied about where their ambulance was when responding to a call in which an elderly woman died. sources say theywere

temporarily assigned to a fire station on 14th street northwest just north of park roederly one morning in september. a 911 call came in for an incident just blocks away. the trip was about an elderly woman bleeding from a medical incision on her neck. a fire engine arrived six minutes later but the ambulance arrived 16 minutes after that. sources tell news 4 the ambulance was apparently not at the fire station near theoman who eventually died. stead, it was near a station a few miles away. d.c. fire and ems is not commenting on this incident. nurses at washington hospital center say they will go through with a one-day strike on the day before thanksgiving. national nurses united sa understaffing at the hospital is hurting patient care. the union now hopes the strike will force a new contract with hospital management. hospit officials say they're still hopeful for a resolution, though. but they do have a contingency plan just in case there is a strike.

starting today, y'll get a ticket if you're caught by one of three red light cameras in the district. those cameras are located at connecticut and porter, 14th and k streets and third street and new york avenue northwest. the cameras have been up for about a month. police have only been issuing warnings. now if you get caught, you'll receive a $75 ticket by mail. eight minutes after 11:00 is the time. passengers on that carnival ship the "spleor" are spending their first full day fr. many are calling what was a nitmare at sea they experienced on that ship. coming up, we'll hear from some of the pasngers and get the test on the vapgs of what went wrong. plus why an american boy staged a protest near the site of the g-20 summit in south korea. find out who wants to start charging admission "know the species, know the stain." lanolin-free coa i know it's an alpaca. walks in here, looks says "hey look, it's alama!" cleaning the stain like he would a llama stain. time he's wasting. ♪ call 1-800-steemer

right now a number of groups are trying to determine what went wrong on a carnival cruise ip. the national transportation safety board says panama will lead the investigation since the vessel was home ported there. the u.s. coast guard will assist becausmany of the passengers were american citizens n. the meantime the 3,000 vacationers who were on the ship are certainl happy to be back on dry land. we showed you the arrival of the carnival "splendor" yesterday. today we'r hearing from those

travelers. news 4's aaron gilchrist has more. >> folks getting off the boat were remarbly upbeat about the whole experience. make no bens about it, it was a smelly, miserable three days on the carnival "splendor." passengers described how their cabins rattled as the ship came to a full stop. there was a fire in an engine room. at one point according to one passenger account, the crew told them to head for thlife boats. that wasn't necessary, but 3,000 passengers were stuck in the middle of the pacific ocean, no ac, no hot water and after a while no decent food. >> the food was a little bit cold. >> we had sandwiches, lots of sandwiches. >> sandwiches and salad. i think we lost ten pounds. >> first cruise i ever lost weight. never seen hot dog sandwiches and green bean sandwiches.

>> power went out, no power. no flushing toilets. we're kind of improvising, when the water came on, we used our sink to take showers, sponge baths. >> i'm not sure i'll ever go on a cruise again. >> they actually openedthe bar and were giving everybody free alcol which i think helped a lot. made everybody happy. >> you'll remember pop tart and spam were flown in the navy and coast guard by tuesday to help with the food situation. that's as mexican tug boats pulled the ship int san diego. carnival says a crank case on one of those six diesel generator split. that caused the fire. the cruise line is issuing refunds for this cruise and free cruises in the fute for all the passengers. >> they called it a smelly mess. were they complaining more abo the smell of the smoke, the sewage or of each other from not having showered? >> i would imagine all of the ove, barbara. >> i know they're glad to be back. thanks a lot, aaron. we are following a developing story in indonesia this morning. hot ash pouring from mt. merapi

is putting surrounding villages in danger. the volcano erupted two weeks ago and has kille 206 people since. some people put their lives in danger by returning the the mountain tomine mineral-rich sand. mineral can be used as raw building materials. right now president obama is in japan to attend a regional econom summit. it's the fourth and final st on the president's ten-day four country good will tour. earlier today he held a press conference in seoul, south korea. the president talked optimistically about world economic prospects but warned other countries not to slip back into the old ways that caused the economic crisis in the first place. >> we agreed to keep focing on growth. at home the united states has been doing our part by making historic investmention in

infrastructure. even as we must do more to ensure that that growth is sustained and translates into jobs for our people. >> at the g-20 summit the president was unsuccessful in securing a free trade agreement with south korea. he also made little progress with china in talks about currency manipulation. the u.s. has long accused china of deliberately keeping its currency valueow in order to boost e ports. not far from where the g-20 summit took place in seoul, an american boy staged a quiet protest for his environmental cause. 13-year-old jonathan lee hung a poster around his neck that said picketing for peace treaty in the korean war. police didn't stop the boy's protest because they said it didn't hamper security. he's also well known for a tree planting campaign here in the u.s. >>budgetuts could mean you'll have to pay to get into smithsonian museums at sometimes. president obama's ficit reduction commission suggested

congress cut $225 million from the smithsonian institution's budget and begin charging admission fees to make up for that lost money. the difference could be made by charging $7.50 per visitor. smithsonian museums have been free since it was founded back in 1846. we'll talk again to tom now as we look ahead to the weekend and to next week. he can tell ushat we can expect. good morning again >> we have this wonderful run of weather continuing here. it's going to keep on going right into the weekend. we do have changes on the way that we'll likely have taking place beginning on monday. right now look at the gorgeous blue sky. looking at northwest washington in foreground. the camera on the towers i looking off toward the northeast. you can see northeast washington in the middle distance. prince george's county way off on the horizon. righ now at reagan national airport it's up to 57 degrees. and it is incredibly dry. we've got a lot northeasterly breeze right now. still a lot of those trees are

showing some decent color. but most are the browns and oakers of november. looks at the lowse have. down in the 20s. manassas bottomed out at 23 this morning. at reagan national theow is 36, got down to 25 in frederick. out of dulles, down to 28. it was below freezing in prince george's county as well. these low temperatures were hoing steady for several hours in the 20s. martinsburg got down to 24. just about everywhere in the shenandoah valley it bottomed out in the 20s as well. around the bay it was a bit milder as well as on the eastern shore. the bay water temperatures are still around 50 degrees. while looking at temperatures now, it has warmed up nicely. it'snto the mid 50s throughout much of the region. eastern shore around the bay and throughout most of maryland and viinia and westvirginia. now it's beginning to warm up there. we got down into the low 20s there. right now in the upper 50s near washington and arlington county. mid 50s, montgomery and fairfax

counties. the whiter views showing temperatures around the region that climbed into the 40s. right now at elkins at 49. they bottomed out there this morning in the low 20s. now it's in the 50s in the carolinas as well. all up and down the atlantic seaboard there's plenty of sunshine and we've got very pleasant conditions for november. going back over the last 12 hours, we've seen this persistent ridge of high pressure holding in. meanwhile there' a storm system spinning away out over the western atlantic. this is the one that hit new england last couple days with the wind and rain. this persistent east and northeast flow from this system has been pushing some water up the cheese peak bay and the tidal potomac. at times of high tide we may have high water over the next 24 hours or so. meanwhile in the midwest there's a storm sstem spreading ra from the upper great lakes down to the central an southern plains. that's going to stay to our west here and through the weekend as well. now, as we go forward over the next 48 hours, the future cast

shows that front in the midwest will continue to spread rain there, maybe get a little snow in the upper midwest from the syem by saturday evening. but here up and down the atlantic seaboard this high pressure will continue to hold on with a clear sky today, tonight, tomorrow, most of sunday, and this front will be coming through on sunday. it appears it will just be some clouds as it does come o through sunday afternoon. so for this friday, enjoy. lots of sunshine. we'll have temperatures into the low 60s in the next couple hours. it will briefly be there in the low 60s. then after sunset which today is getting earlier and earlier, 4:57, we'll be under a clear sky. the moon in the western sky will be setting around 11:00 tonight. a clear sky starting saturday morning into the mid 30s tomorrow morning. during the day on saturday,ots of sunshine, light variable wind. we should climb into the mid 60s. then on sunday looking terrific. afternoon highs into the low 60s. we may again have just a few

preparing to finish work on ohio drive downtown. unfortunately that means shting down the major roadway for th entire weekend. ohio drive will close at 11:00 tonight to finish paving and road markings and should reopen in tim for monday morning's rush. ght now panama is leading the investigation into what caused the fire on board a carnival cruise ship. it left thousands of passengers strandedbout 200 miles out to sea for several days with little food and electricity. the u.s. coast guard will hell newspaper the investation since many of the passengers were american citizens. jennifer mee better known as the hiccup gir has been denied bond by a judge. she started hiccupping again. her mother told the judge that her hiccups were evidence of a neurological issue which could explain her bizarre behavior. mee lived a transient lifestyle for a year before meeting two men andallegedly being involved in the murder of a 21-year-old. her mother and lawyer were on the "today show" and said she

families are going through this. our hearts go out to them. here today we've got a beaiful day under way. good morning. there's the beautiful blue sky over washington. the live view from the sky watcher camera on this friday morning. right now 57 at national airport. into the mid 50s right now in prince george, arlington, fairfax and montgory counties. generally in the 50s from the shenandoah valley to the chesapeake bay and atltic beaches. farther to the west it's in the 40s where it was just 20 degrees earlier this morning. in most locations we had subfreezing temperatures throughout much of the region this morning. right now with this gorgeous sky we're warming back into the 50s. we out to hit the low 60s by early to mid afternoon for a brief time and then right back down into the 40s this evening under a clear sky. good weather for the high school games and tomorrow's games as well. outdoor fun and recreation, a great day on saturday with highs reaching the mid 60s. a chilly start to the day. another chilly start on sunday. monday partly cloudy to mostly

cloudy at times with a high near 60. a small chance of a shower. odds are the skins and eagles game will be dry on monday night. it does look like we have a likelihood of rain on tuesday. then midweek next wk drying out. >> okay. thank you, tom. now to atory you saw first on 4. a veterans' day attack at, o all places, an american legion post. someone pistol whipped and robbed three women at the post in brandywine. it happened as they were preparing to honor service members. the attacker approached one of the victims while she was laying a wreath outside. he reportedly handcuff her and two other women inside after one of the victims try to fight him off. >> she came out and jumped on his back and threw her coffee on him and tried to get him off me. he kept running around, where's the money, where is this? the women did end up serving veterans after being treated at

a hospital. the suspect took off in one of the victim's car, they found the car t no other signs of the suspect. a silver spring man is facing assault charges after a dramatic road ge incident on sunday afternoon in prince george's county along powder mill road in beltsville. 47-year-old andrew dunne was trying to pass another car but couldn't. the second star stopped and dunne then pulled up next to it and started yelling at the driver inside. when that other driver lled away and called police, officers say dunne pulled out a gun and started firing shots. police heard everything over the cell phone. no one aarently was hurt. for many, a pet is a member of the family. and having one pass away is never easy. one maryland woman has had to deal with the loss of her dog twice. joan harris's pomeranian died recently. joan apparently had him cremated. however, the company that cremated teddy lost his remains on the highway.

valley pet cemetery says they lost teddy because the driver forgot to close the back door of the vehicle. harris says she walked up and down miles of road trying to find the box that was carrying teddy's remains. >> i feel it's so unjust for this little animal, he was born in such aorrific thing and it's like he's trash is how i felt. >> the general manager of valley pets put out a statement saying, quote, something like this is the last thing we would want to happen to a family. it was unfortunate -- an unfortunate stake, they said, that our company made. we are going to turn our attention now to our roadways throughout and seehat jerry has to tell us about how things are moving. does it look like a friday? folks heading out of town already, jerry? >> it does. a lot of folks took today off since yesterday was a federal holiday. hey, why not make it a long weekend. the volume was a little lighter than what we typically see.

can't see your face. i had moved it back a little so she could see the ling of my hair. and she wouldn't sell me anything out of the store. and i felt discriminated against. >> fas mart issued a statement saying it has a zero tolerance policy involving any type of discrimition. the richmond-based convenience store suspended the clerk while it investigates the incident. a high school play in maryland tomorrow may see more drama well before the curtain call. west borrow baptist church plans to protest at richmond montgomery high school in rockville before the play even starts. the controversial group is known for its anti homosexuality demonstrations and protests at funerals of oldiers. news 4's john schriffen explains how it attrted the continue very see. >> whenever i think about matthew, i think about his incredibly beaming smile.

the latest read on consumer sentiment from the university of michigan actually came in higher for the month of november. not enough to move the stocks high tore day. leaders of the world's top 20 economies have refused to call on countries to stop undervalues their curncies. that's leaving open a dispute between e u.s. and china raising fears of a global trade war. at the end of their two-day summit, g-20 lears issued a watered down statement only agreeing to refrain from, quote, competitive devaluation of their respective currencies. fedex expects to ship 16 million packages on the busiest day of the year, september 13th. they signal how the broader economy is doing, if consumers are buying that means they're shipping or vice versa. if they have these high projections it looks like things might be looking up for the
