good evening. i'm jim vance. >> and i'm doreen gentzler. authorities say today's raids and arrests are just the beginning and mo public officials could be charged. as it stands, the top official in prince george's county face federal charges related to a multi-year multi-agency bribery operation, and his wife, who was just elected to the county council, has also been caught up. we have a phone conversation in which authorities say the jo johnsons tried to hide huge amounts of money with the fbi at their door. but firs to darcy spencer at the green belt. darcy? >> jack jhnson is maintaining his innocence and says he'll stay on as county executive. prince george's county executive jack johnson emerged from u.s. district court after being released from federal custody. he declared his innocence that he tampered with evidence and

with witnesses. >> i am absolutely convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that i am going to be vindicated. >> reporter: johnson skmand his wife leslie are facing charges of a five-year probe of kickbacks for favorable treatment. >> these investigations involve allegations that real estate developers have been regularly paying off government officials in return for official actions. >> federal agents served search warrants at 13 locations friday, including johnson's office in the county administration building in upper marl boro and at their home. he conspired to receive a check from an unnamed developer. >> leslie johnson flushed the check down the toilet. >> federal prosecutors said they had secretly been listening to johnson's conversations for more than a year. >> fbi agents have obtained courtorder wire taps that have

been in place since september 2009. >> prosecutors say there will be more people, possibly more county officials, as well as developers, chged in the coming days. >> today's law enforcement investigation is the tip of the iceberg. what i mean by that is it is part of a broader, ongoing investigation. >> we are committed to putting an end to public officials who dishonor their office by accepting bribes in exchange for favorable treatment. >> johnson says he'll stay on as county executive for t remaining three weeks left in his term and he'll have to do that while wearing a court-ordered electronic monitoring device to ensure that he doesn't leave the area. johnson is required to stay at home. he can only goout of his house to go to work or meet with his doctor or with his lawyers. the johnsons were also ordered to surrender their passports. they're due back in court next month, botof them facing up to 20 years in prison on each of the two charges.

reporting live from greenbelt, darcy spencer, news4. back to you. >> darcy, thank you. >> those raids followed a meeting in which he was alleged to have taken $15,000 from a developer. that meeting was this morning. but johnson wasn't arrested mediately. instead what happened next was caught ohis cell phone, which had been tapped. jackie bensen in their house in mitchellville. jackie? >> reporter: o of the most shocking things about this investigation is how the fbi were able to listen to what was going on inside the home of the most powerful couple in prince george's county. prince george's county executive jack johnson arrived home from his federal court appearance in a county-ordered chauffered sedan and dukd inside a partially open garage door to get inside. he was helping leslie, who was

helped inside by a member of the security deil. it comes across as panic inside the house hours before the couple were arrested. leslie calls her husband on his cell phone, which was tapped by the fbi. leslie johnson said, two women are at the door. jack johnson tells her, don't answer it. prosecutors allege that johnson directed his wife to the ster beoom to find a $100,000 check from a developer which was hidden in his underwear drawer. jack johnson says, tear up the check. lease lee jo leslie johnson says, do you want me to put it down the toilet? jack replies, yes, flush that. the sound of a toilet flushing was heard. the fbi called in a plumber to check the drain. >> they're just asking me to checka couple things for them. >> reporter: the court affidavit contains an intimate, embarrassing allegation that nearly $80,000 was found concealed on leslie johnson's

person when she was arrested. jack johnson tells his wife to put the cash in her underwear. she replies, i have it in my bra. neighbors inside this quiet cull did i sack -- cud-de-sac are sh. >> they've been good to us. the johnsons did have a visit or inside their home, an attorney working on their case. security guards were caught by surprise as federal agents executed a search warrant there at the same time jack johnson's house was beg raided. they spent nearly eight hours in the county executive seat. prince george's county is abuzz with news of the arrest. >> he served this community, honestly served this county, honestly served this community, and i don't believe everything that's been said about him.

>> i don't think they would arrest him if they didn't have evidence. >> you can read the entire ten-page affidavit filed in the case against jack and leslie johnson. we've put it on our web site. d.c. fire officials for the fit time commented about allegations that two firefighters, emts, delayed responding to a 911 call, a call in which a woman died. the incident happened back on september 29th. firefighters got there in just a few minutes, but sources say the ambulance didn't arrive until at least 16 minutes later. sources tell news4 the medics were temporarily aigned to a station only a few blocks away. but a gps tracker shows they were actually several miles away at a fire station where they would end their shift. >> it's very likely a paramedic arrived within a couple minutes. i would be surprised ifhere wasn't a medic on that first responder unit, so, therefore, i would think in this case that

the supreme court refused to block enforcement of the don't ask, don't tell policy whi an appeals court considers the case. a gay rights group asked the supreme court to suspend the ban while the decision is being decided. a ban prohibiting open gay soldiers violates the rights of gay americans. they're leaving arizona in droves, even though the federal courts have struck down major portions of that state's anti-illegal iigration law. a new study using information from the latest census report shows that about 100,000 latinos have left the state since the debate about a tough new immigration law began. 23,000 are thought to have moved back to mexico. the study does not specify how many were legal or illegal immigrants. >> a news helicopter that made

temperatures tomorrow very close to wherehey were todayñi with a high near7 degrees. here's what's happening across the region and across the nation right now. big storm towards the midwestñi bringing in some pretty good snow in eastern portio of nebraska. that's because of a ridge of high pressure. on the west side that's where the colder air is, but right underneath it, that's where we're seeing that nice, tranqui weather that brought us so much sunshineñrover t over the last days. it will continue to stay there tomorrow. but this cold front makes its way to us on sunday and into monday. sunday still a good day, monday still a good day, but then the pattern shifts. the front moves through and the tropical low pressure moves in from the east, giving us a rather chilly, middle and end to next week. again, it's not going to be all that cold, just cooler than it has been. tomorrow morning, chilly start, 28 to 39 degrees. but n't worry, it's going to warm up veryçó rapidly. by 9:00 or 10:00, you'll be able

salvation army bell ringers face a new challenge as they hit the streets this year. giant food store has changed its

policy on when crtable group can solicit outside their stores. the company is limiting soliciting for six days a month for four hours at a ti for the salvation army. giant says it's making the move for its customers. the salvation army says half of the $1.3 milln raised by local bell ringers last year came from kettles outside giant stores. jim? after 160 years, the smithsonian museum could start charging admission. they suggested congress cut $225 million from the smithsonian budget and to begin charging admission fees to make up for the lost money. some are afraid that fees would prevent low-income families and school groupfrom visiting. smithsonian museums have been free since they were founded back in
