>> reporter: crime zeen tape greeted the parishioners. a church member found a gy bag near the entrance. >> when he inspected the bag, there was an infant, baby girl, only hours old, found inside the bag. >> reporter: the newborn was wrapped in towels, it's cord still attached. authorities werecalled. parishioners were told of the discovery at the start of the service. >> there was few oh, mys, a few deep breathes and the priest was a little emotional in delivering the news. >> the downside of that is it's sad. obviously, somebody that dfsht didn't felt like they didn't have any other answer >> reporter: the safe haven law says a baby can be left at a hospital or fire station within 14 days of birth if parent ks

not care for it. while the church is not officially a safe haven location, they believed she would be found quickly. >> on the one hand, we're grateful. on the other hand, wre saddened that someone found themselves in this moment of despair. >> reporter: police say they want to tlk to the moth out of concern for her health because she may be in need of medical attention. the parishioners find comfort knowing the baby is safe. >> we think it's a blessing. >> the baby appears to be full term and in good health. she is believed to have been born between midnight and 6:00 this morning. a man awakened this morning to one trying to get in to his house. he warned he had a gun, but when the guy within the stop, he shot him. it aears the intruder may have been at the wrong address.

darcy spencer is live at headquarters tonight. how did this happen? >> reporter: police are saying it appears this itruder was intoxicated. he told police he live nd that apartment building, but so far, they have not been able to verify that information. the man who fired h gun spoke to news 4. he says he should not face charges because he was defending himself. >> i was terrified, honestly. >> repter: this man, who doesn't want to be identified, shot and wounded an intruder who was trying to get into his apartment sunday morning. >> i hear the glass start breaking, i went and grabbed my shotgun. >> reporter: the resident says fearing for his life, took action to defend himself. >> i ve a verbal warning not to enter the household. they kept trying come in. i fired one shot to the bottom right corner of the window,

hoping to scare them off, but actually did in fact hit the person. >> repter: police are investigating the case a a possible burglary. they say the intruder told them he lived in the building. >> the homeowners who discharged the gun did not know the individual. individual didn't have permission to be there. he did break the window. he sfered lacerations to his hands from trying to break the window. >> reporter: police say it does not appear the resident will face charges. >> you can discharge a weapon to protect yourself against a tress passer, an individual. >> reporter: but the resident says police told him it's not an en and shut case. >> he said tt because the person wasn't actually in the house, i could face charges, but i think that's some bull because if somebody came in your house or was trying to come in, you

would do the same thing. >> reporter: police sa fortunely, the shotgun was loaded with bird shot and the suspect was not seriously injured. he is expected to survive. he is still in the hospital c. the state's attorneys office will review to determine if the resident will face charges. could have been far worse. jack johnson's arrest is expectedo be the beginning of a period of legal turmoil for prince george's county. officials say more arrests are expected later this week. the county executive arrested friday and charged with tampering of evidence and aiding and abedding. members of the johnson's church northwest prayed for the county.

what most people seem to think. if we were wrong all the time, you wouldn't be watching right now. outside, plenty of sunshine on your sunday. this was the last of the really nice days we're going to have around here at least for a little while. the cherry trees, the second season of the cherry blossoms in bright blaze red out this this time of the year. we won't have to worry about color on the cherry trees until last week of march, first week of april. 65 our high today. that made seven days in a row with temperatures 60 degrees or higher. we're at 57 with increasing clouds here in washington. temperatures are in the mid-50s toward the blue ridge. dry around the washington area, but a couple ofsprinkles. fairly steady progress to the north, so the trajectory for most of that is going to take it
