>> reporter: i'm not exactly sure what you hav already said, this has been a real rush, it's taken everybody by surprise, including the international prs and we're all here scurrying trying to get into position here outside buckingham palace to figure out this very succinct announcement from clarence house. i'll take a little bit of time to repeat what has been said. this is coming from the prince of wales. he says inhis short statement that he is delighted to announce the engagement of prince william, his son, obviously to ms. katharine middleton. this will take place sometime in the spring or summer of 2011. no specific date, there's been all kinds of speculation, how many spots have we done on the speculation in the past six months or a year? but he says this will take place in london, further details will

be announced in due course. here's where there's news, prince william and kate middleton actually got engaged in october. there was a very secret safari that they went on in kenya in africa. in fact it was a game reserve belonging to a former girlfriend, who is now a very close friend. they spend ten days there in the wilderness of kenya. this is a present b william to himsf to mark the fact that he had aduated, got his wings from the royal air force and became officially an officer in the search and rescue field. the statement goes on to say that prince william has now notified the queen and other family members and he also sought the permission of the

middleton family, specifically mentioning mr. middleton, michael middleton, the father. following the announcement of this short statement, the couple will be living in north wales, they already have a small cottage up there where prince william who's based in north wales, manages to break away and se his fiance to be, now fiance and to be wife. now they will become husband and wife up there in north wales as william pursues a career as a search and rescue pilot, and of course the king of england. this phase of his life could last three years or so. >> any public reaction yet to the news? >> reporter: well, we're hearing a lot of sirens, but i don't think that has anything to do

they're already under tremendous scrutiny, do you think we're going to be seeing a step up of them being followed around? we remember the images of diana being followed around by the media, what do you predict now. >> at first there will be a lot of interest from cameras and photographers wanting to chase after the royal couple. but one must remember as soon as she's engaged, unlike diana when she died who didn't have scotland yard protection, under her own direction, she'll probably be known as princess katharine when she gets married in probably july next year. she'll have a team of four armed officers guarding her. i think the photographers will be a little bit wary of taking that on. >> robert johnson this morning, thanks very much robert for your perspective. brian williams recently had a chance to talk to prince charles and he shared some advice f his son. take a look.

saying rangel has known this was coming for a long time, they want to finish up before this congress es ande're not talking about anything criminal here if he is found guilty of these offenses, it could mean something like a reprimand from his colleagues. what can president obama hope to accomplish with a lame duck congre? richard wolfe is authorf new book "survival" the struggle for survival inside the white house. i want to talk about some of these developments in washington. as kelly just pointed out. mitch mcconnell has done this about face, supports the ban on earmarks, what does that say about the power of the tea party? has it alrea been unleashed in washington? >> it's not the tea party, it's a movement, it's a sense of reform that we saw in 2006 and 2008 and it's something the president has wanted for a long time. but he also passed a giant sete bill with over 2,000 earmarks. so it's time for him to undo

what he has done in the white house. >> they're all feeling the presre, this is an establishment that has enjoyed the earmark system. if they don't change now, there will be another change in election two years from now. >> we also heard sarah palin say she might run for president if there's no one else to do it. what does the white house feel about a palin candidacy? >> they love it. theyhink she is a deeply flawed candidate, she will expose all sorts of divisions inside the party. this is a fight they want to have. ey definitely want to be running against her because they kind of enjoyed it last time. >> two democratic pollsters also work for fox news and they stirred things up when they said the president should not run for re-election in 2012, they argued if he didn't run, he could focus totallon policy instead of

politics. has the white house had any reaction to that? >> that's not advice they're oking for right now. this is a very competitive president. it didn't go unnoticed that one of these fox news pollsters happens to be closely aligned with the former clinton campaign. so there's some resentment there. two of them, hillary and the president, secretary of state and the president clearly have patched up a lot of their differences, they're working well together. but the staff level, the advisors, these are people who want to revisit and maybe seek vindicatio >>nd there's also a battle going on between the revivalist and the survivalists. >> on the survivalist side, you have people who want to revitalize the campaign. they feel that long the way he's diluted that and he's an

and hit and killed him. so that driver is now in prison for it. but now he's blaming the boy's parents and suing them saying they're responsible because he wasn't wearing a helmet. the tributes are still up on route 69 in the very spot where matthew kenny was killed in 2007, hit by a speeding car. at only 14 years old this middle school football star was brain dead >> what happened is just horrible, it affected everyone in the town of prospect and we all miss him a lot. >> reporter: the pain never stops of crse for parents who lose a child, but for matthew kenny's family, years later the pain just got worse. david weaving, the man driving the car thatilled matthew, the man who's been convicted of manslaughter in the crash is suing the victim'sfamily. believe ior not, he wants money from them. >> we are outraged, it's

despicable. >> reporter: weaving is sitting in prison serving a ten-ar sentence. when matthew's family filed a wrongful death suit against him, he sued them right back. accusing matthew's parents of negligence, saying they're responsible for their o son's death, saying they failed as parents ensure he was wearing a helmet. he's aing for $15,000 in damages. >> the family has lost a son, they have endured a trial and they're going to revisit it with his lawsuit and his claims saying he is the one who suffered. >> reporter: matthew's parents are livid. matthew's mother told the a.p. it drags the pain on. >> he can say i shouldn't have been convicted, he can say there are defenses in the context of a civil lawsuit, but to say this

13-year-old sarah maynard who is safe, but now the growing concern that the other three people still missing may not be found alive. the search efforts continued late into monday night and that young girl sar maynard i back home safely with her family. but we're also learning new details about what led investigators to the manho's charged with her kidnapping. he will make his first appearance in court later today. at a vigil monday night, this small ohio communi gathered together, holding on to candles and to hope. >> it's a very tight community and it's just devastating what's haened. >> a lot of people are vy scar. >> it's something you never think about happening in this little town. >> reporter: with three of the four still missing, tina herrmann, her son kodi and sharon stng. >> the key witness in this case survived the kidnapping,

13-year-old sah maynard, herrmann's daughterho was found tied up and gagged in the basement of matthew's homes saturday morning. >> a 13-year-old girleing held captive for four days by a total stranger, i would call her the epitome of bravery. >> reporter: authorities say the 30-year-old suspect is an ex-con having served time in prison for arson, hoffman is now behind bars again and not cooperating with detectives. >> he really was a weirdo. there's a hammock where he would sit and watch people, he's just different. >> reporter: late monday, an apparent break as searchers pulled an abandon car from a pond near hoffman's home, they later determined that car was unrelated to this crime. then they found suspicious items in a nearby park, but no sign of the missing three. >> people see something, clothing, something out of the

ordinary, it cou contain something that wneed to further this investigation. >>eporter: this bizarre mission began last wednesday when herrmann's co-workers became concerned that she didn't show up for work. investigators found unusual amounts of blood in that family home. >> the investigation shows that all four of themid not leave by their own choice. >> reporter: investigators say they're reviewing surveillance tape from this walmart where hoffman's r the suspect reportedly bought a tarp. a cruel wait for this ente community and for this brave young girl. certainly one remarkable young girl, sarah maynard, investigators will return to that foundation and they're going to go back to that lake and also to the wooded areas neby in search of any evidence in this case. steve thompson is stephanie

>>r. thompson, you talked about the police doing an excellent job. what have they told you and what questions do you wish they would answer? >> they told us basically what you know, we're actually getting it at the same time. i wish the communication was a little bit stronger between us. i do know that it is an investigation and they have to keep certain things to themselves. but it would be more helpful for the families if we knew a little bit more, just anything, just a comment. i know they're very busy, we don't want to take any ofheir time away in the investigation, the most important thing is getting our loved ones back to us. >>nd on that point, police have been saying, mr. thompson is that ty don't believe this was a home invasion, ty go so far as to say that matthew

hoffman the suspect in this case so far may be had been known to tina and to steanie or that he was making himself known to them. do you know anything? have you ever heard of him before from your daughter? do you know people in the community who knew this man? >> no. no, did not know him. e first time i even seen a picture of him was just the other day. i have no idea how that connection was ever made. from all indications, what i've talked to from neighbors and so forth, the type of person that he was, i don't think either one of the girls would have been really talking with him or just hanging out with him. it's just, to me, doesn't sound possible. but who knows? i mean hopefully we'll find that answer out soon. >> we're all listening and hoping for you, your daughter and your family. thank you mr. thompson this

morng for speaking to us. >> thank yo let's now bring in criminal profiler pat brown, she's the author of "the profiler" my lif hunting serial killers and psychopaths. police sound pretty pessimistic, do you think the police know mo than they're letting on? >> i would guess so. i'mure the young girl possibly told the something that they are leaning on, that leads them to believe that the other three are not alive. mostly because fir of all the blood in the home which indicates that one person was severely injured and that wouldn't be the teenaged girl and that leaves two and there are witnesses to what went down. clearly most people don't leave witnesses out there. >> and you don't want police to give up too soon is, so that's another factor in the case. >> they found the teenaged girl so thers always a possibility that perhaps the others are being kept someplace for some reason. she was kept, so we don't really know yet.

there something about the timing today that would make it interesting? >> well, i think perhaps the timing has been timed to coincide with prince william's return from afghanistan. he was out there for remembrance sunday which is a very important occasioncross the world and it went from one good news story to another. what surprised me about the announcement is that it is an ocber engagement not february. when they announce their engagement, they announce much closer than the wedding. the question is kate going to end up at christmas dinner with the royals? >> what is expected in terms of the wedding? are we expecting a large, flashy wedding of the sort of diane-charles kind of caliber? >> well, by implication, you know, it's going to have to be quite a grand affair. however, obviously, we're all living proof of austere times and hard tim across the world.
