. while most of us were sound asleep, devastating storms blew through. post office buildings damaged. glass from dozens of vehicles blown out. roofs ripped off buildings and poles and trees bent. we have complete coverage of the overnight storms and we begin with that windy and while weather. good afternoon. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. porful storms blew through leaving a lot of damage in their wake. several home and businesses were damaged including the a.j. wright store off rhode island in northeast where a huge air conditioning union was tossed from the roof to the ground. as the post office distribution center on brentod avenue, the back wall was literally knocked out. one worker inside that she heard a loud boom while it was happeng and 50 or more vehicles parked beside the building are also damaged. news4's megan mcgrath has more on the mess left behind in the northeast. >> reporr: roofing material wrapped around a light pole. a huge air conditioning unit

once up on the roof of the a.j. wright store, now smashed into pieces in the parking lot. it was quite a storm. >> it sounded like another train wreck or something like that. i could hear things blowing. >> reporter: inspectors used a ard truck to look at a damaged rowhouse. the strong winds ripped off sections of the roof and smashed windows. at the home depot, the outdoor garden display was leveled. tom was awakened by the terrible racket. >> it woke me d my wife up. we got up and heard the windows begin to rattle and we got up. we were going to stay in the basement and lay on the floor. it only lasted, less than ten minutes. i got up and heard something fell. and it was trees falling in my yard. >> repter: as the sun came out association did the wo chippers. crews began chopping up fallen

trees, carefully working around downed power lines. residents on tenth street surveyed the damage. >> this old, 100-year-old tree uprooted and fell on my husband's truck. >> that does not look good. >> no, it does not. he will come home to th on monday. >> i stood on my por when the first tree fell. and when, it was like the wizard have oz. reporter: while there was quite a bit of damage in northeast, fortunately there were no reported injuries. in brentwood, megan mcgrath, news4. parts of arlington look like a disaster area today. strong winds toppled trees that brought down power lines there, too. but kim her by found some folk who are thankful thing were not worse. >> reporter: people in arlington describing this as a quicknd powerful storm. the most dramatic image we found in arlington county right here at the corner of george mason and north 16th. a utility pole snapped in half.

the top half, daling perilously for anyone traveling below. before police arrived, news4 spotted a few drivers paing right underneath the suspended spear. >> it was a mess. the winds came up. it went completely insane. >> reporter: thr lines ran to this pole. altogether, 60,000 volts. the equivalent of a bolt of lightning. >> we heard crashing down on the roof. crashing and rolling and hitting in the yard. and it was incredible. it goes to show you you can't mess with mother nature. >> reporter: the explosion woke upmost people trying to sleep in theeighborhood. >> the sound and the wind was incredible. about 1:00, leaves swirling and a complete whiteout in my backyard. >> reporter: even his so call weather dog. aurora fur-ealis was in bed and knew something was wrong. they never lost power but did transfer from one energy source to another.

although physicians' offices on property did go dark. >> before canceling our patients for the morning, got off the phone with my boss. we're going to see what happens. i'mrying to get some information to see if we can open up later. there is a chance of power later on. >> reporter: around the corner, split tree after split tree. we're fairly certain toyota never intended this kind of electric car. an enormous oak tree used to stand here. when it fell it took a huge chunk of the road with it. it ao happened to fall the right way. >> we had a big almost freight train. we tried to get out and run outupstairs. the next thing the tree was laying that way. >> reporter: the pilot who owns this house took one look at his shattered shingles and declared it a micro burst. a violent down burst of air just shy of a tornado. just enough to tangle morning traffic. >> reporter: the detour catching some off guard. at one point, virginia dominion

customers, at least 40,000 of them with no power. news4. >> and at last check crews were still on the scene at 16th and george mason. trying to restore power to the customers. fewer than 500 virginia dominion customers are still waiting for power. >> the storm damage is even worse in baltimore where there have been some injuries reported. more than 200 homes were damaged. windusts ripped off roofs. a number of them. one roof was found a block away from its house. trees were uprooted and caused massive power outages. the injuries were record from residents in the dutch village townhome communicate. an emergency shelter has been set up to help those displaced by the storms. baltimore's mayor that it is a miracle that no one was killed. >> another stormy night in store for us or are we in e zpleer. >> veronica johnson is in the storm center. >> the word is that we are in

the clear. no srm for us tonight. in fact, the windwill b settling, too. i'll take you back to yesterday. late last night between midnight and 2:00 a.m. all this is squall line forming ahead of the main weather front. there are some powerful down drafts. imagine thought racing eastward. at 50 miles an hour, the individual thunderstorms at 30. so in some instances, some locations, there were winds around 80-mile-an-hour. take a look at the dots. that's where the damage was to pick it apart. trees down again around chevy chase, prince george's county, baxter rad and also in baltimore county. the parkville area down into virginia, fairfax county, too with lots of damage. mother nature's alarm clock. we have some drier air that has been moving in. we'll see some mostly clear skies for the early part of the night. then on the other side of that, a few clouds back by tomorrow

morning. only a few. gusts to 38. that was at 11:00 a.m. we're seeing our winds dying down. the temperature will drop to 48 degrs by 11:00 p.m. by the time we get to tomorrow morning, down to about 41 degrees. so some early sun for tomorrow. we'll get some clouds back tomorrow and we'll talk about the possibility of some sprinkles and of course we'll take an early look at the upcoming weekend. jim? pat? >> thanks. right now germany is stepping up transit security because of concern about a possible terror strike. germany's interior minister told reporters faye that police are increasing security measures at train stations and airports. german officials say a foreign intelligence service provided them with conete information about a planned attack at the end of ts month and they stay intelligence matches leads they've gathered on their own. this is the first time concrete intelligence has been mentioned in connection with possible terror attacks in europe. one of washington's most

notorious murder cases is now in its final chapters. juror in the chandra levy murder ial are now deliberating in d.c. superior court. ingmar guandique is facing murder charges in the 2001 disappearance and death of levy. the jury is now weighing three options. guilty of first-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder, or not guilty. in closing arguments yesterday, prosecutors said levy's deat fits the pattern of other crimes committed by guandique in rock creek park. his defense lawyer argued there is no hard evidence and that there were no eyewitnesses linking guandique to levy. we have developing news in politics. late this afternoon nbc news has just declared alaska senator lisa murkowski the winner in her re-election bid. she ran as a write-in candidate after losing the republican primary to a candidate backed by sarah palin and the tea party. sources tell nbc that she will

declare victory tonight. in other developments, house speaker nancy pelosi was reelected to a leadership position despite opposition from some democrats w argued it was time for a change. and john boehner was elected speaker of the house. we'l head out to the roads and find out how the rus hour is going. >> ashley is behind the wheel. how are we rolling on this wednesday, ash? >> we're starting off with delays. we can't catch a break out there. we do have a lot of traffic signals due to last night's storms. most of the major branches and things like that have been cleared. we don't have any trouble spots as far as that's concerned. let's dive into the capitol beltway. inner loop and outer loop. the inner loop begins along the toll road and it will continue. let's take a trip along the beltway headed towd river road. headed away from us toward the top of the screen. continue that slow traffic and then headed around, approaching 270 and then past 270 as you

a controversial alcoholic energy drink is losing its added jolt. >> yeah. caffeine is coming out of the four loko drink. meanwhile the fda has sent warning letters to four manufacturers of the energy drinks staying caffeine added to these beverages is an unsafe food additive

they said the government could seize the drink if t companies continue to make them. the drink has been banned in four states after several young drinkers were hospitalized. >> we heard it. >> downed trees and limbs. >> and hopefullyhe folks have gotten a chance to clean up a bit despite the wind. the wind will be decreasing during the overnight period. right now a pretty nic looking sky. 59 is the temperature. the dew point at 34 degrees. current winds at 1 miles an hour and earlier today. we had a gust that was close to 40 miles per hour. here, some of the gusts came through withn actual line. that squall line last night. 57-mile-per-hour gusts. langley air force base and right at 54, right near d.c. 48 degrees by 11:00 p.m. and then into the low 40s by tomorrow morning. down to the mid 30s and a little wind. for the most part it will be decreasing. same thing with the cloud cover. it should be some pretty good viewing for the leonid meteor

showers. what settings to put your cara on. here's a look at the northeast cornerf the country. some slightly cooler air. and low presre off to the west. this guy around oklahoma and it is going to be coming off to the east. it will be weakening as it heads off to the east. for us, here's what you can expect tomorrow. first, the winds will decrease toght and we start tomorrow with a bit of sunshine. and then clouds will fill back in where it will be mostly sunny and partly sunny and mosy cloudy and could puck up a sprinkle between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. high pressure and sunshine to friday. it is looking like a really nice weekend coming up. turning cooler here. 57o 54 for the evening forecast. again, the wind, a little bit for the evening. then it will be dropping throughout the overnight.

trees. at last check, fewer than 500 customers in northern virginia and about 5,500 petco customer are thout power. the jury is deciding the fate of ingmar guandique, the man on trial for the murder of chandra levy. the panel could come back with a murder verdict or he could be found not guilty. we'll have a live report at 5:00 from pat collins. nbc news has named alaska senator lisa murkowskis the winner of the alaska senate campaign. she ran as a write-in candidate after losing the republican primary. meanwhile house democrats have reelected nancy pelosi as their leader. it was not a slam-dunk, allow. a significant percentage of house democrats felt it was time for new leadership and voted again her. stocks ended the day mixed with the dow dropping 15 points. the s&p 500 will closed up by less than a point. the debate over new airlines

security procedures is heating up. the biggest complaint is that they are too invasive. however, tsa official said the screening is necessy to keep passenger safe and that those who refuse won't be allowed to get on board planes. for million of traveling americans, and those who represent them in congress, the issue over airport security has taken a personal turn. >> i wouldn't want my wife to be touched in a way these folks are being touch. >> at a hearing on capitol hill, john said he and homeland security secretary janet napolitano have themselves undergone the new more invasive pat-downs. >> do i undetand the sensitivity of people, yes. am i going to change the pocies, no. >> reporter: pointing to the attempted christmas day underwear bomb, she maintained the searches are necessary. germany today upped the airport security amid concrete information about a planned attack there at the end of november.

while just this week, a bill was introduced in congress required screening for 100% of cargo freight shipped to the u.s. after explosives were found hidden in toner cartridges last month. back at the airport, some passenger insist, body scanners and the alter national pat-downs on them are too much. while pilots claim they should be exempted. >> the tsa by applyingthese ridiculous standards to the crew members is wasting resources from the true threat. >> officials say they're open to relaxing the rules for crew and they'reesting systems li this one used in amsterdam that doesn't show bodies in detail. >> there is a high rate of false positives. >> reporter: for now, securi will stay as is. while the debate over privacy unlikely to go anywhere. now, she pointed out the pat-downare only for passenger who require extra screening or who refuse to go through body scan machine. since congressman dated use of

here's a man who can be seem to get it in gear. when he got out of car he left it in reverse an the car slammed into the officer's cruiser. if that weren't bad enough, the car then went forward and slammed into an air pump. iteem after hitting the cruiser, he put it into dve instead of park. it happened last saturday at a gas station in laguna beach, lifornia, and yes, this guy was arrested. >> "d" is for drive.
