that storm the left a big mess behind. last night strong winds peeled away the roof of an apartment building. three people were injured after the storm blew through there. virginia didn't escape the storm. power lines were snapped in two and trees and debris, there was some damage in the district. jane watrel joins us from the post office in northeast with more. >> the storm roared through brentwood here in northeast. about 1:00 this morning. ripping away part of the building in a matter of inutes. witnses say it was like someone opened fire. the windows in over 130 postal vehicles were either blown out or pitted by stones. the result of a strong fraek early morning storm. >> the wind was relentless. and windshields were bued out. you can se it pittedith the stone from the ground. they were picked up and rolled around. >> reporter: behind the

processing facility, a two-stor wall ill ploeded from the force of the winds. oh 190 employees were inside at the time. and were quickl evacuated. >> reporter: two were treated for minor sapes. no one he will was hurt. >> fortunately the male processing area in this part of the building was em. when the force of the storm hit. >> it is really bad. you can see it is brick, cindier block. never in my wildest imagination would it that something like that would tear through here and have that much damage in such a quk moment of time. >> reporter: people who live less than a mile from the postal center felt the full force of the storm as well. on bryant street northeast, the roaring winds brought down trees and power lines. making for tense moment >> i just fell to the floor. there was this rattling the windows. all of a surkd i felt this big ball of lightning come in the window.

so i stayed on the floor for a while until the wind had seased. >> reporter: while many people we talked to that saw and hea the storm were convinced it was a tornado, according to the national weather service, it was not. we have no word on the damage here at this postal facility. reporting live in northeast, jane watrel. back to you. >> all right. thank you. doug kammerer here to tell us about the storm that caused that damage. >> it was amazing, watching this outside. one second it's raining. then the next, defitely sounded like a freight train with a punch of air at about 50 miles an hour. some aas at 70 miles an hour. up and down the eastoast from north carolina toward new york. we saw winds over 60 miles an hour. and over 120 sphere reports. this wasne of them. down toward virginia beach. numerous people without power down here. trees down, trailers were destroyed in this area as they, too, saw straight line wind

damage. there were no reports of tornadoes with this system. a lot of you said it sounded like a tornado. i can concur with that. it definitely sounded like it might have been something of that. these are straight light winds coming at you. and this is how it formed. a line of storms forming just off to the west. these storm are moving at 60 miles an hour. any time you see the pushout, that's where it came from. right through district and prince george's county. baimore seeing those strong winds and they continue right toward philadelphia. and right toward new york city as well. in behind it, we're calming down. much calmer out there. you can see across our region. no rn to talk about. this will be a if you areally tranquil night. the winds are calming down. as far athe temperatur go, we're at 55 degrees. the winds out of the west at ten miles per hour. what is behind this system? things will change in a big way and i'll show you what's happening in my full forecast.

the head of the transportation security agency was on the defensive today during a visit up on capitol hill. a lot of people are upset over the new airport screening procedures. but john is defending the new scanners. he insists they're necessary to keep travelers safe. >> reporter: a lot of people talking about. thishey described an outcry over the new airport screening procedures. with an estimated 6 million americans about to travel by a in the next week or soaring it is unlikely anything will change. for million of traveling americans and those who represent them in congress, the issue of personal security has ten a personal turn. >> i wouldn't want my wifeo be touched in that way will. >> reporter: at a hearing on capitohill, he said he and homeland security secretary

detail. >> there are currentl a high rate of false positis. >> reporter: for now security will stay as is while the debate over policy is unlikely to go anywhere. the new poll shows about 80% of american don't have a problem with the increased screening. meantime, it was pointed out the pat-downs are only for those who need additional screening or for those who refe to go through body scanning machine. and congress did mandate the use of the body scanners so it is unlikely lawmaker will alter that. germany is stepping up transportation security because of cncern about a possible terror strike. policere increasing security measures in airports, train stations and other possible targs. a foreign intelligence service provided them with concrete informing about a planned attack at the end of november. they said the intelligence matches leads they've gathered on their own. this is the first time concrete

intelligence has been mentioned in quick possible attacks in europe. and viktor bout eered a not guilty plea. he was extra gritd thailand yesterday, despite angry objections from the russian government. u.s. prosecutors have been after him for years. they say he is an international arms trafficker and that he supported terrorists trying to overthrow colombian vernment. thorities have will said he sold weapon to the taliban in afghanistan. his extra dig come four days before a court order would have expired and allowed him to retu home to moscow. jurors were not able to reach a verdict today in their deliberations in the chandra levy murder trial. they'll go back at it tomorrow. the jury is deliberating the evidence against guandique, who is accused of killing levy. he is facing life in prison if convicted.

jail house stories. how to make a fire out of a battery. how to fashion a plastic bottle into a knife to protect yourself. how to use a staple as a happened cuff key. he seemed to have their attention. for a time males was guandique's cell mate. that he said guandique told him that he killed chandra levy. that he said guandiqueold hum he pulled her from the trail, that he struggled with her and stole her fanny pack. the defense saidmorales is a liar. that he made this all up so he could get out of jail early. there are other circumstantial evidence here. two other women whoay guandique attacked them in the pa. a land lady who said she saw scratches on guandique's face day chandra levy does appeared. and a pen pal who said guandique talked about a dead woman. but whether or not the jury believes armando the mouse

university of california students were arrested here. a board of regents is set to vote tomorw on raising the cost of tuition by 8%. officials say the increase is necessary becse california has slashed funning to its ten campus university systems. new health concerns about former vice president dick cheney he appeared tn and frail at a ground breaking ceremony yesterday. his spokesman said cheney lost weight ding his recent stay in a spital. he had hard surgery over the summer. mr. cheney is hoping to keep the weight off to keep his heart althy. he was at the ground breaking ceremony for the president did he know center in dallas. developing news in politics late ts afternoon. nbc news declared alaska senator lisa murkowski the winner in her reelection bid. in other developments, nancy pelosi was reelected to a leadership position.

the same powerful storms that hit us blew through new jersey flupg over several all planes. a spokesman at the airport said crews were able to keep the runways clear and there were no flight delays during the stormy weather. pepco is implementing the plan it promised following a series of storm last summer that left customer in the dark for days. among the highlights is a new networkystem that identifies trouble and reroutes power

automatically. there is an increased effort to trip trees and remove dead ones. and there isn effort to replace oriole underground cables. the company came under fire when hundreds of thousands were left without power for days. the utility plan to make major improvements in an effort to ke that from happening again. >> doug is here with our weather. you were warning about high winds. >> i went right to sleep. >> i was right here wen those storm come through. i love severe weather. i really enjoy watching. we don't want to see anybody get hurt or any kind of damage. you went utside right when this was happening. we saw the rain coming down. the winds coming down. a lot of people saying, it sounded like a freight train. like a tornado. you agree with you. it was like that with 60ile-an-hour winds.

it was quite amazing. out there, we still saw winds. look at this. not a good day to walk along the avenue. this is just soufd chevy chase circled. here's the good news. normally this time of year you have a storm system come through, it will bring through much colder air. today we did not have that. the temperatures stayed in the mid 50s. this was the scene here with the leaves blowing in the trees. we made it all the way to 65 degrees. when was that? 12:47 last night as the the storm system approached. that cold front moved through. the temperatures shot up by as much as ten degrees. we were at 65 at 12:47. that was official and that was the same time as that high temperature. the low was this afternoon. coming in at around 54 degre. what are we seeing? currently, 55 degrees.

winds out of west at ten miles an hour. dew point the 33 degrees. that mean we are drying out this evening. we will continue to dry out and the winds will continue to die down. 51 in sterng. frif in manassas. you can see we're staing to cool down into the 40s. it is going to be a rather chilly night tonight. the winds are dying don. 21-mile-an-hour wind gusts. back toward winchester, up toward baltimore, about 21 miles an hour. most of the area, no longer seeing wind gusts over 20 miles an hour. still a little on the breezy side. maybe winds of 10 to 15. maybe up to 20. that's really going to be about it. this was the storm system. it formed along the mountains. look at this line. a complete line from knock state all the way down towa north carolina. over 120 wind reports. winds upwards of 50 or 60 miles an hour. look at that to baltimore, fully, toward zmork the northeast as well. an amaze go line of

thunderstorms that moved through. that line well into the atlantic oeflgs left-hand it we're seeing westerly winds. clearing, skies right now. we'll continue to see things calm down. >> news for richmond. they saw it as well. will he look at se video. this was some downed trees in their region. these weren't little trees. these were big trees. 20 to 30 miles an hour. then a punch of air coming in at zoi 70 miles an hour. you're going to get some damage. that's what they saw duringhe day down there. o night. windy conditions with winds upwards of 40 miles an hour. normally cooler air will get a little cool but not all that bad during the day tomorrow. we will watch another area of low pressure swing through. maybe a chance of a sprunk but i'm not expecting much in the way of rain. that whatever it will do is give us more cloud cover. then high pressure moves in on

friday. that means it will be rather cool. we'll see a lot of sunshine. overnight tonight, mostly clear skies. not a wad start to your thursday morning. we move through tomorrow. we will see temperatures, 54 to 57. on the cool side. maybe some sunshine early. mostly cloudy as it moves through. do not expect anything big from this next one. cooler air moving in. then a great day on saturday. a high near 60 with light winds. 55 degrees on sunday. high pressure tries to move back in. that will allow for nice weather toward next ek. 50s on monday. 60s on tuesday. i think some areas could be near 70 on tuesday. and then we get a ttle bit of a system coming in on wednesday. of course, that's thanksgiving eve. >> in time for the travel. >> this is one we'll be watching and we'll be watching what

with more on this. >> reporter: we're here in the corner of connecticut avenue and l streets. i want to take a look at the scene. you can see, connecticut avenue s been blocked off here. it caused quite a back-up here for traffic and motorists coming into the area. connecticut block off between l and k streets. that's because metro says about 3:15 this afternoon, because of construction work going on on street level apparently due to itial investigation, a jackhammer caused part of the ceiling in the metro to collapse on to the platform below. at this point, no one on the platform was injured. but i did get a chance to go downstairs and take a look. and there is concrete lying on the platform. it smashed on to a bench. now luckily, no one was sitting on tt bench below. there are no reported injuries at this hour. but for metro riders looking to come into this area and use the metro station, at this point, trains are still running but

they are running slower than usual. if you are coming into the area, know that your commute will be delayed because of the train service being delayed as well as connecticut avenue between l and k street being blocked off. that's the very latest. back to you in the studio. >> thank you. >> power crews are making progress, restoring service in our area folling storms. fewer than 100 customers in northern virginia. fewer than 3,000 pepco customers are without power now. the jury has ended the first day of deliberations in the chandra levy trial without reaching a verdict. they'lgo back at it again tomorrow. they're deciding the fate of ingmar guandique who was accused of killin levy. nurses at washiton hospital center have called off their plans for a one-day strike. they've threatened to walk off the job next wednesday. it is in quick an-on going contract dispute. the hospital and nurses union agreed to go back to the bargaining table know averting the walkout.

the two sides are at odds over wages and staffing issues. a d.c. public school teacher nearly was killed and attacked near the school. that woman was robbed and beaten just before noon on monday. the attack has prompted an increase in security presence inside and outside d.c. schools. craig melvin has our report. >> a teacher who teaches little kids, talking about beating a teacher up, that's just sad. >> reporter: chuck has lived in the neighborhood most of his life and said he's never heard of anything like this happening. c. police say around 11:45 moay morning, a 46-year-old elementary school spanish teacher was robbed, beaten, and left for dead. we're not identifying her because she is a crime victim. the teacher parks her car in the 1400 block of howard street. she gets out, crossesthe street. she crosses pommer roy. she is right across the street from the elementary school where she teaches. a guy wearing all black and a

mask approaches her and says give me your pocket book. she refuses. he takes out a gun and pistol whupz her. he hits her several time about the face a head shelf falls. takes the purse and her car. >> we found the car yesterday in the 4400 block of grant street northeast. so the car is being processed and hopefully we'll get some evidence out of that vehicle. >> reporter: according to the police report, during the attack the robber cracked the teacher's skull causing her brain to bleed. she was taken to howard university hospital where she has had at least two surgeries. >> we know about she is doing much better now. we have detectives going to the hospital to reenter view her to see if she has any more informing. >> reporter: the suspect was wearing all blacknd a mack. a d.c. public school spokesperson said uncreased security inside the school, d.c. police say they've step up patrols in the neighborhood. they're also warning potential victim. >> someone to manage your property. someone that has a weon.

>> reporter: news4. we've got some breaking news in the murder of d.c. school principal brian betts. court documents show a second suspect will plead guilty tomorrow to robbery. and using a gun during a crime. go go one of three teenagers was there in the night of the murder in april. authorities say betts was killed during a robbery attempt. another suspect, 19-year-old ahasn' saunders has pleaded guilty tohooting betts. lancaster faces a maximum 15 years on the robbery charge and a possible 20years on the gun charge. a new twist in the prince george's county corruption scandal. we're now learning the three police officers arrested may have been caught on videotape brking the law. >> one appeared in court today. did he so less then a week after county executive jack johnson and his wife were arrested on tampering and destruction of evidence charges. julie carry has our report.

>> reporter: that's what the attorney for prince george's officer sinisa simic had to say today. he lost his fight to keep simic free pending tal. he lamented that his client has been caught up in a frenzy surrounding the wide ranging corrtion probe tt resulted in the arrests of jack johnson and his wife. >> it has been a friendsy. i think everyone needs to process. needs to boring it out and let it go forwards in the normal course. that's what i was asking for today. >> reporter: as prosecutor laid out tir evidence, they revealed for first time they have videotape some of the alleged wrongdoing. they say investigators started watching simic and an accomplish after they learned several police officers were being paid to protect and transport illegal untaxed cigarettes and liquor. another defendant, the owner of several liquor stores, is accused of hing the officers. the assistant u.s. attorney told the judge today, investigators first wiretapped his cell phone.

some really ticked off passgers on a flight through europe recently. they were on a flight headed for france. it was forced by fog to did i have effort to belgium. is the passengers felt they had been unfairly treated so they held a sit-in overnight. the crew eventually left the plane. they turned off the lights on their way out. but they left the cockpit door open and the bathroom door locked. after five hours,ops came in and persuaded, we are told, the passengers to leave the plane? get on a bus.
