the roof fell onto the platform. nobody was hit. but now a busy downtown metro station is closed and there are concerns about the rest of the roof, and it's not clear if the station will reopen by morning. good evening. i'm doreen gentzler. >> and i'm jim vance. the trouble at the fragut north station began when road crews started jackhammering on the road above the station. that led to pieces falling onto e platform below. and now metro and d.c. transportation leaders say infrastructure plans might be to blame for it all. john shifrin has the latest. john? >> reporter: that's right, jim, we have learned that construction going on on connecticut avenue between k and l streets is wha caused the concrete block about the size of someone's head to go crashing down into the farragut station below. but what many riders were frustrated with were for hours

after the incident happened, the station was still open. during the height of rush hour wednesday evening trn after train got waved through the farragut north metro station, just part of the platform was shut down. dozens of concrete pieces were scattered everywhere and frustrated riders said they had no idea what was going . >> i think they need to do a better job of communicate ingwith their riders. they're not communicating with us. >> according to ddot, a piece of concrete fell onto thestation as crews were ripping up the road above to put a median on connecticut avenue. >> it showed a little more depth to the bottom of the roadway to the top of the tunnel within the metro station. so it appears we hit something, it fell through the ceiling, and then actually fellnto the station. >> reporter: according to metro, no one was hurt as the concrete

came smashing down around this bench area on a platform used by passengers traveling in both directions. but concerned riders say this is just another black eye for metro. >> i useto live in the district about ten years ago and i just moved back a few months ago, and i can tell a big change from when i lived here before and the way it is no >> what changed? >> many more delays, many more breakdowns and many more mechanical problems with the trains. >> at midnight, they began the process of inspecting the remainder of the ceiling to determine if the station is safe. as the investigation ontinues, this farragut station will remain closed f the rest of the night. metro will not determine whether it will open tomorrow morning until sometime early before the morning commute. we are live here on connecticut and l streets northwest. back to the studio. >> thanks, john. after lack of affordable grocery options, there are good news across the district

tonight. walmart announced it will be moving into three different neighborhoods. city leaders say they hope it will mean the end of shoppers fleeing to the suburbs. jockey bensen is at one of those locations. hi, jackie. >> and that means jobs, more than 1,000 of them. with two years, a walmart is expected to transform the section of these avenues near d.c. those who live and work within these areas of few retail options say it's good news. >> it's good for the community and i like shopping at walmart myself. >> i think that's nice. we need a walmart in this area. like in columbia, we have everything. we need something right here. reporter: according to walmart, there are currently plans of three stores of a radically new type, somewhat smaller for a city environment but with full grocery and pharmacy departments. the locations are 801 new jersey avenue northwest in a planned

mixed-use development. jersey and new york avenues, and 58th and northeast. >> we met with the developers who will be developing in ward 6 the new store for walmart. >> ward 6 councilmember tommy welles says he expects some concerns about walmart's record on labor practices. but the company has promised to hire some 1200 employees in neighborhoods where unemployment is as high as 50% gained his support with some conditions. >> as long as there is a commitment to fair wages, a commitment to being a good partner in the district of columbia, as having a good civic corporate responsibility in our city, then i think there is a place for them. >> reporter: walmart says if this works well, there could be even more ores in the city. doreen, back to you. >> all right, jackie bensen reporting. thank you, jackie. a schoolteacher remains in critical condition tonight after she was beaten and robbed outside an elementary school in

the district. the vicious attack happened just before noon on monday across from garnet wilkinson elementary school southeast. the gunman was masked. he demanded the teacherive him her purse. the teacher is in her 40s. she's on 4'9" tall and she refused. the robber hit her three times in the head with his gun. she's had two surgeries for bleeding in her brain. that robber has not been caught. security has been increased inside the school as well as in the surrounding neighborhood. >> d.c. police are also looking for somebody who was snachg iphones rit out of people's hands. there are at least fo street-level robberies over the weekend in northwest. in each case the victims were approached while talking or carrying their phones. there have also been steps in which the popular phones have been stolen off of restaurant

tables. police are asking you to be aware of your surroundings at all times and avoid walking alone at night. the jury in the chandra levy case will begin another day of deliberations tomorrow morning. the jurypent about six hours today going over details of the prosecution's case against ingmar guandique. he is the man accused of killing chandra levy. during that time they asked the judge for gloves that are used for handling evidence and for a photo of the accused killer that was taken in rock creek park. guandique is facing two counts of first-degree murder in the death. levy was killed in rock creek park back in 2001. defense lawyers argue there is no physical evidence that links guandique to chandra levy. in prince george's county today, one of three police officers arrested earlier this week appeared in court on drug trafficking charges. prosecutors reveal they have videotape evidence against

senese misi ca who is being held without bond after learning that officers were being paid to transport untaxed cigarettesnd liquor. a vast and furious storm left behind a big mess in our area. in maryland, the damage is widespread. strong winds peeled away the roof of an apartment building in baltimore. three people were injured there. the national weather service is still trying to figure out whether the winds were tornado strength. virginia power lines were snapped in two and trees and debris were tossed around in arlington. at one point 40,000 dominion, virginia residents were left in the dark. in our area, strong winds caused a wall to implode there overnight. two workers outside thefacility were treated for minor injuries. the powerful storm also damaged more than 130 postal delivery

security ainistration made the offer while he was visiting capitol hill today. his name is john pistol. he says those pat-downs and the new screening machis are necessary to keep travelers safe. travelers, though, say the body scans and the pat-downs are invasive. that issue likely will not be resolved before thanksgiving. lawmakers are not expected to take any action before next week. finger scanners will soon be in place in recreation centers in montgomery county. they look a little like this one. in january they will be used to identify member at three rec centers in the county. the plan is to expand them to all 33 montgomery rec centers andreplace the access cards people use now. the move to the scanners are expected to save the county $53,000 a year. the first medal recipient of honor since vietnam. we'll take you to the first

last week, nothing hpened, and then this week, everything seemed to happen. we have all of those winds -- some areas saw 70, even 80-mile-an-hour winds potentially from that stormast night. it was just aamazing, but today a big differce. most of the wind has now died down, and behind it se cooler air is now moving in across the area. outside right now, cool temperatures into the 30s, most everybody, at least, into t 40s. a high temperature today was actually around midnight. 12:47 this morning, we hit a high of 65 degrees. temperatures rose last night ahead of that storm as it made its way on through. lows tonight of 49 degrees. that's actually the current temperature. today will be yet another day above average, and wind at the airport last night with those storms just after midnight. 54-mil an hour winds recorded at the airport. right now winds at 40 miles an hour, dew point around 33, so

we're definitely drying out. that's going to allow temperatures to cool down overnight and we're already down in the 30s. 44 in sterling, 44 up towards frederick. clear skies right now. if you go outside right now and you look up, you may see a meteor. we have some meteor showers out there. you can also see jupiter, ur anus and a half moon as you look directly up into the night sky. degrees. it is going to be a cool morning. we'll start off with some sunshine, but we'll watch a storm system that right now is bringing rain to st. louis. that storm system will move closer to our area but it's really not going to affect us all that much. it's a weak storm and willet any weaker over the next 24 hours. here comes that storm off to the west, but once again, it will be falling apart. it will move through tomorrow with some cloud cover, maybe a sprinkle, but for the most part, i think most of us will stay on the dry side. what will make its way in here,

though, is some cooler air for tomorrow night and into the day on friday. i think friday morning will be a very chilly morning as high pressure will be dominating the reon. tomorrow morning, mostly clear skies. still a little on the breezy side but cooler. 34 to 46 degrees. winds may be 10 to 20 mes an hour. that's probably a little on the high side, though, as we move througthe day tomorrow. the winds will be much lighter than they were today. they'll be about 10 to 15. look for 54 to degrees and clouds will be moving in throughout the day as the storm moves on in. 54 degrees on friday. ahead of another storm system. saturd looks like it will be around 60 degrees. that next cold front will drop temperatures down by sunday. high sunday 55. i thinthe weekend looking pretty good, but saturday is the y to get out and about, and early next week temperatures will warm back up into the mid to maybe upper 60s by tuesday. >> notbad. thank you, doug. still ahead tonight, a joyride on a motorized grocery cart leads police to a stakeout
