thanksgiving and likely will face new tsa security procedures. there may be an alternative to the patdowns and full body scans. the alternative, to tsa at all. me opponents are urging airports t choose private security firms instead. news 4 is live at reagan national. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, barbara. a florida congressman is pushing this idea and it's not a new one. some airports already do this. and despite tht, private screeners are still having to follow federal guidelines. arlington resident craig downey is flying home to orida is weekend. it's also the first time he's gone through an airport with body scanners in place. >> this is my first day i'm traveling since they put these procedur in place, it will be interesting to see what it's going to be like. everything you read about, people getting angry, now everybody's talking about suing everybody and psecutors want to go after people. i mean, it's going to be interesting to see what it's

like. >> reporter: florida republican congressn is calling for airports to ditch tsa screeners in favor of private contractor instead. he recently wrote letters to the country's 10 0 busiest airports asking them to consider the move. he argues it could streamline the process, use half the personnel and make travelers more comfortable going through security lines. >> i mean, have you to have a pool of people that you hire to fill these spots now, so what are you going to get out of -- are theyoing to hire fm the same pool to hire private contractors? what's the advantage you're going to get? >> i definitely feel safer. want them to search me because have i nothing to hide. >> reporter: federal law does allow for airports to use private screeners. currently, san francisco is the largest to do o. and in orlando, florida, airport is considering the move. >> i think safety is first. and that's what i fee about that. you think about the safety. and you have to make some sacrifices. >> reporter: now, this morning

the head of the tsa said that body scans and body patdowns are unavoidable in these terrorist times. barbara, back to you. >> thank you. jurors could reach a verdict in the chandra levy trial today. day three of deliberations will get under way at11:15 this morning. over the last two days they deliberated for more than 11 hours. ingmar guandique is charged with killing the washington intern in 2001. prosecutors say hereath fits the pattern of other crimes committed by guandique. the defense says guandique has become a scapegoat for a botched investigation. let's take a look outside. it is chilly out there. i guess it's about 53 degrees, at least in thesun. tom is here to tell us what we can expectoday and look ahead to the weekend. just saw that high-definition view of washington. a gorgeous day. the potomac reflecting that cobalt blue sky. temperatures around the region ar chilly. it's only climbed about a degree or two. just in the last four or five

hours. it's now52 at national airport. it's near0 in prince george's county. arlington county is in the upper 40s, so is fairfax and montgomery counties. farther to the west it's in the mid and upper 40s. near the chesapeake bay, southern maryland, right around the low 50s. we've got a northweerly flow aloft that is bringing in chilly 2%uáz the upper midwest. that's going to be in place here throughout the day. over the last 12 hours, we had a few clouds around this morning. there are a few clouds over the shenandoah valley and mountains this morning, otherwise we've got lots of sunshine here and we'll have a sunny afternoon. and breezes are around 5 to 15 as temperatures climb just briefly, perhaps into the low to maybe mid-50s in the next couple of ñsours with that breeze, even with in sunshine, it is feeling rather chilly. now, it does appear we'll have some changes for the weekend. a look at that. and maybe bigger changes as we geinto next week an head toward the thanksgiving holiday. i'll have the forecast for that coming up in just a couple of

minutes. stay tuned. >> tom, thank you. a deadly accident on the baltimore-washington parkway overnight is proving how dangerous it can be to get out of your car on a major highway. investigators are trying to figure out exactly what led up to the person getting hit after their car broke down. news 4 megan mcgrath has more on the investigatioup to this point. >> reporter: a terrible accident early this morning that closed the southbound lanes of the b.w. parkway is fusing attenti on the dangers of getting out of your car ang the side of the road on a major highway. now, this accident happened very early this morning, right around 1:00 in the morning. police say that a car was traveling south on the b-w parkway when for whatever reason it became disabled and came to a stop. they say that dh driver of that vehicle got out to investigate, possibly even push the vehicle. at that point, another vehicle that was traveling southbound struck the driver. he was pronounced dead on the scene. now, police are urging people to think twice before getting out

of their vehicles on a major highway because it can be so very dangerous. >> when people's vehicles become disabled it's critical they get off the road if they can, as far off the roadway as possible. if you have do repairs such as changing a tire or anything else on the side of the road, make certain you're well off the road. if you have any concerns about your safety,dentify the police department and we can come back and help you asar as traffic control. we don't want to see this type of thing happen. >> reporter: the drivers of the vehicles involved in this accident all stayed on th scene,o this was not a hit and run situation. the roadway was closed down for several hours as police investigated. it opened around 5:30 this morning. in laurel, megan mcgrath, news 4. dan is in for jerry edwards and joins us with the late on traffic. good morning. >> good morning, barbara. actually, a very good ride out there for now around the beltway between tyson's corner and 270 bridge. no construction, no delays, no problems to report. in fact, all around the beltway through maryland, here's another

view over by river road, we'll take you out there. we've also got a camera that can show you at new hampshire avenue. anything is running free and clear around the beltway. let's take to you springfield south on 95. always worrisome spot for a friday but for now, without any roadwork and without anyxd accidents it's open and to dey down into stafford county. >> thank yo dan. three people are hurt after a fire ripped through a northwest washington building. it broke out around 130 last night in thexd 100 block of kennedy street northwest. two women and a man were rushed to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. there's no word on their condion at this time. a firefighter also twisted his ankle. the burning building includes a church on the first floor and apartments on the second. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused it. the head of metro prefers repairs to replacement when it comes to fixing the transit agency's escalators. interim gm says day to day maintenance makes more sense than actually replacing the

escalators which could ct $1 million each. metro is inspeing all 588 escalators in its system after last week's accident. six people were hurt when the escalator eaccelerated without warning. metro and ddochlt dot engineers will meet. part of the ceiling collapsed. a thick piece of plywood is covering the damaged area for now and could take weeks to fix. meo says jack hammering broke through the dome above the station causing pieces of con created to fall on the platform below. no one was hurt. eight minutes after 11:00 is our time right now. q joint press conference with the president of portugal. coming up, what the president is doing in europe and what he hopes to accomplish. also coming up, it's aúbrg day for the newly elected members of congress. we'll tell you about the lottery they've tered. and people across the country were up very early this morning to be among the first to

new today, president obama is in portugal. he arrived this morning for a summit with nato allies. afghanistan will be the key topic. president obama is certain to be quizzed about america's exit strategy. ews 4 aaron gilchrist is ve in the news room with details. >> this is going to be a quick trip for the president. just two days there.

he'll be discussing the critical foreign policy issues beginning with the war in afghanistan. president obama actually in portugal for two separate mmits. he'l meet with nato and european uni countries. first the focus will be be the war strategy in afghanistan. nato countries are expected to set a goal of giving afans control of their security by the end of 2014. beginning next year, actually. this trip, though, will actually hit on other big issues. conflicts with russia on building a msile defense shield in europe and economics, which the president addressed after meeting with portugal as prident and prime minister this morning. >> the focus of our meetingas on the highest priority for both our countries and that is, creating jobs and prosperity for our people. and one of th ways to do that is to increase trade and investment between the united states and portugal. trade which supports both jobs and innovation in both our countries. >> the president's trip doesn't end with those important international issues. this trip to europe is also

meant to address the perception of europeans that obama doesn't place that continent high on his list of foreign policies. this comes just days after his ten-day tour of asia which focused heavily on economic development. today the new kids in washington ghered for a class photo. in fact, they're together right now. the new members of the house, majority of them repuicans, as you know, have been all week long figuring out where everything is. now they're figuring out where their offices are going to be. that's what they're going to do right now. th'll have a lottery for that. the new repsentatives are drawing lots for office ñispace. there are more than 90 new members, soxd there will be pley of getting to know each other in the 112th congress. that's a live picture from capitol hill where they are doing that lottery as we speak pop one of the longest members of the house appears to be keeping his job.

ethics committee recommended charlie rangel be censured after finding him guilty of improper financial and fund-raising conduct. during the hearing rangel became emotnal saying he never meant to embarrass himself or congress zoom . >> i apologize for any embarrassment i've caused you individually or collectively as a member of the greatest institution in the country and the world. >> a censure is theecond most serious punishment the house can impose on a member, just below expuion. it is a public reprimand for improper behavior. well, inead of school uniforms, thousands of local catholic students are weari the color red at school today to support their church leader. arch bishop donald wurl is at the vatican in rome today. tomorrow he and 23 clergy members will be elevated toñi cardinal and serve as advisers to the pope.

in support of that high honor, local catholic students arexd wearing red which commemoratesx special days for saint and taping prayers and congratulatory message foss the soon-to-be cardinal. we are enjoying a beautiful day here if the nation's capitalut it ichilly. seems colder today than yesterday. >> there is quite a chill in the air, even with the bright late november sun. it is still mostly just in the 40s around the region. thisorning we started out with temperatures in many locations near freezing. there's a view from our sky watcher camera looking toward the west. it's bouncing around a little bit. we've got a northwesterly breeze gussing up to around 15 miles an hour. chilly 52 now at national airport. and it is quite dry. you definitely need the skin lotion on a day like today. and we're not going to see it warm up much more. maybe a couple of degrees for the high. and as we look at other temperatures in most locations, it's hoerring near 50 from the shenandoah valley across

virginia, the district, the eastern shore. it's uniformly right near 50 degrees. now, out in the mountains it's up around 40 degreesthere, very chilly there this morning. quite a bit of cloudiness there. most locations were above freezing, but east of there we had a clear sky at dawn. as a result, our temperatures plummetein many locations in the suburbs, nearby suburbs got near freezing this morning. and all this chilly air coming in from the west-northwest. upper level flow in the atmosphere tapping an arctic air mass sitting over southern canada. that will continue to affect us. that cold air mass will pass to our north on sunday and keep things cool and dry for the weekend. last tuesday when i visited ash burn, virginia's, creighton's corn elementary school in loudoun county. remember that day? we had that drilling rain. i d a terrific time at this school. i was welcomed by a huge sign at the a trtrium made by the art

students and art teach. and signed by all the students out here in loudoun county. this is a fairly new school, only a couple years old. when they first opened they had 200 student. now they have almost 900 student in this school. that is a huge area of loudoun county that is really developing rapidly. as you can see, those happy faces love talking about weather. we had a wonderful me. the teacher in the back there in red is jennifer, the one who invited me. i had a terrific time there at the creighton corner elementary school, loudoun county. right now in loudoun couy, they've got sunshine, a few clouds racingthrough. a dry pattern here. there are a few snow flurries up in the mountains of northern new england, the green mountains and white mountains, vermont and new hampshire and a weak system that's going to be passing to our north on saturday. may give us just a few clouds duringhe day. this high pressure just to our south now will drif off the coast and fade out and then we'll get a southerly flow that will warm things up first part of next week.

so, here's our look for tis frid. lots of sunshine throughout the rest of the afternoon. temperatures may be briefly touching the low and mid-50s but most of the dayt's going to be hovering around 50 degrees. then later on this evening we' have that bright full moon up. sunset at 4:52. moonrising around then. and by late in the evening, it's going to be down into the low 40s. quite a chilly evening and a cold start to saturday. tomorrow morning down into the mid-30s. afternoon highs tomorrow, though, should warm into the upper 50s with a few clouds around during the afternoon. and then saturday night looks like 'll have a mostly clear night down into the 30s on sunday morning. partly cloudy sunday afternoon. highs reaching the low 50s, maybe briefly mid-50s. monday, though, our winds shift to the south and southwest. we should warm up. maybe make it into the low 60s by monda afternoon. and on tuesday, perhaps up into the mid-60s, when that does appear we have a chance for rain moving in. tuesday could be a getaway day.

right now, investigators are trying to figure out what caused deadly pedestrian accident on the baltimore washington paray in laurel overfight. they say a man was checking out a disabled car when another vehicle hit him. jurors have started a third day of deliberations in the chandra levy tri. over the last two days they've deliberated for more than 11 hours. ingmar guandique is charged with killing the washington intern in 20 01. prosecutors say levy's death fits the ptern of other crimes committed by guandique. the defense says guandique has become a scapegoat for a botched investigation. we're following a developing story in new zealand. a gas explosion ripped through a remote coal mine, trapping 27 people underground. the blast happened at the pike river mine on the country's

south island. police say that shortly before the blast the electricity went out in the mine, which may have caused ventilation problems. >> we're looking inside, the more information that crews are working fntically. they're doing everything they can. it's a waking game. making sure the mine is safe to go down. >> sense the explosion, two men have managed to come out of the mine. they're being treated at a hospital for minor injuries. national weather service is confirming what many people suspected. it was, in fact, a tornado that touched down in baltimore on wednesday. the twisted touched do early wednesday morning. it was on the ground for less than a minute but left quite a trail of destruction behind. the storm damaged more than 350 apartmentsnd town houses. three people, including a child, were hurt. all of them are expected to be okay. >> we were talking about that yesterday ansuspecting it

could have possibly been a tornado there. >> well, just based on looking at the damage. but the radar, scanning the sky, it takes a ile for it to scan around. doesn't sit in one spot the entire time. between scans, actually a little tornado came out of this thunderstorm. then it dissipated within matter of -- less than a minute. so it was just a very short-lived and very weak tornado. but enough to -- of course, tornadoes can be incredibly powerful. this was cse enough to the ground to cause that roof to come off that apartment building north of baltimore. well, look at our camera uncing around on this friday. we do have a fewlouds up in the sky but overall, lots of sunshine. right now, chilly, 52 at national airport. only near 50 in montgomery county. arlington, prince george's county in the upper 40s to near 50. en going to warm up much more. we have a persistent flow out of the northwest that is continuing to bring in some chilly weather from around the upper great lakes region over us here for the rest of the day. overnight tonight for friday night fun, it looks like it will

boulevard to go east on dale boulevard but it's not affecting everything heading south on 95. nice view we can also show you t there on the beltway right at the wilson bridge. inner loop, outer loop, everhing running freely on the beltway. up on 270 we don't have any problems heading out toward frederick county. back to you. >> thank you, dan. we have a major traffic alert tell you about. you may want to avoid the outer loop of the beltway in alexandria this weekend because of work related to the wilson bridge project. the far right lane will be closed between the eisenhower avenue exit and just east of telegraph road starting tonight. that will cut off access to north king highway, huntington avenue and telegraph road exit. and there's a new push to curb distracted driving, espeally othe beltway. according to a aaa survey, half the drivers say they make a work-related call or text even in constructiozones. aaa wants 100 companies to sign

that rained engine parts on an indonesian island below. when the plane's left engine explod exploded, debris punctured two fuel tanks, cut control lines, damaged braking and landing flaps, and shut down a power generator. even the front landing gear had to be manually lowered. in all, 54 cockpit alarms and multiple warnings. flying the plane back to singapore took all the strength of the pilots and training pilots who happened to be on ard that day. >> we felt this loud thud. the pilot did a fantastic job. >> this was a major multiple emergency situation. took five guys working together like astronauts on apollo 13 to get this plane safely down. >> reporter: now qantas airline maker says rolls-royce was shipping modification without telling airbus the older engines had a defect. even as thousands of passengers continued to fly on a-380s

despite the risk. >> it may have been they undercalculated or miscalculated the true risk that is causing a fire which would cause the turbine section to seize and have a catastrophic failure. >> reporter: rolls royce andñz rbus declined to comment but lufthansa says it's received modified rolls royce engines for its fleet. a catastrophic explosion is caused uncontain engine failure. extremely rare. 2500 flights in the rld a year and we see about 25 incidents. very, very rarely out of the 25 do we see an uncontained failure like we saw with the a-380. >> reporter: while european authorities warned that unusual wear on the engines could cause them to shut down midflight, a massive plosion wasn't predicted. >> that was tom costello reporting. > five international airlines fly the a-380. three use those rolls-royce

engines. dutch authorities are reviewing the dental recds of u.s. missing teen natalee holloway as they analyze a jaw bone and tooth found last week. natalee's father says he provided the dental records but hasn't heard any new information. there's been no announcement from dutch officials whether the jaw bone is even a human bone, but a forensic scientist in aruba says the inton from a human female. a tourist in aruba found the jaw bone on a beach. in ohio, police have confirmed that the three bodies found in a wooded area are those of three missing people. you'll remember a mother, her son and daughter and a family friend we reported missing about a week ago. the daughter, 13-year-old sara maynard, was found bound and gagged in a home on sunday. she's been releasedrom the hospital. police have a suspect in custody. police say that suspect led them to the bodies in the woods. >> as shafb of this county for the past 18 years, have i never experienced a case this big, this serious, and this tragic.

and in my entire law enforcement career, i have never experienced something like this. >> the suspect, matthew hoffman, remains behind bars. sheriff barber says thease is now a homicide investigation and will be turned over to th county prosecutor's office. police are searching for a murder suspect after he allegedly killed a man st steps from the u.s. capital capitol. sources say marvin polencia accused a coworker of allegedly hang an affair with his wife. he believes he may have killed vazquez. vasquez started his shifted last friday at a high-end office building on constitutn avenue northwest but never finished it. on tuesday road crews along i-70 found a large box with his body inside. police have issued an arrest warrant for polencia, looking for his mini van, a 2007 honda odyssey with maryland plates plamcia. they warn he is believed to be

armed and dangerous. a former boxer in d.c. known for hishampionship fights is accused of stealing money intended to help children. prosecutors say he gambled away a half million dollars omoney meant for a gym he founded for at-risk kids. news 4 darcy spencer explains, the allegations have stunned students and volunteers. >> we'll work on it. >> reporter: a former world lightweight campion and d.c. hall of famer but now keeley thompson is accused of stealing hundreds of thousandsf dollars from a gym he started in 2004 to keep kids away from gangs an violence. >> i just hate to see that he in this type of trouble. hope he can get out of it. because these kids love him. >> reporr: according to court records, as extive director of keeley's district boxing and youth center, thompson, known by many as champ, gambled away more th $500,000 in district government grants.

it really is a lot more successful for men, not as -- not so showy as it used to be exactly, exactly. >> and, again, the last two on the nonsurgical procedures. >> chemical peels and laser resurfing, whether it's fraxel, frxainated co2. >> what's driving the increase? in the economy we've been suffering from, less money coming home, why is it growing? why are those numbers growing? >> well, i think it's more acptable, number one. i think the surgical techniques, anesthesia techniques are safer. all of these are done as outpatient. belief it or not, it's probably more econocal to have cosmetic surgery these days than it was ten years ago. prices have dropped, as the economy has tightened. with the outpatie procedures. so, i think it is more affordable. people to want stay in the work force. they don't want to retire.

finally, this huge number of injectables, the botoxes, the fillers, that's a huge new wave that's really pushed the numbers up. >> do you think people are less embarrassed about admitting they've had cosmetic procedures or do people still try to keep it -- >> no, no, i think there are botox parties now. i think people are blogging and tweeting and, yeah, talking about it. >> speaking of procedures, of course we all watched as heidi montag underwent ten procedures. we have a picture. ten procedures all at the me time, is that safe and is it a normal thing to do? >> well, heidi herself brought up the procedure's 10% -- no, just kidding. no, i think that sould not be done at one time. i think this is outpatient surgery. first and foremost, it must be safe. doing ten procedures at one time is absolutely n recommended. >> i have to say other than her breast augmentation, i couldn't
