want for breaking into more than 100 home in virginia is now in custody in montgomery county. >> good afteoon. it is a very busy day in the news and we start with that breaking story after months of searching. police now say they've got their man. brad edmonds is facing several charges this evening, including first degree burglary in montgomery county. he was arrested wednesday after an undercover surveillance operation during which detectives witnessed edmonds sbreek two vehicle and trying to break into a house. later police say more stolen items were found in his home. police say they're confident he will soon be charged for a sires of break-ins in fairfax as well. darcy spencer is working this story for us and we'll have a live report from her coming up right here news4 at 5:00. so you want to stay with us for that. there is also breaking news

thisfternoon in virginia. a serious crash is causing big problems on the dulles toll road. >> ashley linder joins us now. >> reporter: this is a nasty on of we've got eastbound dulles toll road after the main toll plaza completely shut down. eastbound lanes will be diverted into the airport access lane which will get you by the crash. unfortunately, it takes drivers all way inside the beltway. you lose direct access to the beltway this afternoon. you're going to have to go over the top of the beltway and head over toward route 7 to continue on your commute. adding insult to injury, we've got yet another accident i the back-up in that detour they've got in the airport. access lanes approaching route 7. that one you'll get by single file. this does have far-reachin consequences. some good news, if you were trying to get on to the toll road where the accident was not. if you get on it at spring hill or better, you will be bond the know. you still have some lane closures from spring hill headed toward the accident. but you can at least get by without hitting those substantial delays

now, the delays, those ve far-reaching effects. not only are we jammed on the toll road but on the capitol beltway, this is what we've got. the outer loop, this is pretty typical but a bighang-up to access to toll road. you will certainly be hitting the bre. there once beyond it, the delays continue because it is friday afternoon so every which way is a big wash this afternoon. but dulles toll road eastbound remains shut down. ck to you. >> thanks, ashley. millions of americans are preparing to fly out of town for thanksgiving and all them will likely face some new tsa security procedures. but there may be an alternative to those pat-downs and full body scans. some opponents of the new screenings are urging airports to choose private security firms over tsa screeners. elaine reyes looks to passenger at reagan national today. >> reporter: arlington resident craigdowny is flying home to florida this weekend. it is also the first time he's gone through an airport with

body scanners in place. >> this is my first day. i haven't traveled since they put these procedures in place so i'm curious to see what it will be like. he go you read about, people getting angry,eople talking about suing everybody. prosecutors want to go after people. >> reporter: florida republican congressman john micah is calling for airports to ditch tsa screeners in favor of private contractors instead. he recently wrote letters to the country's 100 busiest airports to consider the move. he argues it could streamline e process, use half the personnel, and make traveller more comfortable going through security lines. >> you have to have it full of people that you hire out of. what are you going to get out of? are they going to ha the same pool to hire contractors? what's the advantage? >> i definitely feel safer. i want them to search me. i have nothing to hide. >> federal law does allow for airports to use private

hours since wednesday. less than an hour ago, jurors sent a note to the judge asking for the legal definition of assault. the judge gave them an explanation and deliberations resumed. assault is linked to the felony murder charge. pat collins is at the courthouse now and will have a live report at 5:00 or soon whe the verdict comes in. drivers are being urged today to think twice about getting out of their cars on a busy highway. after a deadly accident in the laurel, maryland area, a man was struck and killed on the bw parkway overnight. the victim's car broke down. police say he w pushing it down the road when another car struck him. the drivers involved did stay on e scene. police say anyone who has mechanical troubles on a busy road should try to get to a safe location. you can always call police for help with traffic control.

> a late night fire left three people injured after flames roared through a northwest washington building. the fire started around 10: last night in the 100 block of kennedy street northwest. two women and a man were rushed to the hospital suffering from oke inhalation. a firefighter also twisted his ankle. the burning building house as church on the first floor and apartments on the second. investigators are still trying to figure out what started the fire. president obama's meeting with nato leaders right now in portugal, topping th discussions is the war in afghanistan. the u.s. military is gearing up for a winter offensive. and military leaders pointing to success in one town as the model on how to win the war. lester holt reports from afghanistan. >> reporter: the president and nato leaders meet in lisbon. here on the ound, marine, airmen and soldiers i talked to

the newfreshman class will be officially sworn in as members of the 112st congress in jaary. back to class at west potomac high school in fairfax county. it is reversing its recent change to grade examining cheating policies. today, the principal said the school would reinstate fs on report cards. last week the school announced plans to give students incompletesinstead. he said west potomac will never tolerate cheating or plagiarism and anyone caught will get a zero on the assignment. the principal said the rever of policies comes after intense public scrutiny. which he called a distraction. well, if the weekend looks anything like today, we should be app okay. >> we should. here's hoping. how cool a morning will we have? >> that morning will be comparable to how we started the day today. it was definitely cold in some of the outlying areas. we even had a little wind early this morning. now the winds have died down.

we're talking love again this week with he willen mccarthy of the "washington post." always great to see you. this seem to be onef the most unusual or interesting weddings we've ever seen here. >> it was one of the most interesting weddings i've ever attended, yes. this was a wedding that happen on halloween them dn't just go with halloween themselves went with day of the dead. so they really sort of did it up. this is the sty about kadsy and john. theye a couple who live in bowie and they met in junior high school. she was following her trend crush the movies and encountered him. i can tell you, her parents didn't like him for the longest time. eventually, you know, he just kept going out and kept goin out. they might be sticking around though. then they realize what had a good guy he is and he is soood to her.

so on the 16th anniversary together, they both turned 27 them decided to finally tie the knot. they did not like the idea of a traditional wedding. so they cook up this idea. she said it was something they could both stomach. they were married by the grim reaper. isn't that amazg? and they were sort of skeleton themed things everywhere. it was really fun them did a fun job. >> and they found each other. >> let check out the couple featured in this week's date lab segment. >> this is our brave man of the week. hisame is kobe. he is mr. adventure, right? traveled the world. he has stories from every corner the universe. and he told us he was looking for somebody who could match him in that sense. somebody who had a sense of adventure. somebody who could get outdoors with him. someone really active and he likes quirky girls so we kind of except in mind. we set him one a woman named

thanksgiving is less than a week ago. monday is the day for the food drive. today the nurses of georgetown community hospital are in the final hours of their annual campaign to help collect food for families. at orgetown university hospital, the cans are piling up. the nurses' annual drive to collect 7200 cans in 72 hours. >> we are very excited. various units in the hospital have really embraced this. we have corn, peas, potatoes, macaroni and cheese. >> reporter: all the food collected will help provide food for needy families but it is also a way for the nurses to express their own thanksgiving. >> anybody fortunate enough to have identified right now can share what they have with others. my family is very, very fortunate. something that i feel like i have to do. >> the whole box.

>> the emergency was far worse than first reported. and has made the pilots and crew heroes in the eyes of passenger and you haveaviation experts. >> good afternoon. we now know the series of cascading failures in this cockpit. they were so serious that it is really a tribute to the crew that this plane managed to stay airborne for as long as we did. and we also now know that qantas has serious questions about what engine maker rolls royce knew and when they knew it. the home video of the hole in the left wichk wantas flight 32 is terrifying enough. we now know how lucky the crew and 450 passengers were to have survived the mid air explosion that rained engine parts on an indonesian island before. when the left engine exploded, debris apparently punctured two fuel tanks, cut control lin,

damaged braking and landing flaps, and shut down a power nerator. even the front landing gear had to be manually lowered. in all, 54 cockpit alarms and multiple warnings. flying the plane back to singapore took all the strength of the pilots and training pilots who happened to be on board that day. >> so we felt the pilot did a fantastic job. >> this was a major multiple emergency situation. it took these five guys rking together like astronauts on apollo 13 to get this plane safely down. >> reporter: now qantas airlines says the engine maker rolls royce had been shipping new modified engines for the a-380 without telling qantas or the plane's maker airbus that the older enginehad a defect. even as thousands of passenger continue to fly on a-380s despite the risk. >> it may have been they undercalculated or miscalculad the true rick. that is causing a fire which would cause the turbine section to seize and have a catarophic

failure. >> reporter: both decline to comment but lufthansa said it has received modified engines for its a-380 fleet. a catastrophic explosion like this is called an uncontained engine fail ufrl extremely rare in modern aviation. >> there are aroximately 25 million flights in the world aier. and we see about 25 incidents and very, very rarely out of 25 do we see an uncontained failure like we've seen that w that a-380. >> reporter: while european aviation authorities warned this year that unusual wear on e engines could cause tm to shut down amid flight, a massive explosion wasn't predicted. >> this is a brand new airplane, keep in mine. why did this happen? qantas, of course, wants answers. it has now ground all of the a-380 planes that used the engines. rolls royce supplies engines to three of the five international carriers that fly these a-380s. no american airline, no u.s. carrier has the a-380.

rkey if you wa it well in advance of your meal. if you have an old bird that has been in your freezer for years, it won't taste as fresh. you want to use that frozen turkey within one year for best taste. though they say they areafe to eat years later. go ahead. it might not taste as good. makesure you start thawing it in time for thanksgiving dinner. it does take days, days, folks, to defrost a turkey safely in the frig. and if you do prefer that fresh bird, make sure that you buy it no more than two days before cooking. you don't want to buy a fresh bird and have it hang around in the frig for too long. >> now will he talk about the uffing. yum! the question is, do you stuff the bird or do you cook the stuffing in a separate caste role dish? >> another safety answer here. this come from the usda. the safest way, it says, is to prepare it is outside the bird.

in a dish in the oven. the problem is that when you stuff the bird, the bird sometimes is done before the stuffing reaches a safe temperature whether you cook your stuffing in the dish or in the turningy, you have to use a meat thermometer to check the temperature of your stuffing. safely cooked stuffing must reach 165 degrees. and by the way, for safety's sake, the turkey has to read 165 on a thermometer placed at the inner most part of the thigh. outsidthey say is a safer way to do it. >> last question about safety. consumerwant to knowf pink turkey meat is safe eat. >> forget the color. the usda helped with us this answer. it says the color of cooked poultry is not a sign of its safety. the only way to know if it is safe is to use a thermometer. this way you make sure that it has reached that safe internal minimum temperature of 165 degrees fahrenheit. and the meat, for example, of
