the skeletal remains of the 24-yr-old intern, found in rock creek park back in may 2002. she had been missing for a year. in the ourtro susan levy, chandra's mother. for more than nine years she has conducted a one-woman crusade to find her daughter's killer. she was here for the trial. she was here for the verdict. >>his verdict go today. >> i don't know. there is always going to be a feing of sadness. i like the word that you used a sense of peace. i've never heard too many people say that. i planned to be here and follow up on what happened to my daughter no matter how hard it has been for me personally. i'm not sure if it is a sense of peace but i canertainly tell you, it ain't closure.

>> reporter: may 1st 2001. chandra levy went missing from her apartment near dupont circle. the story goes national when it is reveal that the 24-year-old intern was romaically involved with married california congressman gary condit. condit denied having anything to do with chandra's disappearance. in time the focus of the investigation shifted to this man, ingmar guandique. an illegal immigrant doing time for assaulting two women in rock creek park. now, in this ca there was very little concrete evidence. no official cause of death. no murder weapon. no dna. no fingerprints, no eyewitnesses. but there was circumstantial evidence. testimony from the women he assaulted in the park. testimony from his land lady

about scratches he had on his fa the dayhandra disappeared. testimony from his pen pal who said he talked about a dead woman. enter this man. armando the mouse morales. guandique's cell mate. morales said guandique confessed to the murder. i killed her, morales said guandique told him. i kill her but i didn't rape her. armando the mouse morales, a powerful pivot point witss in this case. now, guandique is 29 years old. he is scheduled to be sentenced february 11th. he faces a minimum sentence of 30 years in jail. the maximum, life without parole. back to you. >> pat clins, thank you. >> jurors said their decision was lenny but not necessarily

difficult. in the end they decided as a group, convicting guandique on both counts of murder. now the jurors' perspective on what went on during this trial. derrick? >> reporter: it was a jury made up of mostly women but they came from a cross second quarter of society. while their verdict has an obvious effect on theaccused, their lives were changed as well. it was one of the most high profile cases in the city in years. a young woman who was rdered, an unimaginable loss to her family. the weight of whichas not lost on jurors. >> we took it very seriously. we felt that we owed it to everyone involved to go throu the evidence completely and to find in the end, a verdict that we could all be comfortable with. >> through their three and a half days of deliberation, few requests. the last was for the legal

definition of assault. a necessary factor for their guilty verdict on. what charges remain and while some of the initial charges against the accused had been dropped, an overwhelming aunt of evidence remained. >> we went through it. in a very deliberate manner and we also wen through the law very deliberately. >> reporter: while the victim's mother's presence in the courtroom added an air of emotion, thereas an effort to separate that from the edicts of jurisprudence. >> you can't go deeper. you have to make adecision off that based on the law based on the rules that are written, based on the judge's directions. for me, it was definitely a learning process. >> and the testament to the emotion that prevail in the jurors' box. as they were poll, somef them seemed to be wiping away tears. >> derrick ward, thank you. our team coverage continues in the levy case.

chris gordon is an attorney as wells a reporter here at news4 who has coverage many famous trials. let's talk about that cell mate. any indication from jurors how much of an impact he may have had during the deliberations? >> reporter: they were asked that question specifically. and they didn't answer directly them basically said that as a group, they have decided not to discuss the specifics of deliberations. and here's the legal analysis, and for our viewers. logically, you have to understand that this jury believed armando morales and his story, that a confession was made in jail. and that guandique told him he had killed chandra levy. otherwise there is no evidence putting guandique at the scene of chandra levy's murder. >> we didn't hear from him.

he did not take the stand. mute we hear from him during the sentencing phase in this? >> reporter: you may well. when it comes to sentencing, a defendant is usually the last one ven the right to speak. he is asked, do you have anything you would like to say. quite often if there is any chce, the defense attorney will tellhem express remorse. if there is any chance for leniency. in this case he faces 30 years to life. there may be that opportunity, and he may take it. he may also decide not to speak. he may want to maintain that he innocent. he will have the right to appeal. after he is sentenced. he can appeal theonviction and the sentencing, but the only by a would be overturned, if there is a mistake of law made by the judge in this case. >> all ght. chris, thank you. and our coverage continues on news4 at 6:00. you can go to our website.

nbcwashington.m to hear chandra levy's mother's statement. plus reaction from several jurors in the case. we are following some breaking news out of northwest d.c. on 16th street. a person was fou dead after a house fire. craig melvin is there to tell us about this. >> reporter: right now, 16th streetorthwest from arkansas to newton shut down and officials say it will be shut down for some time. six block of 16th street northwest shut down. as you mentioned one person got in a house fire this afternoon at the corner of 16 and oak street. at ts point the fire officials are still working the identify that victim. we're told around 3:15 this afternoon, a passerby in the 3600 block of 16th street saw fire, saw smoke call 911. it was a two-alarm fire. the firefighters were here on the scene. while th were trying to put out the blaze they came across the dead body. again, at this point, no age, no

gend. however, fire officials say they do not think anyon else was inside the rowhouse when that fire started. the fire and smoke with you so intense, did it do some damage tohe neighboring r houses but we're will they should be okay. too early to identify the cause of the fire. we believe it started on th third floor or perhaps the roof. in this case, the trf onaffic on 16th street, a nightmare. >> thank you. and police are investigating an armored car heist at the gas station off sherman avenue. three men with weapons approach the armor car guard as money was being made. the robbers made off with some of the money. police have used dogs and a helicopter to help in the search but they are still on the lose. right now, the travel rush on. folk start heading out for the holidays. >> doug kammerer has your thanksgiving forecast for you on

the jury finding ingmar guandique guilty on two counts of felony murder in the death of chandra levy. the sentencing is in february. one story found dead in a house fire this afternoon. here on 16 street and northwest d.c. the crews arrived to find flames coming from l three floors. traffic is blocked in both directions on a main artery there between newton street and arkansas avenue. >> the redskin getting a much needed win against tennessee. they beat the titans 19-16.

60 degrees toward leonardtown. nearly 70 degrees during the day. the patuxent river, temperatures 71 earlier. charlottesville near 70. tomorrow a lot more areas will be in the upper 60s to near 70 degree so a pretty good looking tuesday out there. we are going to see more clouds develop. a lot of clouds to the west. a couple of storm systems will try to move through region look at the temps. 60 in philadelphia. 59 in washington, d.c. and down toward knoxville, 70. that will move in ding the day tomorrow. if we had sun omorrow, i think we would be in the 70s easily but we'll see a lot of cloud cover. the system will make its way into o area. what will we be seeing? we will have the front move in. that front tonight into tomorrow will give us the chance of a shower late in the day tomorrow. this evening, mostly clear, nice and mild. 55 to 58 degrees. patchy fog tomorrow morning. a mild start but a little on the breezy side. those winds will be out of the uthwest at 10 to 20 miles an hour.

guilty of murder in the death of chandra levy nearly a dede ago. sentencing is set for february 11th. guandique faces 30 years to life in prison. he is already behind barsfor attack two women in rock creek park. the same park where levy's remains were found in 2002. >> of course this is one of the busiest travel week of the year and new security measures at the airports have upset a lot of people. >> today the department of homeland security de it clear, there will be no big change to the scanners and pat-down procedures. julie carey is live with more at reagan airport. >> reporter: no big change for now. administration officials do want travelers to know, they are listening to their concer about these more invasive procedes. still, they're also quick to say the top priority for the president this holiday season keeping air travelers safe. as holiday travelers arrive at reagan national some bring with them their first experiences

with the body scanners or pat-downs. this breast cancer survivor who was pull aside in miami cautioned the screener to take it easy. >> i'm a breast cancer survivor. i told her i had implants and they were very curious. >> reporter: across the krirg other travelers are up in arms saying they feeliolated by a security pat-down that can involve over the clothes touching of genital areas. they've received 600 complaints in three weeks and is contemplating a lawsuit. janet napolitano acknowledged the furor but she remindpeople last ho holiday season is when the underwear bomber tried to take down a passenger jet. she said they are listeningut holding firm on airport serity. >> of course, we will make jumps or changes when called upon but not change or adjustment that's will affect the basic operational capability that we need to have to make sure that air travel remains safe. >> reporter: meantime the white house okesman said the

the loose. this is a composite sketch of a man responsible for raping a woman early saturday morning as she was walk here along georgia avenue. >> she was attack by an unknown male from behind, drag into the woods and raped. r the 52-year-old woman from silver spring was walk south, approaching the intersection when the attacker raped her. then ran away. there have been two similar sexual assaults in aspen hil since june. >> in each case the women have been out in the late evening or early morning hours by themselves. the suspect descriptiois similar. >> reporter: police stay first attack happened june 13th at 12:30 in the morning. the victim was walking on t road near aspen hill road when she was sexually assaulted by two men. the other attack happened on october 26th. the victim was sexually saulted while walking on connecticut avenue around 11:00 at night. police released this surveillance photo of a possible suspect. >> in both caes, the women were

by themselves. the june victim was 26 years old. the october victim 30 years old. both walking and both dragged to wooded areas and then sexually assaulted. >> reporter: police are urging women to not walk alone in the area and when they are out, to stay aware of their surrounding and carry a cell phone at all times. >> it is horrendous. the fact that the women were walking down the street, somewhere not anywhere near dangerous. >> i hope she is okay. i he whatever happens, they catch up to him sooner or later. >> reporter: anyone with information on any of these sexual assaults is asked to call montgomery county polic back to you. >> thank you. caught in the cross hairs of gang violence. a 15-year-old was stabbed to death walking diploma osbourn high school on friday in manassas. chopper 4 was over the scene as students held a vigil for the victim this afternoon. and investigators belie his murder is now linked to another

stabbing that happened saturday. tracee wilkins has more on how the school and police plan to stop the violence. >> reporter: police 78 stabbings surround two rival gang that have had an ongoingimpact. in a city that average twos murders a year, manassas police are investigating the first murder of this yearl. >> we've been pretty lucky until friday when we had our first homicide of the year. >> reporter: the 15-year-old freshman miguel hernandez, wa stabbed and kill on his way home. today students return to school for the first time since his murder. parents reacting to the news. >> very freakish. i would have never thought this would happen at thisschool. very unsettling. >> reporter: the police say they are dealing with gang violence. police say hernandez was walking with a group of friends when several enagers pulled him

aside, jumped him and held him as he was stabbed. he died hours later in the hospital. two suspect have been arrested and charged. one is a 17 quleel has notbeen identified. the other is an 18-year-old osborn high school student. >> it took time to locate him. when he was located, he w arrested. >> reporter: this morning police are watching over the shopping center in manassas after a 19-year-old was attack by a group of men and stabbed there on saturday. the victim survived. police say they believe his attackers were gangembers connected to friday's 15ear-old victim who they have not identified as a gang member. >> we know that he had family members that were gang-related but we're not exactly sure what his participation is in the gangs. if any at all. >> reporter: police say most of this violence has be centered around the georgetown south neighborhood. they've uncreaseincreased their patrols
