and family members for years, one that made international headlines and ruined careers. and now one man guilty of killing chandra levy. >> good evening. i'm jim vance. >> and i'm doreen gentzler. this day isong coming for the family of chandra levy. the 21-year-old disappeared in 2001. her body was found a year later by a man walking in rock creek, but it wouldn't be seven years until charges were filed, and now nine years after she disappeared, a guilty verdict. pat collins and jackie bensen have bn reporting on this case from the beginning. jackie tells us live from district court. jackie? >> reporter: the verdict is a major victory for police and prosecutors. nine a a half years after chandra levy disappeared a murder conviction. >> i'm glad to be here and to have followed up on what

happened to my daughter no maer how hard it has been for me personally. i'm not sure it's a sense of peace, but i can fairly tl you it ain't closure. >> 24-year-old chandra levy, a federal intern, was last seen alive on may 21st, 2001. her disappearance became international news when she was linked ro mantically with former california congressman gary condit he was 53 at the time. he was qstioned extensively by police. he was the subject of intense media scrutiny, but he was never publly named as a suspect. after levy's skeletal remains were found in rock creek park in 2002, investigators began to focus on ingmar guandique, a man in jail for attacking females in the park. the case stalledor years until it was assigned to the department's cold case squad. detectives had no eyewitnesses, no dna, no murder weapon and

little physicalevidence. >> it's not like it is on tv and cases can be very complicated, and ove time, detectives working hard can discover things that were not discoverable in the beginning. >> defense attorneys argued that the testimony of jailhouse informants was questionable. it took the jury three and a half days to reach a verdict: guilty. >> we owe it to everyone iough the it to everyone evidence completely. >> while today's verdict will never give them back their daughter, we are hopeful that it gives them some level of comfort and aids them in mong forward. >> reporter: an attorney for former cgressman gary condit says that today's verdict, quote, vindicates his client. doreen, back to you. >> jackie bensen reporting from d.c. superior court. thank you, jackie.

ted collins has en covering this case from the very beginning. he was nsds that couroom when that verdict was read. you were looking at ingmar guandique as was mrs. levy. reaction? how did he act? >> well, throughout the whole trial, he's been pretty much emotionle emotionless. but today, as the verdict was read, he closed his eyes, and he sat at that table as the guty verdict, guilty verdict came across. then after the jurors left the courtroom, he took off his headsets. he's been given simultaneous translation throughout the whole trial. he took those headsets off, tossed them on the table, turned from his defense atorney and was led out to his cell. >> pat, this has been a long ordeal for chandra levy's family. i know you've been talking to them way back since this first happened. how are ty doing? >> there is no greater advocate for chandrañi levy than her mother, susan. right after she went missing, susan levy came to washington to mount a one-woman crew side to

find herdaughter, to find her daughter's killer. she sat through this trial and listened to graphic testimony about how her daughter was killed. she waited outsi for that verdict. she was, indeed, a mother on a mission. >> there are more than a few people, i think, that might have been surprised at this verdict, because there was no physical evidence at all, but the jury seemed confident. >> they were confident in the evidence that they saw. but there were a lot of missteps in this case, a lot of evidence that was overlooked, washed away the weather, deteeriorated by time. this was a circumstantial case that the jury heard, but it had enough evidence to get a conviction. you know, sometimes justice isn't always pretty, but in the end, justice seems to always win. >> thanks, pat. good work. >> thank you, pat. fighter jets scramble to intercept a plane that crossed into restricted air space around washington this afternoon. the north american aerospace defense command dispatched two

f-16s as a precaution. they escorted a mission into manassas where it ended witut incident. the student pilot entered restricted air space accidentally. the head of the transportation security administration is asking flyers not to boycott those full body anners at airports. a national internet-led protest of the procedure is planned for wednesday. some are upset that the scanners can see through clothing. tsa chief tom pistol said boy cots of the machines could cause long lines for those thanksgiving travelers. he just filmed a public service announcement to be played in airports letting travelers know what to expect at security. >> you have the oion to request that the patdown be conducted in a private room, and you have the option to have that patdown witnessed by a person of your choice. thank you, and remember that at tsa, your safety is our priority. >> white house officials said they have made tweaks to the new

security procedures, including telling screeners to be mre sensitive. flames shot through a rowhouse in the district this afternoon. one person inside was dead, they found. tonight we're learning that the nearest fire hydrant didn't work. craig malman is on 16th street with more on this. craig? >> reporter: someone saw those flames this afternoon. th immediately called 911. when firefighters got here, they tried to connect their hose to see this fire hydrant. but they coul't because the hydrant broke apa. >> iwas terrible, it was out of control. >> william wright was taking some family members home monday afternoon. >> i smelled smoke and i looked straight up at the top of the roof and the was flames shooting straight up the top of the buding. >> reporter: the fire shut down six blocks of 16th street northwest for about 3.5ours during the afternoon rush. it took about 16 firefighters nearly an hour and a half to get it under control. >> in the course of the

extinguishment, they did find a victim in the fourth floor bedroom area. >> firefighters say an adult male died. he was one of six home at the time. everyone elswas able to get out safely. as fire investigators shifted through chared debris t figure out exactly how it started, they say the fire could have spread to neighboring rowhouses and been far worse because of this. they say this hydrant at the corn of 16th and oak was theethe closest to the burning rowhouse. broken hydrants are all over d.c. but they are required to be labeled so firefighters don't waste valuable time. this hydrant was broken and unlabeled. >> fortunately, that didn't hve much impact on our firefighting capability. >> firefighters had enough water on tir trucks and there was another hydrant close by. but there is currently a $3$30,0

a judge ruled today that a lawsuit against virginia tech's president and former executive vice president can go forward. the suit was found by the families of virginia tech shooting victim julia pride and aaron peterson. lawyers for the school leaders argue that they were protected by sovereign immunity, but the judge said their positions did not protect them from personal liability. 32 students and faculty were killed in the mass shooting 2007. the trial is scheduled for september. investigators are hoping that surveillance pictures will lead them to the men behind several burglaries in chevy chase. the pictures were taken from the mcdonald's in timmeneytown on

october 13. the men you see there used stolen credit cards to bite food. those credit cards were taken from a house on cardiff court shory before these pictures were taken. police believe those m might be responsible for several other home burglaries in chevy chase over the last month. d.c. mayor elect vincent gray announced half a billion dollar budget deficit today with a warning that major budget cuts are probably on the way. it was his first major speech since his election. he issued a somber speech about the district's finances. of the $5 million shortfall, over $2 million needs to be cut by next month. the gap brought on by lower spending and lower revenue needs to be entirely resolved by next spring. outgoing mayor is expected to propose the first round of cuts within the next two days. coming up, it's november. we all want to know just how much snow we wa're going to get this winte and we'll find out if the

just nine months removed from the biggest snowfall in d.c.history, the washington area is again preparing for winter weather. today transportation officials in maryland and virginia id out their plans to battle snow and ice this winter, but just how much are we likely to see? doug kammerer joins us with the official nbc for winter weather forecast. it can't possibly be as bad as it was last year. >> it really can't possibly be. we've never seen anything like that and we may never see anything like that again in r lifetime. but a winter like last winter may never happen again. one thing is for sure, though, this year. we will see less snowfall than we did last year, but just how much will we see? we pored over years of data to come up with our forecast, and here it is. snowmageddon, snowpocalye. those were the words describing

washington's amount of snow. dulles saw more than six feet. lastear saw storm after storm. december and february re extremely stormy with temperatures that were about below average. so how did you feel about last winter? >> i was not cra about it. >> horrible. horrible. absolutely horrible. >> i shoveled more than i ever want to shovel again in my life. >> t weather patterns that shaped that historic winter were brought to us courtesy of a strong el nino. el nino is a sudden change in the wind dection and water temperature in the ocn. warmer than average water temperatures is called el nino while lower temperatures are called la nino. >>uring el nino, thjet stream is fairly weak. it's the northern branch we look to that brings us the cold air and potential for snow but mos of those storms would have less

moisture. we also look to the north atlantic oscillation. in its negative phase, that jet stream dips way down, bringing us plent of cold air for snow and a lot of storms. that's what we saw last year. this year, though, i think we'll sethe nao in a more positive phase. that means lower temperatures, less aggressive storms and most of the snow staying to the north and west. so what are the predictions for this year? >> i would like you to tell me it will be more like the winters we normally have. >> that the's a lot less snow. >> no blizzds. >> you asked for it examine it looks like we're going to get it. this year we're predicting higher than average temperatures each month with each month having less snow than average. we saw that snowfall was below, if not well below, average. average snowfall for the d.c. area is about 14 to 20 inches. this year we're predicting 8 to

14, most of those which start as rain and change to snow. so effectively, we are predicting about four feet less of snow this year. that's what's just amazing about it. but one thing is for sure. we're going to b watching one pattern, that nao i talked about, we never in a pattern like this have seen a snowstorm of more than eight inches in our recorded history. if it were to happen, it would be unprecedented, but that would blow our forecast. we've never seen one. >> you know why? >> why? >> i bght a snowblower last year. >> you and about 10,000 others. >> when, after the snow? >> oh, no, i used it. i got it on time. >> put it on craigslist. >> viva la nina. that's my opinion. >> this is also a la nina storm, which means it will pass.

over the next couple days as well with a couple kinks out ther too. outside today we saw a high temperature well above average. we were actually above average the last 13 out of the last 14 days. just amazing how warm we've been with a high today of 61 degrees. our low is 39, our average is 38. we're at 60 degrees. believe it or not, we've come up a degree the last hour, and i don't expect it to go down much. nds are at 8 miles an hour, and those winds will increase over the night as well. quantico coming in at 58 degrees sorks there will be some cool areas but still above average just about everywhere. elkin 70 degrees, 72 in the eastern portions of kentucky. that warm air will start to work its way in tomorrow, and tomorrow i think we can expect temperatures about 10 degrees above average with a temperature in our area of about 67 degrees. some big time thunderstorms

going on with tornado watches in the midwest. that is going to wash out. we'll not see much rain with it. what we will see is a mild day tomorrow a little on the windy side, but most of the moisture will be out of there as far as a storm is concerned. then a chilly day coming up for wednesday as high pressure moves in, then we go back to near or above average tempetures on thursday before another big swing in our tempetures late this week, and i think later this week on friday and saturday, even into sunday, we're talking about our first real taste of winter with a potential of our first freeze in the d.c. area. we may just see it coming up this weekend. so tomorrowmorning, patchy fog possible, a mild sta with a light breeze. temperatures in the mid-40s to around the 50-degree mark. tomorrow afternoon warming up nicely, 64 to 67. increasing cloud coer, and if we do see any sun at all, it would be early. a chance of afternoon showers will be there as well you may want to take the umbrella off to work.

peop in los angeles are investigate ag deadly fl by a toddler inside the staples center. it was at the end of the lakers game last night. the child was in a third row luxury seat. he fell over the low wall and landed on the concrete 30 feet below. the lapd said the toddler's parents may have mporarily lost sight of their child.
