fire fight in pakistan. >> officials say cia interrogators in secret overseas prisons kick-started the effort find bin laden. he was shot and killed in a bat bad, pakistan in a $1 million mansion. steve has the latest from the national mall. >> good evening from the national mall in washington where there have been a scattering of celebrations by tourist, local residents and of course, they're celebrating down at the white house where we have now learned that president obama first heard in august of 2010 that the founder of al qaeda, osama bin laden might be using that mansion not far from the pakistan capital of islamabad, the evidence mounted up, we are told. the president gave the green light to go last night. it's page one worldwide, america kills osama bin laden. this paper at the pentagon where 184 died on 9/11. >> just a good day to be a united states marine and american citizen.

to defeat al qaeda. >> reporter: people came to the white house and to ground zero in new york, a victory celebration at ohio state university, even harsh obama critics offered praise. >> president obama and his national security team acted on the intelligence when it came in and they deserve a lot of credit. >> reporter: but as the nation celebrates. >> justice is served. >> reporter: this was shanksville, pennsylvania, law enforcement tonight is on extra alert. >> it is a key moment that al qaeda has to avenge. >> reporter: and osama bin laden's organization is not dead. so how did the world's most wanted man hide in plain sight? not in a cave, not in the mountains, but in the mansion? senior lawmakers up here, aides down at the white house say the pakistani military has got a lot of explaining to do.

celebrations to break out. within the hour of the president's announcement, hundreds of people crowded outside the white house and spilled into lafayette square, soon the hundreds became thousands. the crowd was waving flags and chanting usa and singing the star-spangled banner. street vendors were in the crowd within 12 hours and they were selling obama got osama t-shirts. it began friday when president obama gave the green light and then it was a coordinated 48 hours to kill osama bin laden. nbc's jim miklaszewski explains how the al qaeda leader was brought to justice. >> reporter: friday morning just minutes before departing the white house on his way to inspect tornado damage in alabama, president obama gave the order to launch the operation to kill osama bin laden. more than two days later, u.s. special operations forces attacked bin laden's heavily

fortified compound at abatabad, in a scene straight out of an action thriller, commandos closed in for the kill. on approach, one helicopter had mechanical problems, but no one was hurt. special forces teams flooded the compound and immediately came under heavy fire. it was obvious bin laden would not be taken alive. u.s. officials say armed with an automatic rifle the al qaeda leader fired on the americans who then shot and killed bin lat laden. >> then the first bang came, three other consecutive bangs came and then there was one fifth, final bang which made the whole sky orange. that's when i thought this is something really big. >> in the exchange navy s.e.a.l.s killed two al qaeda couriers and one of bin laden's adult sons. one woman who the al qaeda

gunman used as a human shield was also shot and killed. when the shooting stopped the americans loaded bin laden's body on a helicopter to be transferred to afghanistan. nearly ten years after 9/11, the operation to kill bin laden was over in 40 minutes. >> as we just reported new york city is also beefing up its police presence around town. >> meanwhile, large crowds have been gathering at ground zero since last night to mark the dramatic turn of events. michelle frandz z enjoins us li from new york with the reaction there. michelle? >> reporter: jim and pat, certainly crowds around ground zero are nothing new, but there's a twist here today. many people coming together, not just tourists, not just new yorkers and not just commuters mingling here. for some, there's a new purpose to return here or to come here today. some to celebrate. others, remembering and trying to reclaim some of what was lost.

of us and could get an isolated shower. there's a look at the loop and the clouds moving in over the last few making their way into areas of northern prince georges county and down through staff ford county. the shower activity is to the north and west around cumberland and areas of kaiser and somerset in pennsylvania, but could have a brief shower coming through the area during the overnight period. we're in the 70s right now. there's 80s to the south around fred ricksburg and much like betting with georgetown, coalsville in kensington, your current reading 76 degrees that the hour. by 7:00 we're at 71 degrees and i think we'll have a mostly cloudy sky by 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. and we'll drop 2066 by 11:00. just an isolated shower and we have a better chance to see showers and even some thunderstorms tomorrow as we warm things up and as things turn a little sticky around here, so it's going to be hot, it's going to be humid and maybe stormy, for the afternoon we'll

so you suggest limiting the number of male plants and trees. which ones are the males. >> the garden should not be just another old boy's club and the way you can tell the difference between one and the other is the females are the ones that bear fruit or bear the nuts. the males are the ones that have the tall stalks with them usually filled with pollen. you can particularly see it with pine trees. let your neighbor plant the males and you keep the females. >> when it comes to flowers, which are the best ones to plant. >> for this answer both my mother and jackie kennedy would be very happy because roses are really the best. you want them to be bright, showy, large, fragrant. that's what usually makes for the less pollen, meaning that the ones that are small and particularly the ones that are very light colored, those can have a lot of pollen. >> the whitish and greenish colored -- >> are the ones you don't want to plant. >> of course, stay out of the guard own hot, windy days. >> yes.

skies. pretty light wind for early tomorrow morning so fog possible. i don't think we'll talk about dense fog, but there will be patches of fog tomorrow with a temperature of 62 degrees there's a look at where the showers are, most of them making our way north and northeast ward, looking at the rain through ohio and especially areas of northwest arkansas. that's out ahead of the upcoming weather system which is going to be moving through our area early wednesday. until then, it will be warm air out ahead of this system and moist air out ahead of this system. as far as our showers go, we could see scattered showers tomorrow well after noon time during the late afternoon and evening hours. there's 7:00 p.m. just off to our west, better chance of showers and storms will come our way and early wednesday morning up until noon time and there's the front at noon getting east of i-59 and we'll clear out a bit, partly sunny by wednesday afternoon. for your evening, temperatures drop from the mid-07s to the

7100 which is the fairfax county parkway. it's causing major traffic troubles this afternoon. one person has reportedly died in the crash. >> it happened about 3:45 westbound i-66 will be closed until 5:30 this evening. westbound traffic is being diverted now on to route 50. these are live pictures now from chopper 4. you can see this vehicle on its side, paper strewn everywhere. again, one person has been killed. this is all unfolding. the 7100 which is fairfax county parkway area of i-66 westbound closed until 5:30 tonight. major world leaders reacted swiftly today with relief to the news that osama bin laden had been killed by u.s. forces. >> and in some parts of the muslim world there are suggestions that people on the street are also relieved. richard engel is following that part of the story for us in libya. >> reporter: reaction to osama bin laden's death has been pouring in from world leaders.

>> bin laden -- >> reporter: germany and france welcoming the news, but cautioning that this will not mark the end of international terrorism. yemen said that it hopes there will be more targeted attacks on al qaeda leaders, even the vatican weighed in saying that while christians don't welcome the death of any individual, osama bin laden used religion to create divisions and hatred among people. >> what this shows is no matter how challenging and difficult and how long it takes, people who commit these acts of terrorism, who kill deliberately, large numbers of civilians, totally innocent people and we are going to carry on until the job is done. >> reporter: but here in the middle east osama bin laden's passing has a particular significance. for the last decade sooosama bi laden has been a source of shame to the region. he's brought shame to the muslim people and brought shame to the muslim religion. many people hope that now that he's gone there could be a new

osama bin laden's death has inspired a surge of patriotism. more and more people are buying american flags, pins and postcards. dozens of specialty t-shirts celebrating his death have started appearing for sale online and on streetcorners less than 12 hours after the news broke. in florida, authorities got a taste of just how tough alligators can be. >> and one gator in particular got a taste of a cop car,

literally. take a look. sheriff's office released this video today showing the alligator chomping away on the front of a deputy's cruiser. the deputy went there after a neighbor reported seeing the animal roaming around the house. he had to back up to get the gator off the car. animal control officials eventually wrangled the gator. no one was hurt though the deputy's front bumper will leave some repairs. >> i would leave it like that, that's a statement. there's a story behind. one hungry gator. a record-setting day last week in the number of tornadoes touching down.
