s.e.a.l.s went through before carrying it outd. it's clear just how difficult a process it was to gather, analyze and act on the intelligence that led the troops to his place in pakistan. there were cheers and headlines, but there were more somber moments today. steve is on capitol hill. steve? >> reporter: across the country, atd least for now in the war against al-qaeda, there is nothing but unity and celebration. >> in boston tonight and in washington, crowds cheered the u.s. military. at a dinner, the commander in chief got a standing ovation from lawmakers of both parties. he passed the praise on. >> i want to again recognize the heroes who carried out this incredibly dangerous mission. >> with osama bin laden dead and buried at sea, aides say the commander in chief called some on the navy s.e.a.l.s commando team and heard their stories .

as the choppers went toward bin laden, he agonized and listened in realtime at the white house. u.s. intelligence had found bin laden last summer, trailing a trusted courier to his hideout. but they were never sure. >> the president had to evaluate the strength of the information and make what i believe was the most gutsy call of any president in memory. >> his call was to release the s.e.a.l.s and bomb the place without confirming bin laden dead. but the cry came out, geronimo, code for bin laden dead. where he hid was near pakistan's capitol, just down the road from the academy. >> they got a lot of explaining

6 in 1980 and it wasn't surprising they would be the ones to take down the elusive osama bin laden. they trained for conditions that mirrored the actual target as closely as possible. nbc news has learned the team practiced since april in a full-size model of bin laden's compound set up at a u.s. military base. >> you virtually don't need hand and voice signals. they dance like bears, they know each other's moves, they eat, sleep and drink together. it is a team effort. and it's a team job, and that's what i say -- that's why the s.e.a.l.s got the edge. >> officials say the mission was years in the making aided by intelligence from cia interrogations from high-ranking al-qaeda prisoners. >> we picked up on items that had been collected during the clinton administration. we worked those aggressively for eight years. we passed that on to the obama

lake. for those in the washington area who lost friends and relatives in 9/11, the killing of osama brought a flood of emotion. some opened champagne, others had prayers. craig is covering there tonight. craig? >> i talked to a man a short time ago, and he said with the exception of 9/11, today's crowd was the largest he's seen. locals, tourists, young and adults stopped by. but it wasn't just tears. today everyone seemed to be reflecting in their own way. inside mets park monday night, a military tribute. outside service members, active and retired, celebrate. >> this is a great occasion for the nation. >> retired army reservist military colonel bernie was one that got free tickets. but watching the game was secondary. >> i knew it would just be a

matter of time. clearly you can run, but you can't hide. >> it's a good feeling to know that positive things are going on with this war effort. >> many of the soldiers and sailors, airmen and marines at the park have spent time overseas as a part of the war on terror. >> it's really in god's hands that we're here at this time. >> her eighth grade class planned a trip to see the pentagon memorial. >> it's just heartbreaking that all these people died because of that, that they didn't get to finish their life. >> reporter: as the eighth graders who barely have a memory pause and reflect, so does leslie gore anson. she lives about a mile away but has never seen it. >> i always meant to, but because of what happened yesterday, we decided to come by. >> the memorial moved her. but something else, too. >> it doesn't seem right to celebrate a murder, even though it was the right thing we did, and i'm proud of our military,

it just doesn't feel right to be jubilant. >> while everyone paid tribute in their own way, for this family, sunday's news and monday's reaction brought back the most painful of memories. >> i'm glad we got him. justice was served. but we still lost a son. >> they're talking about his son romeo who died here at the pentagon on 9/11. he was a navy tech specialist from waldorf, maryland. he died three days before his 24th birthday. from the pentagon memorial, craig mel man, news4. doreen, back to you. >> craig, thank you. a senior obama administration official tells nbc news there is no indication of any imminent terrorist threat in the wake of the killing of bin laden. nevertheless, local officials are on a heightened state of alert. d.c. police and metro transit police visibly increased their patrols in the city today.

martin o'malley held a conference call with a dozen state agencies urging extra vigilance. tonight the question everyone wants an answer to is how much did pakistan know about osama bin laden's location? u.s. intelligence officials conclude the million-dollar mansion could only have been built for bin laden. they point to red flags, including the compound's massive size, the lack of phone lines and the fact that trash was being burned there. abbottabad is also a military town, so the question, why didn't pakistan spies and military notice? >> it could be they were aware of it and decided to keep their eyes open but closed as far as americans are concerned. >> new jersey senator frank loutenberg says he wants to stall plans to give pakistan a billion dollars in aid until they know more about their involvement in pakistan.

[ laughs ] [ all ] what's in your wallet? d.c. fire firtsz called in police after finding what appeared to be a weapon inside a house that caught fire tonight. it happened about 7:30 off wisconsin avenue and northwest. that's off-campus housing for students at american university. while trying to put the fire out, firefighters came across what looked like a gun.

officers later determined it was a bb gun. two bad accidents shut down interstates for hours in new jersey today. the first happened just after 11:00 near eisenhower avenue and alexandria. a tanker overturned carrying used cooking oil. lanes were closed for four hours. the second accident happened on interstate 66 in fairfax county just before 4:00 this afternoon. a bmw lost control, hit a guardrail and then hit a ford explorer causing it to flip over. the driver was killed and westbound lanes of 66 were closed for most of the evening rush hour. a man with debris after a house exploded is in the hospital. a neighbor rescued the man after hearing calls for help. the house was blown to bits. we're told it was undergoing renovations and that no one was living there. firefighters reported a heavy

with gas prices around $4 a gallon now in the washington area, there are long lines of people waiting to fuel up. >> running on empty or close to it is not going to save you money. you can do serious damage to your car and it will cost you more than a fill-up. >> it always happens when the gas prices go up. our call rates have gone up. >> think you can go that extra mile? think again. aaa says calls from motorists who have run out of gas are up nearly 40% in the washington metro area. and when you run out of gas, besides the hassle and danger of being stuck on the side of the road, you are damaging your car. >> there's multiple things that could happen. number one is it puts stress on the fuel pump. >> this is a fuel pump. it's located inside your gas tank. >> this is what tells that fuel gauge where your gas is in that tank.

>> so this is submerged in my gas tank. >> absolutely. >> and it's the gasoline that lubricates the fuel pump. so if you run on a quarter tank or less -- >> if it's not getting lubricated, it's a motor. it could die. >> or if you're taking a corner quickly. >> if you're taking turns very sharply, you could slosh the gas away from the fuel pump and stall. >> or if you park on a hill, the gas moves away from the pump and your car may not start. and one of the biggest threats to your fuel pump and fuel filter, letting sediment in the bottom of your tank clog things up. >> we took this gas tank out. just by chance we found a gas tank with some sediment in it. >> the black particles you see floating in this tank? sediment. as you run closer to empty -- >> this is where the major dollars of damage comes in. >> replacing a fuel pump could cost as much as $2,000. >> anything where you've got to go into the fuel tank is not going to be cheap because it's handling a hazardous fluid. >> aaa says you should not let

your gas gauge fall below a quarter tank. if you can't afford to fill up, add what you can afford when you hit a quarter tank and make it a habit. running on empty, you risk expensive repairs to your car and the danger of being stranded on the open road. risks aaa says drivers should not take. >> most of the time it's just because they don't want to spend the money for gas. >> remember, if you do run on empty, you also run that safety risk. when you run out of gas, you could lose power steering, you could lose power brakes as well, and being on the side of the road is not a safe thing to do. >> not around here, anyway. >> thanks, liz. >> doug is here with more on our weather. >> i was doing that exact same thing the last couple days, trying to find the cheap gas. i'll never do that again, liz. thank you. >> now you learned. me, too. >> i just paid $3.94, though, in silver spring. a beautiful night. it is just gorgeous out there

but a little on the humid side. if you're thinking about taking a run or maybe you did a little earlier, it may have been on the humid side for you. live doppler radar, nothing to show out there right now. there is no rain across the area and i don't expect much over the next couple hours. tomorrow is going to be a little bit of a different story. 70 degrees currently. winds are calm, dew points at 60 degrees, humidity up to 70%, so there is the potential for fog overnight. 71 in sterling, 73 in fredericksburg. these are actually where the average temperatures are for this time of year, or at least just about that. 62 by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. watch out for fog as you make your way out and about. near 76 degrees by noon. i expect things to stay dry to that point but then we'll see our chances for showers and storms go up. high in pittsburgh, 72 degrees. 81 in elkins, 83 in richmond. i think everybody will get into the 80s tomorrow.

not just the low 80s, maybe the mid to upper 80s during the day tomorrow. most of the rain, however, should stay back to our west for a good portion of the day. you can see it well back into ohio right now. nothing across our region. we'll break it down for you. by tomorrow morning, 8:00 in the morning, nothing to worry about. i think you'll be fine. just once again watch out for that fog. around about 4:00, a chance of showers popping up. maybe a couple thunderstorms, but not a whole lot. we're going to wait for that front to push through around midnight, 12:00 tomorrow night. that's the time we have a chance for severe storms and we'll stay on the radar to right around 7:00 wednesday morning, so wednesday's rush hour could be a little bit wet. tomorrow 66 to 72 degrees. nice and warm, increasing rain chances mostly after sunset tomorrow. 77 to 83 degrees, some locations to the south even warmer, down in fredericksburg. then on wednesday, 62 degrees,

gorgoloni was superb, though, all night long. he goes eight shutout innings, allows just three hits, no walks. the nationals beat the giants 2-0. the capitols know they have to saddle up. they have been in tough situations this season, but they know to keep the post-season alive, they have to win one of the next two games. they can change momentum of this series if they can lock it up tomorrow. the capitols were more aggressive yesterday but they still struggled mightily on the power play. they were 0-6 on power play opportunities. last year that was the same struggle on special teams that caused the capitols the series against montreal. they know a win tomorrow makes it a brand new series, and they're doing all they can to improve. >> believe me, we're not just sitting there as a group of

charlie sheen, is his name, says he's planning a benefit concert for the victims of the tornadoes in alabama last week. more than 200 people were killed by those storms. thousands more lost everything. sheen toured the devastated neighbor in tuscaloosa yesterday. he decided to visit the area after a request from a student at the university of alabama. nasa said today its final shuttle mission won't happen until after may 10. its launch was canceled last friday. it needs more time to work on the shuttle. gabrielle giffords
