at 4:00." >> right now, new details are emerge about the raid on osama bin laden's compound. the navy s.e.a.l.s handcuffed people with plastic zip ties before killing bin laden. and the white house today says the photograph of bin laden is gruesome and releasing it could be inflammatory. good afternoon, everybody. welcome to news 4 at 4:00. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. this afternoon, president obama met with his cabinet where loud applause could be heard outside by the media. also today, the obama administration says it's weighing the pros and cons of releasing a picture of a dead osama bin laden. >> we're also learning new details this afternoon on how the al qaeda leader was killed. news 4's steve handelsman starts our coverage at the white house. >> reporter: president obama made the call to send in the s.e.a.l.s. now he's got to decide what if anything, to send out to proof bin laden is dead. should he release photos of the

terrorist's corpse or videos of bin laden's burial at sea? team obama is cautious, concerned about inflaming the muslim world. >> the additional release of information or any type of photographic evidence is something that we have to take into account in terms of what the reaction might be to it. >> reporter: in 2006, when musab al zarqawi, al qaeda's leader in iraq was killed by u.s. forces, the bush administration released a photo the next day. with osama bin laden execute or killed in self-defense? yesterday, some u.s. officials said bin laden fought back as the s.e.a.l.s attacked. today they said he was unarmed but shot during a firefight and it was justified. >> he resisted. the u.s. personnel on the ground handled themselves with the utmost professionalism. >> reporter: another tough obama decision. what to do about pakistan and what looks like a double cross.

>> why osama bin laden could be so close to islamabad really in plain sight. >> reporter: the pakistani government denied shielding bin laden and warned the u.s. to back off. looking ahead, u.s. officials fear retaliation. the cia director spoke to brian williams. >> al qaeda still remains a threat. they are still going to try to attack our country. >> reporter: and that means president obama has to work with pakistan. despite the fact that osama bin laden lived there in luxury, the top obama counterterrorism official said here today, pakistan remains a strong partner. i'm steve handelsman, news 4 at the white house. president obama is making plans to visit ground zero later this week. the white house says the president's trip will both mark the death of bin laden and remember the victims of the september 11th attacks. as we continue to learn more about sunday's raid, we're getting a closer look at bin

laden's compound. >> pakistani officials have now sealed it off to prevent anyone from getting inside. as nbc's tasib hamad reports, there are several peculiar details about this property. >> reporter: osama bin laden's house is about half a mile to a mile in that direction along a dirt track. and the area itself is still being developed. there are a number of plots that are empty and some half built houses. what stand out about this house is not just its size but also these high walls. 14 to 16-foot high. and at the very top of these walls is a barbed fence. locals say that when their children played football or played balls in the area and kicked the balls over the fence, the balls were returned as they are normally in this neighborhood but someone would come out and would give the children some money. >> translator: i used to go to their house. he had two pipes one spoke arabic. they had three children, a girl

and two boys. they gave me two rabbits. >> reporter: along this side of the roof san ad for a girls school. slightly strange thing to be seen on osama bin laden's house. >> the war on terror is not over. cia director leon panetta has plenty to say about the death of osama bin laden. here's more of his interview with nbc's brian williams. >> brian, i don't think there's any question that, you know, when you get the number one terrorist in the world that we're a little safer today than we were when he was alive. but i also don't think we ought to kid ourselves that killing osama bin laden kills al qaeda. al qaeda still remains a threat. they are still going to try to attack our country, and i think we have to continue to be vigilant and continue the effort to ultimately defeat these guys. we damaged them, but we still

>> thanks for your input. you can visit nbc washington's facebook page if you'd like to let us know what you think. >> deending on where you live you pould be in for big changes tonight. storms en route for some. >> veronica johnson is here to tell us what's coming. >> yeah, really is. for the evening and for the early part of the night where we could see some thunderstorms move through the area. the entire area, though, right now is dry. it is quiet. but take a look to our north and west. up around pennsylvania, just over the maryland line, around cumberland and somerset, there some are storms that have started firing up. so because there's the potential that those storms could deliver some hail and damaging winds, maybe even the possibility of some very frequent lightning coming through with those severe thunderstorm watches is until 10:00 p.m. from washington count tooerks allegheny county and down south into frederick county and clark county, virginia, until 10:00 p.m. in and around that area we could see some storms.

you probably notice today those big clouds starting to build and a little bit of humidity. temperatures are in the upper 70 toss around 80 degrees right now. and that is certainly some fuel for this storm. but it's way back to the west, the main front, that's what's going to be coming through our area tomorrow morning. a nasty morning rush for us. 69 degrees is where we'll drop by 9:00 p.m. there is the possibility that those storms could last until 9:00, maybe 10:00. and then it's rain that takes over. again, and in sm pretty moderate to perhaps heavy rain for the morning rush. looking pretty nasty. jim? >> thank you, veronica. investigators in loudoun county are investigating what led to an apparent murder-suicide on south birch street here in sterling. investigators have identified the victims as larry and mercedes kay perry. both were in their 60s. detectives tell us a man called 911 and told dispatchers there was a shooting victim in his home. when deputies arrived, they found larry perry dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot

wound. his wife kay was also shot to death. detectives say kay perry's mother was also in the house at the time of the shooting. she was not hurt. turning to the rush hour. there are problems this afternoon on the beltway in maryland. >> let's get the latest from ashley linder. >> we had an accident on the inner loop around river road. they clearedt pretty quickly. not quickly enough because it did have time to stack up delays. as you can see here, it's wide open. unfortunately, i don't give you much to look at there but that's where the accident was. these are the delays we've got. not too bad coming out of virginia. you've got a little bit of company. those are the headlights headed towards us. bigger delays prior to this though. we had an accident at little river. that was cleared on the inner loop. heavy from braddock to little river and through tysons we're stacked up. top side of the beltway is going to be heavy already as we pass old georgetown inner loop. no stranger to the delays there. heavy for connecticut avenue

into college park. the pace starts to look a little better. as you can see by university, rolling at a nicer clip but still in delays toward 95 and college park. >> ashley, thanks. one of the nation's top education honors has gone to someone from our area. today, president obama presented michelle scheerer with the 2011 teacher of the year award. scheerer teaches chemistry at urbana high school in frederick, maryland. the president praised her for opening of the world of science to students who are normally underrepresented in the field. minorities, women and students with disabilities. scheerer said the education system needs to be extended beyond the classroom. parent support and community involvement are essential to ensure the success of our students. resources and technology are essential to improve the quality of our schools. >> the award is given by the d.c.-based council of chief state school officers. you will soon need to keep a

little extra change handy when you go shopping in montgomery county. the county council pasd five-sect bag tax. it kicks in at the start of next year. the move mirrors a similar measure in the district, but this impose an extra fee on all retail establishments, not just the ones that sell food. the tax will apply to both paper and plastic bags in hopes of reducing litter. the bag tax is expected to generate about $1 million a year. part of the money will fund free reusable bags for the poor and elderly. >> good news for petco customers. you'll likely pay less for power this year. new rates going into effect in june will mean savings for both d.c. and maryland residents. the average maryland customer can expect to save about 15% or $22. and in the district about 10% or $10. pepco says it is thanks to contracts negotiated when energy costs were much lower than they are now. when news 4 at 4:00

you're watching news 4 at 4:00. >> courtroom chaos in oklahoma city. witnesses say a man just convicted of murder jumped the defense table and punched the d.a. in the nose. the chaos continued as people in the courtroom tried to get out of there. the d.a. suffered a few scratches but was otherwise okay. the convicted man will spend at least 38 years in prison for the murder conviction. aerosmith front man and "american idol" judge steven tyler is out with a new memoir. and he's talking about his use of drugs in the past. >> in the book, does the noise

gatherings in which crowds celebrate at the white house, ground zero and even on the campus of ohio state university. since then, many have raised the question, are these celebrations appropriate? we're joined by mike with the washington city paper. he's one of the 20, our list of the 20 people worth following on twitter in our community right now. and, mike, let me start with what your followers are saying. there's a lot of talk early yesterday and, of course, sunday night. what were they saying. what are they saying now? >> you know, when the initial video was breaking of the celebration outside the white house, people seemed to think it looked very exciting. and i saw some people on twitter saying, you know, they'd love to be there, if you were in d.c., try to get down there. and i think sort of after the initial impulse and after the initial news broke, people started to wonder, like you said, whether it was appropriate to celebrate someone's death, even someone like osama bin laden. >> there was an article written on salon.com.

[ male announcer ] wells fargo. with you when you're ready to move. late monday night the u.s. army corps of engineers exploded a large part of a mississippi river levee in missouri. here's the footage. tonal took two seconds so we're repeating the video several times here. engineers plasted the hole to divert floodwaters. the controversial move came in an effort to save the town of cairo, illinois, from flooding. recent rain brought river levels to record heights. >> and along the ohio river, two levels are pretty high. so that area keeps getting rain on top of rain. >> and we're going to get a little rain ourselves? >> yes. increasing chances of rain as we go through the -- really not so much even the late afternoon but i really think the evening hours as part -- as well as part of the overnight and some of us could get some thunderstorms, too. let's take a look and see what's

going on. overcast skies right now. the clouds have moved in and it's still getting plenty warm out there with temperatures in the upper 70s to right around 80 degrees. live digital doppler, pretty much dry throughout the entire area. you have to go to areas around cumberland and kaiser. then right into pennsylvania. it's moving east at about 25 to 30 miles per hour. so part of this line as it develops could come into our area and because of that, a severe thunderstorm watch is up until 10:00 p.m. we've got a potential then to get gusty winds out of this as well as some hail. i think that the rain will be coming down pretty good from any of those thunderstorms and that means reducing visibility. there's a look at the line coming through pennsylvania, ohio, all the way down to tennessee. eastern tennessee and alabama. the front right behind it. that's what we'll be moving through our area early part of the day tomorrow. i think our heaviest rain, really, widespread rains will come during part of the morning rush. 79 degrees here.

stormed the cockpit of the hijacked plane. today his father is reacting to osama bin laden's death. >> we were relieved and pleased. and a really great part of the story is that these brave americans who accomplished the mission all survived without any loss of american military life. >> it's believed that flight 93 was bound for washington, d.c., and that the terrorists planned to strike either the capitol or white house. because of the heroics of the passengers, the plane crashed in a field in shanksville, pennsylvania. todd beamer was married with two young sons at the time of his death. his wife was pregnant with their only daughter. coming up right here on news 4 at 5:00 tonight, local families with victims who died at the pentagon talk about what bin laden's death means to them. there is no time for suntan

is definitely saturday. >> thanks, veronica. there are more problems out there today for sony customers. >> the company announced another 25 million users of its pc games had data stolen by hackers. this is the second time this has happened in just the last few weeks. chris clackum has the latest. >> reporter: with last week's news that sony's playstation network was hacked, compromising the personal information on 77 million users and sunday's bow of apology and a promise of help from sony executives, some gamers were still willing to give sony the benefit of the doubt. >> if we have technology, everyone is bound to figure out a way to screw it up for everyone. >> reporter: but sony is admitting they were hacked, exposing another 25 million customers to identity theft. criticism has become brutal. >> they screwed up bad. they didn't invest in security over the last decade.

>> reporter: tuesday, sony confirmed the second attack and said it occurred around the same time as the one on the playstation network. in both cases, information stolen by the hackers may include a user's personal info as well as logins and passwords. >> sony gets an "f" for taking care of people's information right now. there is help that sony customers may end up more annoyed than harmed by the hackers. >> this is not armageddon for data loss. we're not talking about social security numbers. in most cases we're not talking about credit card numbers that were left in the clear. >> reporter: however, sony can't say for certain some credit card info wasn't part of the theft. so affected customers need to stay vigilant. >> it's really important to not overreact if you are a consumer. it's sensible to look at your credit report today and in six months. make sure nothing unexpected has occurred. >> now sony's online playstation entertainment and music networks remain offline. chris clackum, nbc news.
