picture of osama bin laden dead. the white house says the president does not want to encite violence by showing the picture. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. i'm jim handly. it's our top story. there is a decision today on the death photos of osama bin laden. those pictures won't -- won't be made public. president obama has decided that no proof is needed. >> and he said presenting the photos as a trophy would be in his word, not who we are. steve handelsman reports the president's decision is being met with unity even from his opponents. >> reporter: president obama made the decision. his press secretary quoted the president exactly. >> there is no doubt that we killed osama bin laden. it is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an encitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool. that's not who we are. >> reporter: big-name

republicans backed the decision. >> i don't see any point in the macabre picture. >> i think there's ample proof that this was osama bin laden. >> reporter: attorney general holder testified it was legal for s.e.a.l. team 6 to kill bin laden even though he was unarmed. >> if he had surrendered i think -- attempted to surrender, i think we should obviously accepted that, but there was no indication he wanted to do that and therefore his killing was appropriate. >> reporter: u.s. officials say they're already getting usable information from the computers and hard drives and five cell phones seized at bin laden's mansion and flown back to the u.s. cia is putting out an urgent call for more arabic translators working 24/7 to get al qaeda secrets. hoping to find the names of bin laden's big donors and the details of any attacks or after-death reprisals okayed by bin laden. homeland security officials

for his uncle. coming up at 5:00, nbc's jim miklaszewski will give us more on this and what the pakistanis knew. >> someone renting a home tried to switch the dryer from gas to electric is what caused that house in rockville to explode overnight. tracy wilkins talked to neighbors who heard the blast. >> the first order of business after daylight was to move debris from out of the treetops near the home so that investigators could work without the threat of large chunks of roof falling from overhead. out in investigation is under way. >> at 2:55, boom, just a huge boom. >> the neighbor says that when she and her husband heard the crash overnight they thought that maybe it was a thunderstorm. they got out to check. >> my husband came running out and the house across the street's on fire, and i came out and i said the house across the street is gone. >> hundred of personnel and utility workers scrambled to the

11200 block of ashley drive just after 3:00 a.m. >> we received several 911 calls for either a fire or explosion in the house. >> everything was in flames. i -- i'm still just kind of in shock. >> there was debris in the trees and the neighbor across the street, was there roof in their yard. there was roof on the roof. there's insulation all of the way down to this intersection right here. >> the wife was found behind on the other side of the fence behind the neighbor's house and her husband was, like, blown out to the side and was -- that's where they found him in the side yard. >> neighbors say the man and woman who were blown out of the home had just moved in this past weekend. the house been vacant for years. >> they literally just moved in. i didn't even realize there were people in the house yet. they had been unoccupied for a while and it was a good thing and lise knew there were people

in there. >> the man and woman are in their 30s while the man is responsive. the woman's condition has been downgraded to life-threatening and for now, there are plenty of people who don't have power or gas and it will remain that way until they know for sure what caused the explosion. i'm tracy wilkins, news 4. >> at least nine elementary students were hurt in a bus accident this morning and it happened at 9:00 on stringtown road in route 355. and the mirror of another bus traveling in the other direction and it went off the road and hit a tree. no students were seriously hurt. >> senate majority harry reid's recovering today from a spill he took in rainy downtown d.c. reid leaned up against a wet surface and fell and dislocated his shoulder and after a trip to the hospital, reid was on the hill with his arm on a sling.

>> if he thought it was chilly this morning look out, bundle up. >> meteorologist veronica johnson is here with the forecast. >> folks, it's been chilly today, on the cool side, it's been and yesterday we were in the 80s. today we've got highs just around 60 degrees, but the morning, this morning we started out in the low and mid-40s and of course, it is wet. now the rain is gone and we're left with cloud cover across the area and here's a look at the satellite loop. you can see the clouds go all of the way back to the west. in fact, there's still a little bit of a disturbance that will continue making its way in the area and it's triggering a few light showers. those you can see on the radar and they're coming down to loudoun county right now and may last into fairfax county. spots are on i-66 as well as the western side of the beltway and wet and a brief shower and a spritz or sprinkle there. it's 58 degrees right now in the district.

it's 59 in greenbelt, 60 degrees in alexandria and around quantico. >> it will be another chilly one tonight. in fact, there are frost advisories for western maryland and freeze warnings for the extreme eastern portion of west virginia. our forecast tonight, we clear out i think late evening and we'll drop to 49 degrees by 11:00 p.m. and a breezy, clearing evening for us and mild, bright sunshine coming our way tomorrow and we'll talk about the prospects for rain, jim and pat, before the week is over. >> thanks, veronica. thousands of people in western tennessee are dealing with massive flooding after weeks of heavy rain and it could get worse. several communities are being warned to evacuate before the mississippi river crests. hundreds are already staying in shelters after several feet of water rushed into suburban neighborhoods. leaders in six states are considering blowing up more levees to help divert rising rivers the force behind

devastating -- battery-operated cameras, tell the story and you can see the parking garage cover and debris flying through the air here while the police chief and others were waiting inside the storm's fury played out and it stopped -- everyone in the building survived. the year-long battle to reach a contract agreement with nurses may finally be over. officials for washington hospital center representing 1700 nurses announced a deal today. the nurses have been working without a contract for about a year. you may recall the one-day strike back in march after negotiations broke down. it ended with them being locked out from work for an additional four days. nurses will hold an official vote friday and saturday on whether to ratify the contract. turning to traffic now it's been a messy day. let's see how the rain has impacted the rush hour.

>> let's begin with the beltway and ashley linder. how are we looking? >> good afternoon. the early-morning rains proved to be a good thing for afternoon driver was because we didn't have road construction crews. all lanes were open. especially headed to 270 we're starting off with a cleaner slate than we typically would that the hour. you can see headlights coming toward us and that will be the inner loop leaving virginia, no problems. on the approach to river road, wide open. this is something we haven't seen for a little while. you see the far left of the screen and that's to continue up 270 and if you're continuing around the beltway, this is what you have past georgetown and you do hit the brakes on the approach to silver spring and here's the pace west of connecticut and right at it, you are on the brakes and fortunately, no accidents to report and see that one disabled over on the left shoulder and that's about it. pat, back to you. >> thanks a lot, ash. honey bees are taking over a school in northwest washington. today students and staff at walker jones elementary installed a beehive to promote

is killing me" at the lincoln. what's that all about? >> i'm playing a character called pinky bell. she's a kept woman and i would have to say she's walked the streets a couple of times. i'm plague alongside angie stone, kenny ladermore, teeny barino, fantasia's brother. oi oh, my god, i can't think of all of the people. christopher williams and lots of actors and actresses in the play. it's a great play. we're here until sunday. we have two matinees on saturday and sunday at 3:00 and we play in the evenings at 8:00. >> how did you land that role? >> before i was a reality star i was acting. i love acting and i love all those things. >> and you love washington? >> a little chilly here in washington. i came from, likes 80-degree weather. >> you're used to atlanta. new york was warm. what happened? >> i have to ask you this. we sent out messages on the

facebook and twitter message to ask you questions. one of the questions was there. are you concerned at all of the stereotype of the angry black woman that you portray well on housewives -- >> why is it the black woman? why isn't it just women? >>ch i'm sure we have angry white women and angry korean women. they always say the angry black woman. i'm not worried about it at all. the people that know me know who i am and it's not affecting any of us. it certainly is not affecting me. everybody has an opinion. if i was quiet everybody would have something to say. i think that people have an opinion of you no matter what. as long as i'm okay with who i am and that is all that matters. my husband and children and my family is okay, so i'm okay. >> okay. >> i think they're proud of me. they probably want me to, you know, maybe you could do it a little bit different and maybe your delivery don't have to be so hard, maybe all of those things, but it is what it is. >> you have a lot of people

evening goes, a sprinkle here and a light shower there. you can see the clouds outside right now and the clouds are at 58 degrees and a wind out of the northwest and it's at 20 miles per hour and it is going to be another breezy day coming up tomorrow. 60 in quantico, feeling like early april, than early may. our temperatures overnight we'll drop to 49 by 11:00 p.m. and 43 by 5:00 p.m. we'll have clear skies late tonight and early part of the day tomorrow. we'll have lots of sunshine around the area tomorrow. let's talk about where showers are right now. let's zoom in, we've seen light showers making their way through prince georges county. most of them are sitting just to our north and west, coming through leesburg and coming through loudoun county to fairfax county and they're moving southeast ward down through the area. all of this associated with this upper level disturbance. you can see it right there.

it's been spinning into west virginia. we'll get a few more light showers and clearing out by late tonight early part of the day tomorrow when the area of high pressure moves in. so, cool tonight again. there will be some locations well to the west our area around i-81 in the valleys that can be dropping down into the 30s. for friday, the return of some showers and maybe even a thunderstorm, but that will be during the afternoon and during the evening. there's friday at 8:00 p.m. your forecast for the evening continued cool, breezy, dropping from 56 to 52 degrees. a look at your morning, breezy. start again and it will be pretty chilly, 38 to 43. so at the beginning of the day tomorrow you're likely to need a jacket again, but much nicer by the afternoon. it will be warmer and more like may, 67 to 70 degrees. dry for tomorrow. the rain returns on friday during the afternoon around 3:00, 4:00 or so. saturday and sunday right now,

welcome back at 4:30, everybody. i'm jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. here's what's happening at this hour. president obama has decided to not release any death photos of osama bin laden. white house officials say the president talked with other officials about whether to release the graphic photo, but ultimately decided there's no need to do so especially amid concerns that the pictures could be used as a propaganda tool. >> fire officials say someone renting a home in rockville trying to change the dryer from gas to electric is what caused the home to explode overnight. it left one of the two people inside with life-threatening injuries. two school busses collided in montgomery county injuring nine elementary children. it happened around 9:00 at stringtown road and route 3 55

in maryland. it sent it off the road. no injuries were serious. stocks took a tumble today. the dow dropping more than 83 points. the nasdaq losing 13 and the s&p 500 lost nine points to close at 1347. prince charles is busy making the rounds in his three-day trip to washington. this morning he spoke at a conference about sustainable agriculture at georgetown university. as news 4's megan mcgrath reports students put studying on hold for a chance to meet a prince. >> reporter: not exactly the huge crowd that gathered for will and kate's wedding, but these georgetown students braved the cold and rain in order to catch a glimpse of prince charles. >> i've been obsess with the royals for a really long time and especially with the hype from the wedding and i want to see prince charles and let him know i'm here for prince harry. >> i want to see prince charles. i don't know when i'll see him again in my life time.
