yards from its normal shore line. >> this is all astounding. i mean, it's just overwhelming to see it so high. >> and getting even higher. emergency teams are helping dozens move to higher ground. some loaded into city buses to push through the water. a ride to safety before all of the roads in the lowest lying areas are blocked and in downtown memphis the fight to keep the water out continues. men and machines working around the clock and against the clock with a near record crest expected as early as tomorrow, but for some -- >> if we had a hole in our living room and cut a little hole, we could probably use our fishing poles right now and do some serious catfishing. >> time has already run out. the lower level of jeanie's home is already under water and now all she can do is watch and wait. >> we wait and see, and hopefully, you know, if the

water does recede rather quickly, maybe that will minimize the damage to the inside of the house. >> a hope that is shared by so many along the river right now. jay gray, nbc news, memphis. >> meanwhile, officials in louisiana are worried about the memphis flooding creating a slow developing disaster at the mississippi delta. we are following a developing story right now. two flights have been diverted today, both after security scares on board. the first situation happened on a plane heading from houston to chicago. passengers say a man tried to pry open the emergency exit door near the front of the plane. that plane made an emergency landing in st. louis and the man was taken into custody there. meanwhile earlier in the day, a delta flight from detroit to san diego was diverted to albuquerque, new mexico. officials say the flight attendant found a suspicious note in the bathroom. two flights have been diverted today. meanwhile, osama bin laden is dead but the work to stop al qaeda far from over.

the united states is planning to question bin laden's three widows who are in custody in pakistan. white house officials want to know how the terrorist leader was hiding in virtually plain sight for several years. they also want pakistan to hand over all of the intelligence gathered from the compound. now american authorities are turning their attention to finding ayman al zawahri, bin laden's presumed successor. >> we don't know to what extent the strategist going for the big attack, which we've always presumed was a core element of the strategy, was driven by bin laden personal. >> i and i don't -- i think at this point we can't declare al qaeda strategically defeated. they continue to be a threat to the united states. >> many u.s. lawmakers say it is very important to keep pakistan as an ally because there are still terrorists living there. two new york city lawmakers want the $50 million bounty for osama bin laden to go to 9/11 victims. u.s. congressman anthony weiner

and gerald nadler announced a bill to put the funds to organizations that helped first responders, survivors and victims' families. the state department has not said whether any tipster who helped in bin laden's capture was eligible for the reward. back here we're learning more about a violent home invasion in georgetown. police say three men broke into the house along is the street around 1:30 saturday morning. one of the men had a gun. police say the men attacked the residents, tied them up and stole electronics and othlaptop. break-ins are not the norm for that community. >> this area is quite quiet and a very unusual thing that happened, very unusual. >> so far, no arrests. police do not believe this was a random attack though. well, it's usually quite bus they time of year, the georgetown waterfront but devastating floodwaters shut

down the restaurants there, but this mother's day a little life has returned to the area. darcy spencer is live along the waterfront for us on this mother's day where things are slowly starting to return to normal, we understand, huh? >> that's right, craig. it certainly has been a slow process. you know, mother's day weekend is tipically the biggest weekend for some of the restaurants here, and, unfortunately, there's still quite a few empty seats. mother's day. it's the big event in the restaurant business. everyone wants to take mom out to eat for her special day, but here at the washington harbor in georgetown, business by some accounts is down by a third at some restaurants. some still aren't up to speed following a devastating flood last month. >> not going too well for us due to the interior of our restaurant being construction sites as we speak. >> reporter: popular restaurants tony and joe's and nick's riverside grill are only open for patio seating with a limited menu. on mother's day the inside seating would typically be packed, but it will be at least

a month before they will reopen. >> so, of course, it affected a lot of families, so we're -- we're happy that we're temporarily open out here. >> reporter: some of the owners are concerned that the management company has not been able to get the fountain going which detracts from the waterfront setting. getting business back is critical for workers whose livelihoods were put on hold when the flooding happened. >> the menu is little but it's great and the food is fresh, and i'm sure a lot of people are enjoying it, just to be back here on the waterfront. >> reporter: tony and joe's and nick's are sharing a grill, serving hamburgers, shrimp, oifrts and a few other items, but for some it's not just about the food. it's a chance to spend mother's day on the potomac and support the businesses that are struggling to rebuild. >> hopefully things will drum up this weekend as people hear that things are open again. happy to be out here. >> they are devastated. a real mess, lots of work to do.

vietnam veteran who succumbed to here's back in twin 40 years after a fire fight was remembered at the vietnam veterans memorial. as derrick ward explains, he was honored for not only success but for what he did after he left the battlefield. >> reporter: another name added to the ward. his wounds came during the '68 tet offensive. he rushed from cover to the line of fire to help a fallen comrade. >> at first he resisted about, but then suddenly jumped up and ran to go get his friend and he could never explain why he did that. as he got to his friend he felt like someone kicked him in the back. >> reporter: paralyzed from the waist down and after coming home and going through arduous physical therapy he would take up yet another fight for the cause of disabled veterans. his new theater of operation, department of labor here in washington and worked with other wounded vietnam veterans, others who understand how the wounds that maime can plague their victims far behind the field of conflict. >> some of it just takes a long
