memphis tonight, forcing hundreds more from their homes today. the race is on to prepare for more dangerous flooding as the region braces for the highest mississippi river crest in more than 70 years. jay gray has the latest on another fight against mother nature. >> reporter: the water continues to climb almost as quickly as the concern in memphis. >> what's going to happen? where's it going to top? >> reporter: over 47 feet past its major flood stage and forecasters say on the way to a near-record crest of 48 feet as early as tomorrow night. >> this is all astounding. i mean, it's just overwhelming to see it so high. >> reporter: hundreds have been drawn to the water's edge as it creeps closer to the city. some to take a picture. others to stop and stare. >> i caught a water event. all the people that have lived here all their lives were saying

residents in the area say the intersection where the crash happened is notoriously dangerous. have they peaked? after an excruciating streak of rising gas prices, crude oil prices plunged 15% in the steepest 39 in 2 1/2 years. now experts say gas prices are poiseded to follow suit. darcy spencer is lurch along georgia avenue with that story tonight. darcy? >> reporter: yes, some analysts are saying gas prices are going to decline by 50 cents a gallon in the coming weeks. we talked to motorists tonight. some of them are saying, that's great news, it's going to put more money in their pockets. others are saying it's too

little, too late. the average cost of a gallon of gas now stands at $4. but in many places in the d.c. metro area, you'll pay even more. >> i'm broke. a lot. >> spent it on the tank. >> every dollar i make go on the tank. >> reporter: aaa says we've seen 44 consecutive days of rising fuel prices. that's the third longest streak in u.s. history. for some these budget-busting prices are forcing them to stay home more and stop dininout. >> i'm not going out as much. it's just basically home, work, day care. >> reporter: aaa also says there's good news on the horizon. gas prices are expected to begin a slow but steady fall. and that could mean as much as a 50 cent a gallon decrease. some analysts are predicting a dime drop in prices by memorial day. >> consumers do not like $4 gas. they have stopped driving as much. they have stopped buying as much base. and that took the legs from out

houston to chicago. passengers say a man tried to pry open the emergency exit door, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in st. louis. the plane was delayed about an hour. one mantels nbc that he helped flight attendants subdue the suspect until they could land safely. >> they were on him. i was one of those on him. he finally came down and he wanted to sleep. i turned him over, put my knee on his back. they went and got cuffs for me. >> the unruly passenger was detained in st. louis. no one was hurt. doctors say a woman stranded for weeks was barely alive when she was found. now there's a desperate search on to find her missing hulse. rita and her husband albert had some sort of trouble during a drive to las vegas. that was about seven weeks ago. friday, hunters spotted the couple's van on a national forest road at the nevada/idaho border. rita rationed the snacks the couple had with them for the trip.

breaking news in georgetown right now. one woman has been taken to the hospital after a disturbance at the loew's movie theater. d.c. police tell us someone inside that theater yelled something. that caused a panic and witnesses say the moviegoers jumped up and rushed toward the doors. the entire building was evacuated as a precaution. breaking news in georgetown at the theater. we'll continue to monitor that situation and pass along more

what little bit of cloud cover we have left in the mornings should start to thin out by my to late afternoon. showers chances will stay back out to our west. by the time we get to the end of the day on tuesday afternoon, mostly sunny skies around here. again, shower changes staying way back to our west. that's the only real potential part of uncertainty in the forecast. i think we're going to be dry without any rain chances until friday if that boundary gets just a little closer to us by late wednesday or thursday, we might have to put the drop in on thursday. as of now we're dry for the rest of the work and school week. clearing skies by daybreak. wakeup temperatures mid 40s in the cooler suburbs to around 50 in town. tomorrow mostly sunny. a delightful day. sun doesn't go down until 8:08 after a beautiful 75 degree day in washington. 76 tuesday and wednesday. 77 thursday. a few more clouds coming back thursday. i think for now rain chances hold off until probably friday afternoon through the day saturday and probably ending sunday morning. like you mentioned at 6:00, we've got time to tweak
