tonight a suspected drunk driver is blamed for a crash that killed three. officials in europe think they now what caused that deadly e. coli xwrout break. and katie couric is getting ready to announce where she's taking her new talk show. i'm craig melvin. joggers, walkers, bikers falling victim. there's concern whether police know how to get to the area. darcy spencer is live in northeast d.c. with more on where these attacks are happening and how authorities are responding. >> reporter: the crimes are happening here in the fifth police district. i'm told sometimes there is a delay in police response. that's because when people call 911, the person on the other end of the phone doesn't know where this trail is. bike, jog, or rollerblade on this paved path in northeast

d.c. and you could become a victim of crime. over the last couple of weeks there have been numerous robberies. one woman complains on a local list serve that she was zapped with a taser as she rode her bike here. >> i'm a little shocked by it because i haven't noticed anything suspicious or out of the ordinary lately. >> reporter: we found out, if you call for help there could be a problem. residents tell me that when people have called 911, dispatchers don't know where the path is. this 1 1/2 mile stretch, known as the met branch trail, opened last year. >> this year and last year, when people were either attacked or reporting suspicious activity, mpd's unified call center was unable to identify the area where the trail was. >> reporter: the neighborhood commissioner tim parks says it's sometimes taken the call center five to eight minutes to figure out where the trail is. those who use it say they're not surprised. >> i was surprised to see you guys here. like, what in the world is the news camera crew doing here, how

did they find this place? it's off the beaten path. i don't know how you would describe it. >> reporter: not only is the path off the beaten track, it's somewhat secluded in certain areas. there are plenty of hiding spots for would-be robbers to wait for their victims. the police list serve has been bombarded with people complaining about attacks. one woman complains of getting a broken wrist during a robbery. another victim said police told him to avoid the trail. he questions whether police want residents to give it over to the thugs. the commander for this police district tells me this is a very serious problem. he's in the process of figuring out what the scope of it is, how many crimes there have been, and whether they're all connected. a community meeting is planned on this issue later on this month. three people are dead tonight in and one person under

arrest after a suspected dui crash in prince george's county. it happened on northbound 210 near wilson bridge drive in ft. washington. police say a gray mazda collided with a gmc yukon. all three in the mazda were killed. the driver of the yukon was arrested. police believe alcohol and speed were both factors in the crash and charges against the driver are pending. it looks like vegetable sprouts caused the deadly e. coli outbreak in europe. scientists in germany expect to get tests back tomorrow. the tainted sprouts came from an organic farm in germany that's now been shut down. they were served at at least four restaurants over the last month. at least 22 deaths are now blamed on the e. coli. more than 200 people have gotten sick, including four americans. those americans got sick after traveling to germany. back here tonight, in arizona a wildfire of historic proportions continues to burn in the upper midwest tens of

thousands fleeing from rising water. in the deep south it's oppressive triple-digit temperatures. janet shamlian with the extreme weather hitting this country. >> reporter: a major wildfire in arizona. fueled by high temperatures and gusty winds, sending smoke as far as new mexico and southern colorado. some 1,300 firefighters from across the country are battling the blaze, which has ravaged more than one forty thousand acres. >> the column that's up in the air is about -- the last few days in excess of 30,000 feet. when you have something that large with that much heat, it kind of generates its own weather. >> reporter: the heat is on across much of the nation's south and midsection. >> we are not looking cute right now. you are looking so hot. >> reporter: temperatures running 15 degrees above normal. >> struggling. >> reporter: feeling more like deep summer than late spring. a number of new records this

weekend. 100 degrees in tyler, texas. 100 in new orleans. 100 in jackson, mississippi. 102 in pensacola. temperatures right now feel more like the mid to latter part of july with temperatures even in the north rising into the mid and upper 90s. so this is catching a lot of folks off-guard. in chicago, a half marathon was stopped mid-race as heat and humidity sent a dozen runners to the emergency room. one man who collapsed later died. >> how are you doing, sir? >> reporter: in houston a blistering 102 degrees today. shattering a record set more than 30 years ago. >> ridiculous. why does the other part of the country have all this rain, too much water, and we don't have any? >> reporter: with texas stuck in one of the worst droughts on record, public fountains have become neighborhood cooling centers. an early plunge into a summer-like heat wave. and what has been a season of extremes. >> the missouri river has started to overflow its banks,

prompting a flood emergency in seven midwest states. the army corps of engineers is opening the flood gates there along the river because of record rain and snowfall. thousands are being ordered to leave and there have been massive evacuations across the upper midwest. in iowa, they're using a blackhawk helicopter to drop 1,000-pound sandbags on a levee leak in the southwestern part of this state. the river may not crest for weeks. and evacuations could last for months. some kids in the district can't take a dip in a city pool because of a recall. four kiddy pools at d.c. pools are closed. they're affected by a nationwide recall on pool drains. kiddie pools at harry thomas, upshur, theodore hagans and rumsey are closed and officials don't know when the new drains will arrive. the regular pools are still open. tonight d.c. police are

trying to figure out why a local football recruiter was gunned down outside mckinley tech high school in northeast. 36-year-old ralph thomas from temple hills was killed friday night in the school's parking lot as a girls' flag football team was playing. he helped recruit players for the d.c. falcons, a semi-professional football team that often plays at the school. police have charged omar crawford from landover with his murder. at this point no one's saying much about what led up to the shooting. >> whatever it may be, it wasn't worth taking a life. especially not in this fashion. in the way it happened. he's a young guy. it seems like he was doing a lot of good things with the team. so whatever the reason was, it's definitely not worth it. >> the owner of the d.c. falcons tells news 4 thomas had been with the team about a month. they are scheduled to play at mckinley tech tuesday night. a look at the week ahead. the former head of the

international monetary fund is due back in new york city tomorrow. that's one of the stories we'll be following. dominique strauss-kahn was charged with sex assault. police say he attacked and tried to rape a maid at a luxury new york city hotel. he spent a few days in jail but since then he's been on house arrest in an upscale manhattan townhouse. part of the beltway will be closed this week. crews will be working on high-occupancy toll lanes in alexandria. work will happen on the northbound side of 495 near the 395 intersection every night 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., all lanes closed. traffic will be detoured to edsel road. former cbs news and today show anchor katie couric is expected to announce she'll be working with disney in her newest television venture. the "new york times" and "wall street journal" both reporting couric had been in talks to possibly return to nbc. but she's reportedly decided to take her planned afternoon talk show to abc. still ahead here tonight,

keurig. high-profile hackers say it's targeted a partner organization. lowell security says it stole and leaked nearly 180 passwords belonging to infraguard who shares information about physical and online threats to the united states. tonight the fbi says it is doing what it can to control the damage. the lowell security hackers also claim responsibility for hacking pbs and sony this week. it was on this day 30 years ago that five men got sick with a new unknown illness. today we know it as hiv. within a year, there were some 200 cases of the new illness. today, 60 million have been infected worldwide. 30 million have died. here in the united states 56,000 people contract hiv every year.

in d.c. the infection rate is well above the national average. and one of the highest in the country. the us airways plane that made that famous landing on the hudson river got stuck on a new jersey street corner. the airbus is being hauled on a flatbed truck to charlotte, north carolina, where it will be on display in an aviation museum. even without its wings, check it out, it was too wide to make an intersection in moorestown, new jersey. crews had to come in and take out street lights and part of a fence as well. the delay allowed locals to stop for pictures with the famous plane. the plane is expected to travel through maryland tomorrow. it's a growing problem, especially in d.c. the childhood obesity epidemic. there's a local pediatrician now who's made it her mission to do something about it. she's starting with kids in southeast at the washington school for girls.

they're stepping their way to a healthier life. >> reporter: for this group of seventh graders at the washington school for girls, getting down the precision and rhythm for their first step show is about more than just nailing a routine. >> all right, you guys ready? >> reporter: with every stomp, clap, and chant, there's the hope they'll start to reverse what's become a startling trend nationwide. >> good job, ladies. i like those smiles. >> reporter: the waste lines of america's children have been growing for decades. the centers for disease control says nearly 20% of kids between 6 and 11 are obese. >> i was like, okay -- >> reporter: when she's not coaching, dr. i don't lawn dra hancock of children's national medical center is a pediatrician at a clinic specializing in obese children. >> diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, problems with giants. i have several patients that have presented with several of those issues as early as 7 years old. >> reporter: hancock was once an elementary school teacher. when she started her step up to

health program she knew she can not use the classroom alone to change behaviors. drawing on her sorority days at ucla where she stepped and mentored she decided to create a fitness sister hood. in d.c., the need is great. 40% of young people in washington, d.c. are overweight or obese. experts say one of the major reasons is a lack of access to healthy food options. like many low-income areas there are not many places to get healthy food in the south east washington neighborhood. there are two grocery stores but lots of spots where the food is cheaper, faster, and not very good for you. >> if it's much easier to choose the high-calorie foods because of economic reasons, then it makes sense that's what they're going to do. >> reporter: stepping helps the girls burn about 300 calories per workout. >> i exercise a lot. i don't feel like p.e. is like a punishment. >> reporter: but she also uses the time after school to teach

a few clouds and isolated storm to our east. the weather headline, it's the hot weather. that's what's going to be here. especially on wednesday and thursday. you will really notice it. we have a dry, pleasant start to the week at least tomorrow. and perhaps wee end the week with some thunderstorms, which would help to cool us off. we will definitely be wanting that when you see how high the temp is going to be come about wednesday afternoon. at this late hour, those storms that came out of pennsylvania late in the day are dying down and we're going to have generally clear skies tonight. we're going to be starting our day in the middle 60s. taking you up to 84. and then as we think about some 90s coming in here by wednesday, yes, in writing, how about the 60s tomorrow morning. by the afternoon, a little warmer. we take baby steps. about 85 with lots of sun. here come the 90s. wednesday 95. thursday, that is a high of 97. but i checked and the record is up into the 100s. we're not going to be breaking a record with those temperatures but it's going to be feeling hot.

you may be surprised to learn some of our local police and fire chiefs are making more than some governors in our area. the governors of maryland and virginia make $175,000 and $150,000 a year respectively. now, compare that to d.c. police chief kathy lanier who brings in about $253,000 a year. montgomery county's top cop is a

close second at $216,000. montgomery county's fire and rescue chief makes $190,000. that's about $3,000 more than d.c.'s fire chief. crowds are flocking to disney world's magic kingdom in orlando for the annual gay day celebration, the gay and lesbian event started 21 years ago as a single day then grew into a week-long celebration that includes concerts, parties, even an arts festival. it's expected to generate about $1.5 million for the local economy there. there was a bit of controversy this year. a conservative christian group spent thousands of dollars to fly a banner warning potential park visitors that gay days was happening at the theme park. they have figured out the secret to making marriage work, and today they said i do all over again. 830 couples renewed their vows at the basilica of the national
