tonight, pressure is mounting on congressman anthony weiner. hours after admitting in tears that he sent inappropriate pictures to women other than his wife, house leaders are calling for an ethics investigation. and new women are now coming forward to talk about the social media exchanges they had with the congressman. good evening. i'm jim vance. >> and i'm doreen gentzler. new york congressman anthony weiner's tearful apology and press conference came just hours before one of six women he had inappropriate contact with over the internet went on a network news program to tell her story. in the hours since his apology, house minority leader nancy pelosi has asked for an ethics investigation of weiner's conduct while many are calling for the congressman's outright resignation. that is something the congressman has said emphatically he will not do. here's nbc's kelly o'donnell. >> reporter: wiping back tears,

an emotional anthony weiner admits he lied. >> i have made terrible mistakes. i've heard the people i care about the most and i'm deeply sorry. >> reporter: the new york democrat tried to unwind days of controversy. >> i've exchanged messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years. >> reporter: he said he sents messages and photos using facebook and twitter. the congressman appears shirtless and acknowledged more explicit vophotos of him exist. in congress 12 years, weiner says he will not step down. >> i am deeply regretting what i have done and i am not resigning. >> reporter: the 46-year-old married one of secretary hillary clinton's long-time aides last summer. his wife was not by his side today. >> we have been through a great deal together and we will weather this. i love her very much. and she loves me.

>> reporter: when the scandal broke last week, weiner claimed that he was a victim. >> i made it very clear i did not send the picture that my twitter account had been hacked. >> reporter: and today? >> to be clear, the picture was of me and i sent it. i'm deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife huma. >> reporter: it started on social media. >> one woman who came forward is a 26-year-old single mother from texas. she shared dozens of photographs, e-mails and other evidence that she says detail an in-depth sexting relationship with weiner. >> when does the beefcake come? >> i'm not sure when that one came, the exact date. >> why did this come? >> i have no idea why that one came. i guess to show me, hey, it's

really me. >> the congressman admits that she was one of the six women of whom he spoke. congressman weiner's wife has neither been seen nor heard from today. now to the john edwards case. e-mails between the former presidential candidate and a former speechwriter could be key in his trial. prosecutors accuse edwards of failing to report nearly $1 million allegedly spent to keep rielle hunter out of the public eye. the "associated press" says e-mails prove edwards was working on a speak acknowledging his out-of-wedlock child with hunter while denying the affair. he's pleaded not guilty after being indicted. another member of government under investigation for corruption. tonight harry thomas, jr., a councilman is accused of spending taxpayer money meant for kids on lavish trips and an suv.

craig melvin is at the wilson buildings where he asked leaders if a culture of corruption is in play in the city. >> reporter: right now, five of the 13 d.c. council members are or have recently been under investigation. despite accusations of wrongdoing, one council member told me it's not culture but coinciden coincidence. >> allegations are allegations. fact is fact. >> reporter: with that, harry thomas jr. became the latest council member to declare his innocence. according to the suit, thomas secretly diverted about $300,000 meant for youth baseball programs and spent much of the case playing golf at pebble beach and in vegas. they claim thomas also bought this $60,000 vehicle using the money.

d.c. council chair kwame brown wasted no time issuing this statement -- brown himself has been the target of two investigations. he had two luxury suvs at $2,000 a month each. then he was accused of failing to report hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions. yvette alexander is under investigation. the commission is looking into whether she's been misusing her constitue constituents fund. the council stripped this member of his assignments. and mayor vincent greg has spent much of time in his office answering questions about suleman brown. >> between the mayor, the chairman and a number of my

colleagues who are under some kind of investigation, it really doesn't make the city look good. >> reporter: d.c.'s attorney general is suing harry thomas, jr., for $1 million, that includes damages. we also learned earlier today that the u.s. attorney's office is now looking into criminal charges as well. from northwest, craig melvin, news 4. jim, back to you. >> thank you, craig. a d.c. police officer will be held without bond on charges of murdering a mother and her baby daughter. today, prosecutors revealed new details about the case in court. 39-year-old richmond phillips is accused of murdering 20-year-old wynetta wright last week and playing a role in the death of her 1-year-old daughter. court documents say wright and phillips were captured on surveillance camera near the crime scene talking for seven hours. the documents show the two were involved in a paternity case and had a court hearing scheduled just hours after wright was killed. violent and brazen attack

inside a house in fairfax county prompted police to go door to door in that neighborhood tonight. they showed people living in one herndon neighborhood the sketch of the man wanted for sexual assault. jackie bensen in herndon now with more. >> reporter: this is the image of what police believe the suspect looks like, information provided by the victim in this case. scary in any language. but this case presents a dilemma for fairfax county police detectives. how do you warn women they might be in danger when they can't understand you? detective dave crawl from the fairfax county police department goes door to door at the trevors run apartment on sunrise vali drive in herndon. made from the description a woman who was assaulted by the man early sunday morning. he then fled. police say the victim woke up to find the man in her bedroom. she told tkts he was holding a weapon. they won't say what it is. and wearing some type of light-colored cloth wrapped around his head. police say some of the victim's family members were home at the time. this resident says she was unaware of the assault until she was told this evening in spanish. the victim said the suspect is a large man. six feet tall with a heavy build and light complexion. he was bearing a black tank top and khaki-colored shorts. back to you. >> thanks, jackie. now to decision 2012, former senator rick santorum entered the presidential today. santorum lost his seat in pennsylvania in 2006.

he is a staunch social conservative who fought gay marriage and abortion rights. today he criticized the president on spending and said she is devaluing our moral currency. president obama made his first comments about the economic uncertainty. data released last week shows the economy created just 54,000 jobs in may, significantly less than the experts had forecast. >> this month, we had a disappointing number. but the previous three months, it exceeded expectations. if you even those out, the general trend line is we're creating jobs in the private sector. what we haven't done is create them as fast as i'd like. >> the president says europe's debt crisis is one factor undermining the recovery. he talked about it over dinner with german chancellor angela merkel tonight. coming up tonight, a robbery at a church in the middle of a sunday service. we'll report how police caught the gunman and an accomplice so

two men have been locked up, accused of robbing a church while a service was under way. it happened just before midnight last night at the christ our lord ministry on jeff davis highway in woodbridge. police say one of the men went into the the church through a back door and threatened four people, counting the collection plate. he had a gun. a good description helped police catch up with the gunman and his accomplice a short time later. both men are facing several charges, including robbery. a church in bladensburg is undergoing big changes. they've voted to convert to cathicism. it allows anglican parishes to come into the catholic church as a community. st. luke's was founded back in the '50s and has about 100

sullenberger landed in the hudson river a couple of years ago went down i-90 in maryland today. it's being moved to an aviation museum in charlotte, north carolina. until now, the plane had been in a warehouse in new jersey. that plane ended up in the hudson river back in 2009 after a flock of geese knocked out power to its engines. the world's largest commercial aircraft landed in our area today. air france is running daily service from paris to dulles. the plane is huge. it's nearly a football field in length and includes two passenger decks with four cabin classes -- l first class offers full beds and changing rooms. the plane requires a staff of 22 flight attendants. d.c. delegate eleanor holmes norton is throwing support behind people who want to dance on the mall. the congresswoman says the dancing flash mobs at the

volcanos. it is very amazing when you do see it. you have to have quite an eruption to get a column of air that high. now, as far as our temperatures were concerned today, outside right now, pretty nice night out there towards dupont circle, it's just beautiful outside. going to be a great start to tomorrow. then we're going to start to see things get on the warm side. we reached 88 today. low of 66. well above average for those afternoon high temperatures. sunset was at 8:30. it will stay after 8:30 all the way through july 21st, the days will continue to get longer over the next two weeks or so. them they start to get a little bit shorter. but our sun will set after 8:30 for the next few weeks or so. winds out of the south at about 3 miles per hour. 63 in frederick. live digital doppler, no rain to

talk about. i think we're going to stay dry this week and i think we're going to be very hot this week. almost no clouds in the entire picture. you have to go back into the ohio valley to see some of those clouds trying to make their way in. high pressure is dominating the entire eastern portion of the nation. not a whole lot of rain at all. warm temperatures for us during the day tomorrow but not a whole lot of humidity. i think we'll get to 90 tomorrow but i think it will be a comfortable 90. and then here comes the hot air. this will be anything but comfortable coming up on wednesday and on thursday. mostly sunny tomorrow morning. good start, 60 to 67 degrees. tomorrow afternoon, temperatures will climb to around that 90-degree mark tomorrow. but with low humidity, not all that bad. winds out of the southwest at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. enjoy tomorrow because then, well, we get to 96 on wednesday. we get to 98 on thursday. and we could be talking about a heat index between 100 and 105 on thursday. friday, good chance of

draft tonight. but this is different from years night when the nationals automatically got the first pick. there were surprises tonight and it started with the number two pick. the seattle mariners took danny hulzen. the 21-year-old had been expected to possibly be available for the nats. but the mariners went for him right off the bat. no washington or virginia player has ever gone higher. he was stellar for the cavs this weekend driving in five runs, striking out 12 as uva rolled on in the ncaa tournament. but tonight he's thinking about his future. >> i was completely and utterly shocked that i was picked there. i had kind of an idea that i might be picked somewhere in the top area, but never would i have thought it would be number two. it's an incredible, incredible

rockville. 136 golfers played for a spot. fred funk who turns 55 next tuesday was one of those. he shot a 67 on the south course, the side of woodmont that he said he didn't know very well at all. then he came back to shoot a 68 on the north side. it was a combined 135. he was tied for the third best score out of the 112 players. he was having a good day. tapping it in there on 18. gets the ball on the green. two-putting. he's not sure if he makes the cut at that point. i made it? not the first emotional moment fred funk would have. >> i can't talk right now. >> i understand. >> it meant a lot to me. finally played the way i know how for the first time all year.
