messages telling me their dogs are pacing and hiding under the recliner. i'm happy to say none of the storms are severe. they're just producing heavy rain and occasional lightning and thunder. live digital doppler has you covered. i-95 from baltimore to d.c. and alexandria. this is not a severe thunderstorm but a nice soaking rain. if you live in burke, chantilly, the clearing line coming up pretty soon. 72 degrees. humidity, 90% up. just ticked down to 71. winds southwest at 10. here's the first batch of rain that is coming through right now. we're going to get a lull in the action mid to late morning, and another round of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. we've been telling you this is the stormiest day of the holiday weekend. i'm staying with that forecast. we will get close to 90 today. good news is fourth of july is looking good.

personal fireworks are legal where you live. it's all right there on our home page >> in our other headlines, a warning this morning as you celebrate this holiday weekend. police in northern virginia are joining force toss crack down on drunk drivers. the operation come as officer investigate a crash that killed three and may have involved alcohol. derrick ward has more on the safety crackdown. >> reporter: before the sun hit this fourth of july weekend our area had already experienced a crash with fatalities. three people died when this car lost control on mississippi avenue in southeast. speed and spirits may have factored into this crash. >> there is evidence of alcohol but we can't say for sure if that played a factor. >> there was a knock on the door in the morning stating that they wanted the parents, wanted to speak to the parents of the kids and said they had passed in a car accident.

>> police from several jurisdictions are calling extra eyes for dwis. >> we're trying to send a message we're not going to tolerate dwis. >> 64 eyes. some will be in cars easily recognized. others you may not notice until you cross the line. what they won't be doing is sitting at checkpoints. >> officers can be selective. obviously you can auto for driving behavior. with checkpoints, there's mandates and processes you have to adhere to. >> they have doubled the number involved this year. designated driver or take a cab if you are going to drink. invariably some will get behind the wheel when they shouldn't. >> they get caught up in the

spirit of a party or holiday event and make a bad decision to get in the vehicle and drive away. >> make that decision to drink and drive and your decision may be diverted, a ride in one of these. authorities hope by doubling the officers they will be more effective. derrick ward, news 4 today. a man is dead after being hit by a car in prince george's county. the victim was hit just before midnight in the 8500 block of central off, landover area. they say the victim is an adult male and the driver who hit him did remain on the scene. the driver has not been charged with anything at this point. this morning firefighters are trying to figure out what sparked a tragic fire on shore drive in edgewater area. firefighters say heavy smoke and

flames were coming from the home when they got there. neighbors told them an elderly woman was trapped inside with her daughter. and both were disableded. firefighters were able to save the mother but could not get to the other woman before she died. a next door neighbor said her first instinct was to run inside but it was just too hot. >> you get so close to the door and it's so hot. you just can't do anything. just fear. fear just engulfs you because you know there are people in there and you can't do anything. it's helplessness, absolutely helplessness. >> the woman who was rescued was taken to a burn unit. there is no word on her condition this morning. a big day in orlando. today lawyers begin closing arguments in the casey anthony trial. the defense rested its case without calling the florida mother to the stand. it claims 2-year-old caylee

drowned in the swimming pool. casey a anthony is charged with first degree murder. if convicted she could face the death penalty. today marks one year since a man trying to protect his neighbors during a robbery was gunned down himself. 66-year-old january parnell was getting ready for a community barbecue in southeast wa wafpshn washington. since that day, his own family has been searching for a killer. >> every day, you know, you hear something on tv. it's like, wow, i wonder if those were the guys. >> for the last year the twins have been desperately searching for closure after their father was gunned down preparing for a july fourth barbecue. 66-year-old john parnell was killed on nelson place in southeast d.c. during a robbery gone wrong. >> just to know my dad's life

was worth less than $100 is extremely frustrating. and it really makes me angry. >> last july 3rd, around 4:00 in the afternoon, neighbors were preparing for the annual community cookout. suddenly, police say five men with guns ambushed the barbecue area demanding money. parnell, who spent much of his life as a protective services officer, stepped in trying to defend his neighbors. that's when witnesses say he was shot in the neck and stomach and died on the scene. >> residents here in this southeast neighborhood say things just haven't been the same since he passed away. to mark the one-year anniversary, neighbors will come back out here to this barbecue area for a candlelight vigil and all-night campout to remember the man they called the mayor. >> within the community he did everything that he could. john was the type that he would give you the shirt off his back.

>> the gunmen weren't wearing masks and some people are believed to have seen their faces. parnell's daughters are hoping anyone who knows something will come forward even if they're scared of retaliation. >> the scariest thing is an innocent man lost his life. and a murderer and a thief are able to walk free. that's what people should be afraid of. dominique strauss-kahn enjoyed his first day off house arrest, going out with his wife for a few hours. he left his manhattan town house for three hours yesterday. on friday a judge dismissed his bail after new revelations about his accuser's credibility. the "new york times" is reporting that strauss-kahn's accuser, a hotel maid, lied repeatedly about her past, including cheating on her taxes and lying on her immigration paperwork. this case has become so compromised the only possible option is to dismiss the case.

the republican field for president has gotten even larger. there are now 14 official candidates running for the republican primary after michigan lawmaker thad mccotter throu threw his hat into the ring. >> to serve as your president of the united states. >> mccotter made that comment yesterday. the 45-year-old is currently a member of the house financial services committee and political analysts consider him a long shot for the nomination. meanwhile, another contender for president, michele bachmann, was trying to drum up support for her campaign. she stopped to dine in iowa city and met with potential voters as part of a four-day swing through iowa who officially announced

her candidacy last week. a recent poll shows bachman was nearly tied at the top with former massachusetts governor mitt romney. newlyweds prince william and kate middleton have a busy day ahead in their american tour. they traveled to quebec city, overnight. it comes after a whirlwind of a day through ottawa and montreal. peter alexander has more on their trip. >> reporter: even in a glamorous gray dress and heels she wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty. joining a dozen couples celebrating 50 and 60 years together, all of them married april 29th, the same day as william and kate. in an exchange reminiscent of princess diana, he said their kindness gave a tremendous lift,

in the southwest record heat is making this holiday weekend miserable for some. take a look. phoenix, arizona hit a high of 118 degrees yesterday. that topped a 10-year-old record of 116 degrees. now, on top of the heat, strong winds blew down power poles knocking out power to 4,000 homes, which means no air-conditioning. clouds likely kept temperatures from reaching 120. >> boy. >> it is the desert after all, right? >> and it is a dry heat. >> whatever that means. >> whatever that means. exactly. >> it wasn't nearly that hot here yesterday. >> it actually got up to 95. >> my best friend and his new wife were here. we were out on the mall and ended up getting a taxi. we took the metro.

in harm's way. the biggest challenges facing the firefighters battling the largest wildfire in new mexico's history. welcome to news 4 today. i'm kimberly suiters. >> and i'm aaron gilchrist. it's sunday, july 3rd. firefighters in the southwest are busy this holiday weekend trying to put out a massive wildfire in new mexico. >> it is the state's largest ever burning near las alamos. it's still too dangerous for people to return hope. >> here's nbc's charles hadlock. >> as firefighters try to keep the flames at bay with controlled burns, the runaway fire continues to consume trees and brushes in las alamos. it has blackened 113,000 acres, but it's moving away from town and away from the nuclear

laboratory. good news, according to chief doug tucker but not good enough. >> we're between a rock and a hard place. we're trying to repopulate but we don't want to put people in danger. >> it looks like a ghost town. most of the 12,000 residents have evacuated. officials want to keep them away for now for fears the winds could suddenly shift and push the fire closer. the nuclear lab will remain closed until workers can return home. the lack director said the emergency has subsided. >> we have assessed the risk of the laboratory to be lower. so we're able to change the status down based on that assessment. new mexico is a hot, dry tinder box where dozens of fires have burned nearly a million acres. fourth of july fireworks are out of the question. >> do not use your fireworks in your neighborhoods. can you imagine a home catching fire because a bottle rocket flew up on to someone's rooftop. >> if residents can return home

lull. temperatures in the 70s this morning. then we're going to sneak an early high, around 90 or 91 with more afternoon showers and thunderstorms. i will have the rest of your weather forecast through the holiday weekend when i say you guys in a few minutes. back in our headlines now, the secret service calling a plane that fly into a restricted airspace in maryland an accident. it veered near the camp david presidential retreat yesterday afternoon. the president is there with his family this weekend. they had fighter jets escort the plane to hagerstown. the last time the obamas were at camp david, they intercepted another plane that entered the airspace. authorities called that incident an accident as well. the july 4th celebration on the national mall is one of the biggest in the country. with it comes big security concerns. this is the first celebration since u.s. special forces killed osama bin laden.

jane checked with u.s. park police who say they have every detail for this huge party covered. >> reporter: on the national mall, signs of increased security is everywhere. as tens of thousands flock to the folk life festival ahead of monday's independence day celebration. >> i feel it's safe, make sure everybody feels safe coming to the event, you know? so i think it's safe. >> reporter: in the 10 years since the september 11th attacks, federal law enforcement agencies say they have not changed their visible tactics for the fourth of july on the national mall. invisible, they say, is another matter. park police have plainclothes officers and technology. because when special forces raided osama bin laden's campaign they found documents saying al qaeda was considering an attack on the u.s.

he snapped these moats of these officers at m street and 29th. he was on the sidewalk first across the street, then on the same side as the police activity. after a few minutes he was asked to stop taking pictures and to produce an i.d. >> they told me to put the camera away, to stop reporting and that i am being detained and it is unlawful to photograph and audio record police officers. >> it's part of our free speech, just as police can take pictures of citizens out on the street. >> aclu filed suit alleging since he wasn't interfering with police work, those officers violated his first and fourth amendment rights. >> he was not free to just walk away because she was holding onto his i.d. >> they're nuts to detain
