good evening, i'm doreen gentzler. >> and i'm jim vance. doug kammerer. >> watching a couple of stoppers out there. one came through loudon county. that storm now has completely died out but more storms back to the west and western portions of virginia and into western virginia right,flash flood warnings for west virginia and frederick county in towards virginia and also for the rest of us, a flash flood watch in effect for the day tomorrow. some areas tomorrow could pick up one to two inches of rain. maybe more. tomorrow is going to be a very wet day. a storm system moving in from the west is going to impact the entire day on our friday. i'll let you know who i think will get what coming up in my full forecast. >> okay, doug, thank you. we're following some breaking news out of grand rapids, michigan, tonight, that's where police have cornered a man suspected of shooting seven people to death including two children. police began a manhunt today after finding four people dead

in one home, and three others dead in a home across town, after a high-speed chase the suspect crashed his car and ran into a stranger's home taking two hostages there. he has since released one of the hostages, but the standoff continues at this hour. we will upstadate you if anythi option this broadcast. in laurel, maryland, a bad accident has shut down part of the baltimore-washington parkway. two medevac helicopters were called to air, lift people out of there. we're told four people were injured. it appears at least one car went off the road and into the woods. it is not clear yet just how many cars were involved. again, this is along the parkway near route 170 in laurel. stopped traffic for close to an hour to the flyover ramp to interstate 95. that's in beltsville this evening. a man was changing a tire when he was hit by a car. the accident caused a chain reaction including one car that

caught fire. five people were taken to the hospital. two children included. the man who was changing the tire died from his injuries. synthetic marijuana was outlawed in virginia back in march, but the police say that didn't stop from selling it for months afterwards. derrick ward is there more with this recent fwhauft happened apparently a few blocks from the school, derrick. >> reporter: indeed it did, jim. in false plaza in falls church, and they're cleosed now but the did open up for business. because authorities are just now releasing information on this raid, that happened back on the 28th of june. >> one of the first have a church warrant and has collected a number of items off of the streets. >> the item, packets of k2, spice, mojo, red dragon or zohi, all names for a substance that's

only been around since 1995. authorities seized more than a thousand packets at the arabica tobacco in false churches last week. because of a synthetic compound that mimics the active ingredient in cannabis but it can also and has caused unconsciously and seizures. >> it's actually very dangerous and it's a synthetic compound that people are putting into their bodies and honestly, medically they don't know how to treat it once there's an overzmees until recently it was legally available over the counter because authorities didn't know how to treat it, but as of this past march, it's been illegal in virginia. >> we are trying to make sure that we deter this sold in the community as we've had a number of complaints from city officials, we've had a couple of orchdoses of juveniles in the community and it's of great concern. >> reporter: the shop's owner said it was only sold to cust

americans of a legal age at least 18 when was legal. no arrests were made during last week's raid. and the substance that was seized has been sent to a lab now to determine exactly what it is. it does turn out to be illegal k-2 the penalties can range from a misdemeanor to a felony depending on the amount. back to you. >> derrick ward, thanks. several agencies worked together to arrest a man suspected of setting fires in the district. one of those fires led to a roof collapse in northeast d.c. back in april. five firefighters were injured in that event. even after the firefighters were injured, police say a man named maurice dews continued to set fires. investigators got a break when they say somebody called this to say they saw dews starting a fire on tuesday night. there were bear sightings in

two residential neighborhoods in our area today. one in maryland, one in virginia. experts say young bears are on the move in time of year, and the mothers aren't far behind. darcy spencer has the story. >> reporter: this cell phone video shows a young black bear devouring the seeds in a bird feeder in the backyard of a bethesda home. >> we have five, six foxes that come up, about a pack of raccoons about six or seven of them. you name it, we have it. but not bears, that's a new one. >> reporter: dave calvin took the video. he said the bear drank water from the bird bath before knocking it over. >> i was kind of shocked and couldn't even think to get a shot of it and it ran off when it saw me and i thought that was the end of it, and then about ten minutes later it came back. >> reporter: it was about 4:00 in the afternoon, dave was standing here in the sunroom when he turned, looked behind

him he a black bear just a few feet away from the other side of the glass. that's what he grabbed his cell phone. took photos of the bear and called the department of natural resources but he wasn't happy with their response. >> they basically told me, we live with bears. >> reporter: there have been other bear sightings in the region including leesburg where residents have seen a mother bear with her cub. >> we are going to see them this time of the year. the time of the year the 2-year-old cubs the last year's cubs are being kicked out of the nest by mom and they're trying to find a place of their own. >> reporter: will hope the authorities will trap the bear and release them to an area that are safe for bears before he, someone or something gets hurt. >> here will get in trouble and what happens in two, three years when he's no longer just a gangely adolescent but is a full-grown black bear? >> reporter: darcy spencer, news4. president obama said today's debt reduction talks were productive but there was no breakthrough. he met with top republican and democratic lawmakers at the

white house. he said everyone agrees the debt limit must be raised before the august 2nd deadline and that any deal will be politically difficult for both side. democrats are resistant to cutting entitlement programs like social security. republicans oppose any tax hikes even on the wealthy. negotiations are set to continue on sunday. casey anthony will be released from jail next sunday. a judge today sentenced her to four years in prison for lying to the police about her daughter's disappearance. she was given credit for time served and good behavior, but the court said that casey could also be charged now with a cost of searching for her daughter and the cost of trying the case. >> this search for her went on from july through december. over several months trying to

find caylee marie anthony. >> there's now a campaign under way to require parents to notify police about their child's disappearance. supporters say it would be called, caylee's law. still ahead tonight, a controversial decision about guns on campus. how the policy at uva could impact virginia tech and george mason. new claims that a plan in alexandria may be making people in the district sick. a local mayor's re-election speech gets a little watered down. and we're going to tell you why one golfer celebration may ruin his dreams

colleges across virginia are reviewing a decision by attorney general ken cuccinelli that says it is okay for students at the university of virginia to carry concealed weapons on campus. students must have a permit from the state and the university can prohibit people from carrying guns in the open. it's believed that george mason's policy restricting weapons in campus buildings and at campus events is specific enough. no need too to change that one. virginia tech officials will meet with the board of visitors decide if language needs to be revised on its policy banning weapons. voters in maryland likely will have the opportunity to decide whether to grant in-state

college tuition benefits to the children of illegal immigrants. opponents petitioned for a refer endoum what is called the dream act. that act passed back in the spring. they now have enough verified signatures on their petition according to the "washington times" newspaper, this suspend the dream act until voters make a decision in the election in november of 2012. a new report on alexandria's sulphur dioxide plant has d.c. mayor vincent gray concerned about it health of district residents. research by the sierra club shows most of the emissions from the potomac river generating station are blowing into ward 8. sulfur dioxide exposure has been linked to respiratory problems including asthma. mayor gray said today he hopes the plant managers will do what is right for the health of the d.c. citizens. powers d.c. and other local

have cleared the shuttle "atlantis" for the launch tomorrow. whether the skies will clear up, though, is difficult story to tell. the weather may hold up the last mission in the history of nasa shuttle program. jay gray has our report. >> reporter: the countdown continues tonight at kennedy space center, every second a step closer to a rendezvous with history. >> it has been remarkable with what it's been able to accomplish. it has been stunning in terms of what we have learned from it, and that knowledge will then go into building the next vehicle. >> reporter: from a technical standpoint, mission managers say all systems are go for friday morning's launch. >> the vehicle's in fantastic shape. got keyed up and ready to go. they're doing everything perfect otime, on schedule, looking amazing. >> reporter: what doesn't look to amazing, though, is the forecast. this afternoon, there was a lightning strike near pat 39-a. >> weather is not looking good for launched. as you know, we've been talking

about this for a few days now, and as you can see now the clouds have rolled in, we're starting to see some showers. we evhad a thunderstorm show up this morning. >> the clouds 'rain are also causing problems for spectators who travel to the space coast, as many as a million are expected hoping to see the final liftoff. >> this is one of the things i can check it off and say i did it. >> reporter: as the anticipation and excitement builds here, unfortunately so do the clouds over pad 39-a, threatening to delay tomorrow's rendezvous with history. jay gray, nbc news, kennedy space center. 10,000 workers at the godard space flight center here in greenbelt will be closely watching the historic final watch. it's going to be a bittersweet day for many at the facility. godard has provided most of the technology, engineering and communication's work over the last three decades of shuttle missions. the launch of the shultz program will mean loss of thousands of jobs at country but many at

godard facility are expected to be retained. doug is here with more about the stormy weather for some of us and the weather that is expected for tomorrow. >> we saw se pop-up storms during the day today and during the evening, too. some of them even became severe for a time. now most of those have gone by the wayside, showers and storms out there towards the west. happening outside new. first off, partly cloudy skies across the area. you may every once of the n a while see a lightning strikeach to the distance but that's exactly what it is, off to the distance. high temperatures today 95 degrees. the eighth time we've been at 95 degrees so far this year. it's been on the warm side and so far 3.3 degrees above normal for the month of july. below normal, though, for rainfall. almost 4 inches below normal. that is for the year. now, as far as what is happening across our area, we are dealing with those warm temperatures. even right now 8 to degrees rightnnounce a heat index outside 85 degrees. 73 in frederick. 74 martins berg.

martins berg, west virginia, seeing rain and heavy rain right along i-81 that's where the vain. shower assist in montgomery county a little earlier and now most of that has died up. still up towards the baltimore region. big storms up there all day, but back into the west frederick county, some of those storms into virginia have produced a lot of rainfall and a flash flood warning remains in effect there until 1:30 in the afternoon -- or 1:30 in the morning, rather. tomorrow afternoon, i do expect to see a lot of rain. the potential is there for us to see some flooding as well. that's why we had that flash flood watch that's in affect for just about everybody dug the day tomorrow. currently a system back to the west that we'll be watching very close ploep that system is bringing heavy rains back towards the st. louis area. make its way our way during the day tomorrow. it's going to be on the warm side, yes, it will continue to be humid but we will see some area. heavy at times that high pressure moves over and that front lingers right across our region. some locations tomorrow could pick up a lot of rain, maybe 1,

2, 3 inches of rain. before said and done, it's not going to be everywhere though. some areas may not see all that much, but most of us will see at least something during the day tomorrow in the form of rain. i would take the umbrella before you make your way out. then on saturday that front moves to the south. we are warm once again, but a little lower humidity and right now i think that weekend is looking dry and quite nice. tomorrow morning partly cloudy. warm and humid with a few showers out there and even a couple of thunderstorms. 67 to 74 degrees. those on clouds will be on the increase and so will the showers and storms. some could be heavy at times and we could see severe weather tomorrow. temperatures about 73 to 86 degrees and move on to the next couple of day, those storms move out of here during the early morning hours on saturday. saturday mostly sunny. sunday 92 degrees. 94 on monday as we really start to heat things up again and it does look like we will stay warm as we move into the day tuesday and then a little cooler as we make our way into next week,

a well-known kidnapping victim will soon serve as an expert commentator on missing persons and child abduction cases. abc news has hired elizabeth smart. smart was kidnapped if her home in salt lake city, utah, at the age of 14 and held captive for nine months. she's 23 years old now. she's expected to start the new job within a few weeks. the mayor of rockville is dismissing the idea that somebody tried to sabotage the kickoff of her re-election campaign. the mayor is phyllis marcuccio. she was making her announcement at rockville town square last month. but ground fountain suddenly started spraying water from underneath her audience. marcuccio says she made arrangements to keep the fountains off during her speech. she says it was a mistake and she says i[ man ] i gotke and this new citi thankyou card
